TONY CUNNINGHAM AND THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium tonight for the game against our old friends from west Yorkshire. Ossett Town are having a fine season, lying just below the play-off places, so it was something of a surprise when their manager Shaun Elliott decided to move from Ingfield to Northern Counties East side Shaw Lane Aquaforce. The club moved quickly to appoint a successor on Friday by bringing in experienced manager JohnReed. John has enjoyed great success at the likes of Harrogate Town, Stalybridge Celtic and Buxton, whilst also spending a short time in the hot-seat at Goole, and more recently as assistant manager of Scarborough. He brings with him his trusty side-kick Clive Freeman as assistant manager, and the appointment could prove to be an inspired one for our visitors. John and Clive begin their tenure here at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium, and whilst wishing them both well in their new positions, I must insist that the goodwill begins after tonight! We, of course, continue to enjoy a rich vein of form, and the victory at Padiham was very comfortable. We need to continue this run, as the play-off places, once again, look like going down to the last game of the season. We don’t want to suffer the heartache of last April again! ANOTHER ONE GONE I find it so frustrating that the non-league game does not attract the kind of publicity it deserves. The wonderful “Non-League Hour” vanished off the Radio Lancashire airwaves last year after 19 years, and Radio Manchester’s non-league segment of around half-an-hour depends upon there being a rugby game being played on a Friday night, otherwise it’s cancelled. I’ve been enjoying, for the last couple of years or so, “Pav’s Patch” on Tameside Radio, every Friday night at 6pm. “Pav” or Mike Pavasovic, is a well-respected journalist who’s hour-long show featured all the Tameside non-league clubs along with Glossop North End. Alas, when I tuned in last Friday, he had been replaced by someone else, who decided to spend half the hour playing music, and then informing us that future programmes would feature various other sports and not just non-league. My reading of that is that the non-league coverage will be reduced from 55 minutes to around 10! Five Live’s Non-League show continues to be broadcast at the ludicrous time of 5.30am on a Sunday morning (shunted into the buffers by Sports editors who have a total disregard for the wonderful world of non-league football), although the podcast can always be found on the internet. I just find it so frustrating that our level of the game is ignored so much, but let an obscene new contract be signed by one certain individual of shall we say, somewhat limited intelligence, and the whole media clubs together to ensure mega-coverage in all the papers and on all radio and television stations. Some fans, incredibly, are proud of the signing! Sorry, obscene is not the word to describe the offer of £300,000 a week. I don’t actually think there is a word that describes it accurately. For those ignorant souls who continue to cough up their hard earned money to contribute to the vast wealth of such individuals, all I can say is you must be out of your minds. Each and every one of them is being taken for a ride by clubs, agents and players, who rely upon their blinkered obsession to blank out all thoughts of reality. This is a classic example of why I never watch top level football. Thank goodness for the reassuring presence of non-league football….real football for those of sound mind!

Firstly I’d like to welcome the players, management, staff and supporters of Ossett Town - hopefully you will enjoy your visit, result apart of course. Saturday saw us make the short journey up to Padiham for our East Lancashire Derby, and it turned out to be a enjoyable afternoon for all concerned with Rammy. It was a very pleasing display with some fine individual performances, but more importantly a great team effort. A couple of great goals saw us return with a well-earned three points and send the massive 'Rammy Firm' home happy. A big thank you has to go out to everyone who made the effort to travel, but I’m sure you all had an enjoyable afternoon. The support we take on away days is fantastic and very vocal, with some erm interesting songs developing. As a group we love the away days, so thanks to you all. Tonight sees a new management team in

place for Ossett in the shape of the vastly experienced John Reed and his staff, and this season sees them pushing for a playoff spot, so we expect a very tough fixture. As with saturday up at padiham, we will be looking for revenge for the loss we suffered at Ossett earlier on in the season and will try to keep this impressive run of results going. A couple of updates squad-wise; firstly its bad news with Chris Denham as he’s had a reoccurence of the groin injury which required surgery in his Chorley days and looks likely to keep him out for the remainder of the campain. As for Cedric, we’re just waiting on confirmation if his international clearence before we see him in a rammy shirt.. Hope you enjoy the game tonight and let’s hear some of the away day noise here at the Harry Williams Riverside. - Glenn

memorable derby win 1-4

Arbories Memorial Sports Ground 22nd February 2014 Att: 271 Rammy Goals: Hulme(12,15) Gaskell(59) Dean(75) Padiham Goal: Boyle(71)

Ramsbottom United maintained their push for a play-off place with an emphatic victory in the east Lancashire derby. Having succumbed early in the season at home to Padiham, they gained their revenge on an afternoon when the three points rarely looked in doubt thanks to two early goals which set the tone for the match. Despite losing influential midfielder Gary Stopforth due to a suspension, the Rams were able to welcome back Dominic Smalley after a lengthy lay-off, and he looked back to his best as he lasted over an hour. Playing downhill, Danny Warrender was inches away from connecting with a Grant Spencer cross, before two goals in quick succession put the visitors in the driving seat. On 13 minutes, a left-wing Spencer corner found Jordan Hulme almost on his knees at the far post as he managed to get his head to the ball and direct it into the roof of the net from close range. Within two minutes, the same combination doubled the advantage. This time, the corner was swung in from the right, and Hulme again found space by the far post to flick the ball in from five yards out. Spencer had a shout for a penalty turned down when his shot appeared to strike a defender’s arm, before the same player sent in a rasping free-kick which Sean Davis in the home goal was relieved to gather. Another corner caused problems for the home defence, and Lee Gaskell applied the final touch which saw his header clip the bar and sail over. As the half progressed, Padiham finally made inroads into the Rams defence, with both Chris Turner and former Ram Keiron Pickup going close from free-kicks. For the most part, the Rams were in control, and further efforts from Spencer and Hulme could have extended the lead as the half-time whistle sounded. Full-back Owen Roberts almost added to the score early in the second half. Firstly, he drove inches over the bar from just outside the area, before watching his free-kick sail inches over the top.

Arbories Memorial Sports Ground 22nd February 2014 Att: 271 Rammy Goals: Hulme(12,15) Gaskell(59) Dean(75) Padiham Goal: Boyle(71)

Fine work on the left wing from Phil Dean saw Gaskell go agonizingly close to nodding in a third, but he was not to be denied on the hour mark as he shrugged off a defender to latch onto a neat through ball from Spencer, and drive it home from 15 yards past an exposed Davis in goal. The Storks substitute Louis Mayers tested Grant Shenton in the Rams goal with a fierce 25-yarder, moments before the home side found a consolation. On 71 minutes, Danny Boyle found space to fire home from close range as the ball fell kindly for him in the area to make the score 3-1. Just four minutes later, any hopes the home side had of staging a comeback were soon extinguished by a contender for goal-of-the-season. Dean gathered the ball in his own half before setting off on a mazy run up-field. He skipped past three challenges as he broke into the area and confidently fired past Davis to restore the three goal advantage. A quite superb solo effort. The visitors continued to attack, and with the minutes ticking down, substitute Darren Green saw his goal-bound effort flicked round by Davis for a corner, from which Gaskell looked on in frustration as his header clipped the outside of the post. Green still had time to fire in a free-kick that cleared the bar by inches as the Rams completed a comfortable win to confirm their challenge for the end-of-season lottery and a place in Evo-Stik Premier. On this showing, the odds must be very much in their favour.

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACS

Good evening y'all!!! Hope all is well. I am sitting in the terminal of Washington Dulles Airport awaiting my flight back home after a week of enjoyment in Washington DC and Baltimore and sampling all that the USA has to offer ... mainly crap television and monsterous food portion sizes which has completely wrecked my dieting efforts over the last 10 days! It has been quite an education over here on my first real visit across the pond (I went to Florida but that doesn't really count). 'Soccer' is very much a minority sport over here and you only have to flick through the immense amount of television channels to know which sports are king around here ... NFL, basketball, ice hockey, baseball. Oh, and if the USA aren't winning in the Olympics in Sochi - then it basically doesn't get mentioned. For example ... "x from Russia won the gold, y from Sweden the silver but our guy did us proud - oh yes - Billy Bob Cheeseburger rode in with a fantastic bronze .... he's the man!!!". Major League Soccer is small time and anyone thinking it is different is kidding themselves. Good luck to David Beckham on his effort in creating a Miami United team for the MLS in the near future - sorry, but you are heading for failure. Soccer isn't big. Everything else is. But soccer isn't. It took us ages to find a television in a bar showing the Champions League games during midweek! But, of course, at 10am on Saturday morning, I was plugged in on the computer and watching all the activity from Padiham and was delighted to see us pick up another three points against the ex-Rammy United XI (ok, that is an exaggeration!!). Can we be stopped? Another win which keeps us in fifth place and in the play-off hunt and all in the garden is rosy and hopes are high. Of course, tonights game against Ossett Town sees us play one of the team we have lost to this season, right at the start of the season. There is no such thing as revenge in sport - some say there is - but we will be out to right that particular result as we did on Saturday a few miles north. Well it is time for the flight home. But I will finish off with a little bit of 'home' football news and it is a huge congratulations to Gosport Borough F.C., who have reached the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley after beating local rivals Havant and Waterlooville in the semi-final on Saturday. They are rock bottom of the Skrill South and facing relegation square in the face but they have a massive day out at Wembley to look forward to against former Football League opposition Cambridge United in a few weeks time - what a fantastic achievement for them. Which leads me to think that one day, in the non-too-distant future, could that be Ramsbottom United? YIPPEE-KI-AY RAAAAAAAAAAMY !!!!!!

Calum Ward - Joined in October 2013 from Glasshoughton Welfare where he hit the net 15 times before November. He’s finding his scoring boots at NPL level and looks like he belongs here. Chris Wood - Ex Frickley and Parkgate striker. A great target man who holds the ball up and brings other players into the game as well as contributing his fair share of goals to the sides quest for glory.

ossett town

Ossett Town Football Club was formed in 1936 at a public meeting chaired by the Mayor of the Borough of Ossett and a former Yorkshire League referee called John Carter was given the task of bringing to Ossett the highest possible standard of football. The new club played in the Leeds League (later renamed the West Yorkshire League in 1939), played on a pitch behind the Fern House Working Mens Club on Wakefield Road and used various local pubs as headquarters. During World War II, the team switched to the Heavy Woollen League and had to use a pitch on Back Lane when the army commandeered Fern House. After the war in 1945, Town joined the Yorkshire League. Town won the West Riding County Senior Cup in 1948, beating Salts 4-2 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade. In 1950, Town finished 3rd, our best position in the Yorkshire League, we also scored a record 120 goals that season. Attendances at some games were well over 1,000, during the 1940s and 1950s, the Yorkshire League contained the 'A' teams of Leeds, Huddersfield, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley, Doncaster and so on, many top players learned their trade in these teams, such as John Charles, Denis Law, Ray Wilson, Peter Swan, Tommy Taylor, Jackie Charlton and many others. In 2003-04, Scott Cooper started the season as man-

ager, but by October Town were bottom of the league and Steve Richards took over as manager, Town finished 14th, just missing out on promotion to the Premier Division, because the top 13 clubs were promoted to replace those clubs who had joined the newly created Conference North division; but the demise of Telford United created an extra place in the Premier Division, which went to Ossett Town. In Town's first season in the Premier Division, they finished 16th. Season 2012/13 saw the appointment of Craig Elliott as first team manager. With a number of new players being brought in, it took time to find a settled side and the team finished a credible 12th in the league, ending up the highest placed West Yorkshire team. However, this season will go down as cup season with the team arguably playing in their biggest game of the club’s history, when we lost away to Stockport County in the FA Trophy. Town also reached the semi-final of the County Cup before going out to FC Halifax Town. October 2013 could go down as a momentous month as Graham Firth stood down as chairman after 28 years, the members voting to appoint James Rogers to take over the position as well as a number of members joining the committee for the first time, 2013/2014 has started well, this could be a catalyst for the club to kick-on.

“our promotI wasn’ion tmatonch, theandpitcrubbedh for mud into my knees so that in the photos it looked like I’d played!,,

Jordan Hulme joined Rammy just before Christmas 2011 and the 23- year-old striker has found himself playing both up-front and at right-back. Recently his confidence is rocketing and he’s started to really find his shooting boots. We caught up with him during the week. How did you get into playing football, and where did you play before coming to Rammy? I’m Rammy born and bred, so unlike most footballers I’m actually playing for my home team, though I started out being picked up by United when I was about six. Bolton took me on from age 8 until they let me go at 16 because they decided that I wasn’t physically developed enough for the kind of direct football they were playing at the time. I had a spell at Walshaw and then at Padiham, where I scored nine goals in fifteen matches, before Johnno’s recommendation got me a move up to Clitheroe. Karl Gardner, who was in charge at the time, asked Johnno if he knew any decent young strikers, as their main forward had picked up an injury, and Johnno put my name forward. I played well for them and scored a couple of goals, but the other striker came back and then a new manager arrived, bringing in his own striker. That’s when Johnno and Bernard suggested that I come and give it a go at Rammy. So you’d played with Bernard and Johnno before? I played 5-a-side against Bernard when I was at Woodhey, and with Johnno for a while at Walshaw. It was good of them to give me a chance at Rammy as my confidence was really low at the time. Even at Rammy it took me a while to get my head together and I was in and out of the team quite a bit. When your head’s down, your performances suffer, and then you hear one or two mutterings amongst the fans. In the end I wasn’t even on the pitch the

day we won the league, which was really disappointing; though I have to admit to rubbing mud on my knees so that in the photos it looked like I’d played! Back then I was waiting, expecting something to happen and my confidence magically reappear, but it doesn’t work like that. You have to make it happen, whether it’s just yourself or the whole team. All I know is that my confidence is back, and that’s what I’m concentrating on. So you reckon that this team has what it takes to get one of those playoff spots? Absolutely! I think we can really do something with this team. We’ve definitely got it in us to get to the playoffs, and on our day we can beat anyone. It’s all in our own hands, no-one else’s, and provided we turn up to the games, we can get there. How did a striker like you end up pulling on the right-back shirt? We were really stuck for a number 2, and the lads asked if anyone was willing to give it a go. I’m happy to play anywhere on the pitch, so I thought I’d give it a try. Those first couple of games I was alright coming forward, but I remember the defending being a bit of trouble. I reckon I’m starting to really get the hang of it now though. I think that attitude sums up so much that’s right about Rammy - that anyone in the squad is willing to do anything to get Rammy ahead. Would you say that’s right? I’m really enjoying everything at Rammy, they’re really great lads and the whole club is fantastic.

From the second you arrive at the ground, it’s like one big family. There are no cliques like you get at other clubs, and everyone’s really good mates. We all share a bit of banter, and some take more than their fair share while some give it a bit more. Spenner and Wiz are terrible for sitting there handing out abuse while Gary Stopforth is really hyper and phones me at all hours to talk rubbish! Owen and Pilky are the most sensible, and Owen goes on about what he ate last night and how healthy it is - though to be fair, Pilky went on a mad bender at the Christmas Doo and changed a few people’s minds. I think one of the best things at Rammy is the way our support is growing. The atmosphere up at Lancaster was amazing, with everyone singing their heads off, and the crowds are getting bigger and bigger. The place is really rocking, though sometimes it’s only Johnno’s dad that you can hear singing. I hope we can keep it getting better and better - it’d be lovely to hear some of that singing at home games. While we’re talking about the Christmas Do and going on mad benders, what’s this thing you’ve got about getting your kit off? And what does your girlfriend think of it? God knows; I’ve always done it. No idea why cos it’s not like I’m buff or anything. More often than not it’s Johnno egging me on after I’ve had a few too many beers. Lorna’s not too happy about it, but she’s ok as long as it’s only with the lads. What do you get up to off the pitch, work-wise? I’ve just finished uni, studying Physical Education and School Sport. I need some experience working in schools and then I go back and do another year at uni. At the moment it’s youth work that’s keeping me out of trouble. One last question - what’s the best thing about being at Rammy? Playing for my home team is the best thing, and the great fans... hold on, that’s two things!

EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUB

First of all an apology to Robbo. I’d somehow got it into my head, after talking to Katy, that Robbo’s ankle injury was serious enough to cause him to pack up playing. I bumped into him at Padiham and he’s expecting his operation this week and is likely to be back playing at Rammy sometime soon. I really hope so because, as I’ve said on a number of occasions, Robbo is most definitely a Rammy legend, and someone that any team would be delighted to have in their lineup. I remember the first time that we watched Rammy; I looked down the teamsheets and saw that some fella called Andrew Sensale had been scoring shedloads of goals but ended up pushed to the bench on the return of this Robinson bloke two matches before. As we sat in the tea-bar before kick-off, I wondered what was so special about Robinson that he could depose one of the league’s top strikers so Robbo and Stopforth choosing the easily... ten minutes into the game healthy option at Padiham we could see exactly why. He harried, hassled, out-headed, out-chased and manically hunted down every ball that was his to chase (and many that weren’t). He disposessed defenders, the goal-keeper, midfielders, even the referee! As we watched more and more Rammy matches, we saw Robbo pop up in midfield, at centre-back and even in nets, with no care at all about how many goals he was chalking up. Robbo is undoubtedly a Rammy legend, and I can’t wait to see him pulling on the shirt again. My apologies for the misunderstanting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tonight’s game is another one of those humdinging six-pointers, so let’s hope for a game that proves to be as much entertainment as Jordan’s new haircut! Bring it on!
