Rugby School UK, founded in 1567

OUR HERITAGE

Rugby School was founded in 1567 and has a rich heritage as one of the UK’s leading independent schools. It is known for its academic excellence and has been described by Tatler UK as “a school at the top of its game”.

Rugby School has produced Prime Ministers, an Archbishop of Canterbury, and a Nobel Peace prize winner. Old Rugbeians have contributed to politics, the arts, philosophy, medicine, public life, stage and screen. They have upheld justice as judges and lawmakers; helped run governments, schools, universities; founded businesses; won Olympic gold medals.

One such Old Rugbeian was the forefather of the world-famous sport, rugby. In 1823, during a game of football, it is said that Rugby student William Webb Ellis caught the ball and “with a fine disregard for the rules… took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the rugby game”.

OUR ETHOS

Rugby’s greatest Headmaster Dr Arnold (1828 - 1842) transformed British education and formed the model that many other top schools have since adopted. He recognised a modern concern: that education should go beyond learning as simply the acquisition of knowledge and address the formation of character, too.

Our School ethos ‘the whole person, the whole point’ is central to how we approach education. Academic excellence lies at the heart of the experience, but sport, the arts and enrichment activities are all key components to an individual’s development of character. It is through this dynamic ‘whole person’ approach that we nurture our students into resilient, reflective, versatile, globally-minded, thinkers, communicators, and collaborators. These are core traits to last a lifetime.

OUR NETWORK

With over 450 years of heritage, Rugby School has one of the best-established international networks of alumni in the world. By joining Rugby School Thailand, your child gains a valuable passport to an exclusive group that share values and ambitions. Access to such alumni opens doorways and presents opportunities throughout life.

A BRITISH EDUCATION

We are an international school that genuinely captures the British independent school experience. There are many benefits to this, including:

• specialist subject teachers from an earlier age;

• a student teacher ratio at 10:1;

• setting in core subjects according to academic ability and potential;

• a range of boarding options available from Year 7;

• a ‘House’ system that promotes collaboration across age groups;

• multiple sporting and enrichment opportunities;

• participation for all in sporting teams, music ensembles and plays;

• rigorous UK standards on safeguarding and pastoral care.

TEACHERS

We have an outstanding team of teachers from around the world. They are drawn from top independent and government schools, with proven records as educators and scholars. Every teacher has a passion for their subject and a determination to nurture learning and critical thinking in students.

Our teaching staff have continuous performance assessments and are offered regular professional development opportunities. This is an important part of maintaining the high quality education associated with Rugby School.

We expect innovation, reflective practice, collaboration, and rigour from all staff, as well as students. The result is a first-class community of learners with a global outlook.

ACADEMICS

A Rugby School education offers so much more than excellent exam results, but the foundation stone is in the classroom.

The Pre-Prep School follows an enhanced UK curriculum, providing an exceptional start to each child’s school career in a happy, supportive environment. This is a crucial stage in education for core knowledge and understanding to be instilled and good habits to be formed.

(Aged 7 to 13)

The Prep School draws from the best of the UK National Curriculum and the much-admired British independent school approach. Students are assessed regularly to monitor progress, and key elements of the syllabus derive from the UK Independent Schools Examination Board (www.iseb.co. uk), which sets the standard for entry to the most selective UK independent schools.

SENIOR

(Aged 13 to 18)

We share the nomenclature of Rugby School UK, so our Senior year groups are known as F Block (Year 9), E Block (Year 10), D Block (Year 11), Lower XX (Year 12), and XX (Year 13).

The F Block curriculum is designed to engage students in a broad academic experience, preparing them for IGCSE courses. In the E and D Blocks, students take IGCSE subjects, including a core curriculum of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, at least one Modern Language, either History or Geography, and two other elective subjects. In the Sixth Form (Year 12 and 13), students will choose three or four subjects to study at AS and A Level; these are gold-standard qualifications recognised globally as a path to the world’s leading universities.

SPORT

Sport is firmly in our DNA. We invest in top-quality coaches and sport of all kind plays a major role in School life.

From indoor and outdoor sports centres to swimming pools, tennis courts and expansive pitches, we have facilities that enable every student to find their strengths and passions. We place importance on sport because it offers so much more than just physical fitness and ability. A healthy body is a healthy mind; exercise boosts cognitive ability and increases wellbeing. It can also be through sports where we see our students develop resilience, collaboration and better communication skills; where they learn to win without arrogance and be gracious in defeat.

THE ARTS

Our students are fortunate to have the space, time, specialist facilities, and expert teachers to enable their creative talents to blossom.

We nurture skill and creativity in the arts from an early age. Every student is invited to participate in dance and drama, audition for plays, perform on stage, learn musical instruments, and discover different design processes. The multitude of creative achievements by our students are celebrated with shows, concerts and exhibitions; these not only showcase talent but enable our students to develop confidence, resilience, the ability to reflect on their work, communication and collaboration skills.

ENRICHMENT

Rugby School Thailand has an award-winning enrichment programme, which feeds into our commitment to educate ‘the whole person’. Our large campus and world-class facilities mean we offer a wide choice of enrichment activities – usually more than 70 options per term!

Our enrichment programme is designed to ensure every child finds something beyond the classroom which they are both good at, and enjoy. This can be anything from debating, coding or environmental action, to ballet, sailing or martial arts.

Through our rich and varied enrichment programme we see our students demonstrating many of Rugby’s core traits, such as resilience, versatility and global-mindedness.

ENHANCED SCHOOL DAY

We operate an enhanced school day akin to the traditional British independent system. It incorporates sport, enrichment activities and homework, alongside academic lessons. This longer School day allows all students to benefit from:

• greater depth in academic subjects and the development of critical-thinking skills.

• integrated daily PE and sports, and regular competitive matches;

• more time to experience the joy of music, art and drama;

• a variety of 70+ daily enrichment activities;

• the freedom to relax and enjoy time with friends and family after the School day is over.

Combined with our smaller class sizes, world-class campus and internationally experienced staff, the enhanced School day means we offer exceptional value as one of the leading international schools in Asia.

PASTORAL CARE

Whilst you naturally want the best possible education for your child, above all else you want your child to be healthy and happy.

Maintaining the welfare of our community is embedded in everything we do. Our students enjoy regular exercise, spend time in nature, develop personal hobbies and reap the rewards of their ‘House’ peer group support.

We have expert pastoral leads in each section of the School, dedicated wellbeing teams and a highly commended pro-active safeguarding model. Our pastoral care programme is designed to support students and help them to realise the importance of their own wellbeing, as well as that of others. It builds their resilience and their global-minded outlook.

All of these factors contribute to children here enjoying happy, healthy School lives in which they flourish.

BOARDING

Rugby School Thailand’s award-winning boarding School offers students from Year 7 a warm and homely environment with exceptional pastoral care.

Our boarding students live in a happy family of friends, whilst seamlessly increasing independence. They cut out commutes and gain more time for studying, discovering new hobbies and enjoying healthy leisure time. Boarders have more time and space to make the most of everything our School has to offer.

There are three boarding houses specifically designed with our students in mind. Each house has excellent facilities and a wonderful team of staff, including House Parents, Assistant House Parents and a matron.

We have various boarding options to suit different family needs:

• Part Boarding (up to 3 nights per week)

• Weekly Boarding (up to 5 nights per week)

• Full Boarding (up to 7 nights per week, except for term breaks)

HOUSE SYSTEM

The House system originated at Rugby School over 200 years ago and remains as central as ever. As part of a ‘House’, students find great joy and sense of purpose, whilst making friendships for life across many year groups.

From Year 3 onwards, each student joins a ‘House’ that consists of students of all ages. Students are rewarded with house points as they achieve in sports, music, drama, and enrichment activities; or as they demonstrate hard work and good values, such as kindness and consideration for others. House points are valued and become a source of both individual and collective pride as they are tallied throughout the year.
