A Not ‘Messianic’ Path: A Deep Delve into Socorro Cult Venice May A. Abrece

T

here was peace in Socorro Bayanihan Services, the group is known as a civic organization. Yet the news broke out— Socorro Bayanihan Services Incorporated (SBSI) has become the center of a cultism debate in the Philippines. A purported god-sent messiah has established and reformed his kingdom in Sittio Kapihan in Socorro town. A cult has risen, contrived by the self-proclaimed reincarnated son of God; Jey Rence Quilario, famously known as ‘Senior Agila’. Socorro Bayanihan Services Incorporated (SBSI) has alleged over its heinous cases; unpleasant treatment to children and its members, and immoral and unacceptable practices forced on children. Senator Risa Hontiveros revealed in the senate hiring that there are over 3,650 members, and 1,587 are believed to be minors in the cult. Since 2019, Siargao Schools Division Superintendent Karen Galanida shared how they have been reaching out to SBSI to encourage them to bring the children to school through the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Alternative Learning System (ALS). Despite this, “800-plus learners have dropped out of school. Alongside with 103 DepEd personnel who also resigned, due to their departure in Sitio Kapihan”, Galanida said. It was a gritting-of-teeth emotion as an awful truth was unveiled. Children are as young as 12 were forcibly married off to adults, repeatedly raped, deprived of school, forced to train as soldiers, and physically punished by the messianic leader “Senior Agila”. A 15-year-old alias “Jane”, said that child members are compelled to engage in sexual activity with Senior Agila before their arranged marriages to older men. Children are told that having sex with men is a salvation and a way to go to heaven, she added. In another case, alias Renz and Coco, a 12-year-old male minors- testified to the horrendous act of forcing them to labor and be part of Quilario's private army called “Soldiers of God”. Happenings inside the cult are not only confined to the horrific cases that children have faced. Extensive punishment called the “Aroma beach” — a man-made pit full of peoples’ urine and feces is used as an inhibited part of the cult. Additionally, there is a deprivation and lack of access to healthcare, jobs, and education. People in the Sittio Kapihan are like birds with wings removed, locked in a cage full of thorns. Quilario and 12 others have been the targets of several complaints and legal actions brought before the Surigao City Prosecutors' Office. The investigation and resolution are currently being handled in senate hearings..--- "We want the guilty to face justice. And after the offender is brought to justice, your kids will be safe, they'll be able to go back to school, and you'll get full government support’ underlined Senator Risa Hontiveros. Behind the beauty of Socorro, Surigao Del Norte is a horrendous secret kept. A peaceful organization has been disturbed and shapeshifted by the wicked messiah into his desired kingdom full of abuse, violence, injustice, and hatred. A path has been made— and it brought catastrophe to everyone who has been part of the mass exodus— who have followed the Senior Agila “The Messiah”.

The Price of Perfection: UP Valedictorian Edsel Codoy’s Regrets On Studying Hard Grace C. Golong

W

hile the pursuit of academic excellence is often celebrated, it’s crucial to understand that this journey can carry a hefty emotional price tag. For some, the path to academic perfection is littered with overlooked opportunities, missed connections with peers, and the suppression of personal passions. It’s the truth that Edsel Suhayon Codoy, a summa cum laude graduate, courageously shared during his valedictory speech. He stated, "My biggest regret in UP Cebu was studying hard. Wait, wait. Let me finish. Studying hard and doing nothing else." His words didn’t come from textbooks; they came from the depths of his heart, revealing the profound regret he felt throughout his college years.

It's a message that echoes the silent struggles faced by countless students who, in their quest for perfection, have sometimes forgotten to savor life's joys, take chances, and connect with the world beyond textbooks and lecture halls.

hrough his story, Edsel's vulnerability shines as a beacon of shared humanity. It's a tale of missed opportunities and untaken risks, a chronicle of the times he shied away from joining campus organizations, declined leadership roles and retreated into the comforting arms of a small circle of friends. The Rise of the Machines: Can AI Replace Human Broadcasters?

P

Shaniah Thiffany I. Picar

hilippines’ biggest media company GMA Network, has taken a bold step by launching AI Sportscasters Maia and Marco as the hosts for the NCAA Season 99: New Heroes of the Game Opening Ceremony. With the surge of advancing technology in this digital age, it comes as no surprise to witness only the leading broadcasting company in the country to introduce an AI’s power in the realm of journalism as well. Unbeknownst to some, Artificial Intelligence has been evolving and progressing since the 1980s, but only recently has it started becoming prominent with the popularity of AI tools that can generate “human-like” conversations images, and even videos. Nowadays, it seems that these mere tools are advancing into something more alarming than everyone has expected—it’s slowly becoming an alternative to human creatives. Various creative careers such as graphic designing, digital illustration, screenwriting, and filmmaking are undergoing severe transformation. Anything can be generated in a few clicks and types, whether it would be an advice for a friend, a logo for a company, or a fully-made animation for a marketing campaign. It’s faster, easier, and relatively much, much more cheap.

“It is essential to strike a balance between the use of AI and the preservation of human involvement in journalism. While AI can handle certain tasks effectively, it lacks the nuanced understanding, intuition, and contextual comprehension that human reporters possess. Being a reporter is not solely about relaying facts but also about capturing the human experience, providing critical analysis, and holding power accountable. These aspects require the human touch, empathy, and critical thinking that AI currently cannot replicate.” Maia and Marcos continue to be a testament to a advancing technology and a glimpse of the future, showcasing what AI is capable of bringing into the field of creatives—not just journalism. Whether or not the organization will push forward with this breakthrough, innovation would still be undoubtedly inevitable.

Looking into broadcasting or journalism, AI has converted from being primarily used for backstage purposes to on-screen positions. And it continues to prompt a need for caution as this rapid technological wave reshapes these traditional job landscapes. With a long future ahead of AI, the possibilities are endless.

And with GMA’s initiative, it is only a matter of time before other companies follow through. Soon enough, the country and the whole world—will be introduced to the age of flourished AI. And by then, its capabilities would be limitless.

up, adults, especially seniors, experience falling teeth. Being toothless is quite a hassle for adults. They cannot chew the food properly, have unusual speech, etc. This is also the struggle for people who have pyorrhea, an erosion of dental sockets. These may be caused by different circumstances in people's lives.

However, the question remains whether to embrace this change fully or to proceed with caution. Chito Trinidad, a veteran sports journalist, and a former GMA Network Sportscaster, said whoever runs the sports section for his home network is “stupid” for integrating AI in a position that is spontaneous and requires reactions and emotions, pointing out that Artificial Intelligence does not and will never have any of those traits. Netizens have also voiced similar commentaries on multiple social media outlets.

research team of Japanese pharmaceutical scientists (Toregem Biopharma), funded by Kyoto University, produced a drug to regrow the new 3rd set of teeth. Humans are known to have two sets of teeth: the baby teeth (at half a month old to 12 years old) and the permanent teeth (starting at the age of 12). Hence, they discovered that humans have "tooth buds" for the third set.

They experimented with the drug by applying it to the ferret. The animal generated an additional seventh front tooth. Due to this, the medicine could produce thirdset teeth in the animals. They'll JAPAN’S REGROWING’ conduct the trials on HUMAN TEETH healthy adults in July 2023 and possibly put it on the market in 2030. “In any case, we're hoping to see a time when tooth-regrowth medicine is a third choice alongside dentures and implants," - Katsu Takahashi, cofounder of Toregem Biopharma and head of dentistry and oral surgery at Kitano Hospital in Osaka.

CUTTING TIES WITH BUDGET CUTS Samantha Mae Malapit Cartooning by: Karl Danielle Bunagan

O

ne’s manifestation of UP cutie or PUP cutie threatens to become a much harder feat as budget allocations on Philippine Higher Education disembowel starving students craving for quality education worry-free of the financial burden, which, in the very first place, should be accessible to every individual. In the previous year, out of the 105,000 UP applicants, only 15,000 students were admitted; a similar case can be witnessed in the ‘lucky’ 20,000 students of the 173,000 applicants who passed the Polytechnic University of the Philippines college admissions, reinforcing State Universities and Colleges nationwide to also cut down the population of students to be admitted to a Higher Education Institution due to a lack of budget funds for teachers and school facilities. The Philippines has not even 100% fully recuperated as a poorly managed, pandemic-stricken country with existing institutions still in a hybrid-toblended-learning as their learning set up in the time of the prolonged education crisis that highlights the deficiencies paving the ideal solutions for what needs to be done but the governing state lacks the initiative on. The state of State Universities and Colleges suffer as 30 out of the 117 SUCs in the Philipines face a major budget cut amidst a 50,000 increase in the number of enrollees this school year; the largest budget cut of the 30 affected schools is the University of the Philippines (UP) budget with over a P2.9 billion cut that has decreased even more over the previous years.

The 2024 National Expenditure Program (NEP) allocated P100.9 billion in funding for SUCs in the upcoming year, countering this year’s P107 billion budget. A substantial chunk of the affected budget comes from the Capital Outlay (CO)–budget used in infrastructure construction and acquiring facilities–funding wherein 62% of CO is cut from the P14.6 billion budget allotting to only P5.5 billion under the Marcos Jr. administration. However, there is a 5% increase in Personnel Services–salaries, wages, and other compensation–in the 2024 budget. Observably, the 2024 National Budget composition dangerously allocates P4.9 billion for confidential funds and a striking P5.3 billion for intelligence funds– a portioned slice, even more, sufficient to cover the budget cut in the education sector. People in positions seem to have forgotten that education is a right, not a privilege. The 2024 National Budget should be critically dissected under public scrutiny, and instead reallocate CIFs for social services, studentteacher welfare, and quality tertiary education for every Filipino regardless of their socioeconomic standing.

ice President Sara Z. Duterte, who also serves as the Secretary of the Department of Education, shed light on a significant aspect of her role that concerns the use of the Department of Education's confidential fund (CF) in matters related to national security. She emphasized the need to prevent the youth from falling victim to such influences and ensure a brighter future for the nation.
