TONY CUNNINGHAM AND THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium this afternoon for another knock-out fixture. Our visitors today are from Worksop, who will be playing the Rams for the very first time. We hope everyone who has made the journey up enjoys their brief stay with us – result apart of course! – and have a safe journey home afterwards. Town will arrive here as slight favourites as a result of them playing in the higher division, but we all know that in cup competitions, league positions aren’t always that important. Same can happen in league games. When Lancaster City arrived here eleven days ago, they arrived on the back of a 6-0 mauling of New Mills, and unbeaten in league action. What odds would you have received on a Rammy win by the same scoreline?! So, whilst Worksop are the higher placed club, we certainly won’t be daunted as we look towards making further progress after the victory at Warrington Town.
RATTLING AROUND After that excellent win against Lancaster, we ventured over the Pennines to Wakefield last Saturday. Whilst we returned with all three points, the score-line barely reflected our superiority. However, of more interest was the fact that the crowd was listed at just 64. This in a stadium that holds over 10,000! There must have been 50 Rammy supporters there, so where is the support, in what is a basically rugby league town, for association football? It must be so demoralising to put in all that effort yet fail to attract the local followers. Don’t get me wrong. I do enjoy visiting Belle Vue. As a grounds buff, it’s a brilliant old stadium, with a great history. Not too long ago, I re-watched “This Sporting Life”, a ‘60’s film featuring Richard Harris, based on the goings-on at a rugby league club. This was all filmed at Belle Vue, and it was fascinating to look at the two stands that are no longer there. In all probability, Belle Vue will not be there for much longer, although there can be two reasons for this! The rugby club have been looking for a new modern stadium in the town for some time now, but over the last couple of years, the Wildcats have lurched from one financial disaster to another. So whilst a new ground may well be on the horizon, I guess it all depends upon the club actually surviving. Whether Wakefield FC will be allowed to follow them to the new ground or not is doubtful. This season they have been locked out of the hospitality boxes behind the goal, and have had to relocate to the tea hut alongside the pitch. There doesn’t seem to be much cosiness in the relationship. Which tends to confirm the discussion I had when we were up in Barrow recently. I asked an official up there why the two clubs (football and rugby league) don’t pool their resources and share one stadium, as both are struggling financially. “It doesn’t work”, he explained. “Well, Huddersfeld , Wigan and Hull seem to accommodate both codes quite nicely”, I replied. Then it was suggested I look at the experiences at St.Helens, and Leigh. I suppose I can add Wakefield to the list, so point proved! But to see Rammy play at such a massive stadium in front of a woeful crowd really was quite surreal. It’s when we turn up at such venues that I appreciate the support that we attract down here at the HWRS. Other clubs must look on with a certain amount of envy. Enjoy your non-league football!

accomplished youth We welcome worksop town to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium for this FA Trophy tie in what we are expecting to be a really keenly fought contest and another chance to pit our witts against a team from a higher division. Worksop are mid table in the Premier Division with a league record of p12 w6 d2 l4 so have had a simlair start as ourselves. We come into the game on the back of a great run. Our latest victory on Wednesday night against Atherton LR made it two defeats in the last thirteen games (one of which was a 94 minute winner) which after our slow start is showing signs that we are really starting to click into gear. We used the Lancashire Trophy game against Atherton to give some of the younger lads some minutes and were really pleased with how the slotted into the side. After a bit of an edgy start, once they settled, they looked the part and we are pleased with their progress to date. The squad is starting to look really accomplished, with some good strength in depth. At the time of writing we are only without the services of Phil Edghill due to his lastest setback at wakefield. Edgy will be given all the time he needs to regain full fitness and I’m sure he still has a big part to play in our season. Again im sure you'll get behind the lads today as you always do, and we will do our best to give you something to cheer about and will go out to get the right result. Enjoy the game Coyr.... - Glenn
Ramsbottom United progressed to the next round of the County Cup with a relatively easy victory over North West Counties side Atherton LR, despite a spirited effort from the visitors. Joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley introduced a number of youngsters to the side, and they all performed admirably on the night. Matthew Warburton looked solid at the back alongside Andy Dawson in the first half, and Billy Priestley in the second. Former Bury FC youngsters Matthew Prickett and Tommy Toth competed well, Prickett with some fine wing play, and Toth with a non-stop midfield performance, whilst up front Callum Smith deservedly got his name on the score-sheet with two goals. After a tentative opening, the visitors had the first chance on ten minutes when a low ball in from the left by Gareth Shaw was turned away for a corner from which Grant Shenton held Craig Dickinson’s header. A minute later, some fine trickery by Lee Gaskell on the left set up Prickett, but his header was blocked. Warburton was unlucky to see his header clip the bar and bounce over, before Smith, through on goal, was denied by the keeper, as was Gaskell whose follow-up suffered the same fate. Tom Brooks twisted his way into the area, only to be denied by Andrew Farrimond in the LR goal, as the home side began to exert pressure on the visitors defence. LR still had their moments, and Robert Molyneux was unlucky to see his pile-driver sail inches past the far post with Shenton well beaten. For the Rams, Prickett came close to opening the scoring when his low drive bounced off the inside of the post and ricocheted along the goal-line before being cleared. Brooks was denied by Farrimond, and Smith had a shot hacked off the line, as the home side sought the goal their dominance deserved. It finally arrived on 39 minutes. A high ball into the box was expertly brought down by Brooks, and he turned his marker before fir-
ing home past Farrimond and in by the post. The Rams almost increased the lead before the break, when Prickett fired straight at the custodian, who was then relieved to see an attempted header clearance from Tom Cahill graze the outside of the keeper’s post. The second half had barely started before Ramsbottom doubled the lead. The ball fell kindly for Smith, and he had no trouble blasting the ball home from ten yards. Ben Hardcastle tested Shenton from 20 yards as LR attempted to regain a foot-hold, before Lee Gaskell twice looked to extend the lead. He firstly dribbled along the penalty area before unleashing a shot that just cleared the bar, then was inches away from converting a Prickett cross after good work by the youngster. Substitute Dominic Smalley danced his way into the area before firing just off target, whilst, at the other end, Shenton denied Mark Adams at close range. On 68 minutes, Adams did manage to find the net when he created space in the box, to bring the visitors back into the game. Smith should have extended the Rams lead minutes later, when he did all the hard work racing into the box, but as Farrimond came out, he lofted the ball over the keeper, but also over the bar. Atherton looked for an equaliser, with Shaw trying his luck from 30 yards, before Shenton was forced into a brilliant save to turn a close range volley over for a corner from which McKillop saw his header blocked. A minute later, on 78 minutes, the home side made the game safe. A great run down the right by Jordan Hulme saw him release the ball to the unmarked Smith, and he made no mistake in collecting his second and the Rams’ third of the night. Brooks twice came close to extending the lead, but on the night the home side had done enough to deservedly move into the next round.

EDITORIAL - FROM THE DUGOUT I am writing this after the 3-1 home victory against Atherton LR. We obviously had a number of changes for this game and I am happy to confirm that these were tactical changes and not down to any injuries sustained by the missing players. Joel Pilkington and Danny Warrender were given the night off with a number of first team players also on the bench to allow some of our under 21 and 18s to feature in the game. Andy Dawson recovered enough from the hamstring strain he picked up at Warrington to start this fixture and only came off at half time to look after the injury and prevent overdoing it before Saturday. Gary Stopforth came off midway through the second half as a precaution and Lee Gaskell came off having picked up a knock on his Achilles although neither injury will be bad enough to keep either from The Worksop game. Overall we have benefited, as a squad, from a quieter week. With having our midweek game on a Wednesday night it has meant that we didn't train Tuesday evening and won't be doing our normal Thursday night training. Although these training sessions are crucial for fitness and cohesion, having no training gives everyone some extra time off to rest any knocks or sore bits they are carrying and also gives us all a break from one another. The first few months of the season see us playing two games a week meaning that as a squad of players and staff we spend a lot of time together (seeing each other more than our actual families on occasion) which in a positive manner makes us tight knit and great friends but also makes us overly comfortable with each other and means people aren't adverse to telling each other what they think. On occasion this happens on the pitch which makes it look like we aren't playing as a team when really it is just an extension of the dressing room where if something needs saying we are more than happy to say it. We are all looking forward to Saturdays tie with Worksop in the FA Trophy and with a fully fit squad available for selection it should give us every opportunity for victory. - Katy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rammy are now the proud owners of a Hands-only CPR machine, as advertised by cockney meat-head Vinnie Jones opposite. Katy and Darren have been along to the training session where they studied situations such as the Muamba incident at Bolton. Apparently you have just three minutes to get a failed heart started, and the quick-thinking Bolton physio was performing CPR after just 17 seconds, with the defibrilator doing its thing in just over a minute. The defibrilator is located in Tony’s hut, just inside the players’ entrance.

Worksop Town was formed well over 150 years ago in 1861, but the first recorded items referring to its existence were dated 1873. At the end of the 2007-08 season, Worksop Town was locked out of its Sandy Lane ground by the leaseholder, who later was to sell the ground to Parramore FC from Sheffield. 2008-09 was spent at Hucknall Town FC and after a difficult first half of the season whilst the club were reeling from losing the ground, manager Peter Rinkcavage turned the fortunes of the club around and results were much improved after the New Year, maintaining the club’s Premier League status. 2009-10 saw the Tigers play their home games at Ilkeston Town which became a turbulant season for the tigers. It started with promise and ended almost in disaster, players coming and going because of financial problems. John Hepworth [chairman] decided that he had done all he could do and handed the club over to Jason Clark. 2010-11 saw Jason at the helm and under his guidance we had a good season, playing at Retford United. He appointed Martin McIntosh as first team manager part way through the season and only just failed to get a play off place. 2011-12 The Tigers were back in town after three years on the road, back at Sandy Lane, sharing with the new owners Parramore Sports and hoping to do well. A Sheffield Senior Cup victory over Frickley at Hillsborough augured well for the future. Last season brought another new manager in Simon Clark looking to improve on recent performances, but after looking good for a play off place the team faded away to finish 9th and he departed. This season will be the first for new Manager Mark Shaw who will concentrate on more local players while looking to improve on last years record.

Mark Shaw – Manager, aged 34 Shaw joined the Tigers in May 2013 on a 2-year contract from NCEL side Shirebrook Town. Prior to that he led Sheffield FC to the Evo-Stik Division 1 South play-off semi finals. He has also managed Sutton Town AFC, Lincoln United and Retford United, who he guided from the NCEL Division 1 to the Unibond Division 1 South with successive promotions. As a player Shaw had a short spell with the Tigers. He also played for the Forest Green Rovers, Tamworth, Alfreton Town, Matlock Town, Eastwood Town, Parkgate, Retford United and Sutton Town AFC. Ben Hallam – Goalkeeper, aged 22 Hallam joined the club in June 2013 from Shirebrook Town. He began his career as a junior with Hull City, before going on to play for North Ferriby United, Frickley Athletic, Hallam, Armthorpe Welfare and Arnold Town. Laurence Gaughan – Defender, aged 23 Centre half who signed this season from Matlock Town. Had spells with Sheffield United, Liverpool, Celtic, Oxford United, Galway United. He had a previous spell with Worksop at the end of 2011/12 season. Miller started his career at Lincoln City before moving to Barnsley. He has also had spells at Accrington Stanley, Hereford United and Gainsborough Trinity. Phil Roe – Defender, aged 21 Full back who has made an excellent impression at the club since signing from Matlock Town in February 2013. Roe was a product of the Sheffield United youth system. Whilst with the Blades he had two spells on loan at Retford United before moving to Port Vale then Matlock Town. Jack Barnett – Midfielder, aged 21 Barnett is another player that followed Shaw to Worksop from Shirebrook Town this season. A local lad, who spent his early career at Sheffield Wednesday before joining Sheffield FC; also had a short spell with Hucknall Town.
Shane Clarke – Midfielder, aged 25 The box-to-box midfielder signed from Gainsborough Trinity this season. He is a product of the Lincoln City Centre of Excellence and has also played for Gateshead and Boston United. Josh Davies – Midfielder, aged 23 The creative midfielder first joined the Tigers for the 2011/12 season from Gainsborough Trinity but missed the entire season due to a cruciate ligament injury he suffered in pre-season. He spent last season at Brigg Town before re-joining the Tigers for this season. Conor Higginson – Midfielder/Striker, aged 21 Higginson joined the Tigers from Shirebrook Town at the start of the season. He began his career at Mansfield Town where he made his first team debut at 17 years of age. Also had spells at Glapwell, Sheffield FC, Grantham Town and Rainworth Miners Welfare. The Rams travelled to the home of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Rugby League club to take on a struggling Wakefield team. However, it needed a determined second half display which eventually saw them grind out a hard-earned three points. The first half produced a disjointed performance by the visitors, and it saw them go in at the break a goal in arrears. The home side pounced as early as the eighth minute. Following a series of corners, one of which saw Ian Flannery scramble the ball off the goal-line, Bleau finally blasted the ball home from ten yards to give the hosts an early boost. Within a minute the scores should have been levelled when Lee Gaskell missed a great chance with a header from Dominic Smalley’s inch-perfect cross. That was the first of a number of squandered chances as the Rams attack failed to find their recent form. On 21 minutes Gaskell made the most of a loose ball to round the keeper, but his cross to Grant Spencer saw the Hyde loanee bundled off the ball as he was about to strike, and the referee ignored his plea for a penalty. Jon Robinson raced into the box, but although his shot beat the keeper, it also beat the gaping goal and found the side-netting. Danny Warrender was inches away from converting a Spencer cross, whilst Mark Ayres twice went close, firstly with a header then when he couldn’t quite control the ball at the far post following a corner. At the other end, Thornton tested Grant Shenton in the Rams goal from 20 yards, whilst the keeper brilliantly kept the score down when he tipped a fierce free-kick onto the bar and over for a corner. Although chances had been created, the half-time whistle sounded to end a disappointing performance from a team arriving on the back of three successive victories. That was increased to four as a result of a total change about in the second half. The Rams upped the tempo and the home side spent most of the second period in their
own half as the visitors at last showed what they are capable of. The game turned on two goals within the space of four minutes. As at Farsley a few weeks ago, a 60th minute substitution resulted in a 61st minute goal. Spencer was replaced by Phil Dean , and within a minute the scores were level. A perfect lob by Flannery on the edge of the box saw Mark Ayres out-jump his marker and he sent a well-judged header looping over the advancing keeper and into the back of the net. On 64 minutes, a decisive run down the left by Dean saw his low cross somehow evade three of his team-mates in front of goal, but a minute later the Rams took the lead. A long throw from Warrender was headed goalwards by Flannery, and Bleau headed firmly into his own net to negate the goal he had scored at the other end. From then on it was a case of how many more could the Rams score. As it happened, it was none, but it wasn’t through lack of effort. On 70 minutes Phil Edghill ploughed his way through only to be thwarted by the keeper, Gary Stopforth fired inches wide with a 30 yard free-kick, whilst Smalley wriggled his way into the area, but instead of squaring the ball, he went for glory but screwed the ball wide of the far post. With five minutes to go, the home keeper was lucky to stay on the field. A well-judged through ball saw Gaskell chasing the ball goal-wards, as Bennett raced out of his goal and handled just outside the box. A lenient referee only produced a yellow card, and from the free-kick the keeper brilliantly tipped Stopforth’s effort round the post as it was about to squeeze into the top corner. Flannery then equalled Gaskell’s first half miss when he completely misjudged a header from six yards out, but the final whistle blew after that, and the Rams second half performance had earned them the three points that looked distinctly unlikely 45 minutes earlier.

Rammy United’s speedy winger cum carpet salesman Phil Dean sprinted to the rescue when a mugger snatched £3000 from a pensioner in the street. The 61-year-old woman had just withdrawn £3000 in cash from the Barclays Bank on Long Street in Middleton town centre when she was targeted. She had taken out he money to give to her son, to help him buy a car, but was attacked by the mugger as she walked back to meet her husband, who was parked nearby on Water Street. Shocked staff at nearby The Carpet Factory saw the man push his victim to the ground and grab the envelope containing the money. Two carpet fitters, who were stood outside the premises on Water Street, immediately gave chase, closely followed by Phil Dean, eventually caught up with the thief, who handed over the envelope before fleeing down Wood Street. Phil said, “I didn’t really know what was going on at first. I just saw the other lads running outside so I followed them. I saw the woman was on the floor and the guy running off, so I chased him. He looked like he couldn’t run much further and saw I was catching up so he turned round and gave me the money. I didn’t really stop to think that he might have something on him. The adrenaline just kicked in.” Phil, who lives in Bury, said he hopes the
thug can be brought to justice. He said, “He’s just a coward targeting a woman on her own like that. I’m just glad I was able to get the money back for her. She was obviously really shaken up, but she was really thankful to all of us.” Stuart Johnson, manager at the store for 25 years, said, “I’m really proud of them. “The lady is a customer of ours and once we saw she was in distress we didn’t have to think about rushing out to help her. Three thousand pounds is a lot of money to anyone. “The robber was just unlucky one of our lads is a footballer and is lightning quick. If I was 25 years younger I would have been out there with them!” Police are hunting the mugger and are appealing for anyone else who may have witnessed the incident, at around 2:15pm on Friday, September 13th, to come forward. The man was white, about 6ft 2ins, slim and mid-20s. He had chipped teeth, a gaunt face, and was wearing a grey hooded top. Det Con Charlotte Humpries said: “Thankfully, this man was deterred and ran off empty-handed, but we are still working hard to try and trace him, and bring him to justice for this robbery. “We would urge any witnesses who saw what happened to call us.”

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACS Good afternoon everyone! Yes, its the voice from the deep south again (yeeeeeee-haaaaa etc etc). Sadly, I am not in evidence today but will be up in a couple of weeks time for a week or so, taking in the home games against New Mills and FC United of Manchester. Really looking forward to it! It continues to amaze me when I watch various news items that so many clubs are struggling to exist. I only have to look a few miles from home to see many such instances of clubs not managing their finances and tottering on the edge of the abyss. Two clubs within the Southampton city boundary, AFC Totton and Sholing, are both two such instances. Totton, who only a couple of years ago played in the Second Round of the FA Cup and were live on ITV, now sit second bottom of the table having faced a very uncertain future during the summer and are still nowhere near out of the woods. While Sholing took the decision to drop back a couple of leagues - to the equivalent of the NWCFL - to try and rebuild again. And then, in the news just last week, saw the closure of Hinckley Town FC, crippled by debts that make your toes curl. And it makes you think .... why??? Why do clubs, with little income, chase the bigger bucks? For some, it has worked. But there are far far too many instances of others vanishing in a cloud of debt. I refer the honourable gentlemen to Rossendale United FC to name but one. However, having seen the general raising of eyebrows and rolling of eyes when I mention to anyone willing to listen about my affinity to Rammy, then I can understand it. Non-league football is not universally respected and, as we saw with the crowd at Wakefield where only a handful of fans were supporting the home side, being far outnumbered by our visiting ones, then you can see why some clubs face such uncertain futures. We hear it time and again at the HWRS about Harry being a tight so-andso. But, in the face of all around the non-league scene, he keeps the reigns very well and would never let our club get to that state. Thankfully, we have a very stable club and a club on the way up with a talented squad and superb managers (hands off Bury ... Bern and Jonno are ours!!!!). We are very lucky to support such a club. For years and years, the club didn't get the results on the park but there was no attempt to throw extreme fortunes at it in search of improvements. Could we have done - of course, but we might not have the team right now. Which is why I am so proud to say that I am a Ramsbottom United supporter, even from the comfort of my flat in Southampton or on a rugby touch line somewhere.

Harrogate Railway Athletic v Rammy, Sat 26th October, 3pm It’s one of those away treks that elicits a groan from all Rammy fans, though we ought to be thankful that it’s not midweek like the imminent trip to Darlington! One consolation is that it’s an hour longer for Cammell Laird to get to Harrogate (and just about anywhere!); another is that for some inexplicable reason the league put Scarborough in the Southern Division, saving us another long trip. Railway Athletic play their home games at the aptly named ‘Station View’ in the Starbeck area of Harrogate, postcode HG2 7JA. If you end up asking for directions then don’t forget that there are two teams in Harrogate, and The Other One is the slightly better known Harrogate Town, in the Conference North. Google Maps suggests a couple of routes - mainly motorway, involving the M62 and A1(M), which it reckons takes 1hr 24mins, and then The Pretty Way along the A59 past Skipton and those military golf ball things at Blubberhouses (where the government do all their spying on our emails). Personally I prefer the A59 way, provided there are no tractors around, and if you stay on the A59 all the way through Harrogate (straight on at the little pub roundabout and then left when you get to that big open green bit in the middle of Harrogate) then take a left after 300m into Station View... and you’re there! The other way involves taking junction 47 off the A1(M) North, following the A59 through Knaresborough on towards Harrogate. You’ll pass Harrogate Golf Course on the left, then cross the railway after 200m or so. Keep your eyes peeled and on the right, immediately after the railway, you’ll see Station View - and from its name I imagine you’ll see Starbeck Station as well! It always seems a little bit fiddlier and a bit further that way, but each to their own. Good luck!

Rammy v Prescot Cables, Tues 22nd October, 7:45pm Rammy face the notoriously troublesome Prescot Cables at the Harry Williams Riverside on Tuesday night. This game comes hot on the heels of a decent run, which has seen the visitors earn draws away at Northwich, Bamber Bridge and Darlington, with a 4-3 home defeat of Radcliffe Borough thrown in. The defeat away at Prescot last season saw Rammy’s grip on a play-off place start to slip, so the team will be hoping it’s pay-back time on Tuesday.

While I remember, I’d just like to mention that should today’s game end in a draw then the Prescot match on Tuesday will be postponed, and we’ll trek down to Worksop on Wednesday evening for the replay. We’d like to extend a warm welcome to today’s mascot Thomas Sharphouse. We hope he enjoys his visit, and gets to lead the team out to an historic win. So here we are, yet another cup game with a hefty pay-out for the winners. £2,700 this time, which would be a great addition to the £14,000 or so that the team have already added to the coffers with their hard work in this competition, and in the FA Cup. Increasing the prize money for the earlier stages of the FA Cup has probably made the competition more important to the lower leagues than it is to the top flight teams. Suits me! I don’t know if you read the disappointing headlines about Barrow’s trip to Atherstone in the FA Cup. The crowd problems at half-time in that game no doubt made the national press because there was so little else going on in football at the time - isn’t it always the way that when the opportunity for some positive publicity comes along, some idiots go and mess it up. I had a look at Atherstone’s normal crowd size, and it appears that they get around 200 or so for their games in the Midland Combination. The visit of Barrow saw almost 900 attending, and no doubt a handful of those were there just for a bit of a kick-off. It seems that a little bit of success at non-league level encourages the trouble-causers to come along, and this was certainly the case when I was involved at Banbury United. We managed to get the crowds up from about 250 to around-about 1000, which meant we had a tremendous atmosphere at games, could bring in really high-quality players, and ended up being a huge talking point for miles around. Sadly this didn’t pass by some of the local scrotes. Banbury was always known as the place to stop off on your way home if the opposition fans and police hadn’t been up for a fight, but we also found ourselves playing host to some of Oxford United’s trouble-makers who’d either been banned from their ground, or just discovered that the Southern League had no segregation. I remember one particular game against table-topping Kings Lynn, where a section of ‘fans’ we’d never seen before waded in and started clobbering away fans at random. Now I’m not saying that it was journeymen hoolies at Atherstone, but it does seem quite a common occurence when teams start doing well. Fingers crossed we never get this kind of silliness going on at Rammy, and if we ever did then I’d like to hope that the decent home fans would help stamp it out pretty quickly - which is what we managed to do at Banbury. I’m also quite relieved that we didn’t find ourselves in Barrow’s place, having to fight the Atherstone gobshites - those days are thankfully but a distant memory for most of us, and we’re frankly not interested. Right, that’s enough of that. Bring on the Rammy, and bring on that £2,700 prize money!
