WELCOME TO THE RUGBY FESTIVAL OF CULTURE A warm welcome to the Rugby Festival of Culture, which runs between Sunday 24 June and Sunday 15 July. Following the success of last year’s festival we again offer a full three week programme of eclectic and engaging music, stage, comedy, film, heritage and art. There’s an array of food and drink on offer too. This year’s festival has the theme of ‘People and Place’ as we celebrate Rugby and its diversity of culture and creativity, its rich history, and the wealth of activity and opportunity in the town today. Within the festival Rugby School present STEAMfest, an exhilarating and distinctive celebration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics from school students and guests.

Don’t forget to share your festival pictures with us. #RFOC #FindYourselfHere

Take time to look through the guide – there’s plenty inside. Indulge yourself, try something different, socialise, laugh, discover, enjoy, celebrate, learn and have fun. Many of the events are free but where booking is required you may need to do so early to avoid disappointment! This year also sees the launch of a new Rugby Visitor Guide. Pick up a copy of the guide at the Visitor Centre and explore some of our wonderful town in between festival events.

2

As always, a heartfelt thanks to all those individuals, local businesses, groups, organisations and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to put the festival together – and of course our sponsors, advertisers, Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council for their continued support. We hope you take the opportunity to enjoy a variety of events over the next three weeks with friends and family and help us celebrate The Rugby Town!

The exhibition is the second art intervention inspired by the Redding Collection of photographic glass negatives which capture parts of Rugby life during the 1950s to 1970s. A tour of Rugby via the town’s real ale pubs – rich in heritage, community and atmosphere. Rugby is a market town which packs a punch when it comes to beer. Each of the pubs included in this trail have their own unique characteristics but have one thing in common - they sell Cask Ale. This great British product that is unfiltered and unpasteurised beer, conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure.

Rugby School Drama Scholars Present An Act of Kindness

Art, Design & Technology Show 2018

by Helena Westerman

Winner of Theatre Weekly ‘Best of the Fest’ Award for Best Writing, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017 Two strangers meet at a bus stop. Martin, a successful young professional, leads a wildly different life to Leila, a daydreaming waitress at a greasy spoon. Living amidst the chaos of London, both struggle with what is expected of them as a man, as a woman, and where they fit into society. Set solely at a bus stop, this intimate two-hander gives a snapshot into the lives of Leila and Martin as their worlds collide, revealing the impact a simple hello can have on a fellow human. An Act Of Kindness is a reaction to the current feeling of hostility, uncertainty and distrust, and will drive away your Brex-Trump blues. Funny, warm, relatable to all humans. Hitchcock’s silent chiller hits the big screen at Rugby School with a new live jazz score from the Meg Morley Trio. Subtitled ‘A Story of the London Fog’, Hitchcock’s Ripper-inspired thriller is a wonderful evocation of the capital at its murkiest. Face wrapped in a scarf, onto the scene arrives the title character (played by matinee idol and latterly gay icon Ivor Novello), seeking bed and board and perhaps connected with a string of gruesome murders. The film is widely regarded as Hitch’s first masterpiece, and it’s fascinating to see how many of his tricks and techniques were already present in the silent era.
