Welcome
Celebrate Rugby in the birthplace of the game
4
Rugby in the heart of England is the proud birthplace of a global game. The game may have changed since William Webb Ellis created history, but rugby’s heart and origins remain firmly in the town.
The birth of the game in the town is something we carry with huge pride. While this year’s Rugby World Cup takes place on the other side of the world, we’ll still be celebrating in Rugby and our Celebrate Rugby programme is an eclectic mix of entertainment for all – embracing the spirit of the game and Japan as hosts.
Fans from around the world flock to the town each year to see the statue of William Webb Ellis and the hallowed grounds of Rugby School where he first took up the ball in 1823. The 2016 opening of the World Rugby Hall of Fame in the town makes this pilgrimage all the more captivating. It is here that world greats of the game come annually to be inducted into its illustrious walls, and their stories documented to inspire young and old, players and fans alike.
This programme is a guide to our celebrations but also the town which carries so much of the game’s history. We invite you to explore events and spend time discovering our venues, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants and welcome you to join us in Celebrating Rugby in our beautiful town.
5
There’s also the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum, the Pathway of Fame and the town and school’s wider association with a growing sport – the Gilbert ball, the rugby cap and uniform and ‘Britain’s Best Pub to Watch Rugby’ to name a few. We are Rugby.
Cllr Jill Simpson-Vince Portfolio holder for Growth & Investment, Rugby Borough Council
This is the first time that the world’s third largest sports event will be hosted in Asia and, despite the distance, Rugby will be celebrating. Through town dressing, film, music and cultural events, Rugby will be revelling in the game’s birth and development as a thriving sport and honouring Japan as a worthy host of this great, global game.

As we celebrate the Rugby World Cup, we want you to too! We’ve decorated the town and want to involve our visitors through some fun competitions. about the competitions and prizes can be found on our website www.therugbytown. co.uk/celebraterugby. All competitions open on 20 September 2019. As you walk around the town it’s hard to miss our rugby balls. First commissioned for the Rugby World Cup 2015, working with a local arts collective and the wider community, these balls celebrate the game, the town and our people. There are four at the moment but our new Japanese inspired rugby ball takes pride of place in the town in time for Japan 2019 kick off.We are not going to tell you where it will be now, but when you discover it you will love it. Share your selfies with our new Japanese ball using #CelebrateRugby for a chance to win £30 in Rugby Town vouchers.

The Gain Line
Every day running on loop Rugby Art Gallery & Museum The Gain Line is a film installation by awardwinning contemporary artist Ravi Deepres. The 20 minute film was launched during the 2015 Rugby World Cup and explores the game of rugby from a historical, physiological, social and cultural perspective, putting the viewer in the mindset of the player. Taking inspiration from the gain line, the hypothetical line on the rugby field which teams endeavour to cross to gain territory, the artwork
www.therugbytown.co.uk/celebraterugby
focuses on three pivotal parts of the game - the scrum, the line-out and the penalty kick. During the project, Deepres filmed the England team in action at Twickenham in the Six Nations Tournament, filmed a Rugby Lions training session and match, and recording Rugby School boys playing a game on The Close. The Gain Line was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and Rugby Art Gallery and Museum in partnership with Phoenix, Leicester and ICIA, University of Bath and supported by Arts Council England. After the Final Whistle: the first Rugby World Cup 1919: A talk by author Stephen Cooper Saturday 5 October World Rugby Hall of Fame 19:00 Stephen Cooper will be speaking about his book ‘After the Final Whistle: The First Rugby World Cup & The First World War’. His talk will take place within the unique atmosphere of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. In 1919, a grateful Mother Country hosted a rugby tournament which would travel throughout the land: sevens teams at eight venues, playing 17 matches to declare a first ‘world champion’, winner of the King’s Cup, presented by George V at Twickenham Stadium. Never before had teams from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Britain and France been assembled in one place.
www.therugbytown.co.uk/celebraterugby
Rugby held the first ever ‘World Cup’; football would not play its own version, in a single city, until 1930. Award-winning author Stephen Cooper was born in Birmingham, England. His grandfather fought at the Somme, but refused to tell the tale and so inspired a lifelong fascination for the Great War. Stephen has also played and coached rugby for longer than he can remember. His first book ‘The Final Whistle’ won Rugby Book of the Year in the 2013 Times British Sports Book Awards. Cost: £10. World Rugby Hall of Fame Annual Pass holders £3.50 . Wise Children Thursday 10 October 19:30 – 22:00 Macready Theatre
Wes Anderson’s 2018 acclaimed stop-motionanimated science-fiction adventure film set in a dystopian near-future Japan. As a nasty and extremely virulent canine flu ravages the technologically-advanced metropolis of Megasaki from end to end, the unscrupulous and corrupt mayor, Kobayashi, decrees that all dogs be banished to Trash Island--a vast offshore wasteland of refuse. To track down his beloved four-legged companion, Spots, Kobayashi’s courageous twelve-year-old orphaned nephew, Atari, summons up the courage to set off alone on a dangerous rescue mission; however, to reunite with his best friend, the boy will need the precious help of a marauding pack of five abandoned alpha dogs. But, who may know the whereabouts of Spots, the Isle of Dogs’ hapless prisoner zero?
Multi-award-winning director Emma Rice brings her unique, exuberantly impish vision to Angela Carter’s great last novel in this brand-new theatre production. Rugby School – the birthplace of the game Rugby School, while first and foremost an educational establishment, has the ultimate privilege of also owning The Close, the very ground where William Webb Ellis, playing a game of football, decided to hang on to the ball and run. A plaque proudly proclaims this iconic moment in history reading: ‘This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis, who, with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his

time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus initiating the distinctive feature of the rugby game – AD 1823.’ And there is still something most magical about this piece of ground for all who live, study and work here, and for those visitors who regularly travel hundreds and thousands of miles to experience it for themselves. Students at Rugby School today are part of this continuing story. They train and play on the field

When the World Cup gets into full swing, the town of Rugby can feel like the centre of the universe, and during that time, for many of us, Rugby Football will be the most important thing in the world.

The Webb Ellis Legacy
World Rugby opens its Hall of Fame
Until Webb Ellis’s definitive act in 1823, the game of football had included handling the ball but no one had been permitted to hold it and run towards the opposite goal. Progress forward was by kicking, hacking and what today might be described as an enormous rolling maul involving up to 60 players. In 1820 the game was played a little like soccer but players were allowed to catch the ball and then kick it out of their hands. There were no limits to the number of players on each side, evident when Queen Adelaide visited the school to see the School House team of 75 boys play against ‘the rest’, a team of 225!

Pigs Bladders William Gilbert, a local bootmaker, took up ball-making to supply the school. In 1842, he established the first rugby football workshop, now

In 2016 World Rugby opened the World Rugby Hall of Fame in our town. The visitor attraction takes visitors from the history of the game to its global present on an inspirational journey through time using the latest HD touch-screen technology. Visitors can learn about all 121 World Rugby national unions, understand the variations of the sport and discover some of the iconic moments that created professionalism, Olympic inclusion and the values that unite the sport. Each of the over 130 World Rugby Hall of Fame inductees are celebrated at the Hall of Fame, learn more about these men and women and their greatest moments.
The ball was originally round, rather than the oval of today, and changed shape over a period of time as the game changed from a predominantly kicking one to a handling one. The shape of the ball was originally determined by the pig’s bladder used for the inside. A rather shrivelled 130 yearold ball was recently discovered in a blocked-up chimney behind the wooden panels of Old Big School, still containing remnants of the original rubber bladder.
A Rich Collection Established in the 1980s, the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum houses a rich collection of international rugby memorabilia. For a fascinating insight into the ball, the building and the birth of the game, the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum is a must.

Global Inspiration
In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed, largely of Old Rugbeians, and the first national code was introduced. Rugby School was the only team to play in white, and the reason England play in white today is that the first committee of the RFU was composed largely of Old Rugbeians.
the Rugby Football Museum, and the building with the longest continuous connection to the game of rugby in the world. The building in which the museum is housed has been at the centre of rugby ball manufacturing for over 160 years, beginning a tradition of rugby football manufacture that is carried on by Webb Ellis Ltd to this day.
