AID-TUBE

- 02 -

Design brief In SSA (Sub-Sahara Area), the weather is too hot to store diarrhoea medicine without any cooling system. But the current medicine carriers are all expensive and not very convenient for patients to carry with. “The last mileto the patient is often the most challenging between hospitals (medicine distribution points) to their dwellings.

Frugal Design On average, 45 to 50 percent of sub-Saharan Africans live below the poverty line. An estimated 40 percent lived on less than a dollar (US) a day.

49% Under-five mortality by diarrhoea Children under five died in SSA Live below the poverty line

Target Group Diarrhoea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in rural communities in Africa, particularly in children under the age of five. So, the target group must be children under the age of five. But the children at that young age cannot take medicines themselves, so their parents (especially their mothers) should be taken into consideration. - 03 -

Types of medicines Most of this kind of medicines are sealed in tinfoil and plastic shells. It is not only a good way for patients to take pills or capsules, but also a good way to resist water and strong sunlight.

Storage requirements Most of the information on the packaging includes the way of “How to store”. The temperature restrictions are “Do not store above 30 ℃ /25 ℃ ” and “Protect from light”. It seems that the environment in Sub-Sahara is really hard for the storage of the diarrhoea medicines. Transport requirements One main weakness of transport systems in Sub-Saharan Africa is the lack of transport infrastructures. At the conclusion of the survey performed in the framework of this study, it appears that the transport infrastructures, in particular roads, account for over 43% of the public transport vehicle malfunction.

UX requirements There should be braille for blind people on the surface of packaging. It is a quite useful design because the Onchocerciasis ("river blindness") is also very common in Sub-Sahara area. This inspired me that touching can also be a good way to convey information or to instruct taking medicines. - 04 -

Incorporated cap

Aid-Tube consists of a cap and acrylic capsule for medicines. The cap is specially designed for the most common bottled drink in SSA. The outer bottle and the inner acrylic container both can protect the medicine form crushing and extremely hot environment.

AID-TUBE Design for “the last mile between pills and patients

- 06 -

The shape of Aid-tube is just like normal test tube, so when it be kept in the hospital, it can be easily placed and stored. And when it be distributed to patients, they just need a bottled beverage to keep the medicine in the container cool. It can be used to store and transport powder, pills, capsule and even injection.

GAPS SERIES

- 08 -

Inspiration Gaps is a series of origami lamps made mainly by combining sulfuric paper units. "Triangle unit" is a type of modular origami that originates from East Asia. I accidentally found it can create very unique lighting effect as a lampshade. Then, I tested the transmittance of several kinds of paper, and found that the sulfuric paper, which has highest transmittance, is exactly what I want. I developed two different sizes units and three kinds of combination methods using sulfuric papers to make three different types of lamps according to the shape of natural plants.

Ideas generation Referring to my observation in local stores, Smarties is a playful product whose buyer are most kids and teens. So, this design is not only for good appearance, but also for playing. There are various ideas on these two pages.

- 16 -

Final design Idea 4 is the most playful one and was developed to the final design. This idea was inspired by a very classical game-Pacman. The shape of it represents the yellow pixel Pacman eating beans. It be made from one simple carton board using creative folding ways. The upper half part is a little bigger than the other half to ensure it can move smoothly. Both parts contain beans.

Model Making Then I made several models with papers and carton boards to test its feasibility.

Design Detail The catch designed as the current Smarties’ cap Upper part of the packaging is a little bit lower to ensure the “mouth” working smoothly

Playful packaging!

Smarties animal series Combining the pacman figure with animal figures is a good way to stimulate the desire for kids to buy them, collect them and play with them. And, when you pour the chocolate beans out, it can represent a rainbow coming out of the animal ’ s mouth just like cartoon characters do.

- 18 -

Series The final design is not only about the packaging, but also about the new VI for Smarties. According to the different colors of the chocolate beans, different kinds of packaging in the shape and colors of different animals can be made.

LIGHT UP 2016

- 30 -

Inspiration When 2016 new year came, I wanted to make a 3D design gif. as a shining welcome for 2016. This idea was inspired by the combination of the electronic components on breadboard and the neon light box. The shining of the circuits and components represents the lighting up of the old-style neon light.

SMOKE UNDER WATER

- 36 -

Abstract An underwater video shot by my phone to show the process of pigment being dripped into the water. The fluctuations in the water and the colors of the pigment gives a psychedelic visual effects. I also designed a font for this video called ZRL-Interval (shown in the next page).
