How Far Will You Go at Rutgers? An education is about breaking boundaries – of preconceived notions, unquestioned assumptions, and firmly-held beliefs. In our increasingly interconnected world, an education now also requires stepping beyond the borders – of New Jersey, of the United States – and experiencing a different way of life and a different way of viewing the world. The Center for Global Education is dedicated to helping you cross that border. We are part of the Rutgers’ Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs (GAIA Centers) whose mission includes expanding international learning opportunities for the Rutgers community. In this brochure you will find international programs in all kinds of academic areas, of different lengths, in locations around the world. If you’re inspired to study abroad, all you have to do is contact us – we’ll help you figure out the rest!

Planning Your Time Abroad It’s never too early to start planning to study abroad. Shortterm programs in the winter and the summer are available to you already in your first year at Rutgers. In fact, the summer after your first year is an excellent time to get started on your international experience, in a summer session at a foreign university or on one of Rutgers’ many short-term faculty-led programs. Semester and academic year study abroad are available to you starting in the spring semester of your second year until you graduate.
Deadlines Session Fall/Academic Year Summer Spring/Winter
Application Available late November late November July
Application Deadline March 1 March 1 October 1
Where to Go There are over 120 Rutgers study abroad programs to choose from, and the list is constantly growing. While all programs will open your eyes to new perspectives and ideas, your decision will be determined largely by your own personal goals. Are you looking to gain fluency in a foreign language? Get a global perspective on your major? View artistic and historical monuments up close or experience an entirely different culture? Do valuable research on-site? This viewbook is meant to serve as an introduction to get you started. Our study abroad advisors will assist you in finding the best possible program based on your goals, interests, and academic needs.

Eligibility Many programs, even in non-English speaking countries, offer coursework in English, so you don’t need to know a foreign language in order to go abroad. You must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at Rutgers. Some more specialized programs may require certain pre-requisites. Most programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5 to 3.0, though some programs will accept students with slightly less, and some have a slightly higher requirement. Students from other US universities may also apply, though some exchange programs are only open to Rutgers undergraduates.
Financial Aid and Scholarships Rutgers financial aid, scholarships, and loans are generally applicable for semester and academic year programs. Financial aid for summer programs is generally in the form of loans and eligible students must submit a summer aid application by early April and be registered for at least 6 credits. Depending upon the cost of the study abroad program and your eligibility, the aid package you receive may not meet your full demonstrated financial need. Please refer to the Rutgers Financial Aid web page for details about financial aid deadlines and contact your financial aid advisor to discuss your financial aid package. Our website provides a full directory of competitive study abroad scholarships offered by the Center for Global Education and Rutgers University departments for Rutgers students. Nationally competitive scholarships are also available through U.S. government sponsored, local, and international organizations. Refer to the Scholarships section of the Center for Global Education website for more information about funding possibilities and scholarship deadlines. It is important to research funding options before you officially apply for a program since some scholarships require you to apply up to a year before you go abroad.
Tuition Remission If you are a matriculated, full-time Rutgers student and a dependent of a Rutgers University employee, you may be eligible for tuition remission benefits.
