CONTEXT OF PRACTICE 3 PROPOSAL RUBY SHELTON OUIL501 TO WHAT EXTENT DOES ‘AESTHETIC STYLE’ REFLECT THE CONTEXT, AUDIENCE, AND/OR FUNCTION OF CONTEMPORARY ILLUSTRATION? From the research I’ve carried out so far I think I would like to approach this question in regards to the importance of abstract style and the visual language of children’s drawing and how this allows complex concepts to be easily communicated through a universally understood visual language. I want to look at the theories of Paul Klee and the COBRA movement as my first methods of research to find evidence and other theorists that further argue these thought processes.

RELEVANT QUOTES ‘Children also have artistic ability, and there is wisdom in their having it! The more helpless they are, the more instructive are the examples they furnish us; and they must be preserved free of corruption from an early age.’- PAUL KLEE ‘Art does have it’s primal beginnings, as one finds in an ethnographic museum or at home in the nursery. Children can make art too, and this is certainly not a condemnation of the most recent attempts, instead there is a positive truth inherent in this situation. The more helpless the child, the more instructive his or her art is….. All this world, in truth, have to be taken more seriously than all the art museums if a reform of todays art is at stake.’ – PAUL KLEE

RELEVANT QUOTES ‘A creative train of thought is set off by: the unexpected, the unknown, the accidental, the disorderly, the absurd, the impossible.’ –ASGER JORN

‘The child knows no other law than it’s spontaneous feeling for life and has no other desire than to express this.’ – CONSTANT MANIFESTO (1948) ‘Our art is the art of a revolutionary period, simultaneously the reaction of a world going under and the herald of a new world.’ – CONSTANT MANIFESTO (1948)
