Artists Unleashed
Pioneered by expatriate artists in the early 90s, the visual arts have recently erupted into a showcase of local home-grown talent with strong anchors of support from local galleries, mentors and talented local and visiting art teachers. Abaco artists and artisans have enhanced the décor of many second homes on Abaco as well as residences abroad to those collectors who value exporting the local colour and culture of island living. As a source of fund-raising for numerous local charities, local and foreign artists are showcased with contributions of paintings, woodwork, textile art, jewelry, multimedia creations, pottery, mobiles, sculpture and photography. The timeless appeal of art has attracted attendees to many local events, which bring together communities from all the island settlements to enjoy art, food and music. In retrospect, the Abaco Inn Art Show ignited the tradition of Annual Art and Wine Tasting shows by hosting a one-day event every March since 1993, followed soon after by the Hope Town Harbour Lodge with an annual Thanksgiving Wine and Art show. Great Abaco Beach Hotel hosted a three-day event beginning in 1998 until it merged with the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) for a weekend Destination Abaco
extravaganza called Art for the Parks now being held during the first weekend in December. Agape Christian School’s Annual Art Explosion at Grace Gym each year is encouraging the student population and resident artists to display their talent for our enjoyment and encouragement. Nevertheless, it was several years ago when a small group of dedicated artists organized a project to develop awareness of the local talent. With art teachers and high school children, a project took shape to become a mural on the west wall of Standard Hardware under the direction of an accomplished Nassau artist and teacher. All painting supplies were donated by local businesses and art groups. The mural highlights the range of interesting locations and subjects to paint from North Abaco to South Abaco. Throughout the winter and spring months a group of local artists organize art shows inviting select artists to show, sell and donate a small percentage of their sales to local charities such as Abaco Pathfinders, Friends of The Environment, Abaco Cancer Society, Every Child Counts (ECC), and the Bahamas Red Cross Society. Venues include The Green Turtle Club and Marina, Pete’s Pub Gallery in Little Harbour and The Abaco Inn on Elbow Cay. Meanwhile, Man-O-War Cay resi-

Conversely, about a dozen years ago an accomplished Maryland art teacher arrived to paint in Man-O-War Cay. He discovered perfect light, and his passion for the villages of Abaco
evolved into an idea to host more than a decade of art workshops inviting his students from the U.S. to complete their coursework requirements. To encourage more interest in art as a profession, he awarded a scholarship for the 10-day outdoor art study to Abaco Central High School students selected by local art teachers. To date, nine Abaco high school students have completed his workshop. supported by donations of art supplies and transportation coupons from local businesses. While on Man-O-War Cay, it would be worthwhile to stop at Joe’s Studio – a unique store that specializes in handmade wooden boat models, locally made crafts, sea glass jewelry, Leatherman apparel, nautical items and marine antiques. Green Turtle Cay is also a magnet for many visiting artists as they gaze in wonder at the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden depicting noteworthy historic people of Abaco. A young boy’s talent was nurtured by a second home-owner, and he was invited to study art abroad under his guidance. Bahamian Artist Alton Lowe returned as a highly skilled and most beloved artist eventually opening the Lowe Art Gallery and the Memorial Sculpture Garden. Lowe’s magnificent realistic paintings of island people, boats and
art teachers evolved in 2012 with the renovation of an historic cottage in Hope Town once owned by an artist. The Hummingbird Cottage Art Centre, a project of an accomplished artist herself, introduced a concept of offering art openings and painting workshops for local and visiting students. Juried artists on exhibit in the gallery are committed to teaching their craft as a condition of having their art on permanent exhibit. Featured artists exhibit a new show monthly drawing from a mix of American and Bahamian talent whether an emerging artist or an established master. During the months between November to July a visitor most likely will encounter artists with their easels along a scenic route in various villages, capturing the essence of historic island themes. hosts a collection of beautiful art. Treasure Cay boasts a large ceramic studio called Abaco Ceramics, which produces expressive, whimsical and original pieces that have found a welcome in many homes over the years. The owner is committed to the rescue of Abaco potcakes and has introduced a line of coffee mugs with paw prints that delight any animal lover. The name potcake is what Bahamians refer to as a mixed-breed type of dog, and there dogs were fed the potcake or the leftover grains of rice stuck to the bottom of a pot. Art exhibitions with gourmet coffee ambience can be enjoyed at two locations on Abaco, Bliss Coffee House and Art in Marsh Harbour, and Hope Town Coffee House. Bliss Coffee House and Art is owned by Claire Basden of Your Finance, along with recently nominated Bahamian icon artist, Leanne Russell, who studied with a visiting art teacher on Green Turtle Cay. Russell’s vision for the future is to host pop-up shows, seeking new talent and introducing their style to a grateful public. Hope Town Coffee House is located on the corner of Front St. & Lovers Lane near the Lower Public Dock in Hope Town. As Hope Town’s first and only coffee shop, the menu offers in-house roasted coffee drinks including cappuccinos, lattes, and chai tea as well as freshly made pastries and sandwiches. Before leaving, customers can purchase bags of freshly roasted coffee at the gift store located there. Back to the mainland, the Minnis Family Art Gallery has artwork on
display by the talented Minnis family, which includes Eddie Minnis, his two daughters Nicole and Roshanne, and his son-in-law Ritchie Eyma. The artists all work with oil on canvas, placing their own distinctive style and perspective of Bahamian scenery in their respective paintings. Minnis Family Art Gallery opened in 2013 at Royal Harbour Village in Marsh Harbour just upstairs from Bliss Coffee House and Art (formerly known as Java), and opens
by appointment only. Fine dining establishments such as the Hope Town Harbour Lodge, Mangoes Restaurant, Abaco Inn, Sea Spray Resort, Hope Town Inn and Marina all invite artists to display and exhibit in their boutique. and the Johnston Studio Foundry in Little Harbour. During winter months the public is invited from time to time to observe the pouring of molten bronze into their molds and tour the casting facility. A generous group of volunteers teaches art at the Hope Town Primary School and has successfully engaged third and fourth-grade students in producing two illustrated books featuring their own art and writing compositions. These charming, whimsical books featuring the charismatic hero UP are offered for sale in local boutiques. Look for “UP Cycles To School” and “UP Keep The Light On.” Supporting artists with printing cards or canvas prints are Abaco Print Shop, Snap Shop and Abaco Imaging. Local carpenters in each settlement support artists by upcycling driftwood making outstanding one of a kind frames for a unique Island complement to each artists work. Resident and visiting artists meet weekly to create and have lunch together in Hope Town on Tuesdays and in Bahama Palm Shores on Wednesdays, welcoming all newcomers to enjoy plein air painting as a group, sharing skills and critiques. Undeniably, the vibrancy of art now being produced on Abaco connects artist with collector as a cultural exchange. Images of our island life travel the corners of the globe in the hands of grateful visitors who can continue to enjoy their vacation image as interpreted by a local artist. Visitors wanting a more personal experience to create their very own commissioned piece of work are welcomed into working studios advertised in our listings under Artists and Galleries. Eco-Adventures Mangroves
Due to the flat land and typically shallow waters, The Bahamas largely consists of wetland ecosystems, making them the most important ecosystem in the country. Wetlands, often referred to as swamps or marshes, are areas that are regularly flooded with salt or fresh water, even though they are sometimes permanently or temporarily dry due to tides or arid seasons. Wetlands can either be coastal or inland. Coastal wetlands are influenced by the tides. The plants found here are very salt tolerant and protect the coastline from storm surges and runoff into the sea. Inland wetlands are cutoff from the sea and are more influenced by rainfall, rivers, or ground water. Mangroves are the trees that can be found in these wetland areas. Worldwide, there are over 50 species of mangroves, four of which can be found in The Bahamas.

This spot was the founding settlement of Abaco and is located on the northeast peninsula of what is now Treasure Cay beach. Six hundred American Loyalists, built the settlement in 1783 migrating to The Bahamas because of their allegiance to Great Britain after the American Revolution. It was named Carleton Point after Sir Guy Carleton, a British military commander of North America stationed in New York. However, in 1785, a hurricane struck the settlement, and it was later deserted. Archaeologists have uncovered remains of the Loyalist settlement and in September
1983 a bronze plaque was officially unveiled to commemorate the site. Plans are to construct a national monument and tourist attraction here. Cholera Graveyard
In the 1850s a dark cloud covered the community of Hope Town when residents were exposed to the cholera epidemic. This highly contagious and incurable disease spread rapidly through the community resulting in 100 lives being lost. Although grief stricken by the tragic lost, the community rallied together and assigned a burial site for their loved ones. Today the graveyard remains in existence at its original site, but with no gravestones marking the graves. Preserving this part of their history allows visitors and locals to pay their respect to the lives lost. Visitors can pick up a booklet with information on the location and some historical facts at Vernon’s Grocery in Hope Town.
Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden
This garden, located not far from the Albert Lowe Museum in Green Turtle Cay, is the brainchild of Alton Lowe and was built with funds raised by the New Plymouth Historical Society. The garden is a monumental tribute to those who played a significant role in the history of Abaco - the Loyalists and their slaves, who despite hard times, survived and made a new life in The Bahamas. The garden contains 24 busts of prominent Bahamians (representing various Bahamian islands), surrounding the lifesize bronze figures of two girls, one black and one white. One child holds a conch shell, an important Bahamian symbol, while the other holds the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain. Artist James Mastin 23

Monument to Fishermen
In October of 1988, the community of Cherokee Sound erected a monument dedicated to the Cherokee fishermen and their smacks (locally-made fishing boats). The people of this community once thrived from the fishing industry and distinguished themselves by carrying five sails rather than the usual seven on their fishing smacks. Scripted on the monument is information dating back from the mid 1800’s to the late 1950’s that includes the history of the fishing industry in that community, the names of the fishermen who drowned during a fishing trip, and the names of the smacks operating during that century. The boat’s Temporary Cruising Permit is for one year from date of entry and may be renewed for up to two further years if desired by written application to Bahamas Customs, Nassau, prior to expiration and payment of $500 per year. To leave your boat in The Bahamas permanently, you must pay an import duty of 10% for vessels of any size. Since there is no income tax in The Bahamas, there is usually a 35% duty, plus shipping costs, added to most consumer goods. If you experience anything contrary to this, call Comptroller of Customs in Nassau at 242-302-3302. Immigration Procedures
No person is to land in The Bahamas from a foreign territory without permission of an immigration officer. All vessels must be landed at an authorised port of entry. Radio Communications
When using VHF radios, use Channel 16 as the calling channel to initiate communications. Destination Abaco

Fishing Regulations Arriving by Boat
Visiting boaters must clear Customs and Immigration at one of the nearest designated 32 Ports of Entry. As you enter the first port, fly the yellow quarantine flag and notify Customs of your arrival immediately. Only the captain is permitted to leave the boat until the vessel has been cleared. When Customs and Immigration officials come to your vessel, everyone on board must have proof of citizenship and fill out an immigration card. U.S. citizens can present a passport and an official photo I.D., such as a driver’s license or voter’s card. Before leaving The

Where to stay Marsh Harbour
by Canishka Alexander
F
ounded in 1783, Marsh Harbour is the main attraction on mainland Abaco as its capital city and commercial center. In fact, this diversified city offers all of the amenities and services you would expect to find when it comes to world-class dining, shopping, entertainment and exploration. The Marsh Harbour International Airport is operating in full swing and is expected to add airline services from Delta Air Lines before the end of 2015 to complement existing flight services from Atlanta. Downtown Marsh Harbour is dotted with well-stocked hardware stores, supermarkets, service stations, liquor stores, clothing and grocery stores, churches, financial institutions, shopping plazas, electronic stores, medical and pharmaceutical facilities. It’s no wonder that as the third major city in The Bahamas, Marsh Harbour generates a substantial portion of employment opportunities through its small business operations. Many of our visitors have integrated into the community as second homeowners and boating residents, and have joined with residents to bring greater improvement to the island. As such, there are a host of civic or charitable non-profit organizations Destination Abaco

whose members meet regularly to perform charitable works through hands-on efforts or by raising money to assist other organizations. Among these organizations is Abaco Pathfinders. Committed to “Helping young Abaconians enrich their futures,” Pathfinders was founded by Jim Blumberg in 2001 to raise funds to provide academic and vocational scholarships for deserving Abaco youth. To date, Pathfinders has assisted more than 160 students who have pursued studies in The Bahamas, Canada, China, U.K., Spain and the United States. Led by Group Leader Barbara Johnson, the Bahamas Red Cross Society’s Central Abaco Members Group have spearheaded a number of community issues to assist the most vulnerable in our communities such as senior citizens, sick or confined to their homes. As a humanitarian organization, Red Cross members respond to national disasters, partner in the response to the country’s social needs, help to alleviate human suffering through training, empowerment and heightened awareness, and focus on increasing their resources. Another service-oriented person is Lovely Reckley through her “Feed the Children” Lunch Program, which began more than 20 years ago. Through the lunch

Many days she can be found seated at the double exit doors at Maxwell’s Supermarket collecting funds to provide lunches throughout the week to children in need. Perhaps one of the most important services is provided by the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Established in 1965, the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire & Rescue (MHVF&R) continues to offer a valuable service to the Abaco community by extinguishing fires that are threats to homes and communities, and they carry out fire drills and issue safety tips at schools. According to its Web site, there are about 25 active members. The Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club (RMHYC) is a yacht club based in Marsh Harbour. Beyond enjoying the island’s pristine marine environment, the members participate in numerous social activities including fundraising events to give back to the community. Some of their past recipients include Friends of the Environment, BASRA and the Bahamas Red Cross Society. Hope Town

T
he settlement of Hope Town on Elbow Cay, is a quaint, New England style settlement, is a great location for a relaxing vacation or day trip. This community is definitely one that is rich in history, with Lucayan Indian, Spanish Slave Raider, pirate, British, and “Loyalist” roots. The settlement grew to what it is today, with a population of an estimated 2600 people. Despite the growth, the locals wish to maintain the feel of the past centuries. Cars and any other motor vehicles are prohibited in town. Many of the original colonial houses and picket fences still remain to this day. To know more about the history of the island, be sure to stop in at the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum. Exhibited in the museum is the life of the settlement as it originally was. Displayed are tools, utensils, and artifacts related to the sponging, wrecking and ship building industries. There are also many photographs portraying the island in the previous centuries. The Peggy Thompson Welcome Center, named after Mrs. Peggy Thompson, an influential and active member of the community, serves as a tribute to her dedication and love for the island. The Center is open daily from 9:30am to 5:30pm, and offers all the information needed for a trip to Hope Town and should be the first stop. The main attraction in Hope Town is most likely the 120-foot candy striped light-
house. Located across the harbour, it is easily accessible by ferry when requested. The structure was built in 1862 to warn sailors of the nearby reef, and it is still operating today by a kerosene lamp. With the 101 steps to the top, you can experience the breathtaking view of Elbow Cay’s harbour and the neighboring cays. Located on the grounds are a gift shop, marina, and liquor store. Another of the island’s main attractions is the beautiful beach that stretches two miles on the eastern side of the island. The pinkish-white beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a scenic afternoon stroll. The coral reef located just thirty feet off the shore is perfect for snorkeling. For those wishing to explore the seas off the island, there are charters and boat rentals available around the island from places such as Froggies Out Island Adventures, Island Marine, and Sea Horse Marine. The marinas also provide full service for those traveling by boat. Some of the newest activities on the cay are kayaking and paddle boarding. There is nothing like gliding along the top of the crystal clear waters, getting a closer look at wildlife underneath. There are many places on the cay to rent kayaks or paddles boards and also plan tours, including Abaco Eco Kayak Adventures, Abaco Paddle Board, and Lubber’s Landing. There are many restaurants, such as, Hope Town Inn and Marina, Firefly Sunset 55

Man-O-War Cay by Kristen Pearce
M
an-O-War Cay is a tranquil settlement. With many of the original clapboard houses still standing and the narrow streets still in use, the locals hold on to the traditions of the original settlers. It is not a big island, but it certainly is a famous one. Once the boat-building capital of the Bahamas, many of the residents keep the heritage of craftsmanship alive by continuing in the work that made the island famous. The Albury Brothers hangar, Edwin’s Boat yard, Emerson’s Shop, Joe’s Studio, and the Sail Shop will all provide glimpses of the craftsmanship still on the island. To learn more history of this cay, feel free to visit the Man-O-War Heritage Museum. The museum is a non-profit organization and has been opened since 2010. The museum is currently located in one of the oldest buildings on the island; it is estimated to be around 100 years old. The current owner of this building was the last of twelve children born in this house. Displayed are numerous tools, utensils, artifacts, pieces of clothing, pictures, and much more from the settlement’s expansive history. All of the items in the museum were either used by residents of the island or their families. The oldest items on display are estimated to be over 100 years old. The museum directors are in the process of purchasing the Sweeting house next door, which is over 70 years old. The museum’s hours vary, so be sure to stop by on your trip to plan a tour of the
museum to learn more about the cay’s rich history. Man-O-War has just about every necessity to offer. There are many gift shops in which you can find souvenirs and artwork produced by the locals, including Island Treasures, Sally’s Seaside Boutique, Edison’s T-Shirt Shop, and the Painted Fish, also known as the Dive Shop. Visitors will not go hungry with local restaurants open for business, such Dips N Sips, Hibiscus Café, and Dock N’ Dine. Albury’s Ferry provides trips to and from the cay at scheduled times throughout the day. The more adventurous visitors can rent a boat from Water Ways Rentals or Conch Pearl Rentals. During a trip to the cay, make the Man-O-War Marina the first stop on the agenda. The Marina provides many facilities that could make the stay more enjoyable, such as a fresh water pool, showers, restrooms, wireless internet, golf cart rentals, kayak rentals, boat care and maintenance, fuel, and charter boats. Man-O-War is a dry island, but feel free to take your alcohol on the trip. Equipped with practically everything needed, including two grocery stores, two banks and a hair salon, Man-O-War Cay is the perfect location for a day trip or an overnight stay in a rented cottage.

Great Guana Cay by Kristen Pearce

ven though Guana Cay stretches for about seven miles, there are less than 1500 residents, making it perfect for some peace and quiet. A spectacular beach can be found on the eastern side of the island, which is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or taking peaceful walks. Some consider this beach to be one of the greatest beaches. Guana Cay is known for its great diving. On the eastern side of the cay, the Great Abaco Barrier Reef can be found, with many near-shore reefs and dive spots. Diving trips can be arranged daily by the resorts or the dive shop. However, you don’t need a boat to experience the under-water formations of Guana Cay. Many beautiful diving spots can be seen just off shore along the beach. The town has two resorts, a few rental cottages, a convenient grocery store, a few small gift shops, restaurants, and a full service diving shop that runs snorkeling trips. As mentioned, there are two resorts that can be found on Guana Cay. First is Orchid Bay Yacht Club and Marina. Surrounded by such an amazing waterfront view, Orchid Bay is the perfect place for a vacation. Its amenities include a waterfront pool, tennis court, a fully resourced marina, and an elegant restaurant. The second resort is Dolphin Beach Resort. This resort was chosen by Frodor’s Choice as one of their top 10 places to visit in 2009 and 2010. Here you can experience
the peacefulness of Guana Cay, along with the many amenities provided by the resort, including rental rooms and cottages, a private dock, a main lodge with a beautiful deck, rental boats and carts, complimentary kayaks, a freshwater pool, a gift shop called Potcakes, Dive Guana the local dive shop, and Docksiders, the elegant restaurant. Guana Grabbers can also be found on Guana Cay. Grabber’s now offers a brand new marina, a bar and grill, a pool, and lodging. The newly refurnished rooms are perfect for an island getaway, family vacation, or honeymoon site. Guana Cay is not known for its nightlife or tourist attractions, but one thing most tourists are sure not to miss is a visit to one of the most famous bar and grills, Nipper’s Beach Bar and Grill. Nipper’s is considered to be the most colourful and best located bar on Abaco. Located directly on the spectacular beach and with “dune front” tables, the atmosphere at Nipper’s cannot be beat. On the weekends Nipper’s is the place to be on Abaco. Each Sunday many locals and tourists alike travel to Nipper’s for its infamous Bahamian wild boar roast and bar-bque. It’s the best Sunday party on Abaco. On special occasions the legendary Barefoot Man joins the party to share many of his famous songs. This is an event that cannot be missed on a trip to Abaco. Green Turtle Cay by Kristen Pearce
G
reen Turtle Cay has always been at the forefront of Abaco’s rich history, so it is no surprise that it ranks in the top three of the island’s most popular destinations even now. The town of New Plymouth was once the capital city of Abaco and still remains the sister city to Key West. A tour of Green Turtle Cay reveals that it has all the modern conveniences of an island community including a post office, bank, grocery stores, churches, restaurants, rental agencies, and a primary school – Amy Roberts Primary School. Visitors and residents of the cay generally travel to New Plymouth courtesy of the Green Turtle Cay Ferry. Full service resorts and marinas and boat rentals are available. For the history enthusiasts, a tour of the Albert Lowe Museum or the Memorial Sculpture Garden will gain their approval as they observe the preservation of Abaco’s unique history and development over the centuries. Vertrum Lowe’s Ship Shop features work of local artists and the skill of boat building, which Abaconians are renowned for. Every May the Annual Island Roots Heritage Festival is held, and visitors enjoy a lively line-up of presentations, performances and entertainment. During the holidays a New Year’s Day Junkanoo Parade rings in the year with brilliant flashes of Junkanoo costumes as dancers gyrate to the sound of the goatskin drums, cowbells and horns. Hands down, Green Turtle Cay is ideal for family vacations, weddings or romantic getaways. It is also a popular venue for fishing tournaments and the launch of Regatta Time in Abaco racing and festivities. Its fame doesn’t end there. The national drink of The Bahamas – the Goombay Smash – originated at Miss Emily’s Blue Bee
Bar, and Green Turtle Cay is home to the number one Band in the nation: the Gully Roosters. Not only is there entertainment and fine dining to be enjoyed, but living accommodations are second to none. There are numerous rental and cottages and living accommodations to choose from particularly at the Green Turtle Club and The Bluff House. The quaint attractiveness of the New England-style homes with their high roofs, expansive porches and picket fences adds to the allure of the community. Richard “Blue” Jones’ Bush Medicine Garden is another fascinating point of interest for those wanting to learn about natural remedies for common ailments. All in all, each visitor will find something that makes them fall in love with Green Turtle Cay, but what tops the list of any island destination in The Bahamas is the warmth and genuine hospitality of Abaconians. Abaco’s sizeable second homeowner base may just be a testament to that. Undoubtedly, while visitors fall in love with the natural beauty of our islands and cays, truth be told, the real charm is leaving home to discover that home is where the heart is.
