LINDA BUCKLEY chiyo [10’] RTÉ COMMISSION KAIJA SAARIAHO Circle Map [26’] IRISH PREMIERE
Two very distinctive voices in contemporary music find beguiling complexity in bewitching simplicity. Linda Buckley’s RTÉ-commissioned chiyo evokes the mysterious emotional gravity and ‘beauty of hidden things’ celebrated by the 18th-century Japanese haiku poet Chiyo-ni. Receiving its Irish premiere, Kaija Saariaho’s Circle Map fuses orchestra, electronics and voice in an enthralling, richly textured re-imagining of poems by the 13th-century Persian mystic, Rumi.

KEVIN VOLANS Symphony: Daar kom die Alibama [24’] SEÁN CLANCY Changing Rates of Change [8’] ENDA BATES Duende [5’] RTÉ COMMISSION / WORLD PREMIERE Three of the finest Irish compositional voices share the spotlight with music marked by pulsing textures and rhythmic vitality. An intricate patchwork drawing on a South African song, Kevin Volans’ Symphony: Daar kom die Alibama is a mesmerising meditation on the sea and maritime trade. Seán Clancy’s Changing Rates of Change takes Faith No More’s Jizzlober as its starting point in music marked by constant and unpredictable variations. Enda Bates’ spell-like Duende conjures Spanish spirit and passion to magical effect.
