Hailed for his ‘lavish talents’ (Opera) and recently acclaimed in the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Welsh National Opera, baritone Gavan Ring serves up a lunchtime treat with Wagner’s dreamy hymn to the Evening Star, ‘O du mein holder Abendstern’, and Rossini’s wickedly virtuosic ‘Largo al factotum’. Wagner’s monumental Ride of the Valkyries and the rousing, colour-saturated Overture from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville showcase opera’s capacity to excite and entertain. Liszt’s passionate Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and Smetana’s effervescent Dance of the Comedians raise the rafters in displays of brilliant orchestral energy. Songs made famous by Judy Garland (You Made Me Love You), Lena Horne (Stormy Weather), Barbra Streisand (People) and Liza Minnelli (But the World Goes Round) and tributes to early stars Jeanette MacDonald (San Francisco) and Deanna Durbin (Can’t Help Singing).
