Hey Wayne!

107 years since Duchamp first exhibited a urinal in New York and one might have thought that at this late stage of the game all the taboos in the ART world had been well and truly shattered. But no, it seems even after the YBA’s with their sharks, sheep, unmade beds and copious willies, there are still people happy to get their knickers in a twist about some perceived transgression of artistic norms.

The latest brushman to fall foul is none other than good old John Constable and his painting The Hay Wain, which is being shown as a ‘contested landscape’ at an upcoming exhibition Some critics say the painting conceals a dark secret. Not present in the scene are the poorer workers of the time, many of whom were suffering from hunger and poverty. Incidentally my favourite version of the Hay Wain is the one shown here by Louis Hellman.

Down under In early July, authorities removed a painting in which Jesus and other biblical figures were depicted with Looney Tunes-style faces from a local gallery. The oil painting, entitled Jesus Speaks to the Daughters of Jerusalem, was made by 48-year-old artist Phil James. Local mayor Ned Mannoun said: “The Christian Messiah and the Muslim Messiah Jesus has no connection to the cartoon character Goofy!”

Meanwhile The Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, when she launched a 2023 exhibition Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby, used the display to express their view that Picasso was a “monumentally misogynistic and abusive domestic authoritarian dictator” that “takes up too much space.”

My current favourite Picasso is this Picassoesque version of a 2CV which must be making the execs at Citroen furious that they didn’t get the idea first and apply it to their signature Picasso range.

However it is Banksy who has been stealing the headlines this week. His problem seems not to be offending folk, (although Tory MP James Cleverly was not amused by his crowd surfing inflatable migrant boat stunt at Glastonbury) but trying to get his artworks to stop running off. Of the nine works he has put up this week – one, the wolf on a satellite dish, was nicked in broad daylight before the paint was dry, one was taken down by the contractors whose boards it was on and the fabulous ‘Rhino humping an abandoned Nissan Micra’ was defaced and then the car disappeared.

Still never mind Banky’s long lost second cousin, twice removed has been busy with the spray can at the bottom of Harpers Lane in Presteigne.

Cocktail Therapy

GOOD afternoon, good afternoon, or morning, if you are reading this in the morning, or come to think of it good evening, if you are reading it in the evening and thinking, I am sure this guy must be being paid by the word. No cigar there, alas, more’s the pity.

To business, though. The year is advancing, and it is time to swap what warmth there was in the outside world for an inner warmth, produced ideally by love or enthusiasm, but given the weather and the state of the world more probably by cocktails. So here are some therapeutic recipes for your attention, arranged to carry the sufferer through the day from dawn to dusk.

1. Cup of Tea. Open eyes, grope for radio, happen to hear news. Fail to absorb content of news except for the time check, which says you are late for something or other. Proceed to kettle. Make tea, using tealeaves, milk and sugar to taste (this sounds patronising, and all right, it is. But it is early in the morning, and not everyone is at their best at these moments.) Consume. Stagger into kitchen.

2. Absorb more news. How can anything be this bad? Time to get things in proportion. Mix The Stinker. One part Fernet Branca, one part overhopped IPA, one part Laphroaig. Garnish with week-old mackerel (you can use a goldfish if the mackerel are not in the Lugg just now). Stir. Sip. Reflect that however ghastly the news may be it can’t possibly be as bad as that.

3. The morning wears on. The sun comes out, illuminating the Persian rug with which you have graced the ancient elm floorboards under the south-facing window. Indulge in a moment of pure aesthetic appreciation. Amplify this with a glass of The Total Ponce. 53ml Stokesay Castle craft gin, 102ml El Tonto Mexican cider, Venezuelan swamp bitters to taste, a coffee (not tea) spoonful of Anuka honey liqueur, a sprig of orange blossom grown on a southeast-facing slope exactly 1203 metres above sea level. Add the white of a turtle’s egg. Shake for 37 seconds on a north-south axis and serve in a Lalique porringer. Play Bach, Goldberg Variations until your fingers are sore.

4. If the Goldberg Variations are beyond you, and if this is so I share your pain, with lunch in the offing it is possibly time to investigate the labyrinthine topography of Martiniland. The James Bond model is unfortunately extinct, down to the vanishing from civilisation of Kina Lillet. In less mythic martinis proportions of vermouth to gin vary from the relatively bourgeois one-third-v-to-twothirds-g to the Buñuel Martini: fill a glass with gin, allow the sun to shine through a bottle of martini on to the glassful, remove the bottle and drink the gin. Others like to take such elaborate manoeuvres out of the equation, pouring themselves a glass of gin and waving it in the general direction of Italy before demolishing.

5. One of the difficulties of the climate of the Welsh Marches is of course the lack of the solar ingredient vital

in the surrealist martini. In this case you may feel inclined during the long wastes of the afternoon to indulge in an acceptable substitute, viz. an It is Raining. Take a glass. Half fill with some spirit or other. Hold glass out of window until the downpour dilutes the firewater. Consume. If you need another, it is time to have an It is Bleeding Raining Again – recipe as before. Repeat dose until the rain stops or you can no longer hold the glass.

By now the shades of evening will be gathering and you will be feeling no pain of any kind, possibly because under this furious assault of mixed spirits you have become somewhat deceased. You may awake in a bed not your own, or a ditch. Never mind. All we experts can do is offer advice; it is up to readers to draw their own conclusions. Bung ho, then. Also mud in your eye, here’s how, salud y pesetas. And make that a double.

Hedgerow Hazards

IDON’T think I am especially greedy, but I do admit to enjoying a brief dopamine rush when I find I have acquired something for not much input. It could be a winning long shot on the Grand National, or finding, as I once did, a cigar in a tube in a pocket of a dinner jacket I’d bought in a Cat’s Rescue charity shop, or finding a patch of lush garlic leaves beside a country lane, or a crab apple tree that has conveniently spilt its crop on a grassy verge. I have made jellies containing a dozen flavours from fruits collected in hedgerows. I’ve made salads from Jack-in-thehedge and wild sorrel with which I have fed appreciative guests. Foraging is one pf life’s great freebies, but it can be hazardous. Picking wild mushrooms shouldn’t be done without a serious penchant for risk or a reliable guide (like Ludlow publishers Merlin Unwin’s ‘Mushrooming Without Fear’) to avoid unnecessary fatalities.

However there are much less obvious, more seductive dangers, particularly for those who suffer from a genetic blood condition, hyperuricemia. On a warm day a few weeks ago, by a glittering pond in a flower-filled garden, set amid the honeyed hillocks and meadows of North Herefordshire, now pleasingly Green, I was offered a bowl of strawberries with a soft dollop of artisan ice cream. It was cunningly flavoured with flowers of Meadowsweet, a joyful and uplifting taste. I was enthused at once to learn about the wild flower, which is abundant in damp meadows and verges. The tall plant has distinctive white fluffy flowers, which I soon spotted and stopped to gather on my way home. I plucked off all the tiny frothy white blooms, and put them on a metal tray in a low oven for a few hours before putting the dried flowers into a mortar to grind them to a fine light brown powder. I hadn’t yet decided what I was going to do with this natural flavouring agent, nor was I certain that I had gathered up the right plant (there is scope for confusion here.) A quick Google confirmed that I was dealing with Meadowsweet. I turned to Dr Wiki to find out how I might use it.

Before I got that far, I’d learned that nearly two centuries ago, salicylic acid had been obtained from buds of Meadowsweet, and that this naturally occurring chemical, also found in willow trees (or Sallies as they are still called in the Marches, sixteen centuries after the Romans pulled out) was the basis of what became known as Aspirin – the world’s favourite painkiller. In earlier years I’d been distressingly prone to gout – a direct result of the blood condition, hyperuricemia – and for a while had used aspirin to counteract the pain it causes, until I realised that it seemed to make things worse, and finally, I took the trouble to read the small print on the back of the box: ‘Do not take if you have ever had gout,’ it stated bluntly. Salicylic acid is a proven active trigger for gout.

The evening after consuming the delicious Meadowsweet ice cream I noticed with irritation that I had a warning twinge in my big toe. Overnight the gout was up and running – the Full Monty, as portrayed in James Gilray’s 1799 cartoon – an alarmingly accurate depiction of that brutal condition. Was the pleasure in the taste buds worth the pain in the toe, I wondered. ‘Chacun,’ I concluded, ‘á son gout.’

IT ENDS WITH US (15) – 130 MINS

This screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s somewhat cheesy blockbuster novel succeeds, rather grippingly, by exploring the links between true love and emotional manipulation. The always reliable Blake Lively (THE SHALLOWS) plays flower shop owner, wait for it, Lily Bloom, who just after her hated father’s funeral hooks up with smooch-worthy neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni, who also directed) who just happens to be the brother of her employee/best pal, Allysa (Jenny Slate, the hilarious Tammy in T.V’s BOB’S BURGERS). The chemistry between the threesome, fueled by flashbacks to troubled childhoods, is the gist of Christy Hall’s knowing script as Ryle and Lilly descend into an abusive but mutually dependent romance. There is obvious tension here as we’re willing Lily to, yes, ‘End It’ whilst sympathising with her reluctance to do so, and I’ll leave that cliffhanger here, but the production design, cinematography as well as the acting are well worth the ticket price.

To anyone familiar with the London Evening Standard’s often willfully acerbic arts criticism in the later 20th century, this engaging drama featuring Ian McKellan’s fabulously high-octane performance as the titular, 1930s theatre critic, Jimmy Erskine, will be a delight. His love for theatre patently less than his relish for destroying actors whose performances he faults, the overtly gay – a perilous status back then – Erskine finds himself required to tone down his vitriol when his deceased newspaper’s fascism-inclined owner is replaced by his more emollient son, Viscount Brooke (Mark Strong). Securing the reluctant aid of an actress he’d previously excoriated, Nina Land (Gemma Arterton, never better), Erskine plans to ensnare the somewhat wimpy Brooke to his advantage, a high-risk strategy indeed. Patrick Marber’s first major script since his equally intense NOTES ON A SCANDAL is a joy and director Anand Tucker (HILARY AND JACKIE) encourages his fine cast to pull no punches.

Cotto, Hereford

MR P celebrated his birthday by taking his habitual morning stroll when, tripping on a stone on the rocky track near his home, he pitched forward like a tree being felled and hit the rough ground full on his face and knees. He hauled himself to his feet, bloody-faced and lame. No doubt the regulars of the Blood Bay in Ludlow would have cheered at the sight, but once he’d staggered home, his Lovely Companion warmly ministered to him, doing her best to dab away the carnage. Even more, she whisked him off for a celebratory lunch at The Bridges Inn, on the western flank of the Long Mynd.

This is a pub that has been adopted and lovingly enhanced by a local family who also own Linley Hall and its productive walled garden, which supplies most of the delicious vegetables served in the pub. Since Mr P was last there, when he reviewed it for the Woolly Organ, a lot of work has been done to the fabric of the place. To Mr P’s delight, unlike the re-ordering of many formerly characterful boozers, it hasn’t been destroyed – far from it, the wonderful ambience remains. It is sympathetically furnished with comfortable, authentic country furniture, and the food is better than ever. It’s pleasing that the owners have obviously thought about what their punters want to eat, and the best way to serve it. The lunch menu (Wednesday to Sunday) has a stimulating choice of small (and large) plates that almost any rambler could afford and a sophisticated eater might relish. Mr P had a terrine of pork and venison that was especially good, and the LC was chuffed with her charcuterie and a roast chicken salad. With a pint of Oracle, Mr P could not have had a better birthday lunch, despite his knackered knees and battered visage.

But The Bridges is not the subject of this month’s review. Mr Pernickety and his musician friend, the Wrinkle Rocker trundled down the A49 to Hereford to eat at a place called Cotto, opposite the Green Dragon in Broad Street. Mr P had spotted its presence as the superior eatery on site at the Hay Festival, a place apart from the great noshing hall where all the fast-fooders were and he and the LC ate.

But seeing that there was a new Italian in town, which wasn’t part of a chain like Ask, where the dishes are prepared in a factory somewhere, transported to the

‘outlet’ and stuck in a microwave oven, he was eager to try it. Good Italian food can easily be as exciting as the hautiest of French cuisine, often more robust and characterful. In Hereford, Italian family restaurants are already well represented by Ponte Vecchio – but competition is always good. The narrow frontage of Cotto belies its depth. There is a functioning bar at the front where Camparis and Negronis can be taken before dinner, leading through to what, on a Friday evening was a properly heaving restaurant. Encouraged by this, Mr P and the WR were shown to the only empty table a long way into the place. They sat and looked around, happy in anticipation. There was good feel, a murmur of appreciative eaters rather than shrieking hen parties. Unlike most eating places, the music playing in Cotto matched its ambience – tenors, mandolins and amore. Mr P and the WR perused the promisingly brief menu, sure that it must change all the time, offering several adventurous and less familiar dishes. Mr P felt he would like to have a go at everything but settled to start with smoked salmon and mackerel croquettes – a good blend of fish and beautifully prepared. The WR had Calamari Fritti with aubergine fries. He remarked that the aubergine fries could have been firmer but munched away happily. His next course was a Herefordshire-farmer’s-sized serving of nduja Risotto and scallops. ‘Nduja is a spicy, spreadable pork sausage from Calabria. The risotto was, the WR said between mouthfuls, an especially well-flavoured risotto and the scallops were a bonus. However, not being a Herefordshire farmer, he couldn’t clear the plate. Mr P enjoyed his breaded Chicken Milanese a great deal, with its warm tomato salad. – a well prepared, classic Italian dish, with which he drank a glass of chunky fruity Barbera.

To complete their dinner, they shared a tiramisu –always a reliable gauge, and didn’t find it wanting. They noted that apart from the fish, everything came either from Italy or Herefordshire. Finishing the tiramisu, they smacked their lips and agreed that they’d had a proper Italian dinner, served by lovely staff who seemed to convey the enthusiasm of the family behind the restaurant. They’d enjoyed it easily enough to come again and to recommend it to their friends.

The Reporter, by R. Francis

WRITING is a small world; so is publishing. Chances are, if you read reviews, the reviewer knows the author, or knows someone who knows the author. On the rare occasions that a reviewer faces up to this, it seldom goes well. Julie Burchill (remember her?) once recommended her ‘Christmas reads’ and admitted that all the books she’d picked were by friends. She got in a great deal of hot water, but all she’d needed to do was not say anything. It’s the honesty that is the trouble. If you are Private Eye readers, you might read the anonymous ‘Books and Bookmen’ column, with its often excoriating reviews of new books; I know who writes this column, and regard them as an ally. A major literary critic is a very good pal of mine; I blush when they give me a good review, but I’m assured that they always mean it. What’s more, I’m with a small indie publisher, who have just been taken over by a larger, but still independent publisher. I would never dream of giving a fellow September/Duckworth author a bad review – just as well, because two of them live in Presteigne. And so on.

So I could just tell you how much I love The Reporter by R. Francis, and have a high percentage of Broad Sheep readers raise their eyebrows; or I could own up to our long friendship. If you are asked to review a pals book, and you hate it, you should tell them that it’s interesting, but you are unable to say a word because of your personal integrity. If you love it lots, and are writing a review for the Times, for example, you can get away with it. But for Broad Sheep? Rachel Francis was for many years the Green correspondent for this august organ, and is a trusted friend. We met in Devon on a writing workshop, twenty years ago. We moved to Presteigne at pretty much the same time, we wrote plays together, we stayed in touch when she moved back to Devon, and when she dedicates this wonderful book to her family and her dog, I have to face up to the fact that I’m very fond of both her family, and her dog. But I wasn’t prepared to let anyone else do a review, because Rachel is a really wonderful and unique writer, whether or not we are old pals, and I wanted to say this aloud.

The Reporter concerns the arrival of a new journalist at a local newspaper in Mid-Devon. Abel is of indigenous Australian descent, and knows something of what it is to lose your land. He’s sent to investigate the disappearance of an Exmoor woman, Olive Gladfield, which is, shall we say, not unrelated to the arrival of a giant agri-business corporate on the moor. It’s an exciting story, well told, but that’s not why I’m here to rant about Rachel Francis. She is, in my view, one of the best fiction writers about contemporary rural existence, about the farming life, about the countryside. Dan Brown might have exciting stories, but he couldn’t write

bum on a wall. Story (and, as I say, this is a great story), is not everything, far from it. Rachel is a really special writer. Listen to this – ‘By May, the lanes around South Town are green and the swallows swoop down the high street and there’s a pair of dippers fishing under the bridge again. In the evening, bats fly over your head, so close you can feel the beat of their wings and on a Sunday morning, early and before the traffic starts, the air is clean even in the town.’ That’s sentence making, that is. So clean and clear. Read it aloud as it is written, and know that there is something special going on.

Rachel describes one of her characters as coming from a punk hippy rebel background, which perfectly describes Rachel Francis herself. Rather than jump through the hoops of agents and publishers, she chooses to self-publish. As the punks used to say of putting out a record, it was cheap, it was easy, go and do it. But please don’t let this put you off. It is as good as anything being published today. She needs a wide readership, not just her friends, and family. And dog.

Just Stop OilDraconian Sentences, but Silence from Starmer

WHEN vicious jail sentences were handed down to five climate activists in late July, I expected to hear something resembling a cry of protest from the government or, at least, from leading figures in the Labour Party. But there was only a deafening silence from Keir Starmer and his ministers.

Surely the very least one might have hoped for was some kind of pledge from Number Ten to look at the law, or a promise to usher in stronger protection in future for the rights of peaceful protesters. But what did we get from the Labour leadership? Zilch!

And so, even as the jails are full to overflowing with real criminals, five peaceful demonstrators, three of them women, will spend years behind bars in a ludicrously severe crackdown on those who campaign for the planet and for the air we breathe.

Four of the group are being banged up for four years, the fifth for five years. It has been left to Amnesty International, Liberty and Greenpeace to speak up against the sentences.

In an open letter to the Attorney General, 1200 celebrities, scientists and others expressed their alarm at the severity of the jail terms. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders, Michel Forst, also spoke of his concern.

Forst noted that the five had been prosecuted under a very recent law, brought in by the last Tory administration. It is the Police, Crime, Sentences and Courts Act of 2022. Forst said that, prior to that legislation, “…it had been almost unheard of since the 1930s for members of the public to be imprisoned for peaceful protest in the UK.”

The UN man continued, “I am therefore seriously concerned by these regressive new laws.”

As a British citizen, to me it is humiliating that it takes a UN rapporteur to bang the drum for our human rights simply because Starmer and his fellow ministers are too apathetic to put their heads above the parapet and express dissent.

By contrast, the ousted Tory leader, Rishi Sunak, was only too keen for his government to be credited with supplying the measure used in the crackdown. He is reported as boasting that this very recent law had practically been drafted by the right-leaning Policy Exchange think tank.

And where does Policy Exchange get the funds to support this kind of activity? Just Stop Oil claims on its website that Policy Exchange has a support group

in the USA which, a few years ago, received tens of thousands of dollars from the oil and gas major, Exxon Mobil.

What about the motivation of the demonstrators? How did they explain themselves in court? They were not allowed to. His Honour Judge Hehir, hearing the case, imposed a blanket ban on the defendants and their lawyers preventing them making any mention of the climate crisis.

If they had been allowed to explain their actions, what might they have said? On the Just Stop Oil website, one of the protesters, Paul Bell, says, “…in my PhD I spent time studying the impacts of the climate crisis…Every day I learn more about this crisis.

“And I understand how vast is the gap between a safe future and the nightmare we are heading towards. Scientists must sound the alarm. We cannot continue quietly letting the UK government twist our words and ignore our warnings…”

His fellow activist Gaie Delap expressed her anguish over causing motorists to be stuck in traffic jams on motorways. “It hurts me,” she says. “I’m sorry I had to do this. But we really have no other option. They didn’t listen to the scientists. They didn’t listen to their constituents, so we had to cause disruption, in order to communicate humanity’s predicament.”

I know people who reject that view and who believe that bringing traffic to a standstill could be counterproductive. But, in my view, if demonstrators are to be hauled into court and deprived of their liberty for years then the very least the authorities can do is to hear their explanations and at least be aware of how the law is being used against a non-violent civil resistance group, as Just Stop Oil describes itself.
