57,000 TWEETS

AM reluctant to use his real name for reasons that will become apparent so I shall refer to him as Rump henceforth. I am well and truly pissed off and terrified by Rump’s domination of the news schedules and I’m guessing you feel the same. As he is a great believer in the “Any publicity is good publicity” school of politics it’s possible that the only way to stop the man is to starve him of mentions. As a test of his all consuming influence I counted up the number of times he gets a name checked in a random copy of The Guardian. Wednesday 12th Feb his name appears 88 times!! Delving further into his hunger for publicity I discovered over nearly twelve years, from 2009 Rump tweeted around 57,000 times. On his most prolific day, June 5, 2020, he tweeted 200 times! A review by The New York Times found that one in every eight posts by Rump on Twitter “was a personal insult of some kind”. Targets of insults included politicians, journalists, news outlets, television hosts and programs, former staffers and associates, government agencies, business leaders, books critical of him, the State of California and State of New York, and entire countries. Phew! - Now that’s what I call dedicated tweeting. Okay that’s quite enough of me doing exactly the opposite of what I recommend, let’s switch to a more wholesome topicJohnny Vegas. From 2005 to 2011 Johnny starred in the magnificent BBC3 comedy series ‘Ideal’ as Moz a small time dope dealer. At the time there was no big fuss about it but it has maintained its cult following and you can now see all 7 series on BBC iPlayer. So since its so cold and dreary outside I recommend you give series 1 a miss (they are just finding their feet) cuddle

up on the sofa with your favourite stimulant and watch all the other 6 series.

Ideal is set in Salford and most of the series takes place in Moz’s flat and revolves around the eclectic array of characters that visit Moz to buy cannabis, socialise or both. Written by Graham Duff, who also appears as serial shagger Brian, everyone who passes through Moz’s flat is perfectly realised, whether the hilariously swaggering Gallagher-esque scally Psycho Paul stuck in 1995, necrophiliac neighbour Judith or the likeable PC, who supplies Moz with his stash. And that’s without mentioning the gangster who has a cartoon mouse mask permanently glued to his face, the rogue on permanent probation, a vacantly chirpy Geordie, an electro-punk band called Silicone Valets, the painfully boring horticulturalist and countless others. They pop in and out of Moz’s front door more times per episode than a Brian Rix farce. According to one reviewer “I genuinely believe that Ideal is the closest that BBC Three will ever come to ART” and it comes as no surprise that Johnny is about to bring it to the theatre and a version will be premiering at Lowry, Salford, in September 2025, with a six night run, kicking off on September 8th.

Finally I am delighted that Presteigne’s very own Everly Brothers - Home Of The Free have finished their new album. The duo, Alex Valentine and Dave Luke treat us to a collection of self penned songs featuring their soulful harmonies, Dave’s immaculate guitar playing on acoustic and electric plus a Danelectro baritone, a lap steel, a mandolin, and a resonator guitar. They are printing some CDs and hopefully vinyl. Catch them doing launch gigs over the summer, including the Dukes on May 10th. The album can be downloaded from their website www.hotfmusic.com, and will be available on streaming platforms in mid-March. Unfortunately the pair couldn’t do a full Broad Sheep photo shoot but here is a picture of Dave’s boot without which he would undoubtedly be unable to perform.

Music and Silence

IAM in the lift and it is singing raindrops keep falling on my head just like the man whose feet won’t fit, the doors open, into the mushroom-coloured corridor and a new and sugarier sound world, I did it my waaaaay dribbling like warm spit out of the wall speakers, compressed out of shape until it is hard to distinguish the trumpets, if that is what they are, from the strings, which may not be strings, and the robot crooning, on through the office door into the ringtones, an electronic pseudotintinnabulation that manages to combine a bit of Beyoncé with a hint of Taylor Swift and a soupçon of, Christ, did they do that to poor Louis Armstrong, and the only way out of this is to dive out of the office and it is raining so home and turn on daytime telly and what have we but a lion trampling over the savannah and the soundtrack goes in the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight with the interesting bits amputated and anyway the lion is not sleeping but creeping, try another channel and look it is personal hygiene products with the Black Dyke Mills Band then a fine advertisement for bog paper with, what, Beethoven’s Ninth, the Red Army Choir and a yellow labrador, and another, some shamus is creeping along a mean street somewhere in Chicago or possibly Los Angeles on mayhem bent with doom music containing the kind of augmented fourths that used to convey avantgardism but now convey the fact that someone somewhere is going to get a faceful of clichés from a gun that unfortunately fires only pretend bullets, and after the explosions the music will start up again so it is definitely time to turn to something about houses and interiors and there is a lovely sofa and some bookcases and kilims on the floor and of course the music is bleeding Vivaldi hacked out of the Four Seasons with a scented chainsaw, and by now the time has come to do something serious like for instance ringing up the bank and apparently they value my call because it is important to them and the waiting time is ninety minutes and here we go with a touch of Bach, nothing wrong with a touch of Bach except that in the middle of a bar a voice comes on to tell me that they value my call because it is important to them and all the information I require except the information I require

is on their website, and here is a touch of Bach again, nothing wrong with a touch of Bach except that it is the same touch of Bach as last time and it stops in the middle of the same bar as last time and the voice, which belongs to someone on holiday from prescribing lobotomies for helpless catatonics in mental hospitals, tells me that they value my call because it is important to them so it is time to say to hell with the bank and how about a bit of silence, and into the elevator and into the Co-op for a bottle of rum and the Co-op is full of Co-op Radio and the people behind the tills have a pale frantic look and they say what music they do not hear it any more but you can tell from their shadowed eyebags that they do, so you pay for the rum and escape into the car park where in spite of the wet tarmac spring is springing and the only sound is the birds doing their own music, and walk among the birds until the sun goes down, o the quiet freshness of it, and after your poor ears have had a nice rest it will be sensible to pour a large rum and listen to something on purpose, that you have chosen, that has not been inflicted upon the world by some marketing sonofabitch with tin ears and a mortgage. Something like, for instance, Home of the Free, the new album from Dave Luke. Which is excellent. Sam Song Twblwddymwch

Borderlines Film Festival

IT’S that time of year again and in screening over 80 films the annual Borderlines Film Festival won’t fail to entertain and indeed enlighten audiences right across the Marches. It’s the usual mix of mainstream, indie, documentary, and especially debut works and foreign titles that are unlikely to be shown anywhere else hereabouts, some of which I’ll give my two penn’orth on here.

I’M STILL HERE (12A) Best screenplay winner at the 2024 Venice Festival, Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) presents a compelling, often disturbing account of one-time political dissident Reubens Paiva who is taken away from his large, ebullient family for questioning never to reappear. His wife Eunice, played by wonderful Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres holds his distraught family together, unbowed and fighting for justice.

Another family-based drama but of a very differed stipe – not least because it’s a slightly ramshackle musical – is THE END (15) which features Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon heading a brood who’ve somehow survived global environmental collapse in their palatial underground bunker. By turns darkly hilarious and troubling and very different from Shannon’s 2011 outing as a paranoid survivalist, Take Shelter.

HOLY COW (12A) is one of several, if quite diverse films whose rural setting is appropriate to the Marches and includes Harvest, When Autumn Falls, Red Path and especially Welcome To The Orchard Of England. Filmed in the French Alps, director Louise Courvoisier’s rumbunctious feature debut employs a cast of local, newbie young actors, most notably Clement Faveau as hard-partying Totone who unexpectedly obliged to pay for his sister’s care decides to enter a high-stakes cheese making competition.

Classics are far from forgotten in this year’s Festival and include Julio Bracho’s hugely atmospheric 1954 Mexican masterwork Take Me In Your Arms and Mexican auteur Alberto Gout’s 1950 Adventuress, a wonderful tale of a posh young woman who must survive in her city’s seamy underbelly after her father’s suicide and mother’s infidelity. However a rare, big-screen showing of John Boorman’s ultra-gripping POINT BLANK starring an ice-cold Lee Marvin as a wounded gangster out for revenge should not be missed, not least for Johnny Mandel’s terrific soundtrack, Philip Lathrop’s luminous cinematography and Angie Dickenson as Walker’s tough sister-in-law.

At the other extreme we have a smattering of worthy and recent blockbusters and big-screen previews, some like Conclave and The Critic you may well know of, others like A TRAVELER’S NEEDS starring France’s greatest living actress, Isabelle Huppert and Pamela Anderson’s remarkable reinvention as an ageing Las Vegas dancer in THE LAST SHOWGIRL are brand new and fabulous.

Finally I must recommend the OPEN SCREEN competition at Hereford’s Courtyard on March 2nd which is the Festival’s annual showcase for locally made films, but for details of this plus the full listings and venue details log on to www.borderlinesfilmfdestival.org

L’Ecole des Amis, Credenhill, Hereford

MR PERNICKETY has always enjoyed a warm tingle about the word ‘French’ with its suggestion of something desirable, yet only just within reach: French fashion, French cinema, French lingerie, French wine and perhaps, above all, French cuisine.

Although France has latterly suffered a noticeable decline in some aspects of its former distinctive culture, the idea of Frenchness nevertheless still has the capacity to bestow a romantic frison. Not in the way, of course, that bad film-makers invariably depict Paris with a shot of the Eiffel Tower and the sound of an accordion; more in the way that Mr Pernickety recalls the aromas of Gitanes cigarette smoke and espresso coffee, sitting on a bentwood chair at a table in a leafy provincial square, with Deux Chevaux hooting their way through traditional French traffic chaos, while wizened little men in berets play pétanque on the dusty middle.

French cuisine has always held a special place in Mr P’s cultural innards, ever since he was taken to eat at the first incarnation of the Roux Bros’ Le Gavroche in Lower Sloane Street – an indelible experience.

Mr P must concede now that the pre-eminence of French cuisine in Britain has gradually diminished in the face of powerful competition from some remarkably inventive British chefs. Nevertheless, a few brave Gallics continue to wave the flag for their national cuisine with their own original ideas.

Until a few years ago, there was such a chef wielding his skillet in a much-loved place, tucked away in the folds of the South Herefordshire hills. Toi et Moi was popular amongst the region’s gastronomes. Cedric, the Frenchman who owned it, decided to close a few years ago for personal not commercial reasons. Evidently the urge to cook and serve extra-special victuals to an appreciative public still burned within him, and he looked around for new premises in the region. He found a charming empty Victorian schoolhouse in the not especially picturesque village of Credenhill, best-known its resident regiment of highly-skilled, extra valiant soldiers.

Last year, Cedric opened L’Ecole des Amis with an English colleague. They had tidied up the cavernous school room and filled it with inoffensively plain furniture transforming the place into a high-ceilinged chamber in chic stark white. Mr P went with a friend who is himself an Innovative Chef, to fill the gaps in Mr P’s knowledge of the finer points of cuisine. It was a Thursday in January, thus, unsurprisingly, not busy. From the corner where they sat they imagined what the sound level might be if the place were packed. As it was, Mr P and the IC, were able to focus on a convoluted philosophical discussion without recourse to hearing aids while they identified and evaluated what they were eating – a most enjoyable activity, for Mr P can report that to begin with, their bouches were well amused by various subtle little combinations of taste and texture that immediately woke the senses – an encouraging

overture with a glass of Jerez fino to sharpen the appetite as they read the menu with taste-buds aroused. The IC had a Truite Marinée aux Capres – a home-cured chalk stream trout, well presented, he said, also appreciating the acidic cut of the nonpareil capers but thought the lemon was in danger of overwhelming the flavour of the fish. Mr P ate a twice baked ewe’s milk cheese soufflé with bechamel sauce – so good he stopped talking for a moment. In the short wait that followed, he and his guest considered their surroundings. Concerned about possible noise levels, they noted that there was no napery or drapery to absorb the excessive sound or compensate for the cavernous space above them. A lower ceiling would make the place more intimate, decrease the noise, and the heating bill, which would cover the cost of laundering table-cloths. Curtains covering the end wall would help too. But generally Mr P and his guest were relaxed and so far, much impressed with Cedric’s skills.

The IC was served his Confit de Canard and declared his pleasure with the first mouthful, before shoving a forkful at Mr P. Its crispy flakiness brought out the full flavour of the Canard, with a distinctive jus on a bed of soft, almost fluffy Puy Lentils with roasted pears. Mr P was delighted to see his guest so happy. He chose for himself a simple braised lamb shank, with butternut squash. Tender and flaking off the bone it was a lovely old fashioned dish gingered up by the squash. With the lamb he drank a glass of Beaujolais, Morgon 2018 which suited it well.

The IC declined a pudding, but Mr P had a Creme Brulée a la Vanille, heeding the IC’s advice that the custard beneath the caramelised top should not be sweet, It was not, and the IC was right, It was the better, more sophisticated for it. The bill was only a whopping-ish £145, but in Mr P’s view, worth it, and easily worth an hour’s drive for someone seeking a dinner as an event rather than a mere nosebag.

The next time anyone offers Mr P dinner at a restaurant of his own choice, he looks forward to revisiting L’Ecole des Amis. Mr Pernickety

Shock Report by top US climate Expert says Pace of Global Heating has Doubled

ANEW study on change from American climate scientist

James Hansen is not an everyday event. It was Hansen’s appearance at a congressional hearing nearly 40 years ago which put global heating on the front pages.

That resulted in Britain’s prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, making a speech on climate change which attracted worldwide attention. Thatcher was extremely lucky to be briefed by a cabinet secretary, Sir Crispin Tickell, who had carried out his own research on climate change and had a deep understanding of it.

As a result, Thatcher’s speech was in a league of its own. And, though she wobbled thereafter, when scientists began to focus on greenhouse gases, more and more of them became convinced that mankind was causing global heating on a scale which could be extremely dangerous.

It is hard to believe nowadays that so many in industry, business, and the political mainstream were openly sceptical about man-made climate change for so long.

James Hansen is now entering his 84th year. For many years he was with NASA, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration. While still with NASA and after his retirement, Hansen also participated in climate activism and was arrested several times for protesting against fossil fuel development projects.

Now a team led by Hansen has produced new research suggesting that global heating is happening at an even faster rate than was thought.

The study shows that in the last 15 years climate change has picked up speed and is now racing ahead some 50% faster than was the case in the four decades leading up to 2010.

Back in the early years of this century there were climate scientists who asserted that the jury was still out on manmade global warming. In those days, the nay-sayers could still claim to “sceptics”. And much of the debate was about what was predicted by various climate change models.

Later it became more accurate to call the sceptics climate change denialists. And, in the last decade and half, mountains of evidence have stacked up, bearing out many of the most severe predictions made by mainstream

The new study led by Hansen seemed to usher in a new era, in which it appears that global heating is now going more or less out of control. For instance, the outcome of the big climate conference in Paris in 2015 is now looking distinctly outdated.

At the current rate, the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to somewhere between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius, was pretty much dead, suggested Hansen.

According to the publication Inside Climate News, the increased rate of warming “will intensify already deadly heatwaves and worsen both drought and flooding extremes, as well as speeding up the spread of deadly diseases associated with warmer temperatures”.

Last month a meeting was held to discuss the research by Hansen and his team. It was chaired by Jeffrey Sachs, president of the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Sachs strongly backed Jim Hansen’s track record on climate change research and analysis. He said he had spoken with hundreds of climate scientists, and none had been more consistently correct with long-range climate projections than Hansen.

“Jim,” he said, “you’ve scared the wits out of me for 25 years as your colleague, because you’ve told me consistently, ‘It’s worse than we think, and it’s accelerating more rapidly. You warned us what was coming. This new paper is dramatic. Its implications are global. It must be heard by everybody.”

The response to Hansen’s work from a leading British academic is equally troubling. Professor Kevin Anderson, of Manchester University, suggests that the situation is even worse than many feared.

“After decades of half-truths, delusion and outright lies from those in positions of power…” says Anderson, “…we now find ourselves facing severe risks of disastrous outcomes.”

“We are not sleepwalking into the apocalypse, we’re charging toward it with full awareness of what’s at stake.”
