2015–2016: OUR SEASON
It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s 2015–2016 season, featuring some of the most exciting and inspiring music in the entire orchestral repertoire. I am particularly proud to present the wonderful series of four early symphonies and orchestral song cycles of Gustav Mahler, including magical settings of texts from that seminal collection of German romantic poetry, Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn). In contrast, we are offering a survey of the three amazing symphonies
My farewell season as Principal Conductor concludes with a fabulous choral work by Sergei Prokofiev, a dramatic cantata on the life of the heroic figure Alexander Nevsky.
Dmitri Shostakovich wrote under terrible circumstances during World War II. My farewell season as Principal Conductor concludes with a fabulous choral work by Sergei Prokofiev, a dramatic cantata on the life of the heroic figure Alexander Nevsky. It will be a particular pleasure to be joined by my dear friends in the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir on that occasion. The ‘Phil’ will also
be closely involved in performances of two other works regarded as being close to the pinnacle of great choral writing, the Missa solemnis of Beethoven and Bach’s St John Passion. The season includes a number of Irish works including the world premiere of Raymond Deane’s The Alma Fragments; the first Irish performance of the piano concerto by Gerald Barry, RTÉ Composer in Residence; together with works by Siobhán Cleary and Seán Ó Riada. In 2016, 100 years on, many may be especially moved to hear Englishman Arnold Bax’s In memoriam (1916), his elegiac response on hearing of the death of his friend Pádraic Pearse.

2015–2016: OUR SEASON
A number of major twentieth-century concerti are showcased – including inspirational works by Barber, Dutilleux, Lutosławski and Szymanowski – as are familiar masterpieces by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Tchaikovsky. Stravinsky in Focus, a two-day celebration of key works from the composer’s neoclassical period, will feature four of RTÉ’s performing groups together with colleagues from Chamber Choir Ireland and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. There too, major symphonies by Dvorák and Rachmaninov and a number of major works by Edward Elgar. Throughout the season the orchestra will be joined by a wonderful array of guest artists, including a number of talented conductors who will be new to Ireland and some outstanding instrumentalists. The latter include pianists such as my dear friend Elisso Virsaladze, Peter Donohoe, the prize-winning Italian Federico Colli, David Fray from France and Russians Denis Kozukhin and Alexei Volodin. Other highlights include the eagerly awaited visit of violinist Veronika Eberle from Germany and the return visit of Russian born Alina Pogostkina, both of whom are at the forefront of the younger generation, together with the wonderful German cellists Leonard Elschenbroich and Alban Gerhardt and the celebrated English violist Lawrence Power. Finally, given that
The orchestra will be joined by a wonderful array of guest artists, including a number of talented conductors who will be new to Ireland and some outstanding instrumentalists.
our programmes include so much uplifting music featuring the human voice, we are especially proud to have assembled so many outstanding Irish singers including, in order of appearance, Claudia Boyle, Patricia Bardon, Giselle Allen, Rachel Kelly, Robin Tritschler, Tara Erraught, Orla Boylan and Ailish Tynan. Join us, and let us share some of this extraordinary music with you. Alan Buribayev 5

PROFILE
RTÉ NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA From its foundation in 1948 as the Radio Éireann Symphony Orchestra the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has been at the forefront of symphonic music in Ireland providing an unbroken stream of concerts. Since that time, the orchestra has firmly established itself as a primary force in Irish musical life. World-class conductors associated with the orchestra’s early days include Jean Martinon, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Edmond Appia, Milan Horvat and Sir John Barbirolli. The first half of the 1960s saw Tibor Paul as Principal Conductor, a tenure memorable for the visit of Igor Stravinsky. The list of guest artists and composers with whom the orchestra has worked is long and distinguished and features legendary names such as Josef Szigeti, Isaac Stern, Henryk Szering, Ruggiero Ricci, Wilhelm Kempff, Julius Katchen, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Joan Sutherland, Bernadette Greevy, Angela Gheorghiu, Kiri te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Paul Tortelier, Barry Douglas, Sir James Galway, Constantin Silvestri, Charles Dutoit, Sir Charles Groves, Witold Lutosławski, Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt. Today, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra plays a central role in classical music in Ireland through year-long programmes of live performances, schools and educational projects, broadcasts on RTÉ lyric fm and internationally through the European Broadcasting Union, recordings and new commissions. Recent premieres of works by Irish composers have included music by Elaine Agnew, Bill Whelan, Gráinne Mulvey, David Coonan, Linda Buckley and Irene Buckley. The orchestra has been critically acclaimed for its recordings across a variety of labels including Naxos, Claves and the RTÉ lyric fm label. Recent Naxos releases include two critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bizet and Dukas with conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud. Recordings on the RTÉ lyric fm label include the Composers of Ireland series, funded by RTÉ and The Arts Council, which to date has recorded works by Gerald Barry, Raymond Deane, Seóirse Bodley, Deirdre Gribbin, Ian Wilson, John Kinsella, Stephen Gardner, Kevin O’Connell, Donnacha Dennehy and Kevin Volans, recordings of selected orchestral works by Aloys Fleischmann, Frederick May and Seán Ó Riada, Finghin Collins: Mozart Piano Concertos and Celine Byrne: For Eternity.
