TONY CUNNINGHAM AND THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium this afternoon for what promises to be an absolute cracker! We welcome our match officials to Ramsbottom, and our opponents who have ventured over the hill to be with us today. As this game was scheduled to take place at the end of last year, but was yet another victim of the wettest winter on record, it is the first time that the Rams have played Farsley this season. So a warm Lancashire welcome to our Yorkshire visitors. The chase for the play-offs is turning into a fascinating contest. Farsley are now just one point above ourselves, and the two games between the two clubs could well prove to be decisive. We return to the Throstles Nest in three weeks time, and already the Rams supporters have hired a coach to take a fair following over there. Along with those who will travel by car, we can expect good support for what is a much-anticipated fixture. Before then, of course, we have the little matter of a ninety minute contest here today! We go into the game with a positive frame of mind. Our thumping of Harrogate RA in the last game down here was emphatic, to say the least. Last Saturday’s contest at Church Lane was a nail-biter. Once again the support for the Rams was magnificent. Not only are we attracting large numbers of supporters to away games these days, but the atmosphere created is better than ever before. Flags and singing – wonderful! Credit to the lads for their performance at New Mills. In the early stages it looked like we were carrying on from the Harrogate performance. Then things began to go wrong. After all, it was New Mills we were playing, so I suppose we would never have expected anything else. The injury to Grant Shenton was a massive blow, especially considering that from that incident the Millers notched an undeserved equaliser. But we continued to take the game to the opposition, and had Grant Spencer’s penalty gone in, the 4-1 lead would have effectively ended the game. As it was, the game turned on it’s head, and Dominic’s debatable red card with quarter of an hour to go really did test the will of our defence, and the ability of our stand-in keeper, Bernard, who was superb. It’s great to get the monkey off the back when it comes to New Mills. They have been a good side over the years, but I believe their financial backer has pulled out this season, and their results prove how questionable it is to rely upon one person to prop up a club. Every club has it’s level within the game, and sometimes overambition can prove to be fatal. Ask today’s visitors. Farsley Celtic went on a fine run which catapulted them up to the Conference National. Whilst understandably taking the opportunity to compete at a level which had previously been well above them, the repercussions were such that the old club folded. Ambition is fine, but it needs to be realistic. The newly-formed club have done well since their reformation, but the current officials will no doubt be aware of the past and keep current ambitions within a realistic scale. They, like ourselves, though, will be desperate to secure one of those four play-off spots. I hope they manage it, as long as they finish one place below us! Enjoy your non-league football!

Good afternoon and welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium for this afternoon’s clash. We’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, management and supporters of Farsley, and hope they enjoy their trip over the Pennines. We have been looking forward to today’s game all week after saturday’s win against a New Mills side who’ve always seemed to get the better of us results-wise over the years. I’m pleased to say that we finally ended the unwanted run of never winning against them, and what a way to achieve that; a game that simply had it all. We got a first half hatrick from Gassy, a bad injury to Shents (that’s a massive blow to us all as he’s in my opinion the best keeper in the league), Bern stepping up and putting himself in the firing line in goal and I must say doing a great job, so hats off to him. It reaffirms just what our Rammy spirit is all about. then we got a missed penalty which could have put the game out of sight at 1-4, then we conceeded a penalty and went in at the break 2-3. Next, a man sent off, and to withstand the last 10-15 minutes like we did surely all contributes to a massive three points. When you look back at the record books it will simply say a 3-2 win and three points. In our eyes all of the above makes it much more than just three points, and to leave the field to the noise that our ever increasing following made was an unbelievable feeling. Thank you to each and every one of you who travelled over to support us. I said in my last notes that there would be a few more ups and downs but I didn’t expect so many in one 90 mins! Onto today, and we all know how important all of our remaining games are. Hopefully the couple of additions we’re hoping to sign before the game will have been completed and you will get to see them in a Rammy shirt this afternoon. All that’s left to say is please get behind the lads again today and hopefully we can the right result. Enjoy the game... Coyr

Ramsbottom United returned to winning ways in emphatic style as they completely dominated their opponents with a five star display. The side from north Yorkshire must be sick of the sight of the Rams. Having played the Lancashire side four times since the latter gained promotion, they have been on the receiving end of four defeats, having leaked 15 goals and scoring none in the process. Tuesday night was as emphatic a victory as was possible, with five different goal-scorers helping push the team back into contention for a play-off place. Despite their dominance, the Rams could quite easily have fallen behind early on, when the first chance of the game fell to Harrogate. Alex Metcalf was played through the middle, but with only Grant Shenton, in goal, to beat, he fired well wide of the target. Within a minute, however, the tone of the night had been set. The home side immediately pushed forward, and Lee Gaskell beat the offside trap to fire in a superb shot which was brilliantly pushed round by RA keeper Peter Crook. Crook however, turned from hero to villain as the corner came in. Danny Warrender was first to the ball, but Crook appeared to have his header within his grasp, but inexplicably fumbled it as it went over the line, to give the Rams a morale-boosting ninth minute lead. Crook, however, was in the right place to keep out a Billy Priestley header from a Gary Stopforth freekick, and a direct free-kick from Gaskell. Gaskell then headed wide from another free-kick as the home side began to dominate proceedings. Jordan Hulme’s persistence paid off as he wriggled past his defender on the by-line, but Chris Denham, returning after injury, was unable to hit the target. It was no surprise when the Rams doubled their lead on 35 minutes. A fine run from Stopforth

saw the industrious midfielder feed the on-rushing Phil Dean, and the latter fired home from just inside the box. Hulme hit the side netting, before a rare chance at the other end proved to be the final action of the first half. Nathan Cartman wriggled through only to see Shenton palm the ball away, and the follow-up also hit the side netting. Dean was thwarted by Crook as the second half began, before his cross found Hulme, but he was inches wide from 15 yards. In a desperate attempt to get back into the game, Metcalf’s 25 yard effort sailed inches wide of the post, but Harrogate attacks were rare as the Rams totally controlled the game. They were rewarded in the 62 minute when a neat flick on from Stopforth put Gaskell through on goal and he found his spot from 15 yards to end the game as a contest. A fine move involving Dean Gaskell and Dominic Smalley ended with a shot that sailed inches over the bar, before a fine through ball from Priestley sent Hulme scampering through. Fortunately for the visitors Crook was able to snuff out the danger, but he wasn’t so fortunate just sixty seconds later when an identical opportunity arrived. This time Hulme made no mistake as he fired the ball home for the Rams fourth on 73 minutes. Hulme fired another chance over before Priestley finished the scoring on 82 minutes. A fine cross from the left from Darren Green, who had an excellent game in midfield, landed perfectly for Priestley who volleyed home first time from 12 yards out. Hulme had a shot cleared off the line as the minutes ticked down, but the final whistle sounded on a perfect night for the home side. Another three points, and another convincing victory as the Rams continue to battle for that final play-off spot, a battle that is looking more intriguing as the weeks pass.

Ramsbottom United finally beat New Mills at the tenth attempt, but in keeping with tradition, they had to do it the hard way. The Millers had won all but two of the previous nine meetings between the two clubs, with just two draws being the reward for the Rams attempts over the years. However, after seemingly strolling through the early stages of this one, a bad injury and a sending off ensured that their fight to finally grasp three points off their opponents was never going to be easy. The visitors had the perfect start, when a through ball down the slope confused the defender and Lee Gaskell raced on to plant a firm shot past Peter Collinge in the home goal. That early boost seemed to spur the Rams on as they launched attack after attack with Dean, twice, and

Pilkington all going close to extending the lead. But on 14 minutes came the injury which saw the Rams having to re-shuffle. Grant Shenton made a fine close range save from the over-lapping Dan Hewitt, but in doing so, caught the ball below his body, and badly injured his left ankle. It proved to be a double blow for the Rams, for, after lengthy treatment to the keeper, from a throw-in that resulted, the ball was fed back into the middle of the area where the unmarked Dan Shaw fired home from 15 yards to level the scores. Shenton tried to carry on, but it was obvious he was in pain. His defenders did an admirable job of ensuring that he had nothing to do for the next 15 minutes, whilst the attackers helped the cause by firing in another two goals.

On 25 minutes Grant Spencer sent over a superb ball to Phil Dean on the left. Dean made his way to the by-line before putting over a cross for Gaskell to nod home by the far post. Five minutes later, the striker completed a 26-minute hat-trick with the goal of the game. Owen Roberts floated a diagonal 50 yard ball over the Millers defence into the path of Gaskell, who fired home an unstoppable volley from an acute angle, that flew in off the far post. 3-1 to the Rams, at which point any attempt to keep Shenton on the pitch was proving fruitless. On came joint-manager Bernard Morley to replace the custodian, and take his place between the sticks, as he had done on an odd occasion in the past. Then came the tale of two penalties, which in effect, totally transformed the game. On 37 minutes, Darren Green was adjudged to have been brought down in the area, and up stepped Spencer to dispatch what would probably have been a game-ending penalty. Alas, he struck the ball over the bar and the score remained at 3-1. Just before half-time another penalty was awarded, this time to the home side. Morley and Billy Priestley made a hash of collecting a loose ball in the area, and in so doing, a home forward went sprawling. James Hampson took the responsibility, and unlike Spencer, his effort found the back of the net. From a possible 4-1 advantage, the Rams went in for the break with a slim 3-2 lead. Gaskell was having a fine game. He almost added to his tally with an overhead kick that just cleared the bar, and early in the second half he twice went close to opening up a bigger gap between the sides. A header from a Dean cross was cleared by the post, before he spotted Collinge off his line, but his delicate lob again just cleared the bar. Spencer fed Green, but his goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner, then Roberts tantalising cross fell just past the far post. Green should have found the target from 15 yards but fired wide before the Rams were reduced to ten men. Dominic Smalley barged a Millers forward off the ball on the edge of the area, and the referee deemed him to be the last man and promptly showed the red card. That loss turned the game completely. Playing down the slope, the home side threw everything at the visitors, with free-kick after free-kick having to be dealt with by the defenders and make-shift keeper. Morley did all he was asked to do, including a superb close range stop from Mike Smith who volleyed goalwards from ten yards out. Morley dived to his right to push what looked like a certain equaliser for a corner. Having resisted all the late pressure, Gaskell could well have killed the game off in the final minutes when he chased the ball into the area. He drove his shot straight at Collinge though, but the whistle sounded a couple of minutes later much to the relief of the large band of Ramsbottom supporters who had made the journey to the Peak District. A hard-earned three points from a game that had everything. A hat-trick, two penalties, a sending-off and a nasty injury. In the end, despite the late rearguard action, the Rams took the points their overall play deserved, and they were all the sweeter having at last come at the expense of New Mills. The race for the play-offs shows no sign of abating.

He then moved onto Wakefield and Gainsborough Trinity before joining Ossett Town in 2005 and went onto enjoy a four-season spell at Ingfield before switching to Bradford Park Avenue in 2009. Robbie pledged his future to the club this summer and was appointed as the new captain by Neil Parsley. Matty Young – Centre Midfield Young returned to Farsley this summer after playing here for Farsley Celtic in the 2009-10 before the club’s liquidation. Lee Ellington Ellington is another player who returns to the club after originally playing for the club during the ill-fated 2009-10 campaign and finished top scorer for Farsley that season. After leaving Farsley at the end of that campaign, he moved to Harrogate Town for a season before linking up with Steve Kittrick at Conference North pro-motion chasers Guiseley. Unfortunately after just two months at the club, he was told by management duo Mark Atkins and Nick Buxton that he was no longer required but a compensation deal to end his contract could not be struck so he was forced to watch the rest of the season from the sidelines.

Farsley AFC were formed in June 2010 from the embers of Farsley Celtic F.C which entered Administration in June 2009 whilst in the Blue Square North and which failed to fulfil its fixtures eventually being expelled from that league early in 2010. The old Farsley club (the name Celtic being added later) initially competed in the Leeds Amateur leagues and played its first game at the current site in 1948. Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s Celtic established themselves in the Yorkshire Leagues, being crowned champions in 1959-60 and 1968-69, although failing to be promoted as a result of ground regulations. A First Round FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground in 1974 proved to be the highlight of the decade, and the 11,000 crowd that saw the Celts lose 2-0 to a Steve Coppell inspired Rovers is still the largest crowd in the club’s history. As the Yorkshire and Midland leagues merged in 1982, Farsley began in Division One North. By the mid 80’s the club was invited into the Northern Premier League. After a few largely uninspiring seasons, the new decade brought unparalleled success. In 2004-05 under the inspired management of Lee Sinnott, the team won the Unibond League Premier Division only to have points deducted as the result of Spennymoor Town going out of business and its results being expunged. The reduction in points resulted in the Celts securing only a play-off place, losing controversially on penalties against Workington in the final. Promotion was secured the following season after a playoff final victory against North Ferriby and in the following season, the club’s first in the Conference North, they reached the first round of the FA Cup losing in a replay to MK Dons as well as securing promotion to the Conference National following a memorable evening at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton Upon Trent, when Simeon Bambrook’s last minute penalty saw the Celts beat Hinkley United 4-3. A single season of Conference National football resulted in relegation to the Conference North. On-going financial difficulties saw the Administrators appointed in June 2009 with the club’s results expunged in March 2010 when the Administrator prohibited the club from fulfilling its fixtures. The re-formed club were placed in the NCEL Premier Division for their first season which turned out to be highly successful with a league and cup double recorded. Many of the former players remained loyal to the club and top spot was held for much of the season, with the title confirmed on the penultimate weekend of the season. The club also reached two cup finals, the NCEL Presidents Cup, in which Tadcaster won but the season ended on a positive note with the League Cup being lifted despite Farsley having to play the majority of the final with 10 men. The 2011/12 season was almost as successful, with a top five spot being secured ensuring qualification for the play-offs. Unfortunately, the semi-final opponents were Witton Albion who won 3-0 and deservedly booked a place in the final, going onto win promotion after defeating Curzon Ashton in the final. Last year’s league season didn’t quite go to plan with a disastrous run in the closing months, saw Neil Parsley’s side go without a win in the final eight games. Inconsistent form before this point had all but put an end to the club’s play-off chase and a 14th place finish was all that could be mustered. On a positive note, Farsley reached the quarter-finals of the Doodson Sports Cup. After beating Ossett Albion and Clitheroe, Farsley beat Premier Division opposition Whitby Town and Worksop Town before bowing out to Matlock Town in the final eight.

RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACS

Good afternoon one and all - hope all are well and the nerves have eased somewhat after the events of last Saturday. As a Rammy supporter who wasn't at the game, watching it via the Twitter feed was just as nervewracking as it was had I been at the game. The delight of seeing us 1-0 and 3-1 up in the first half-hour was overtaken by concern for Shents and then concern for the three points as we missed a penalty and then conceded one before half-time. And while being told that New Mills were not that great a side, they probably didn't need to be given that Bernard was in goal and anything could happen!! I remember the time before at Congleton in the final game of the NWCFL season that we came second when 'The Cat' was in net with Shents struggling to get to the game in time and, well, it was a joy to behold but probably not described as Bern's favourite position as a shot came in and he just watched it crash into the back of the goal!!! I haven't been that nervous watching the Twitter feed since 'that' Skelmersdale game last May. I was watching a rugby game, once again, but barely really paying much attention to the clash of Hampshire clubs Tottonians and Winchester, just continually checking the feed to see what was happening. With Southampton clinging onto a 3-2 lead at home to Norwich, having been comfortably 3-0 up with less than five minutes to go, lets just say that my phone was getting plenty of attention and the sheer elation when the final score information appeared was palpable. Of course, it wasn't just that ... it was NEW MILLS!!!!! Yes, we have finally beaten bloody New Mills! The bain of our lives for many a year in the NWCFL, we re-engaged our battles with them in the Evo-Stik when we followed them up to a year later but it took 11 games, featuring eight defeats and two draws previously and many a heartache to finally lay to rest that particular bogey. The match on 6th October 2012 at Church Lane, our first against them in the Evo-Stik and it is one that still sticks in the craw, even 18 months later. I was in Florida, in the Aventura Mall to the north of Miami. We absolutely hammered them! Everything that I read on our feed and on the New Mills feed was saying exactly that - it was only a matter of time before that blasted Millers duck was finally banished forever. I continued to walk around the shops, using the mall's wifi to keep across the news, waiting for that joyeous moment where the Rams could finally leave the High Peak with a victory. It didn't happen - not only did it not happen by a goal in the 88th minute snatched the win for the home side. Never before has the south-eastern peninsula of the United States of America heard such blasphemous expletives as it did that afternoon. Bears have never had sorer heads as mine that day. So my joy was unconfined on Saturday, as you can imagine!!! And now we come to this game with Farsley, a very tough game against a side that are holding one of the converted play-offs places ahead of us. So let's hope we can rekindle the spirit of Saturday and keep our own hopes firmly alive. C'MON YOU RAMS!!!!!!!

EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUB

What a game! Last week’s battle of New Mills had everything, and was one of the biggest nail-biters we’ve had for a very long time - let’s face it, when you’re 3-0 up by half-past three, games tend to lose their sparkle as a rule. But not this one! Our heart-felt best wishes must go to Grant Shenton, whose ankle looked to be in a fairly bad way. The latest news is that it’s a fractured tibia, so he’ll be out for a good while. Astonishingly he tried to battle on, but as you could see by the way he hobbled off on crutches, it was way beyond the point where adrenaline will get you through. ... and so, bring on Bernard can’t believe it’s a penalty when he’s clearly gone the Bernard! Flatter- for the ball! ingly bedecking in pink, The Mighty Bernard “The Cat” Morley took to the field, with all our hopes pinned on him, and he didn’t let us down! Admittedly there were a few jitters when he rugby tackled the striker to the floor for a penalty, much like poor Tommy Toth did last week, though perhaps with a bit more vigour. However, as the clock ticked down and New Mills piled on the pressure, he made a couple of fantastic saves, particularly the punch at full stretch, and when the ball bounced awkwardly just in front of him with a striker bearing down. It’s probably three years since we last saw Bernard in nets, and the mists of time have thankfully started to erase the memories of that day, but New Mills, and the way that every Rammy player rallied to the cause, will live long in the memory. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You don’t need me to tell you what a humdinging six-pointer tonight’s match is. We all know what’s at stake over the next couple of weeks, and our having to play Farsley home and away, as well as Warrington and Bamber Bridge, means that it’s squeaky-bum time right through to the end of the season. Yes, these games are six-pointers, but to be honest, I’d settle for our run-in any day. Farsley’s last few games reads like a who’s who at the top of the Northern Premier League, and if they manage to bag a play-off spot at the end of that lot then they thoroughly deserve to be there. So, let battle commence, and let’s hope that the rumoured new signing from Radcliffe Borough makes an appearance tonight as, with the loss of Chris Denham and Grant Shenton to injury as well as the pending suspension of Dom Smalley, we’re definitely going to need all hands to the pump! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just one last thing...
