The Center for Global Education summer study abroad programs are your opportunity for academically meaningful international learning experiences. Each program offers excellent opportunities to deepen your understanding of a foreign culture, explore an interesting topic inside your major, or simply expose yourself to new ideas and perspectives.

TYPES OF STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS We offer many types of summer programs designed to put an international experience within reach of all Rutgers students regardless of co-curricular or financial constraints. You can join accomplished faculty on field-based learning experiences on our many faculty-led programs. You can enroll in a summer session at one of our several partner universities abroad. Additionally, you can find programs for intensive language study or opportunities to engage in community-driven service projects for credit on our growing number of service-learning abroad programs. Programs are of varying length and credit, so you’re sure to find a program to fit your schedule and budget. So, what will you do with your summer? Assist on the excavation of a Roman-era villa in Italy, or learn about endangered primates and habitat conservation in Kenya? Study a foreign language in China, Morocco, or Russia? Volunteer in an under-resourced school in Argentina, work in a community-run health clinic in Mexico, or train women farmers in rural Turkey? PROGRAM COST, FINANCIAL AID, AND SCHOLARSHIPS Rutgers study abroad programs are priced to be as financially accessible as possible. To see the cost for an individual program, please consult the Rutgers Center for Global Education website. Rutgers students are eligible for limited financial aid if they take a course load of 6 credits or more during the summer term. The Rutgers summer aid application is available on April 1, 2015 and should be completed as soon as possible. Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships and consider applying for additional loans to cover the cost. The Center for Global Education and a variety of participating Rutgers schools and departments offer scholarships on a limited basis. Please refer to the Scholarship directory on the Center for Global Education website for a full listing and eligibility requirements. Students from other universities should consult with their Office of Financial Aid.

GLOBAL HEALTH AND SERVICE LEARNING IN THAILAND
Oaxaca, Mexico 6 Credits, 4 1/2 weeks (June–July) Program Director: Peter Guarnaccia
Bangkok,Thailand 3 Credits, 2 weeks (June) Program Director: Mark Robson
Journey to the historic colonial city of Oaxaca to learn about communitybased healthcare models in Mexico through the lived experiences of its patients and practitioners. The program features an intensive seminar on the history and medical anthropology of Mexico, as well as service placements in local health organizations and clinics. Improve your practical Spanish by taking an intensive medical Spanish course and living with a Oaxacan family.
Experience Thailand in all its wonder on this intensive, two-week global health program. The course will focus on rural and urban health issues in Thailand, while introducing students to the national culture and stunning natural beauty of this dynamic country. Service experiences will include working with young people with disabilities and teaching English in a suburban district of Bangkok, as well as a service trip to a rural farming community.

Study SOCIAL JUSTICE and COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Abroad Learn about grassroot movements and social activism in various global and historical contexts. Students will have the opportunity to practice activism and engage with these issues through several service-learning opportunities available through the Service-Learning Abroad programs. LANGUAGE LEARNING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN ARGENTINA Rosario, Argentina 3 Credits, 3 weeks (July–August) Program Director: Crystal Marull Explore modern Argentinian culture and society in all its complexity, from national heritage to contemporary social problems, through a combination of community engagement, coursework, and intensive language immersion. This program features two separate tracks: service-learning in an underserved public school system for students with advanced Spanish proficiency; intensive language-learning track designed to immerse beginner and intermediate Spanish speakers through intensive coursework and experiential learning opportunities in the Rosario community. This program is a culturally and linguistically intensive, holistic learning experience.
SOCIAL WELFARE SYSTEM IN CHINA Beijing and Tianjin, China 3-6 Credits, 2 or 4 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Chien-Chung Huang Take an in-depth look at the nature and practice of social welfare institutions in China, and the challenges faced due to rapid urban population growth and economic development. On this program, you will visit local social welfare organizations throughout Beijing, meeting with social work practitioners and exploring the differences between practices and policy in China and the United States. Following a two-week seminar, there is the option to complete an additional two week service-learning experience to deepen your understanding of social work agencies and philanthropic organizations in China.

Mumbai, India 3 Credits, 3 weeks (July) Program Director: Karun Singh Explore social and political dimensions of the social welfare sector in India, the world’s most populous democratic nation. Learn about social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility through visits to Indian NGOs and guest lectures from industry leaders in Mumbai. Hosted by the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences, the program will provide you with an intensive overview of social work in India, as well as a firsthand introduction to Indian culture and society.
RESEARCH IN ACTION IN SANTO DOMINGO Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 6 Credits, 4 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Carlos Decena Interested in experiencing the Caribbean through the lens of contemporary social justice movements? This program centers on a 6-credit internship with a local NGO or community-run organization in Santo Domingo, DR. Through internships, reflection seminars, and cultural excursions, you will gain insight into the complex challenges of instituting social reform presented from both a national and pan-Caribbean perspective.
ENGAGING WITH GREECE IN TRANSITION Thessaloniki, Greece 6 Credits, 5 weeks (June-July) Program Director: Katerina Kourti-Gavalas Explore Greece’s rich past and its present-day challenges in the history-laden port city of Thessaloniki. The program consists of one course on the history or politics of Greece and Europe, as well as an intensive seminar on modern Greek society that combines discussion-based group meetings with an internship or service experience in the greater Thessaloniki community. Whether interning at a girls orphanage, a Jewish cultural center, or a hospital, your experience will give you great insight into how Greek society continues to function in the face of political and economic instability.
ROMANIA’S [R]EVOLUTION: INVESTING IN CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ACROSS THE LIFE CYCLE Cluj-Napoca, Romania 3-6 Credits, 2 or 4 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Rebecca Davis Take an intensive two-week seminar exploring community-based care models, and how they are addressing vulnerable populations in Romania amid a climate of social and political change. This program features seminars and field visits to learn about public and private social service organizations, and the challenges and complexities of the emerging social work profession in Romania. Following the two-week seminar, you may opt to spend an additional two weeks engaging in service-learning with Cluj’s most vulnerable populations. The service placement is worth an additional three credits (total: 6), and may be counted toward 70 field hours for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work.

ART, PERFORMANCE, AND ACTIVISM IN THE SAHEL SERVICE -LEARNING
Dakar, Senegal 3 Credits, 2 weeks (July) Program Director: Ousseina Alidou Celebrate the arts as a means of cultural expression and a medium for youth activism by journeying into the creative world of the Senegalese artist community. This dynamic new program features visits to sites of historical and cultural significance while experiencing the pulse of daily life in one of Africa’s fastest-growing, most culturally diverse regions. You will also meet with a variety of local organizations that support youth culture activities as well as the economic self-sufficiency of local artists, performers, and musicians.
AGRI[CULTURE] AND COMMUNITY: EMPOWERING FAMILY FARMS IN TURKEY Boztepe, Turkey 3 Credits, 3 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Robin Brumfield Experience the benefits and challenges of small-scale agriculture in a small, rural farming community by taking part in Suzanne’s Project, a workshop that trains women farmers in management skills and business practices. Hosted by a small farming community just a short drive from the popular Mediterranean beach destination of Antalya, this program will expose you to modern Turkish society and agricultural systems in an intimate, authentic setting.
One of the largest impressions this trip has had on my consciousness is related to the notion of global citizenship. I FEEL like part of something larger than myself. This trip illustrated a connection to a grand constellation of folks who (in some superficial ways) are different from me. Yet, the similarities that bond our experiences are very real.

Bloemfontein and Johannesburg, South Africa 3 Credits, 2 weeks (July) Program Director: Darren Clarke Designed as an experiential learning course, students explore the complex social and educational issues facing South Africa that inform global education. You will visit “spaces of memory” and meet with renowned scholars who are passionate about the promise of this Rainbow Nation. You’ll also have opportunities to work handson with children and adult learners in Teboho Trust and Nkosi’s Haven empowerment projects. The learning and field experiences of this course take into account the diverse academic
discipline of students; with the goal of helping participants challenge beliefs and assumptions, and develop their critical thinking skills. The program is open only to students with an earned Bachelor’s degree, unless special permission is given from the program director.

Study coral identification and other advanced marine biological techniques under the direction of a professional researcher and marine biologist while taking part in dives on some of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse reefs in the Caribbean. You will participate in field trips each day to gain a better understanding of shallow marine, coastal, and coral reef habitats, and will gain experience working in an extremely diverse marine ecosystem.
Program participants will work with resident experts across a vast array of habitats and primate species, including some of the most endangered on earth, for an unparalleled breadth of experience held in the national parks and nature preserves of Kenya. In addition to the scientific component, students will explore debates around wildlife preservation in East Africa and emerging innovative solutions that are contextually and culturally different than any found in the United States.

Program participants will study food science, agricultural economics, and plant and animal agriculture at PURPAN, a French university in the heart of Toulouse. The first four weeks of this program include classroom lectures and are followed by four weeks living with a French family and participating in a work experience at a vineyard or farm. Excursions will be planned to visit French cultural and historic sites throughout the program.
This dynamic program investigates the science of wine and cheese fermentation, and its central role in French patrimoine (cultural heritage). Students will learn the complex chemical and biological processes that create diverse varieties of cheese and wine while exploring the role of cheese and wine in the history, economy, culture, cuisine, art, and architecture of Burgundy, and of France as a whole.

WORLD HERITAGE IN CONTEXT: KRAKOW AND BEYOND Krakow, Poland 6 Credits, 4 weeks (June–July) Program Director: Catherine Boland Erkkila This four-week program gives students a hands-on look at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Krakow, Poland and the surrounding region. Emphasizing site visits and interactions with heritage practitioners, urban planners, and cultural institutions, this course provides students with an unparalleled look at this diverse and culturally rich region and the management of its cultural resources. Based in Krakow, excursions to other World Heritage Sites include Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines, and the wooden churches of southern Małopolska. Students will also be in Krakow during the internationally renowned Jewish Culture Festival.
ART HISTORY IN ROME Location: Rome, Italy 5 Credits, 5 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Benjamin Paul and Erik Thuno The Art History in Rome course is an intensive five-week summer program led by local scholars and faculty from the Rutgers Art History Department. It studies art and architecture in Rome from antiquity to the late Baroque period. Classes will be held on-site, including some of the most famous monuments in the history of western civilization. There will be multiple daylong field trips to Assisi, Tivoli, and Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden.

Paris, France 6 Credits, 5 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Florence Quideau This program’s goal is for students to become familiar with the major monuments and works of art in Paris and the development and transformation of the city from the period of Antiquity to the French Revolution. Classes will be conducted through walking tours in the streets, before and within monuments, and in museums. You will go on day trips to the cathedral at Chartres, the Baroque palace of Versailles, and Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye. Occasional culinary and cultural events will enhance students’ understanding of the history of Paris and French culture.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL IN ITALY Vacone, Italy 6 Credits, 5 weeks (July-August) Program Director: Gary D. Farney Participate in the Upper Sabina Tiberina Project, an archaeological dig site focused on the excavation and preservation of a second-century BCE to second-century CE Roman villa, which became a cemetery in later times. This program teaches students methods of field-based archaeology through hands-on learning in Italy. Students will work with archaeological researchers from around the world and visit local cultural sites. The work of the field school takes place about 40 miles north of Rome, and so students will also have the opportunity to visit Rome or other destinations in Italy on their weekends off.
BERLIN THEATER AND CONTEMPORARY INNOVATION Berlin, Germany 3 credits, 3 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Christopher Cartmill Study the influence of Berlin theatre and innovation on global drama in the heart of Europe on a three-week, three-credit program that uses the theaters, cafes, and museums of Berlin as your classroom. Students will look at three important periods of significant theatrical flowering — the late-eighteenth century and earlynineteenth century Romantic era of Goethe and Schiller; the pre-World War II years of Toller, Brecht, Reinhardt and Weill and current art and performance scene that is at the center of 21st century inventiveness.
CREATIVE WRITING IN LEWES Lewes, United Kingdom 3 credits, 2.5 weeks (May-June) Program Director: Paul Blaney A sixteen day intensive-writing program, designed to expose students to the history and literary inspiration of one of England’s most remarkable landscapes. Amble the countryside of southern England, stopping at local places of interest, including the home of Virginia Woolf. Students will compile written works in a variety of genres into a final portfolio of poems, short fictions, and reflective essays.

Stratford-upon-Avon and London, United Kingdom 3 Credits, 4 weeks (July) Program Director: Thomas Fulton Participants in this program will witness Shakespeare’s work as it was meant to be seen: performances in the Globe Theatre in London and by the Royal Shakespeare Company are major parts of this program. Learn about the challenges and complexities of Shakespearian production through site visits to some of the United Kingdom’s most famous theatres and visit with actors, directors, and producers of the Bard’s work. Students will spend two weeks in New Brunswick prior to departure to gain a background in Shakespeare’s work before departing for the United Kingdom.

LEADERSHIP ACROSS CULTURES: COMPARATIVE APPROACHES Kyoto, Japan 3 Credits, 3 weeks Program Director: Muli Peleg Explore similarities and differences in leadership styles of Japanese and American leaders in fields such as politics and business on this three week program in Japan. The course will cover leadership theory, specifically how leaders communicate to followers across cultural boundaries, and how those followers are influenced by their leaders’ paths of communications. Students will get the chance to visit both Tokyo and Kyoto, two of Japan’s most historically and culturally rich cities. Local students will accompany participants on many excursions.
POLITICS OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN SOUTH AFRICA
UNITED NATIONS STUDY PROGRAM
Cape Town, South Africa 2 Credits, 2 weeks (August) Program Director: Alison Bernstein
New York City and New Brunswick, New Jersey 3 credits, 3 weeks (July) Program Director: Nathalie Margi Learn about the United Nations, how it works, and how it is grappling with the major issues that affect our world. Explore global problems of peace and security, human rights, climate change, international aid and development with UN experts and Rutgers professors. Visit UN meeting spaces and the missions of UN Member States while studying onsite in New York City, with short stays to begin and end the program on the beautiful Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus. SERVICE -LEARNING
Join a delegation of students from Rutgers and Barnard College and a distinguished group of scholars from the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town on an exploration of historical and contemporary constructions of gender and sexuality in a South African context. Students will participate in seminars, cultural excursions, and service activities in and around the magnificent coastal city of Cape Town, while taking coursework with Rutgers, Barnard, and UCT faculty.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IN SPAIN SERVICE -LEARNING
Barcelona, Spain 5 Credits, 5 weeks (June-July) Program Director: David Tulloch This program will use a studio format to explore existing planning and design work in Barcelona and the surrounding areas for five weeks. The class will begin with daily field visits to study the plazas, gardens, neighborhoods, buildings and art of the region. Students will observe, sketch, measure, photograph and write about these spaces to deepen their understanding of how they function. Whether it is Cerda’s master plan for the city or the sculptural work of American Beverly Pepper, almost every design we study will be something that works in a uniquely Catalan way. Students will also take a trip to Central Spain to see other cities and sites that are distinct from the Catalan design.

IES: SYDNEY Sydney, Australia 6 Credits, 6 weeks (June-July) Students will take courses on Australian history and culture as well as leadership and communication to earn six credits in Australia’s cultural center, Sydney. Visits to famous sites such as the Great Barrier Reef and Cairns, as well as the Historic Rocks district of Sydney will round out this six-week program. CIEE: CENTRAL EUROPEAN STUDIES Prague, Czech Republic 3-7 Credits, 3-6 weeks: (June-July) Take courses on Czech history and culture, communications, art, or cinema while living with Czech college students and other international students in the heart of Prague. Weekend excursions will be held at exceptionally interesting and educationally valuable sites, and various site visits will be included.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS IN ALICANTE Alicante, Spain 3 Credits, 3 weeks (July) Program Director: Carlos Seiglie This program will provide students with the tools and terminology to understand marketing practices in a global environment. Students will be exposed to the challenges of an international marketing manager and the dynamic environment, culture and politics of international trade. Courses will be taught in one of the most famous Spanish coastal cities at the University of Alicante with students from all over the world.
EUROPEAN BUSINESS SCHOOL Oestrich-Winkel, Germany 5 Credits, 3 weeks: (June-July) The European Business School (EBS), founded in 1971, is considered to have one of the top five business economics faculties in Germany. The EBS community consists of 80 renowned professors plus guest lecturers from all over the world. This is a three-week-long program intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students of Business and other related disciplines.

Studying intensive Mandarin in Beijing changed my life. It gave me the opportunity to embrace an entirely new culture and language, and the program centered my daily routine around this new context. My fluency and confidence in speaking the language increased. And to top it all off, I made some great friends. We will always share an emotional bond through our experiences in China. These programs are suitable both for students who have little knowledge of Arabic to advanced speakers. Classes take place daily, and students further develop their language proficiency by living with a local family. AMIDEAST students participate in day trips to local historical and cultural sites throughout the program.
Take intensive Chinese language courses for six weeks at the Beijing Languages and Cultures University (BLCU), the premiere institute for Chinese language study. Courses in Chinese Calligraphy or a guided research project in an area of Chinese Studies will supplement your language study. Students will explore Beijing through program excursions to sites such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, as well as a longer tour at the end of the program.

What I enjoyed most about the program was the freedom we had to actually explore and appreciate the culture on our own. Urbino, Italy 6-8 Credits, 5 weeks (late June – early August) Program Director: Andrea Baldi Study Italian at all levels in the beautiful Renaissance city of Urbino. Urbino’s town center is one of the most culturally significant historic sites in Europe, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Courses include Elementary and Intermediate Italian, Advanced Conversation and Civilization, Italian Short Story, and Italian Literature of the Renaissance (taught in English). You will be housed at the University of Urbino and three meals a day will be provided. The program also includes group excursions to some of the most beautiful cities in Italy, such as Ravenna, Siena, and Florence.

St. Petersburg, Russia 8 Credits, 8 weeks (May-July) Program Director: Matthew Mangold Study Russian language intensively while experiencing St. Petersburg, a city that was the locus of imperial power and revolution in Russia since its inception in 1703. By the end of this eight-week intensive Russian session, students will have received a full year’s worth of Russian language training while gaining a vivid and profound appreciation of the leading role St. Petersburg has played, and continues to play, in Russian culture and history. Through excursions, students will experience the historical and cultural significance of the city.
CIEE: RIO DE JANEIRO INTENSIVE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 6-8 Credits, 4 weeks (July) This is a five-week program in which students will study Portuguese language and Brazilian culture at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Brazil. You will be placed in the appropriate Portuguese Language class based on your results in a placement exam prior to the start of your class. Language classes are available for beginners to advanced speakers.

SPANISH LANGUAGE IN PERĂš Cusco, PerĂş 7-9 Credits, 5 weeks Program Director: Stephen Bishop The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a five-week program that combines language study with community service and visits to ancient Inca and pre-Incan sites. Students take 6 credits of Spanish language classes in a local language school in Cusco, and volunteer afternoons for one additional academic credit at one of several local organizations: a center for children with disabilities (cerebral palsy, autism and others), an orphanage and a local hospital. An additional optional two credits of independent research are available to students who choose to submit an 8-10 page research paper in Spanish to the director. SPANISH LANGUAGE IN SALAMANCA Salamanca, Spain 8 Credits, 4 weeks Program Director: Ana Laguna The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers an intensive Spanish language and culture course in Salamanca, Spain. Students will take classes at Universidad de Salamanca and live and eat in a residence hall with other students of the University. The program is designed to enhance language proficiency through both classroom instruction and direct exposure to the host culture. FRENCH LANGUAGE PROGRAM IN PARIS Paris, France 6 Credits, 6 weeks Program Director: Ana Pairet The Department of French provides students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of France in the best possible social and intellectual environment and at low cost. The faculty is composed of professors from French universities and instructors from Rutgers University. Students choose two courses in French from a suite of options that include composition and conversation, literature, civilization, theater, and the cultural history of French cuisine.
