Camping it up again O

NCE upon a time, long ago when I still thought it was OK to wear beige suede trousers, I drove a converted ex-army ambulance with a trailer to pre war-torn Kabul just for fun. By the time the beast had consumed most of Iran’s oil reserves and broken its tow hitch somewhere near Herat (I had to tow the trailer dangling on a chain and swinging wildly about through the night all the way to Kandahar) I was cured of any affection for trailers or camper vans or the whole bloody business. I vowed that from then on, if I had to go travelling, it would be in a large Mercedes car with a big wad of cash in my back pocket to pay for the best hotels. Things haven’t really turned out that way because of budgetary restraints but on the whole I have managed to stay away from campervans. Then about a year ago, a couple in their late 50’s turned up at The Workhouse in a large camper van to inspect my electric bikes. He emerged from the front of the van all suntan and shorts and ready for business. 10 minutes later she emerged from the back of the same van in high heel mules and sunglasses pushed back on top of her hair holding a large cold glass of Chardonnay and obviously well on the way to getting very sloshed long before the sun had reached its zenith let alone the yardarm. In the course of the conversation it became apparent that he lived in the front and listened to Sinatra albums, drove and read campervan magazines while she lived in the lounge at the rear with a fridge full of vino and afternoon TV. I remember thinking at the time this is a world away from my own rather basic camper van experiences. Then last weekend some very, very generous friends lent us a tastefully converted late model VW van to go away for the weekend to a wedding South of Bristol. The van was comfy, well-appointed and whistled down the M5 at high speed with the wine bottles and cutlery gently jingling in the back. It was time for a reappraisal of the situation and the place to start was with my regular companion, e Bay. I soon got fed up with looking at bare white Mercedes Sprinters in Wolverhampton with only 125,00 miles on the clock and gravitated (as is my habit) to the seedier end of the market to see if I could grab myself a bargain. It is the custom with campervan owners on e bay to take lots of pictures of the vans, both in and outside, and down the lower end of the market this gives a not necessarily very edifying insight into people’s lifestyles and a snapshot of some dastardly crimes against tasteful interior décor. Do none of these people watch Kirsty and Phil? You HAVE to paint everything beige if you want to sell, sell, sell. Look at this Ford Cargo kitchen, it’s an absolute disgrace and what an earth are they thinking with Small Ads 4 the little blue L.E.D.s at the bottom of the splashback! As for this next jumble of Letters 6 soiled bedclothes in the bedroom of a converted ambulance, pardon me for sayArt 8 ing but I really don’t think this is going to persuade anybody to part with their hard Art workshops 12 earned cash.

However you could have knocked me down with a feather when I discovered that the actual J type that lived in Frank Gallaghers back garden in Shameless was for sale for £750. Not only that, they had left the back of the van untouched from when they ﬁnished ﬁlming! However the prize for the van that did have me running for the toilet is this shocking pink shocker built on a Cortina chassis. In the end common sense prevailed and I have decided to buy a massive American RV that probably won’t even get round the corner by the library, but what the heck, look at those hydraulic electrically operated white leather drivers seats. All I need now is for some kind reader to loan me £32,000.

Dear Pete, Living as I do in beautiful Shropshire, having moved from Birmingham fifteen years ago, yet at some significant distance, especially by electric bicycle, from Presteigne, it is not until the latter days of the month that I normally get my hands on your organ. I am however always heartened to learn what events I’ve missed. Sadly, last month I did not get the mag until after the copy date and having read the stimulating letters section, I felt a great desire to wade in. Is it too late for wading? If not, read on ….. I enjoy your editorials greatly. They often amuse me, at other times they puzzle me and occasionally they mystify me. I value them because they’re eccentric, quirky and highly individual. What I particularly enjoy is being loaded with leftwing misinformation. I find it so refreshingly different from the national “free” press, in the main owned by very rich men, which boringly doles out the absolute unvarnished truth on a daily basis. Nevertheless, I want my turn to flog my view of the planet from your soapbox. • I think that the United States should return the island of Diego Garcia to Britain or even to the Chagossians. I’m not saying that it wasn’t very kind of us to forcibly remove all the islanders so that the US could turn their island into a huge military base but they’ve had enough fun now and should go home. • Margaret Thatcher, aaah! I still find it hard to suppress my emotions when I see that bag. She always had it with her didn’t she? Well, I’m pleased to note that the Cameron government is carrying on her good work and that of the admirable Tony Blair in emasculating the trade unions and dismantling worker protection. No doubt you, Pete, have several nubile young interns at Broad Sheep House waiting on your every whim, more than happy to do so for zilch. Quite right too. Employers should be able to pay whatever wages they like and hire and fire at will. After all, without them, where would we all be? …. Well, where? • And just don’t get me started on the feckless EU. Always going on about human rights, back-pedalling over invading Iraq, spending all that money on culture. Culture, I ask you! Straight bananas? It’s that lot who are straight bananas. I mean, when did you last see a banana-shaped banana? Come on, when? And worst of all, allowing freedom of movement. We’re overrun in the UK. I mean next year you’re probably going to have to bring out a Romanian edition, Pete. • Finally, just let me say that I didn’t begrudge a penny spent on Mrs Thatcher’s funeral. cinema BEHIND THE CANDELABRA (Cert 15) Despite successfully suing the Daily Mirror for suggesting he was gay, it was nevertheless an open Hollywood secret that the outrageously camp ivory-tinkler, Liberace, lived in ﬂagrante with his young chauffeur, Scott Thorson. Steven Soderbergh, who teased that SIDE EFFECTS would be his swansong, drew on Thorson’s autobiography to make an HBO biopic that’s now enjoying a cinema release, with a highly convincing Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon equally plausible as the teenage Thorson. Soderbergh gleefully reveals the pianist’s plastic surgeon (a suitably pinched Rob Lowe) trying to fashion Thorson into a younger Liberace and his failed efforts to adopt him, plus some intense bubble-bath action! With a supercilious Dan Ackroyd as Liberace’s agent and Debbie Reynolds as his sanctiﬁed mother, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA is a cast-iron hoot. All reviews by Mark Williams

PACIFIC RIM (Cert 15) It’s 2020 and from below the Paciﬁc Ocean giant monsters known as Kaiju rise to conquer the world, our only defence being the Jaegers, huge robots controlled by two pilots whose minds are locked in unison. Ultimately however it’s a losing battle and in desperation the authorities turn to an untried novice Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi, NORWEGIAN WOOD) and a washed-up pilot, Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnan, fresh from costarring in DEADFALL) who are tasked to drive an apparently obsolete, experimental Jaeger. With the apocalypse imminent, this unlikely pair make a bravura last stand which in the hands of director Guillermo del Toro (PAN’S LABYRINTH, the HELLBOY franchise), becomes both a visual and dramatically tense tour de force, and set to be this summer’s epic sci-ﬁ blockbuster.

THÉRÈSE DESQUEYROUX (Cert 12A) The scions of two wealthy Bordeaux families, Thérèse and Bernard, make a marriage of political and financial convenience in 1920s France, but although attracted by the prospect of secure affluence, Thérèse finds herself increasingly at odds with her boorish, indecisive husband. Her sister-in-law’s scandalous affair with an outsider to their privileged little world, followed by the birth of a child she cannot love, add to Thérèse’s dissatisfaction, eventually prompting actions which have tragic consequences. Completed just before he died, Claude Miller’s (UN SECRET, THE ACCOMPANIST) interpretation of Francois Mauriac’s morally provocative novel is an elegant, subtle drama with a convincingly prickly Audrey Tautou (AMELIE) in the title role and the usually thuggish Gilles Lellouche (MESRINE, TELL NO-ONE) equally effective as Bernard. The Druidstone Hotel, Broadhaven

N May, twenty or so years ago, Mr Pernickety set off to stride some seventy miles of beautiful, deserted coast. The sky was cloudless, the sun was hot, pink thrift covered the cliff tops and the locals in the harbour taverns chattered in a foreign tongue. In his imagination Mr P could happily have been in some Mediterranean land – Sicily, perhaps, or the Pelleponese – although, in fact, he was in the westernmost point of the land beyond the Marches, in Pembrokeshire – a mere three hours’ joyous drive from home. Scrambling one morning on his backside down a shaley cliff bank to one of the most beautiful beaches he’d ever seen, he walked ecstatically the mile of lowtide strand until his way back up took him past the Druidstone – a large Victorian villa most happily sited above that secluded haven, and now an hotel of remarkable character. Without any further thought he booked a week, later on in the year, to return with his family. This was to be the first of seventeen always happy annual visits, providing experiences and memories for his children that must have become important elements of what the late Antony Powell would have called their ‘personal myths’. In a wish to share these joys with his Lovely Companion (now his Lovely Wife) and her son, the Children’s Menu Consultant, Mr P returned to the Druidstone for the first time in four years. As in May those twenty years ago, the sun shone without break, and only a gentle inshore breeze rippled the mild, limpid sea into tiny, unsurfable waves. Despite the sad passing last year of its original founder, Jane Bell (who had inherited the house from her father in 1972 and turned it into a wonderfully, uniquely relaxed and charming hotel) the Druidstone hasn’t changed. It has, thank God, retained an air of the eccentric, slightly shabby dwelling of an artistic, chaotic and thoughtful family. It is not a destination for prissy, boring fuss-pots who think an hotel should be a highly efficient sojourning machine. Here the body will be well rested and fed, but so, too, will be the soul. But Mr Pernickety is not employed (if you could call it employment) by the Editor of the Woolly Organ to write about philosophy or travel. He, the LC (for thus she will remain despite her change in status) and the CMC arrived back for dinner after a walk along the coast from Broadhaven (a different sort of place from Druidstone, where Mr Whippy parks on a concrete esplanade serving non-dairy product to bare-torsoed young men plastered in tattoos of nugatory artistic merit and, no doubt, the cause of ultimately deep regret). The sun, on course to drop behind the peaks on the north west headland of St Bride’s Bay, was working itself into a gold and scarlet frenzy which lit the dining-room from two aspects, while some lucky punters ate on a terrace outside with an uninterrupted view of the couche de soleil. Inside, simple pine tables, c1980, sit with retro chairs of the same vintage, mixed in, bizarrely with silver wedding chairs (escaped from one of the several wedding parties which take place in a geo-dome outside). On the walls in the dining-room (and throughout the hotel) are

some wonderful, high quality and atmospheric paintings, mostly by nearby artists. On the tables are jam jars full of wild coastal flora, and around the room, some cheerful bunting left over from a recent musical jamboree. To kick off her Druidstone dining experience, the LC had a plate of squid and salad. Mr P could have told her (were he not making an effort to stem his customary didacticism) that whatever you do with a squid, it is always white, slightly rubbery and tastes of not much. As a result, there appeared on her lovely face a small moue of disappointment. Mr P on the other hand enjoyed his confit of duck salad served with an unusual confection of caramel and sesame seeds, which, though a little crunchy, did add an engaging contrast to the strong taste of the duck. The CMC, appreciating that Mr P is not as oofy as the G Gatsby, is learning self-restraint; he had also just scoffed two packets of crisps, so declined an hors d’oeuvres. However, he joined Mr P in eating a brace of soft, crumbly fresh sea bass for his main course. The fish, with a simple back-up of roasted vegetables, was supreme. The Druidstone has a more-or-less inexhaustible supply of day-fresh sea food, and the chefs there know that simplicity of preparation makes the most of that freshness. Our bass tasted as if it had been caught in the early hours of that morning, and quite possibly by one of the chaps that stand around on the beach in the gloaming, tending long lines in the shallow tide, muttering to themselves and listening to the pip-pip-pip of home-going oyster catchers. The LC was very happy with her main dish of Fruitde-Mer, a pot-pourri of crustacean and fish which shared all the qualities of freshness of the sea bass. With the sunset to watch, Mr P and his party forgot about pudding, although, from past visits, there is always a good and often original selection. Their dinner, with a bottle of Big Top, Californian Zinfandel (good with the duck, and light enough for the sea bass) came to c£90 (including sunset and unique ambience). In general, an inevitable result of what the young Pernicketys would call the ‘well-chilled’ mood of the Druidstone and the manner in which it is run, is that things don’t always get done as efficiently as they might in, say, a Holiday Inn, or one of those awful hotels that Lenny

Henry advertises on the television. Delays do sometimes occur, and occasionally a dish might arrive at the table less than piping hot. True Druidstone aficionados don’t give a damn, because this place is about spirit and soul, wonderful music, diverse and unexpected encounters with unusual guests, fine, strong flavours in the dining room, sea sounds, sea scents, and views to lift the heart of all but the dreariest. Heart of Wales

ACK in the 60s, the infamous Dr Beeching wielded his “axe” on rural train networks and over 4,000 route miles were lost. It was justified on grounds of efficiency and saving money. But this was hardly a great and profound step forward in the history of human civilisation. And what looked like a saving to some, came at a cost to others: an economic cost to rural business, as trading shifted to bigger, better networked towns; A social cost to all the communities who lost access to public transport. And worse. Because when decent public transport is axed, our reliance on private cars grows. Spaces where children once played become dangerous, air pollution increases, and the local streets where we used to meet in passing to chat or do business, fill up with cars instead. At which point you find yourself asking “and what was the actual financial saving?” But Dr Beeching is no longer here to answer. Luckily a second round of train line cuts in the ‘80s … which could have left us stranded, without so much as a single Arriva train carriage packed from door to door with rugby supporters … was rejected. So we still have the Heart of Wales (Old Central Wales) Line. And my small part in this story really begins in June 2013 when I talked to David Edwards, Development Officer of the Heart of Wales line Forum, and a committee member of the Travelers Association (HoWLTA), at a café at Llandrindod Wells. National treasure Ask around and it is obvious that local people, train lovers and all kinds of tourists to the area love the Heart of Wales train line. It’s not just a valuable piece of proper, sustainable infrastructure … it’s also become a bit of a national treasure. But there aren’t many trains and the timetable doesn’t work well for a long day out or for people travelling to and from work. So there is a long section of the line that is underused. Financially speaking, lets just say today’s Beeching would have his eye on it. This isn’t always about making more cuts to save money, its also about making good decisions, sustainable ones, and so David spells it out, “we need more trains, to work with people’s schedules and meet demand.” In 2018 the existing franchise for all rail services in Wales is up for review. The HoW Forum is working

with Assembly Members, MPs and other supporters including Wales’ Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, to secure support for their development process. The line was built to provide a practical service for rural communities: ﬁrst freight, then public transport and tourism. It’s the reason that Llandrindod and the other spa towns boomed in the nineteenth century. Why not again now? “What we really need to make proper use of the route” David said, “is a two hourly service. And we are working to deﬁne ways of deliver this innovatively. It has to make economic sense.” 120 miles linking rural communities In modern cities, regular public transport is part of the economy. It’s used by everyone from business folk and commuters to students, shoppers, people on low incomes with no car and people on big incomes with no wish to take the car. In fact if it fails, even for just a few hours, there is a knock on effect for all kinds of business. So this is not just about ticket sales. Reliable and regular transport is vital to a good economy … from taking people to conferences and meetings, to bringing visitors into town. Could the Heart of Wales line perform the same kind of role in a rural Wales kind of way? David thinks it could, but not with the current timetable. At times of economic pressure public money is hard to come by and policy makers look to make savings. But through local economic networks, the Forum for Heart of Wales Line hopes to devise a new operational model … maybe co-operatively owned even … that will support local businesses. It will need everyone’s support. But with the right decisions now, Heart of Wales could once again become a cornerstone of local life and business, part of a sustainable transport network across the region.
