to Abaco Ahhh…the Abacos! V

isitors are encouraged to take a closer look at this multifaceted destination, which has the ability to totally embrace and captivate the unsuspecting. In fact, many immediately want to know the possibilities of owning “a piece of this paradise.” The variety of the Abaco ecosystem guarantees an exceptional vacation experience and encourages many repeat visits to explore the marine wonders of the Sea of Abaco or the habitat of the wild horses and the Abaco parrots in their natural environment. “Island hopping” excursions are also second to none, as is relaxing on one of the top tena beaches in the world; fishing for sport or for sustenance or engaging in a kayaking trip through the lush mangroves while viewing the interesting aquatic and bird life along with other natural phenomenon of nature. Enjoying the culture and history of the local people is also an excellent pastime, which is encouraged through the wide range of heritage festivals and community ‘get-togethers’ in every neighboring cay and native settlement. So, it is a real pleasure to welcome you and we hope you enjoy the Abacos. In the meanwhile, do recommend us to your friends and families and we will look forward to seeing you again, and again.

ith hundreds of miles of shorelines, abutting either to the usually calm and warm waters of its west side, or to the deeper waters of the Sea of Abaco on the East, with access to the Altlantic Ocean beyond the Cays, Abaco offers numerous fishing possibilities. The mangroves that line the shores in many areas serve as a nursery and the complex reef system that surrounds the island is the home of a multitude of fish species, including groupers, a variety of snappers and other small comestible fish. The deeper waters hide the big billfish and the larger comestible fish, such as wahoo, mahi-mahi or tuna, so there is an abundance of all kind of sea creatures, easily turned into delicacies under the cooking skills of a Chef or a housewife. This cornucopia of seafood helped support the first inhabitants of the island, the Lucayan Indians and the 20 Destination Abaco

Loyalists settlers who arrived in the late 1700’s, adding the much needed protein of fresh fish easily caught to the fruits of the land, not so easily produced. Nowadays, crawfish, conch and grouper fishing is still one of the supporting industry of Abaco. However, tourists are incited with a different type of fishing: sport fishing.

Sportfishing From the skilled art of bone fishing in the “flats” and the “Marls” that line the west coast from Crossing Rocks to Cooper’s Town, to the needed endurance of big billfish and large comestible fish fishing, a few miles off the East coast, there is a type of fishing to suit individual taste from pleasure fishing to competitive fishing and a fish for every fisherman willing to try his luck. Early in the year, the Abaco Beach Resort Bonefish Classic is an invitation to participate in a catch and release bonefish fishing contest. Hosted at the Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour over a weekend at the beginning of January, this tournament is the first one of the Redbone Celebrity Tournament Series on Abaco. The second one takes place at the beginning of April, still hosted at the Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour, it includes among its sponsors the Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club. Prizes are awarded in several categories such as Grand Champion Angler, Top Lady Angler, the best in the bait or lure categories and more. Members of Abaco Fly Fishing Guides Association usually guide the fishermen to areas where their patience will be rewarded by something, if not the biggest fish ! Last April’s tournament, which was particularly rewarding as far as number of fish caught, will

be featured on the ESPN Salt Water Series. Both tournaments are usually well attended and much fun with cocktails reception at the end of each day and awards distribution dinner at the end of the tournament. For information you may contact the Secretary of the Fly Fishing Guides Association, Mrs Cindy Pinder at 242 366 2163, check on the internet under Redbone Fishing Tournaments or contact a guide listed in the information at the back of our publication. Mark the Memorial Day week for another important billfish tournament, the H M Y Invitational Billfish Blast, organized by the Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour, celebrating this year its tenth anniversary. It features four days of fishing and entertainment and is popular with fishermen as well as non anglers. The Treasure Cay Hotel Resort and Marina, also host its own championship in June, the Treasure Cay Billfish Tournament, inaugurated in 1973. The event is held over five days and often record size fish have been caught during that time. For the visitor who wants to take his chance at spear fishing or trawling, note that grouper fishing is usually prohibited from some time in December to some time in February. The closing of the season depends on the time the fish are spawning and may vary each year. Crawfish season runs from August 1st to March 31st and stone crabs may be caught only between October 16th and May 31st . Visitors are welcome to catch fish for their own consumption while on the island Give a call to the local department of Marine Resources at 242 367 3482 to familiarize yourself with the regulations. what to do

Eco-Adventures

Kayaking in Abaco W

hile paddling through the creeks and mangrove estuaries of The Abacos, you will see some of the most dense stands of coppice and mangrove systems that you can imagine.

Mangroves

There are four types of mangroves native to the Bahamas. The red mangroves are more prolific and actually grow out into the water sending their root system deep into the underwater ground cover. They are much larger systems and in some areas the kayaks can be maneuvered under the vast canopy of leaves and branches. The black mangroves have a much smaller leaf and grow more on the island sending their root system through the soil and up through the water in order to provide the necessary air and gasses which promote its growth. The white mangrove and the buttonwood mangrove grow up even further on the island and not as close to the water as the red and black Mangroves. These mangroves are nature’s way of protecting the island from erosion and the coral reefs offshore, from pollution. They protect the island from erosion caused when torrential rains drop millions of gallons of water on the land from the run-off that would erode the structure of the island. 28 Destination Abaco

Mangroves protect the reefs by slowing down the island’s rain run-off and permit more of a gradual dilution of the rain into the salt water. Corals cannot survive drastic changes in salinity because of their inability to recover from these rapid PH fluctuations. Another benefit of the mangroves is that they are the nursery for embryonic crab, fish and lobster young. Mangrove root systems provide shelter and protection for these young until they grow large enough to fend for themselves in the open water.

Blue Holes

The Abaco islands sit on a calcium carbonate structure with a myriad of underground caves and caverns throughout the island. On occasion while gliding over the surface, ocean caves called blue holes may be observed. One of the reasons fish live near these ocean blue holes is because of the cracks and crevices along the walls of the cave. Many of these blue holes force large amounts of water in and out from a link to the deep ocean. This high volume of water also helps attract fish by providing a larger concentration of food. While kayaking, the water clarity will differ according to location, and in some places you will be able to see the ground

what to do structure and animal life below your kayak. Occasionally, you may want to snorkel to get a better view of what is under you. You may actually be able to see some of the young crab, fish and lobster swimming under and around the extensive root systems. In the trees and along the shoreline various bird life, orchids, airplants, mosses and grasses can be observed. Some of the birds that can be found in trees are hummingbirds, ospreys, mockingbirds, warblers, Bahama woodstar, swallows and more, depending on the season. Your Bahama Host certified tour guides will be able to identify many of the local birds that you may see. Kayak tours are offered in Hope Town, Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour areas. Treasure Cay Golf Course

The Treasure Cay Golf Course is a superb 18-hole championship course designed by Dick Wilson, one of America’s most renowned golf course architects, with several classic courses consistently ranked in “Golf Digest’s Top 100”. The best known probably being the Doral “Blue Monster” in Miami. The tropically landscaped 186- acre Treasure Cay golf course was the last Dick Wilson planned; he died before it was completed in 1968. His assistant, Joe Lee, completed the course and went on himself to become a famous golf course architect. At 6,985 yards from the blue tees and with 66 strategically placed sand bunkers, the Treasure Cay course presents a 40 Destination Abaco

formidable challenge with ocean winds, tight fairways and a layout that makes you ponder every club selection. It will certainly make you want to play it more than once. If you are a single looking for a game, just show up at 8:30am and Pro Ronnie Bootle will assist you in finding a partner. Tee times are not necessary! In fact, if you tee off after 10:30am, you may not see another group – you may be playing your own private championship course! During the winter season, homeowner tournaments are often held at bi-weekly intervals. Guests are most welcome, a reasonable and fun way of meeting new people. Very attractive golf packages are available to guests staying atTreasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina.

ABACO ARTIST

M

ultitalented artist, Zyandric Jones, displayed his budding talent at a very early age by drawing cartoon characters on the walls of his Dundas Town home. Fortunately, in her wisdom, Zyandric’s mother did not scold him as most mothers would have done, but instead recognized his amazing gift and encouraged her son who has gone on to produce amazing works of art. “As soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil, I began drawing on walls, paper napkins and anything else I could find,” he remembers. Now, 28 years later, Zyandric’s paintings appear in private collections all over the world. Zyandric’s tremendous potential, strong artistic sensibility and eye for detail were recognized by his 11th and 12th grade art teacher at Abaco Central High School who assisted him in furthering his education and he went on to pursue two year’s of study in Fine Arts and Design at the College of The Bahamas where he achieved the Dean’s 42 Destination Abaco

List. After completing his Associate Degree, focusing on painting and drawing multimedia, Zyandric decided he would like to follow his childhood love into the world of cartoons. Towards this end he entered a competition for a scholarship to the Computer Masters Institute of Technology in Victoria, British Columbia, and placed first out of 600 applicants worldwide. Unfortunately, just before Zyandric was to take up his place, the college went bankrupt but he was fortunate enough to be offered immediate placement at the Vancouver Film School, the most re co gn i ze d film school in Western

Canada, which even honored his scholarship. While at the Vancouver Film School, Zyandric studied visual effects and 3D animation and upon graduation worked on his own short sci-fi action film. It is one of Zyandric’s major dreams for Abaco to one day have its own film production house. “ Abaco is the ideal place for such a venture because of the incredible beauty here,“ he enthuses. Zyandric has been studying film and screen play writing online and has a passion for playing and developing computer games, logos and icons along with Junkanoo music and costume construction, film, television, 3-D animation and sculpture. Zyandric presently works for 3 D’s Custom Signs in Marsh Harbour and is shooting a commercial for the company. He is also making a music video entitled d’Rock. Although Zyandric has all of these ‘strings to his bow’ he is best known for his paintings in oil and acrylic and his dramatic charcoal character sketches which he has exhibited in several art shows including the Tahiti Beach Art Show, Abaco Inn Art Show, Abaco Beach Resort’s Annual Arts Festival and ‘Colour of Harmony’ at The College of The Bahamas in Nassau. Later this year he is planning to hold his own solo show. Portraits are what Zyandric paints most often as he finds facial expressions fascinating and always selects subjects with interesting features. He finds the faces of people like Mahatma Ghandi and Albert Schweitzer captivating, and when searching for live models he tries to find people with comparable character in their faces. Zyandric’s gift for portraying every line and nuance of a person’s expression is amazing and looking at one of Zyandric’s portraits is like looking into the very soul of that person.

This artist’s favourite medium is graphite which is what he uses for most of his portraits though lately he has found a new medium which he enjoys; ballpoint pen ! Yes, just a common everyday pen we would use to scribble down notes Zyandric uses to bring faces to life. Although he professes that his second favourite medium is acrylic he also uses some pastel and admits that he enjoys every aspect of art. Although his portraits are always what seem to draw the most attention, Zyandric does not limit himself to only these. He branched out from doing the portraits he so enjoys because, since this is a tourist destination, our visitors like to purchase something to take home to put on their wall which will be a vivid reminder of the beauty of our islands and so he also paints landscapes, seascapes and some animal pictures. Zyandric is presently working on a five painting series of abstracts of our island’s curly tailed lizards entitled ‘Island Dragon’. He also accepts commissions. Zyandric’s work is on display at several Marsh Harbour locations including Café La Florence, Blue Sky Gallery and Jamie’s Place. His website is www.zanarts. com and he can be contacted via email at zantime@ hotmail.com Destination Abaco 43

Capital City of Abaco

by Canishka Alexander

arsh Harbour is the capital city of Abaco, an island renowned for its reputation as the “Sailing Capital of the World” and one that is equally known as a yacht man’s paradise! The island’s first settlement was founded at Carleton Point, now known as Treasure Cay, by a group of 600 Loyalists in 1783. Although there are a number of settlements popular to Abaco, Marsh Harbour is its business center, offering an appealing display of marinas at Boat Harbour, the Jib Room, Mangoes Restaurant, and the Moorings, as well as frequent ferry service to a number of outlying cays. Marsh Harbour has been designated as the hub for the cays which many travel back and forth to daily. There are a few boat rental establishments that you can rent from if you are a veteran of the seas and want to explore. Now there are numerous modes of transportation to choose from with the availability of car, bicycle, motor scooter or boat rentals. Stop in at Dive Abaco, a business which offers full dive trips to tunnels and caverns.

Many of Marsh Harbour’s most popular restaurants are located right on or near the waterfront specifically Mangoes Restaurant, Angler’s Restaurant at Boat Harbour, Snappas Bar and Grill, Curly Tails, and Jaime’s Place. Kentucky Fried Chicken is Abaco’s only fast-food chain and is generally open seven days a week. As you head inland, there is more authentic Bahamian dishes to sample at Golden Grouper, Jaime’s Place, Geno’s Restaurant and Island Cafe. Mandarin Fine Dining Restaurant offers Chinese cuisine. Don’t forget to stop at either Best Yet Bakery or Island Bakery to purchase fresh, homemade bread or perhaps a slice

where to stay of pie or a doughnut to nibble on later. Visit Mrs. Darville or Mrs. Lovely Reckley to acquire some quick lessons on straw work. Blue Sky Art Gallery features a number of eye-appealing artwork by local Bahamian artists. Or join the Hor-

ticulture Society at one of their weekly meetings to learn gardening tips. Also, go to the organically certified Neem factory where Neem products are made, and take a tour of the building where you’ll notice a distinct difference in the quality of the air you breathe. A nice assortment of banking facilities including Western Union are also available. The post office is located in the Dove Plaza Building and FedEx’s delivery service is conveniently located on the way to the Marsh Harbour International Airport. Guesthouses, motels and hotels abound namely the Great Abaco Beach Hotel, which is the largest Bahamian owned hotel in Abaco as well as Regattas, Island Breezes and the Ambassador Inn, which are all well known. 60 Destination Abaco

There are lots of supermarkets and wholesale grocery stores to choose from like Abaco Groceries, M & R Foodstore, A & A Foodstore, Family Market, Price Right and a newcomer: Save-A-Lot. For those looking into their duty-free shopping options, the jewelry stores offer a magnificent line of fragrances and jewelry from reputable names, while the liquor stores most certainly have something to appeal to your taste buds. The town has been grown tremendously over the past several years with a population of approximately 2,800 people; however, don’t think for a moment that there is nowhere quiet for you to sit and rest a while. In fact, there is a place called Rest-A- While located right next to Snappas and it includes a map of the Marsh Harbour Area. Additionally, there is the Memorial Gardens and Wall of Heroes where there is seating among vivid splashes of trees and plants. If you have some spare time, you can even go to the Crossing Beach. Another favoured spot, especially for lunch-goers, is Owanta’s Pond on the way to the airport where you can feed the turtles and fish there. Marsh Harbour boasts of many achievements and is home to the Pelican Cay National Park, an underwater preserve. Go on an exhilarating snorkeling experience on Mermaid Reef with its vast variety of tropical fish and of course, reefs! As a place accustomed to its repeat visitors, it’s no wonder many visitors travel annually to Marsh Harbour or become second-home owners in a location that offers endless possibilities, a great escape, captivating smiles and the heartwarming hospitality of its people.

A FAMILY INVESTMENT by Peggy Thompson

H

ope Town is a quaint village on the island of Elbow Cay due east from Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas. The scenic harbour, shadowed by a candystriped, hand-wound lighthouse is dotted with boats of all sizes and shapes from all over the world. The coastline boasts sandy white Atlantic Ocean beaches and coconut-lined Sea of Abaco cove beaches; thus one always can find a beach to enjoy even on a windy day. There are a variety of accommodations from beachside cottages at Sea Spray Resort, to romantic rooms & suites at the Abaco Inn. There’s also a historic inn on the sandy beachfront called Hope Town Harbour Lodge

which offers cottages and rooms. Several companies have private homes for rent including Elbow Cay Properties, Hope Town Hideaways, Lighthouse Rentals and Tanny Key Rentals. The 5.5 mile cay can be explored by rental boat, bike or golf cart. Albury’s Ferry Service provides round trip tickets with boats leaving Marsh Harbour as early as 7:15 a.m. and returning as late as 6:30 p.m. Their schedule provides lots of choices throughout the day and one may charter also. Guests arriving for the day enjoy visiting the Wyannie Malone Museum, library, playground, gift shops, coffee shop, ice cream shops, deli, wine bar, bakery and of course, climbing the 101 steps of the Elbow Cay Reef Lighthouse. The Abacos in general and Hope Town specifically have a unique mix of adventure, relaxation and fun that appeal to the entire family. Grandmother enjoys the holiday as much as Junior! The technology that wedges the generations apart is forgotten in the excitement of Destination Abaco

where to stay swimming with wild dolphins, a big fish on the line or spotting a diving turtle. Abaco is the one place where the whole family finds common ground. With no traffic in the village proper, children are free to ride bikes and just play as they did in the “old days.” They enjoy a sense of freedom unknown to many children in today’s modern world. Being able to venture out on their own makes Hope Town a memorable holiday for the youth and allows the adults to truly relax. “It reminds me of my childhood,” quips Donna D. of Chichester, UK. “We’ve been coming for years and it is our family tradition for my grandsons to ride their rental bikes to Vernon’s grocery to buy the bread straight away from the oven. I’ve learned to give them enough money for two loaves as one undoubtedly gets sampled and I can’t blame them. When they pick up a key lime pie, we ask them to leave the bikes as we’ve had a few “puddings” in the past.” By far the best part about staying on Elbow Cay is boating. Most folks rent a boat from one of the companies on the island or in Marsh Harbour. Preparations for a day of boating fun are made simple as several shops provide picnic fare including The Sugar Shack, Munchies and Hope Town Coffee Shop. Snorkel gear is available for purchase or rent at Froggies Out Island Adventure, fishing supplies can be found at Lighthouse Marina, children’s beach toys at Sundried T’s and hats and cover-ups at most gift shops. “Luckily we found a waterproof book on sea life at Ebb Tide,” details Elizabeth W. from Chevy Chase, MD. “Our son and daughter had so many questions after snorkeling that we had to buy a reference. We loved flipping through our book to determine which fish we had seen or would look for tomorrow.” 68 Destination Abaco

HopeTown Sailing club organizes sailing regattas throughouttheyear, summeractivitiesforchildren and has an award-winning Jr. Sailing program.

If anyone options out of the boating day there are still lots to do: yoga classes; a community swimming pool – short term visitors’ memberships are available; luncheons with guest speakers; art showings; a beauty parlor; several masseuses; scenic walking paths zigzagging across the island and most accommodations have “share libraries,” internet, board games, hammocks, etc. There really is something for everyone! “My dad takes us fishing but my mom cooks the fish, “explains Brennon W. of Sparks NV. “We eat fish every day when we are here. I only use my Game boy on the plane because I am too busy fishing when I get to Hope Town.” “We spend more time with our parents when we stay at Hope Town Hideaways then at home,” details Lilly B. of Orlando, FL. “They are both doctors and very busy. In our villa we cook together and eat all our meals together – very unusual at home. Sometimes we come three times a year and we always make our family photo Christmas card in Hope Town. It is our favorite place to go and one day I

am going to bring my children here.” Depending on what time of year the guests arrive, there are special events. In autumn, there is a open swim from the mainland to Hope Town, ending with a cook-out and award ceremony. The locals hold an old-fashioned box car derby the Saturday after US Thanksgiving. The middle of the island has a big hill, (actually called “Big Hill”) and the entries take turns drag racing down while spectators line the road. Lots of food and drink are available and the day is exciting and fun for all ages. Christmas and New Year’s in the Abacos is one of the favorite times because there are so many activities from singing cantatas, to caroling throughout the village, to fireworks and junkanoo parades. Accommodations book up fast as many families make it an annual event and reserve for the next year upon leaving. In February the Hope Town Fire & Rescue holds an all-day event including raffles, local food specialties, games from the lollypop pull to darts, auctions as well as demonstrations on safety. The Abaco Rage, a classic wooden sailing sloop that is based in Hope Town but races throughout the Bahamas, has several large fundraisers that include locals and visitors, alike. days to be sure and these “dock parties” usually commence after Christmas and Easter. Easter Sunday is the annual candy hunt at the center of the village. Children come from church, sailboats moored or from other islands just to gather up the candy and hunt for the golden egg containing a cash prize. On weekends there are often wine tastings or art showings or special fundraisers usually involving food – grilled fish, conch salad, conch fritters, chicken souse, roasted wild pig, etc. There are fishing tournaments in April & May and all are welcome. Throughout the season (November to August) there are dog parades, talent shows, and impromptu beach volleyball, bingo & trivia nights at Capt. Jack’s, outdoor movies at the Hope Town Lodge and youth group on Saturday night at the church. The Hope Town Sailing Club invites any sailboat (rental or private) to their race series free of charge. It is fun to watch even if you are not on a racing sailboat. Sailing continues into the summer with Regatta Time in Abaco – a 10-day island-hopping race filled with parties and special events. In August, the opening of lobster season is another popular time to visit Abaco. There is a“sail away”– a tradition gleaned from Nassau, where boats all meet off a

sandy beach for music, barbecues, tropical drinks, and games. This event, like most in the area is a fundraiser for local charities. With so much to do in Hope Town for every generation, are there any complaints? “I hate going back home, “declares Marie V. of Savannah, GA. “My sister Julie cries the whole way back on the airplane because she does not want to leave either. My mom had to explain, we can’t come back to Hope Town again if we don’t leave first. This usually works.” And so it goes, the families keep coming back again and again for the old-fashioned quality time that is rare in today’s hectic world. As the world deals with economic woes and people worry about their depleted financial investments, it may be wise to consider the most important investment: your family. Hope Town, Abaco, really brings in the dividends and high returns.

Treasure Cay The most versatile vacation spot on Abaco By Mirella Santillo

T

reasure Cay’s claims to fame are many, but some of the most appreciated are its incredibly beautiful beach, one among the ten best in the world. Its 18- hole golf course designed by famous Dick Wilson and its hidden history: from the float of Spanish treasure galleons that sank off its coast in 1595- divers are still looking for some of the unclaimed treasures- to the nearby Carleton Point, settled in 1783 by the Loyalists, the starting point of immigration on Abaco. Treasure Cay is one of the most accessible vacation destination on Abaco with its own airport, only a few miles away or by boat, across the Florida Strait. Boaters will find a 150 slips facility at the Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina. Driving along the long road that leads to the small town- past villas on the left and the Golf Course on the right- does

not really prepare the visitor for the hidden amenities awaiting to be discovered. But on Treasure Cay, you can choose to do nothing or you have the opportunity to do everything. For a laid back vacation, swim in the turquoise water, the color of which you will not see anywhere else in the world, lay on the powdery sand of the 3.5 mile beach, basking in the sun under a coconut tree or discovering the island history with a book you might have checked out at the nearby library. Walk along the main road of the settlement all the way to the ocean or along the miles of canal, enjoying the sight of water birds such as egrets, herons or ducks. throughout the year, including the yearly Audubon Society Bird Count that takes place around Christmas time. For the active visitor, the possibilities are countless. Spend a morning on the golf course; there you’ll find partners or worthy opponents. Several Golf tournaments take place every year, starting at the end of January with the Rotary Club of Abaco’s Tournament, a fund raising event favorite of second home owners and visitors. Fishermen, choose between bone fishing on the flats or deep sea fishing. Qualified guides for either sport are available. For bone-fishing, contact the Abaco Fly-fishing Guides Association at 366-2163, the secretary, Mrs Cindy Pinder, will happily refer you to a guide in your area. For deep- sea fishing, enter one of the yearly fishing tournaments offered by the Treasure Cay Hotel Resort and Marina. Or simply snorkel and spear fish off the nearby reefs. Free divers or scuba divers, look up Treasure Divers at 365-8571. The owner, Mr Brent White will take you to unforgettable diving sites. Tennis, cycling and nearby excursions are other possibilities. Go back in time while spending a day on nearby Green Turtle Cay, only a ferry ride away. Ask a taxi driver or a tour guide to take you to the Blue Hole and visit the native horses, rumored to have swam ashore from the Spanish galleons. You may even drive to Crown Haven and hop on the ferry for a couple of days on Grand Bahama. Let not these day time experiences prevent you from enjoying a tropical drink or two at Coco Beach Bar or at the Tipsy Seagull Bar while watching the sunset, or ending the day with a gourmet dinner at Spinnaker Restaurant. On a more practical note, should the unplanned happen, Treasure Cay has a well appointed private clinic, the Cor76 Destination Abaco

Man-O-WarCay Old Fashioned Fun for Everyone! by Peggy Thompson

T

he Abacos is a collection of islands and cays east of Freeport, Grand Bahama and northwest of The Bahamas’ capital city of Nassau, New Providence. This lesser known Abaco chain still offers “laid back” island living, especially on its outer cays like Man-O-War. Man-O-War Cay is a 2.5 mile long barrier island with 300 Bahamian residents and 135 foreign residents. Settled around 1780 by Loyalists to the British Crown, the population evolved from farmers to boat builders and fishermen. The two main village thoroughfares (about 10-foot wide cement “highways” with a speed limit of 5 mph) are a mix of neat and tidy private homes, gift & craft shops. The waterfront Sail Shop offers original products like sailcloth luggage, handbags and cushions. You can observe the seamstresses sew while you shop. A traditional Loyalist village, Man-OWar boasts lovely beaches and a popular harbour or year-round mooring. The inhabitants are a tight-knit community with traditional values such as attending regular church services and the practice of not selling liquor on the island. It is a peaceful, charming village where

people are friendly, children are free to roam along the flower-lined tiny streets and everyone enjoys the pristine ocean beaches. The men of Man-O-War are known for their highly skilled carpentry and the boat building industry still flourishes. Originally specializing in wooden smacks, sloops and schooners, boat building is one area where the island has changed with the times. Albury Brothers Boatyard builds a series of fiberglass runabouts popular all over the world. The original mold was taken from a wooden boat designed in Man-O-War and planked with the native Madeira tree. Wooden dinghies, half-models and traditional rocking chairs are still hand carved on the island from the native trees by artisans Joe Albury and Andy Albury; both have shops offering their wares. Other specialty shops include The Painted Fish at Man-O-War Marina, Joe’s Studio which offers wood carvings to glassware and clothes. Sally’s Sea Side Shop sells Androsia material and crafts and native paintings done by Sonia Weatherford. A great collections of souvenirs are available at Mr. Edison’s shop and Sam-

Trips to all the national sea parks or to neighbouring islands and regular scheduled trips for snorkeling and diving as well as special events are planned through this family-based company. Man-O-War offers a variety of restaurants including Dock and Dine, Hibiscus, Island Treats Takeaway and the newest, Dips, Sips & Wishes or enjoy an ice cream from Scoops as you stroll through the village. Some of the talented bakers and chefs cook right out of their homes. Ena Thompson’s famous coconut tarts are in high demand and Miss Lola delivers her hot bread, cakes and pies and does cash sales to pedestrians if there are any goods left after the regulars. The cay’s narrow streets can accommodate golf carts which guests to the island can rent at Man-O-War Marina. Boats are also available from Waterways or Conch Pearl and they can be

delivered. Albury’s Ferry takes passengers from Marsh Harbour and back five times a day. In addition to the natural attractions of the beaches and reefs, locals & visitors alike enjoy the softball games which include concession stands with homemade foods, the basketball court and the playground. Man-O-War residents, fondly known as “Sojers” (soldiers) -- possibly alluding to their island’s “war” name or the native shell-

reat Guana Cay’s long beach stretched into the blue distance. Nearby, a friend and I grabbed our snorkels and slipped into the clear water. We hovered over the reef, a bubbly wonderland animated by waving sea fans and neon fish darting around coral formations. A school of squid calmly floated nearby. I’ve never seen these shy creatures in the wild and was fascinated by the sight. Not at all like the ship-attacking, tentacle-waving monsters in the movies, these diminutive creatures were like living jewels. Translucent fins rippled along their glittery, iridescent bodies. When I reached out with my arm, the creatures edged backwards and changed colors, flashing deep shades of blues and browns. After the swim, we warmed ourselves in the sun and enjoyed lunch with a few cold ones at Nippers Beach Bar and Grill. Along with food and entertainment, patrons are treated to a breathtaking vista of the deep Atlantic Ocean and the shal-

low, sun-dappled reefs near shore. A leisurely stroll through town is an ideal way to sightsee and walk off lunch. Peaceful and relaxing, Guana Cay is home to one of the smallest out island communities in Abaco’s midsection. The island’s main road arcs around the sheltered Settlement Harbour where a ferry regularly brings in mainland goods like mail, fresh produce and supplies. Destination Abaco

where to stay Along the main road on the southeasterly end of Settlement Harbour, Guana Harbour Grocery offers a selection of foods and basic pharmaceuticals. Orchid Bay Marina and Resort, a short distance from the grocery, offers protected dockage and full marine service with a bar/restaurant. Walking north along the concrete road, there’s a chance to stop and shop at Tom’s Tshirts and the gift store at Guana Seashore Villas. The marinas and resorts around the island have gift stores for a day of shopping adventure. We came up to a tiny, pink building, Fig Tree Wine and Spirits, on the waterfront side of the road. Here visitors can buy bags of ice and browse through a selection of adult refreshments. Nearby, a few people were socializing in the shade of the store’s namesake, Guana Cay’s legendary fig tree. On the other side of the road, The Art Café filled the air with scents of fresh bakery and home made bread. Along with bakery, meals are served here and patrons can sit inside the building or enjoy the scenic view on the

balcony. We continued following the narrow road as it snaked under a green cathedral of coconut palms. Sunset Beach, overlooking Fishers Bay, was at the road’s end. This relatively sheltered bay is a popular anchorage for visiting boats. Moorings can be rented from Dive Guana, located on Fishers Bay. Dive Guana is a must-do adventure that offers scuba and snorkel trips and island hopping excursions. Grabbers Bed, Bar and Grill at Sunset Beach recently added a new gift shop near the pool. Giggling kids were splashing in the water, working up appetites for the bar/ restaurant’s tasty menu offerings. That night, while reading a book aboard my sailboat anchored in Fishers Bay, I could hear the laughter and good cheer coming from the this playful party zone. If you’re not staying on a boat, Guana Cay offers a variety of quality accommodations. Flip Flops on the Beach, Ocean Frontier Hideaway and Dolphin Beach Resort offer tranquil escapes for seekers of paradise. Spending nights on Guana is to have the ocean’s surf lull you to sleep in your own private place nestled in lush groves of tropical flora and coconut palms. You’ll feel as if you’d stepped
