Open Keelung !

The Making of Theater city

This urban planning project aims to reprogram Keelung as a city of nighttime attractions. The comprehensive study ranges from physical infrastructure to the psychological metaphor of night. Keelung, with its dynamic nightscape rooted in its complex port history, has served as a carrier for nocturnal activities for a long time. However, the city now faces serious depopulation issues, and many buildings have decayed over the years. By opening up many of the interesting “Cracks” within the city’s context, we aim to unveil the robust power of nighttime Keelung and intertwine modern programs into this extensive network. The main goal of this project is to develop a sustaning programing model that respects the unique history and characteristics of Keelung while rejuvenating the old town to welcome the new generation. And left no one behind.

If we scroll through the pages of Keelung's history, we find a rich tapestry of "companionship culture," encompassing its religious roots, street food traditions, and erotic industry. What is now seen as a negative symbol of an outdated past was actually a vivid response to the lifestyle and needs of a port city and its people. By juxtaposing Taiwan's unique practice of mobile performances with these cultural elements, we recognized that theater is a powerful way to revive and reintroduce these traditions.

Tales of te Night

As the daylight fades, people begin their search for illumination in the night. On Zhong er Road, the main theater street, local shops started lighting up their night lamps. This light spots begins to connect into a bands of light, stretching from quiet neighborhoods to bustling markets.

Under the moon’s glow, the Canzaiting Fish Market becomes a theater of daily life. Crowds entering the main street cast their eyes toward the market’s overpass. Wandering through the area, the forms of actors, spectators, and fish market workers intertwine, their overlapping presence like a bright incandescent bulb, catching the eye and drawing people forward.

Midtown Hybrid Redevelopement

The downtown area of Tainan City has long been dominated by the train station, major businesses, and government offices. This longstanding occupation has posed a challenge in the automatic renewal of the area over time. Consequently, the district has evolved into a hub for immigrant workers, low-income families, and tourists, rendering it outdated and disconnected from the surrounding regions.

However, the upcoming introduction of a new MRT and underground railway system provides an opportunity to breathe new life into the downtown area, bridging the gap between the front and back stations.

Transformiation of social structure and space demand

As society evolves, the term "Nuclear Family" becomes outdated for today's diverse family structures. The concept of the "social family," including friends, caregivers, and even pets, is emerging in contemporary society.

The evoluition of city gradually eliminates residential space from the ground level. The dynamic process of “going home” being condense into a single elevator ride.Losing the sense of identity, more city space become liminal space.

Redesign of River Bank Against Sea-level Rise

As an islander, the history and culture of ours are deeply related to water. However, with the development of urbanism, people lost contact with surrounding nature.Nonetheless, he situation has changed due to the rise of sea level. In no more than 50 years, Taipei, the economic and political capital of Taiwan will be in danger of flood.

We proposed a new kind of border that is not for segregation, between human and nature, but for the residents to coexist with the rising water. We created a skywalk linking the second floor of the original houses and infrastructure like MRT vandict. Ground floor can thus be left for nature reservation. Now we tried to convert the fear of losing land into a chance to build up a new lifestyle that we can prosperous along with the nature.

Storm House

Living In The Collective Dendrogram

Houses in modern society are deeply bounded with each other. Even the smallest change of individual can result in a gigantic storm. We imaged a house that can be shaped to servered different body movement. So the movement transferred from human to the architecture then to its surroundings, composing an endless chains. That is how we defin a storm: series of action and reaction which can not be stop once launched.

Therefore, we no longer consider a house in the city as an individual but instead, an interconnected system in which each particles serves as both the subject and object of changes. There is no fixed boundaries and no form, when we speak about a storm. It's a turbulence that would transform and rearrange in reaction against changes.
