TONY CUNNINGHAM AND THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL Thank goodness the wet winter appears to have finally dried itself out, and hopefully there will be no more postponements. With this wish in mind, we finally welcome everyone concerned with Harrogate Railway Athletic to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium tonight. After our disappointing defeat on Saturday against one of our bogey sides, Cammell Laird, let’s hope that our good run against tonight’s opponents can continue. Three wins from three games since we gained promotion, and with an eye firmly planted on that final play-off spot, a fourth victory tonight would suit very well. Of course, football isn’t quite that easy to predict, but we really will be going all out to dispense from the memory Saturday’s performance, which although it showed plenty of applicaton, produced nothing in front of goal. Let’s hope tonight can be the start of another good run. BRILLIANT Anyone who was at Prescot Cables ten days ago, no doubt smiled at the time, but for those who weren’t there, the funniest moment of the afternoon was when Scott Burton (I wish him a speedy recovery, by the way) lashed home our third goal. The PA man began the announcement of the scorer with the words, with the cartoon character intonation, “That’s the way to do it!”. Superb! CRAZY Those of you who know me will be aware of my dislike (the actual word is a little stronger, but that will do for now) of top level football. If I needed a reason to question football at that level, you only have to see the news that came out last week. Two clubs, now in the Championship, but recently in the obscene Premier League, have unveiled collective debts of over £330,000,000! Step forward QPR and Bolton Wanderers as classic examples of how not to run a football club. Thank goodness Ramsbottom United have Harry at the helm! SAD Vauxhall Motors have announced that they will be quitting Conference North at the end of the season. For a number of years this club has performed miracles by just staying at such an elevated position. Now, alas, financial reality has hit home that average gates of around 150 are just not enough to justify playing in such an exalted league. I was talking to their Chairman Alan Bartlam a few years ago and he was telling me of the difficulty in running a non-league team on Wirral. Ellesmere Port Town, New Brighton and Ellesmere Port and Neston have all folded in the recent past. Cammell Laird, as we know, survive on average gates of around 60, whilst Motors, two leagues higher, have struggled to convince the locals that non-league football is an attractive proposition. Credit to the board at Rivacre Park for deciding that the long-term future of the club has to be protected, but it really is a sorry and sad situation. I wish Alan and everyone else there all the best for the future. Enjoy your non-league football!

We welcome all the players, management, staff, and supporters of Harrogate Railway to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium for this evening’s clash. We wish them a safe journey here and home, and hope they enjoy the hospitality we offer. With ten league games to go we find ourselves really at the business end of the season. There is still a long way to go with many twists and turns ahead, with possible lows and highs, but what we all must do is not panic. We are still in a fantastic position, tucked in 6th, just outside the playoffs. Teams still have to play each other and points will be dropped where possibly people don’t expect. I’m not saying we are relying on other to slip up as we still have to play the likes of Farsley twice, so in reality it could go all the way down to a nerve jangling last game of the season yet again; only this time hopefully with a better outcome.. I’m buzzing, and I know the lads are, to have another home game so soon after Saturday’s dissapointment.; let’s face it we battered them and on another day could easily have come away winning the game 2 or 3 nil, and if that had happened then everyone would have said what a great performance. In some ways it’s a sign of how far we have progressed that teams come here fearing the worst and have to set up to spoil us and stop us playing our game. That’s what we have to become used to - if teams try to take us on footballing-wise then they often come out on the wrong end. So we have to look at the bigger picture and not let setbacks de-rail our aims to achieve a play off spot. What I will say, and it was commented on after the game Saturday, is what fantastic support again you all provided even though things weren’t going our way. Hopefully we can get a couple of bodies back in for the run in, as were going to need the squad. On a bad note we lost Scott on Saturday to a pretty bad and deep gash to his ankle though hopefully it wont keep him out too long. It’s a massive ten games to go; to coin a phrase, it’s ten cup finals, starting tonight. Please keep getting behind the lads as you have, and we love seeing the traveling army away. Keep believing...enjoy the game - Glenn

A little of the Cammell Laird treatment for Grant Spencer

The curse of the Lairds struck again as the Wirral visitors completed a quick-fire double over the play-off chasers, meaning that after four games, the Rams have yet to beat Cammell Laird. Not that there was any lack of effort, for the hosts ran the game for the most part, but their opponent’s defence held firm as the usually free-scoring Rams failed to find the net in a league game for the first time since last August. The early loss of inspirational midfielder Scott Burton hardly helped the cause. A tough tackle that went unpunished left the player with an open gash that required substantial treatment, and he was substituted after just 15 minutes. The Rams, though, still had much of the possession but despite controlling the game for long spells, they failed to find a way through Laird’s resolute defence, and, particularly in the first half, rarely looked like scoring. Visiting keeper Mike Langley had to cut out a dangerous cross from Grant Spencer, with Phil Dean and Lee Gaskell lurking for a loose ball, and he had to be alert when a snap-shot from Spencer looked like sneaking in by his left-hand post. In fairness, the visitors also failed to trouble the Rams defence for the most part, but gained a foot-hold on 34 minutes via the penalty spot. Substitute Tommy Toth was adjudged to have brought down Laird’s Craig Cairns as both players chased a ball that looked like going out of play. Jamie Henders gratefully accepted the chance to open the scoring by blasting the spotkick home, and for all their effort, the Rams found themselves one goal down. The second half began with some exerted pressure from the home side as they went in search of an

equaliser. Gaskell was presented with an opportunity when he was on the receiving end of an intended back pass, but he couldn’t find the spot, whilst the same forward was inches away from converting an excellent left-wing cross from Dean. United were made to pay for the missed chances on 57 minutes when Cammell doubled their advantage. A superbly struck free-kick saw home keeper Grant Shenton produce a magnificent save as he deflected the ball onto the crossbar. The defenders then appeared uncertain as to how to clear the danger, and the confusion allowed John Couch to make them pay by firing the loose ball home from just inside the area. Gaskell should have reduced the arrears ten minutes later when he inexplicably struck the bar when it looked easier to score, then Spencer found Langley in the right place to deny him from close range. On 73 minutes the visitors should have added a third. With the Rams committed to attack, Laird broke down the left. An inch-perfect low cross from Cairns found an unmarked Henders at the far post, but the normally reliable striker somehow managed to slice the ball high and wide. A long-range effort from Billy Priestley sailed harmlessly wide, whilst substitute player-manager Anthony Johnson couldn’t get his head onto an inviting looping lob from Spencer. The Laird held on quite comfortably to produce a minor shock and put a dent in Ramsbottom’s promotion ambitions. For all their possession, it turned out to be one of those days when nothing seemed to come off for the Rams, and they must be glad to see the back of Cammell Laird for at least one more season.

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACS Good evening one and all, hope you are all well and looking forward to tonight's game. You will be pleased to know that I am not here as I headed back to Southampton on Sunday afternoon. Why would you be pleased ... well, my last two visits to watch the Rams have been the away game at Cammell Laird and the home game against Cammell Laird. Both defeats! So, maybe its time for me to just keep my watching brief from afar. Maybe it is time for me to give up watching football completely. Having sat alongside Tony Cunningham in Gigg Lane's South Stand on Friday evening to 'endure' the Black Pudding derby between Bury and Rochdale (which was a dreadful game but some of the Bury brethren seemed to enjoy it and the police had a lovely evening too!!!), we both agreed that we would be much better entertained a few hours later at the HWRS. Entertaining, yes it was but ultimately disappointing as two teams went at it. Sadly, there was only one team actually playing football and the other just scrapping away trying to get what they could. Unfortunately for us, the latter won. Which means that the battle for the play-offs just got that little bit harder and we come into tonight's game with Harrogate Railway Athletic (shall we just call them HRA at the HWRS, it's easier!!!) on the back of a defeat and with Scott Burton missing with a huge lump missing from his ankle, courtesy of a nasty looking challenge that the referee deemed to be unworthy of his card waving. Cammell Laird had 5 players booked on Saturday ... but the player who caused Scott's injury wasn't one of them. Shows you what kind of game it was. Once again, I look back on a terrific weekend and it was so good to see so many in attendance. 305 for a game against the Lairds, who barely bring anyone, shows just how far we have come. It is always good to come and watch the Rams. As I said to a few in the bar on Saturday evening, my mates at home just do not get my affiliation to this great club. They don't get it at all. They would if they saw the great cameraderie that is always on show inside and outside the ground. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the bar afterwards with the supporters and the players until such a late hour. It was also good to see Matthew Edgington and his dad John as well. It is always good to see them, considering what happened to Matt and the family just a few short years ago and to see our former player is good spirits are returning to the Edgy that we all remember from his playing days is a great boost. So, come on the Rams. Keep that superb 'singing section' going (which I enjoyed being a part of on Saturday!!). Onwards to greater things. As it would fill me with such pride to be able to tell my mates to watch Sky Sports News every single day and see the name of Ramsbottom United there in the Evo-Stik Premier. They would know who we are then ...... YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMS!!!!!

MANAGER: BILLY MILLER Billy is a keen sportsman who thrives in a team environment and is involved a great deal with Football Coaching and Development. He took over the reins at Liversedge in November 2010 and although on a tight budget managed to keep them in the NCEL Premier Division. A happily married man with 2 children. BROMLEY, Stephen (Striker) Stephen recently signed from neighbours Knaresborough Town. A striker who has a proven record of knowing where the net is. Has been a useful addition to the squad already with a hattrick already to his name CARTMAN, Nathan (Striker/Midfielder) Nathan is back for his third spell at Railway. Played mostly in a wide position last time he was down at Station View but has found his right position up front whilst playing for Liversedge under Billy Miller. Was top scorer for them with 17 goals 2 seasons ago and will be looking for more of the same in his new midfield role. Nathan was virtually an ever-present last season and was chosen by his fellow players as their ‘Player of the Year’ for 2012/13. CROOK, Peter (Goalkeeper) Peter has just recently signed on for Harrogate Town and is also dual registered with Harrogate Railway Athletic. A confident young shot stopper that was originally a youth player at Scunthorpe United. Peter has also played for Ossett Albion, Barton Town and Ilkley Town. His previous clubs include Garforth Town and Goole. IBRAHIMI, Fatlum (Midfielder) Fatlum played most of his football in season 2012/13 with Harrogate Railway Reserves and Academy. Has forced his way into the first team this season with some impressive displays in the middle of the park KIDD, Greg (Midfielder) Greg signed for us at the start of last season but unfortunately due to work commitments could only play a handful of games for us. This season he’ll be looking to force his way into the starting line-up. A wide player who can play either side

Mike has played most of his football during his time with the Army. PARKES, Simon (Midfielder) Simon has been at the club since he was 6 years old. Very competitive and never likes to lose. RADCLIFFE, Craig (Defender/Midfielder) Craig joined Harrogate Town in August 2011 after a very successful trial period at the club. Starting as a youth player at Middlesbrough, he was loaned out to Durham City during the 2005/2006 season. Cambridge City would be his next club in 2006 and Craig would go onto make over 130 appearances. Towards the end of his stay at The Lilywhites he was loaned out to Bury Town where he made a further 10 appearances and scored 1 goal. A very cultured player, Craig has a great range of passing and a fierce shot on him. Craig joined Bradford Park Avenue for a three month loan spell in September 2012. Craig is now duel signed with Harrogate Railway for season 2013/14 THIRKELL, Dan (Defender) Dan is a product of our Junior Section. Has captained the 1st team in 2012/13 in the absence of Jon Maloney. WOOD, Simon (Defender) Simon was one of several players signed from Liversedge at the start of season 2012/13 whilst under the managership of Billy. Although it took a while for him to settle Simon has now made the right-back spot his own with some strong performances as the season wore on. YOUHILL, Rob (Wide Midfielder) Rob is duel signed for Harrogate Railway and Harrogate Town this season. He scored one or two vital goals for ‘The Rail’ last season whilst on loan and is hoping to cause a few defences problems with his pace and skill with his second stint at Station View. ASSISTANT/PLAYER: LEE ASHFORTH (Goalkeeper) Lee is not an unfamiliar figure at Railway. He played in goal for us for 3 seasons several years ago. ‘Ash’ has also played at several clubs at both NCEL & Unibond level and is now alongside Billy as his Assistant. Lee has several Coaching badges and is also involved with Billy in Football Coaching & Development.

The club was formed in 1935 by workers at the Starbeck LNER depot and joined the local Harrogate League with some success and won the British Railways National Cup in 1946. They borrowed £1,500 from the LNER and more than 300 workers contributed one old penny per week to repay the loan. This money secured ownership of the current Station View site. The 1950s saw the club progress through the West Yorkshire League to the Yorkshire League and they made the second round proper of the FA Amateur Cup in 1953, going out 3-2 at Harwich & Parkstone, a special train conveying supporters to the tie. Sadly the loco sheds closed in 1959, subsequently affecting finances as many of the workers, and players, had to leave the area. In 2002 after a bewildering qualifying competition, the many who travelled to Berkshire witnessed a 2-1 win at Slough Town in the first round proper of the FA Cup. The lowest-ranking club ever to reach the second round were drawn at home to Bristol City, top of the second division, the highest-ranking club in the competition at that stage. This was a fairy-tale tie. What’s more, Railway opted to play the game at home. Temporary stands adorned Station View, Sky TV beamed the game around the globe and the club was the focus of the football world for a couple of hours in December 2002. Bristol City were made to fight for their 31 win, Steve Davey netting with 17 minutes to go, but once

again an injury-time goal sealed Railway’s fate In 2008 the league form proved to be rather erratic but Railway finished well clear of the relegation zone in the end. Incredibly, another mighty FA Cup run dominated and the little club from Yorkshire reached the second round proper for a second time. A battling home victory over then unbeaten rivals Harrogate Town was the undoubted highlight of the qualifying rounds before Blue Square side Droylsden were sent packing 2-0 in the first round. Mansfield Town came to Station View on a soggy Sunday and BBC Match Of The Day screened the game live this time, complete with Ray Stubbs. Mark Lawrenson and Jonathan Pearce. Mansfield won 3-2 but not before two second-half goals from Danny Davidson gave them late scares. The 2012-13 season started with ex-Liversedge manager – Billy Miller and his assistant ex-Railway favourite Lee Ashworth in charge. Although most of the players were from a league below it was a struggle to start with but things came good with a brand of football that hadn’t been seen at Station View for some time and by the end of the season Rail had finished in 18th position with a total of 41 points – well clear of the relegation zone. In addition Harrogate Railway finished with the best Discipline record not only in the Northern part of the League but in all 3 Evo-Stik leagues.

EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUB

What is it with Cammell Laird? Even when we chuck ten up front, the sods beat us, and in front of a really decentsized crowd as well. You could see the frustration on all the players’ faces, and Jordan really booted the barrier behind the goal after the Billy Priestley at the final whistle defender once more - that’s not his Happy Face rode his luck to get a toe in the way... but then is it luck? Cammell Laird are one of the hardest teams to break down; we’ve struggled against them each time we’ve had the misfortune of playing them, most notably last year when we were chasing the play-offs. They’re a strong, disciplined and ultimately frustrating team that know exactly how to match teams like ours. Sadly it’s not really down to luck, or them being our bogey team (unlike New Mills who we face next week!), it’s just that we haven’t got the strength to break them down; particularly after Scott Burton got carried off with a very nasty gash to his leg. So, to cheer us all up, I’ve decided to make the online version of tonight’s programme a Supporters’ Special Issue! If you buy a programme at the game then you get the original one that we printed back when we were supposed to play Harrogate the first time, complete with a printed sheet with this editorial. If you go home and have a look at the online version however, then you get (completely free of charge!) a special bumper edition with loads of photos from around the ground. Although lots of people really like to get a printed programme (me included), the online version is being read by more and more folk as the weeks go by - Saturday’s was read by over 140 people, which is pretty good going. I suspect we’ll surpass that number this week, as everyone will be wanting to see if we’ve included a full-page photo of them! Apologies if you got a shock seeing yourself in ‘print’, and I promise to buy a drink for the poor fella who inadvertently ended up on the cover - I hope he doesn’t mind. If I missed you out this time then give me a wave next time the camera gets pointed in your direction; or alternatively do what Lee Gaskell’s mum did and dive for cover! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A big thankyou to everyone who signed up for the Supporters Club on Saturday. It’s great to see so many new faces who are joining in the Rammy Boogie Bus. We’ve had a request to spend some of the funds on a drum, and have found our very own and very keen Little Drummer Boy, so it should be making its debut tonight. Apologies if it drives everyone mad, but it could be worse - I have a big bag of them bloody Vuvuzela things in the cupboard under the stairs, and as we all remember, there’s nowt spoils a world cup like 60,000 people tooting on those!
