First of all I’d like to say a big welcome to our friends from Stourbridge. It doesn’t feel like five minutes ago that the teams last met - given the print deadline for this programme, it’s little more! I’d also like to thank today’s officials as they have a thankless job making sure football matches take place up and down the country. We have a couple more new signings that you may have seen appearing at Stourbridge (if you made the long trip) or on the teamsheet (if you didn’t). First of all, the return to the fold of another Rammy favourite in the shape of defender Mark Ayres. We are good pals and have spoken a lot throughout the season. When I asked if he was available to help us out as required he said that he would do, but the situation has changed for him and he’s now agreed to join us for the rest of the season, which we’re all really pleased about. He gives us some real strength at the back as well as a bit of leadership. Vinny Mukendi played against us earlier in the season when we lost 3-2 to Nantwich Town. He’s a hugely talented young striker with a fantastic pedigree, and I was delighted when he said that, after our conversation, he’d decided to join us. He scored some 20-or-so minutes into his debut on Tuesday and went very close later on in the game. He’s a technically gifted player as well as having the kind of presence I’d like to see up front, and so an all-round great signing.

I’ve been watching the concern that supporters have been voicing on the forum over the last week or so and I’d like to remind everyone that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Nerves have perhaps calmed just a little now that we finally have three points on the board, but some patience will still be required. e game at Stourbridge saw us starting to gel as a team, which has been missing so far, and we were far more organised and more of an attacking threat. We created a lot more goal-scoring opportunities than we’ve seen of late, and that’s really important for me. ere will need to be some chopping and changing of the lineup still, particularly as we have such a huge backlog of games, so it could be a while until we have a solid, settled starting team. ere has been some (deserved) criticism of our disciplinary record, after yet another sending off at Skelmersdale, and I won’t say any more than “e situation has been addressed and it will improve.” It is very strange to be playing the same opposition in such a short period of time, but having won the three points at their ground, after a long journey, we surely have a psychological edge going into this afternoon’s game. Let’s hope that edge pays off in another three points for the Rams today. I hope that everyone enjoys this afternoon’s match and that our visitors’ journey home will be a pleasant, if disappointed one.

tony cunningham and the wonderful world of non-league football Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium. A special welcome to today’s match officials, and of course, our visitors from Stourbridge for what is a quick turnaround from the game down in the west Midlands on Tuesday night.e result down there gave everyone a boost, and we naturally hope to now push on, although I’ve no doubt today’s visitors will be looking to gain revenge this afternoon. Could be a cracker! FRUSTRATING In my 20 years of supporting the Rams, I can’t remember a worse time for postponements. Just as we thought the wintry weather had abated, along came the aftermath of the Ilkeston game, which left the pitch in a right old state. ere were a few eyebrows raised when we had a pitch inspection three days later, and the referee declared the surface unplayable. e weather had not been too bad, but when I ventured along to take a look, the pitch was like a ploughed farmer’s field. at was despite all the work that had gone on during the Sunday and Monday. To have played the game would have rendered it farcical, and goodness knows what further damage would have been caused. Frustration is not the word. As usual,

0 24

everything was in place for the game to go ahead, and such postponements, as well as causing extra work all round, also have financial implications, with programmes and refreshments, and the inevitable lower attendances when the games are eventually played. We have now to face an incredible runin as we attempt to complete all our fixtures before the end of April. At least two of the weeks ahead will see us playing three games within seven days (or four in eight if you put the two Saturdays in the equation). is is one heck of an ask, especially considering everything that has happened here over the last few weeks. e team has been, and continues to be, reshaped, with players coming and going through the revolving door that is the HWRS dressing room. e lack of consistency brings it’s own problems, and it’s fair to say that we are all looking forward to a rest come May when we can hopefully begin putting everything back on an even keel. e task in hand is quite simple. Having reached these dizzy heights in such a short space of time, it would be cruel to throw it away after just one season. To stay at Evo-Stik Premier level has to be the target and should we ultimately be successful, then I will regard that as important as the victory at Bamber Bridge almost twelve months ago.

the pitch condition two days after the Ilkeston match

To say that this season has been one of the most traumatic in the club’s history is probably an under-statement! WELL DONE I have to say a massive well done to our old boy Chris Wilcock on his achievements at Glossop North End. To take the Surrey Street club to the semi-final of the FA Vase has been a superb achievement and only a long trip to Cornwall stands in the way of the club making a return visit to Wembley following their defeat there in 2009. Hopefully they can make it and return home this time with the trophy.

ey are also in contention for the one promotion place from the NWCFL, but, like ourselves, they have one massive run-in. Although in theory they could race past Runcorn Linnets, I fear that such a tight run of games will probably hand the title to the Cheshire club. Which begs the question….FA Vase success or promotion? If I’m honest, I would go with the latter every time. Enjoy your non-league football!

It would take a level of optimism last exhibited by king Canute when trying to turn back the waves to detect any sign of an upturn in fortunes for the Rams after another dispiriting defeat. At least though there are indications that the need to find changes of approach is understood with the Rams adopting a 3-5 2 line up with Osebi Abadaki pushed into the middle in support of Lee Gaskell who for the last several matches as been floating around up front as lonely as a Wordsworthian cloud. And for 45 minutes it looked as if it might just work at least to the extent of perhaps grabbing a point. e Rams were driven on by an energetic Phil Edghill and Chris Baguley who rushed and chased around the field all afternoon but frankly in possession they were devoid of composure and precision in use of the ball. However apart from a moment of slackness when Grant Shenton had to save smartly at close range after Kyle Harrop had all too easily been brushed of the ball the Rams kept Skemersdale to a succession of long range speculative shots and did not seem to be too discomforted when Abadaki was sent off after 40 minutes apparently for a retaliation that escaped the eyes of all but the officials. Indeed they could easily have gone into the break ahead if Jamie Rother had been able to muster a bit more direction and force on his shot after cleverly breaking into the box. at though was pretty much the high water mark for the Rams . 5 minutes into the second half if Danny Mitcheley looked susceptible to a charge of offside receiving the ball in the area his partner was absolutely bang to rights when pouncing on his deflected shot with nobody between him and the goal. From that point hope and expectation evaporated like early morning dew in the Sahara. Barely two minutes later the Rams defence parted as if the Red Sea before Moses and this time it was Mitchley turn to score with a firm shot past Shenton. And it was the centre forward again who made it 3-0 on the hour with a firm header unimpeded by any sense of being marked. After that Tom Brookes caved out a couple of chances by dint of playing more on the shoulder of the last defender but without really testing the Skem goalkeeper and the game petered out to aimless attacks by the home team and futile resistance by the Rams. So now it is on to mid table Stourbridge on Tuesday with the Rams desperately seeking that slice of luck that might kick start a revival but also more passion belief and togetherness.

stourbridge “can we play you twice a week...” Stourbridge were founded in 1876 and were originally known as Stourbridge Standard, but they reverted to their current name in 1887, their nickname ‘e Glassboys’ came from the towns connection with the Cut Glass industry. e club started life in the Birmingham & District League, with success arriving in 1924 when they clinched their first League championship. After a spell in the Birmingham Combination, Stourbridge returned to the Birmingham & District League, gaining more success when they lifted both the Worcestershire and Birmingham Senior Cups in 1968. e Glassboys were elected to the Southern League in 1971 and the step-up in class did not seem to affect them as they won the Division One (North) title in the 1973/74 season. is year also saw an excellent run in the Welsh Cup, where Stourbridge beat both Swansea and Wrexham away, before eventually losing to Cardiff City over two legs in the final. Unfortunately Stourbridge could not follow up this success over the coming years and after four seasons in the Premier Division they soon found themselves back in the Midland Division of the Southern League. eir form in the Midland Division was mediocre and in 1988 they finished the season in the relegation spots, but fortune was to shine on Stourbridge as they were reelected back into the League. is seemed to spur the club on as 1991 saw the Glassboys clinch the Midland Division championship, but their joy was short lived as Southern

0 24

League officials refused promotion back to the Premier Division due to Stourbridge’s home ground being shared with the Cricket Club. e 1990’s saw a number of changes in personnel at Stourbridge, with managers coming and going and also a new owner of the club. Although these changes brought in a new influx of players, success was not to follow and in May 2000, Stourbridge’s twenty-nine year stay in the Southern League was ended, as defeat to Hinckley United in the last game of the season saw them relegated. e Glassboys started life back in the Midland Alliance with optimism and they won the championship in 2003, with a gigantic hall of 101 points, but promotion back to the Southern League was denied due to issues with the ground grading regulations at that time. During the summer a new management duo of John Ford and Gary Hackett were brought in as Stourbridge set about another attempt to gain promotion. e following seasons saw a number of midtable finishes for the club and in May 2005 Gary Hackett took sole charge of the team. Off the field Stoubridge were hard at work to ensure that the War Memorial Athletic Ground met the new ground grading requirements. e hard work paid off, as come the end of the season they finished runners-up and after a two week wait promotion was confirmed and Stourbridge returned to the Southern League.

action from Tuesday night

e Glassboys adapted to life at a higher level extremely quickly and they were promoted to the Southern Premier Division two years later, via the Play-Offs after beating Leamington away from home. Stourbridge seemed to acclimatise well, especially considering they had not played at this level for twenty-four years. e 2009/10 season saw Gary Hackett make history, when he guided the club into the First Round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. After disposing of Hucknall Town and Buxton in the previous rounds, Stourbridge were eventually knocked out by Football League Club Walsall at a packed out War Memorial Athletic Ground, narrowly losing one nil. Two years later they yet again reached the FA Cup First Round, after drawing three all away at Football league Plymouth Argyle, the replay saw e Glassboys ran out two nil winners in front of the ESPN cameras.

e Second Round saw League One Stevenage visit Stourbridge, but this time there was to be no upset as the League side claimed victory in a three nil win. Last season Stourbridge continued their steady improvement and reached the palyOffs of the Southern Premier Division, losing to League runners-up Chesham United in the Semi-Finals. e close season saw a restructure, meaning e Glassboy’s would start the 2014/15 season in the Northern Premier League. Manager Gary Hackett is now in his twelfth successive season in charge of Stourbridge and he has managed to keep together most of his squad that finished the previous season in the Southern Premier Division so strongly. Yet again they have adapted to new surroundings with ease and so far sit in a very comfortable mid-table position.

Leon Broadhurst (Defender/ Midfielder) Aged 30 Previous Clubs; Bromsgrove Rovers, Fairfield Villa & Leamington. is versatile player is now in his third spell with Stourbridge and had a testimonial season last year, making his 500th appearance in January 2014. Broadhurst has spent most of his time at Stourbridge playing midfield, but he is equally at home marshalling the defence. e club stalwart has notched over 100 goals for the Glassboys, and has been voted Players Player of the Season for the past two seasons.

Kayleden Brown (Striker) Aged 22 Previous Clubs; West Bromwich Albion, Keflavik, Tranmere Rovers, Dagenham & Redbridge, Port Vale & Market Drayton Town. Brown is a strong 6ft 2in striker who joined the club at the beginning of last season. He started his career in the Football League, but his professional career was ended by a serious knee injury. Now back fully fit he is eager to make a name for himself in non-league circles, his athleticism will test any defence in the Northern Premier League.

meet the away fans jack nethercott fills us in on ‘stour’ What's the mood like in the camp at the moment? I think the mood would be frustration! We've not played anywhere near as well as we have done in past seasons, but at the same time things out of our control such as injuries to key players have meant it's been a very stop-start season for us. So things aren’t going to plan? In one word: no! For the last two seasons in the Southern League we've made the play off places and given teams some thumpings along the way. is year it’s not gone at all like that. I don't think it's been a case of struggling to adapt as such, we just haven't got any momentum. Can you talk us through the last couple of results please. We were given a footballing lesson by all accounts by Blyth at home. We never really got out of second gear. It’s been very much the same for a while now. e one thing you can't knock is the effort the players are giving, however there isn't the swagger we normally have. We also suffered a pretty poor defeat the Tuesday before away at Witton losing 2-1. For you who are the players to watch at the moment, and why? e main two that would stand out for

0 24

centre

me would be our captain Leon Broadhurst (he'll be number 8) and Luke Benbow (Number 9). Leon has been at the club now for over ten years. He's Stour through and through and has been our most consistent performer this season. Luke is without a doubt a match winner. He's really struggled with injuries and subsequent form this season, but eight goals in three and half matches in the Autumn shows that he’s got a lot of talent, and a bright future. How long have you been a supporter? I’m seventeen, but my first game was a while back now - I can't remember the exact date, I'd say 9/10 years I've been following Stour. What are your most memorable times with the club, and what sticks out for you this season? Everyone would say the cup runs that have seen us play Walsall, Plymouth and Stevenage twice! However I'm going to go for two games against one of our biggest rivals Leamington. e first, three years ago saw us trailing 3-2 and down to ten men going into the last five minutes. A wonderful lob won it in stoppage time, 43. e second, the year later when we absolutely trounced them 5-1 at home. We finished second that year behind

How would you change the club if you won the lottery? Tricky one! Most would say get rid of the cricket club (as any of you who travel down Tuesday will understand)-but I've actually got links to the club too! So I'd say

centre

'Leamo' however in my opinion we were the best team in the league. is season, despite some positives the most 'memorable' was for the wrong reasons, one of our brightest talents Ben Billingham suffered an horrendous injury away at Matlock and looking right over it from the side it wasn't a pretty sight. We ended up losing 4-1 and having eight men that day. Memorable to say the least!

Friendly! Everywhere we go we get very high compliments! What are your hopes for the rest of the season? To avoid getting into a relegation fight, as we're not safe just yet. Blood some youngsters and beat Halesowen in the MASSIVE derby.

rammy in exile sky sports statto richard isaacs Good afternoon everyone and I hope everyone is keeping well. First of all, I just have to say just how much I enjoyed the game on Tuesday night. Apologies to our visitors from Stourbridge today (and welcome to our little town, by the way) but I had an absolute ball in the Black Country watching my first game of the 'new era' and, of course, their first league success in charge. Having read the reports and taken in the comments of others, I travelled the 140 miles up the A34, M40 and M5 with my dad with a little trepidation as to what I might see. And being a goal down after two minutes... well, need I say any more! But, the fight returned to the blue shirts and two well taken goals sent us drunk in exaultion as we went into half time 2-1 up, a lead that we managed to maintain right through the second half, not without its moments of concern, panic and deep breaths. But you could feel the delight at the final whistle as the millstone from around our collective necks was removed. Of course, the challenge is not over and we still have a monster fixture list to contend with but that victory was vital. In fact, it was more than vital - it was crucial, if just to lift the spirits around the place. I am quite hoarse this morning though! One of the great joys of

0 24

following the Rams and coming to watch the games is that you can shout yourself hoarse and feel you are making a difference and I do apologise to my fellow Rammy followers if my shouting was a little extra loud on Tuesday night. As you can probably tell, I did quite enjoy myself and was grinning quite a bit on the way back south afterwards. Can I stay away? No, not for much longer - I am heading back up once the Cricket World Cup is completed so I will be in evidence for the Curzon Ashton away game on 30 March and then for the next four games after that - Trafford (H), FC United (H), Ashton United (A) and the cup semifinal against Farsley. en I will probably head for home and maybe try and get back for the dénouement of the season. Ah yes, the Cricket World Cup. A painful experience if you are an England supporter but I did warn you in this very column not so very long ago, although I do think that they would at least get to the quarter-finals before being thrashed and humiliated there. However, we were saved that ignominy and proceeded to lose to the mighty

into the knock-out stages starting on Wednesday morning. Fear not, the county and club cricket season starts very soon - just a month or so away now. And I have finalised my Sky cricket schedule starting with a trip to Dublin in early May for their game against England. Whoa, that should be fun! Would be good to go back to Dublin again - maybe about 10 stone lighter than my original visit there in 2011 where my troubles all started after ending up in hospital there. Anyway, that will probably do for now I think. I have some prep to do for the next few games coming up and also heading out to a rugby game - yet again - tonight up in Newbury. Football, cricket, rugby, the occasional game of pool as well ... my sport never ends. ank you to all my fellow Rammyites for joining me in my cheering and chanting. You know it makes a difference to the lads and I liked the way they all came and applauded us on Tuesday night. We are right behind you, lads. You have been dealt a pretty crappy hand but you are playing it well ... bring on Stourbridge once again today and then onwards to the rest of the campaign. ere will be speed bumps along the road but lets hope its all clear driving all the way to the end of the season - AND ... some silverware at the end of it. How sweet would that be, everyone? Come on you Rams.

Bangladesh sparing us two weeks worth of anticipation! Good grief ... What next for England? Who knows wholesale changes? Coach out? Players gone? Or just a hope that we might actually play something like the one-day international cricket that the rest of the world are playing .... SMASH IT! Rather than be like Ian Bell and be satisfied with 60-odd off 80-odd balls and think that is the best way. Anyway, I have just about had enough of the tournament now but it should get much more interesting as we head

from the darkside darren comer reports on the latest rammy ultras adventures Whisper it quietly but…RAMMY ARE BACK… RAMMY ARE BACK! Well, it’s been a long time coming (November 22nd to be precise) but the new look Rammy United have finally got their first league win of 2015 on a cathartic evening in the Black Country. I’m not sure how optimistic most people were before this game but, I’m sure everyone who was there will cherish the memories for a long time to come. I had missed the previous Saturday’s trip to Skelmersdale as I was holidaying up in e Lake District with Mrs Darkside and was kept up to date with the ever increasing bad news from our very own Carlsberg. Me and Mrs Darkside had gone along to see the West Lancashire League fixture between Ambleside United and Dalton (two Cumbrian teams!) and as news came through of, firstly, Osebi’s red card and then the three early second half goals we conceded, it left us in an increased state of despair about our team. When will we win again? Could we be relegated? Are the good times finally over for Rammy United?

Never mind that kind of nonsense talk and bring on Stourbridge! Stourbridge is not actually that far as the crow flies (however this means the crow does not have to navigate the M62 and M6 at rush hour on a Tuesday afternoon) and this saw the Rammy Rocket leaving e Riverside Stadium at 3.45 on a sunny, Spring afternoon. It was a shame that some of usual Mutton Army could not join due to work or family commitments but we did manage quite a healthy turn out. I was joined by e Carlsberg Clan, minus Ethan (school night) Andy and Hilary, Sir Paul of Cropper, Mike ‘Frostys Dad’ Frost, Andy ‘Mr Nice Guy’ Edmundson, Chairman Harry and Young Sophie. After a couple of quick stops, in Prestwich and Worsley, to pick up the Manchester based players of which we seem to be accumulating quite a few, we were soon making slow progress down the M62 (what is it with all these 50mph zones that keep appearing everywhere I go in this damn country?) Andy Massey seems to be turning into our resident Marco Polo on the away days and was soon up at the front informing the driver that there were delays around Cannock, which saw us taking a detour through the Cheshire countryside. is was my cue to crack open a Carlsberg (the beer variety, not the Ste Heard variety) and tuck into my pasty while enjoying the scenery.

new signing and goalscorer, the huge Vinny Mukendi alongside co-goalscorer Jamie Rother

Later in the journey we were joined by Danny Jones who came down for a chat with us mere mortals sat up the front. It is now a regular thing that one of the management team, Robbo, Edgy or Danny will come and have a chat with the travelling supporters about what they have been working on and what they are planning for the future. is is something we all appreciate and something the management team should be commended for, especially as they are open to interrogation from Andy ‘Question Time’ Massey. After crawling through the teatime Birmingham traffic we eventually landed in Stourbridge at 7.00, leaving us enough time for a couple of pints with the very friendly locals, with many of them not too optimistic about their chances that night after a run of rather Rammy-Esque defeats. Not so much a battle of the Goliaths then, more a clash of the Davids.

e ground itself was a quite unique, and pleasant, experience, in that one side of it doubled up as Stourbridge Cricket Club (some of us of a certain vintage will remember similar set ups at Northampton and Sheffield United) Overall, it was a very traditional English football ground, and when compared to the new generic, construct-a- stadiums higher up the league, I know which one I’d rather watch my football in. We had been joined by other Rammy supporters who had made their own way to the ground, including the Hampshire Branch of e Ultras, Richard e Voice and Statto Vic. We also had formation of the Worcester Branch when friends of e Carlsberg Clan arrived, it would seem the lure of the Rams is spreading by the week, and long may it continue. e game kicked off, and surprise, surprise, Stourbridge took the lead after two minutes.

from the darkside darren comer reports on the latest rammy ultras adventures Here we go again then, another painful ninety minutes ahead of us and a longer, even more painful journey home. Not tonight though, the lads did not let their heads go down and started to play with some real purpose, getting the ball wide to Osebi and Dermot who were trying to feed the debut making Big Vinny Mukendi up front. is paid off on 23 minutes when Vinny coolly placed the ball past the Stourbridge keeper, and celebrated even more coolly (it made Mario Ballotellis nonchalant celebrations look like he’s dancing the jitterbug)

0 24

Excitedly I started texting the folks back home (England 1970 World Cup squad reference there for those retro football and pop culture afficionados out there) but, before I had chance to finish sending the good news home, something wonderful happened. Jamie Rother fired home to put e Rams 2-1 up and spark off a small, but ecstatic celebration from the Ultras behind the goal. ere seems to be a growing confidence in this team and a cohesion that had been missing in previous weeks, and this feeling “with his little vuvuzela in his hand”, early-doors and anticipating another crushing defeat

it’s a long way to Tipperary, which we believe is somewhere near Stourbridge!

was shared by those of us who had travelled down. ere was a conspiracy theory doing the rounds on the terrace, that Andy Worsick was the catalyst for the turnaround in fortune as he had turned up when we already a goal behind. We suddenly started to believe we really could do this and come home armed only with fond memories and more importantly, all three points. As you would expect, with the home team chasing the game, the second half saw Rammy more on the defensive but, despite this, they never really looked under too much pressure and when they were, there were usually two or three of our lads around to snuff out any threat. In fact, the best chance of the half fell to Vinny with a one on one with their goalkeeper, only to shoot straight into his arms. e final ten minutes, which felt a long

longer, were tense and had Hilary comparing it to the end of the Bamber Bridge Play-Off Final last season, which we all were in agreement with. As it got closer to the final whistle, the noise from the Rammy Ultras began to get even louder as we urged the referee to blow his whistle. After five added minutes the referee granted us our wish and the celebrations really began on, and off, the pitch aided by Carlsberg’s horn (ooh, err Missus) and Andy’s vuvuzela. is was one of those evenings that we watch football for. It really was a special moment to finally get that first league win under the new regime, and to share that moment with the Rammy family. At long last, it would seem we are getting our football club back and moving into an exciting new era, rather than looking back in anger to the past.

grant shenton shouting from between the sticks Vinny Mukendi looks like an excellent signing, and scored the opener within 25 minutes of his Rammy debut. How did he fit in with the lads? e big man fitted in really well and put in a great performance on his first game in a Rammy shirt. A goal on his debut too! e Rammy Faithful are also over the moon that Mark Ayres is back in the fold we were all surprised and disappointed when Johnno let him go.He was always one of those players to wear his heart on his sleeve, so we reckon he'll fit in well with the Robbo mentality. Would you agree? I was asking about Ayres's availability as I know him very we'll and know what he's about. I think he is the perfect face to bring in given the situation we are in at the minute. e natives have been getting a bit restless on the forum, with the three points eluding us for so long. You must all be really chuffed to chalk up the first league win. We needed those three points and it was going to take a gritty performance to get them. We are very happy with thoe three points and are going to work hard to get more points on the board.

How would you describe the game at Stourbridge, and how does it compare with the last few? Was it a case of 'parking the bus' second half? I just think everyone did their jobs which I think some lads might not have been doing in previous games. We all worked together and got a good win against a good side after a long journey. I don't think we parked the bus no, we were under pressure which was obvious. We were away from home on a big pitch and they were always going to chase an equaliser but I think we still tried to play when we could, which is what the management team are telling us to do. I've never known the situation of playing a team twice in a week. How will it affect the game plan having seen them in action just four days earlier? All I can think really is we know what that journey was like and we half know what to expect from them so we will see come kick off. What was the journey like on the bus from Stourbridge? Will everyone be knackered all week? Not a great journey as the M6 was closed. Some lads will deal with it better than others - I have 4 week old baby to deal with when I get in and work in morning so not ideal but that's life in the Evostik.

A long way to go from here, but fingers crossed that it'll be onwards and upwards. Well like I said few weeks back, we can only approach the next game with the same mentality as the last. Saying that, coming off the back of a win is always a good place to be. Any 'official' news on Lee Pugh and his supposed departure from Rammy? I spoke to Lee after the game at Skem and he said to me he wasn't enjoying his football. He spoke to the gaffer and did everything he should have in a professional way. If you’re not enjoying playing then it's hard to get up for long trips away. I'm good mates with Lee and will be keeping In touch and I wish him the best of luck. Like us, you must be wondering just what the hell has happened the last few months, and we all know that you could have your pick of other clubs, so I'd just like to say how much everyone appreciates the way you've stuck with us. I love playing for this club and its fans. Nearly my entire semi-pro career has been at this club and it means a lot to me. I hurt as much as all the fans and it has all hit me deep, I won't lie. But I'm a strong character and we have games to do something good in this league. Enjoy today's game everyone and COYR!

supporters club on the terraces of rammy If you ask me (and I know you won’t, so I’ll say it anyway), then what we’ve been missing from this squad for a good long while is someone who can out-jump the big lads. Add into that mix someone with stacks of Robbo-esque Rammy Passion and you have our new (re-)signing Mark Ayres. If you’re a recent convert to the Rammy cause then you may not have seen Ayresy other than when he occasionally hung round the cricket club now and again when he didn’t have a game on, but he’s a belting player and a real Rammy Lad. Johnno and Bernard played him predominantly at left-back between Lee Pugh’s departure and Owen Roberts’ arrival, but where he really shone was as a central defender, a position that, when he eventually and decisively made it his own, was denied him as he got inexplicably dropped. Well, he’s back - and for me that’s amongst the best news of the week. I say ‘amongst’, because there’s a whole load of other great news, not least the return to the lineup of Donal McDermott after a couple of weeks away with injury. is lad is a really class act with a top pedigree and I for one was really pleased to see his name on Tuesday’s teamsheet.

And then there’s the addition of Vinny Mukendi just in time for the game at Stourbridge on Tuesday (and to score a goal within a half-hour of starting his debut). By all accounts Vinny is a strong and statuesque Striker who, just like Mark Ayres, is capable of out-jumping and outmuscling the big lads at the back and, as I’ve already said, that’s what we’ve been missing for a good long while! At last we’re starting to see some height and strength wearing the Rammy shirt. If, into the mix, we can continue to see the improvement in match fitness and distribution as well as the Robbo-type passion and fight, then we’re starting to see the seeds of a decent side poke their little green shoots above the muddy Riverside pitch. ere definitely is still a very long way to go to get a coherent team which is capable of beating some of the excellent opposition that we encounter in this league, but it’s crucial to remember that Johnno and Bernard took five years to assemble the squad we have lost en masse to Salford City. is is an extremely high standard of football we are competing at above that of Darlington and Warrington, and on a par with rising giants such as FC United, who wrongly assumed ten years ago that they’d never play us again! And so the appeal goes out once more to the nay-sayers on the forum talking of elephants in rooms... patience please!
