Macadam meets the locals

B

ACK in the early 70’s I went on a two week holiday to a very quiet little Balearic Island called Ibiza and then look what happened. Twenty years later the whole joint went crazy. Then, when I moved to the Borders, I hung around Hay-on-Wye for a few years. At the time this dingy little washed up market town had not a single cafe or restaurant, just a few dusty old bookshops. Then look what happened. I once briefly had a flat in Golborne Road, Notting Hill when Hugh Grant was still in short trousers - enough said. You see the thread that’s running through all these stories. My mere prescence has a dramatic effect on the desirability of any location. I’m a sort of one-man upcycling machine. I don’t have to mess around with funny beards, weird sorts of coffee or tortoise shell specs. I’m that rare phenomenon, a natural born, untrained, organic trendsetter. Of course it took me a few years to realise that I had this talent, but now that I’ve cottoned on I’ve started selling my skills to the highest bidder and I’m going to specialise in towns on the Borders. So if you live in some boring little dump that’s just had it’s primary school closed lost its last shop and the pub’s full of charmless old codgers discussing the price of cattle feed, call me up and I’ll come and do a bit of trendsetting then before you know it the place will be overflowing with tapas bars and micro breweries. My first proper upscale was Talgarth. Five years ago when they called me in, half the shops were boarded up and the poor disenchanted populace were pacing around the streets in the rain. All it needed were a couple of visits from me, a word or two dropped in the right ears and now look look at the results. There is Talgarth Mill with it’s super-trendy cafe and Watermilled Stoneground Bakery. W.J. George, the traditional builder has opened a new delicatessen and Alan McGee (?) has bought the Tabernacle and turned it into a spanking new venue showcasing some of the best cover bands around. There is also a nice new gastro pub on the way, so now the locals are strutting up and down the street whistling Oasis tunes in bright sunshine - what a difference and all thanks to me! More recently I was asked to have a bash at Llandod, but after a quick recce, I thought it was probably best if I didn’t bite off more than I could chew, but I can now reveal what I have been working up to for the last six months. You’re not gonna believe this but I have decided to make Hereford trendy. Yes, you read that right, Hereford. Yes, that ungainly lump of bricks and concrete we all try only to go to on Christmas Eve when all other ideas for presents have failed, I’m gonna make it into the Shoreditch of the West. Already my vibes are having some pretty extraordinary effects. As you have probably noticed, some kind person has got rid of that smelly old cattle market and given us a nice new Waitrose instead. The big church in the middle has given God the day off and is serving up some cracking good food. The tapas bars are all over town like a rash (I’m particularly partial to the Manchego and Serrano ham croquettes at the Old Bridge). Both The Beefy Boys and Rule of Tum are knocking out gourmet burgers like there is no tomorrow (see page 22). A fortnight ago I helped run a gig for French street performer Macadam Piano at the newly resurgent Left Bank and to publicise the gig we had a quick spin round town at lunchtime and there is some good news and some bad. High Town was buzzing, what with the pavement coffee outlets, the market stalls and three; yes, three different lots of buskers plying their trade. But sadly a lot of the population are still not actually dancing in the street. Macadam Piano is quite extraordinary and spins round and drives itself while Jean Louis plays beautiful music, it’s quite a sight. However, a good 75% of the population scurried past with faces averted, perhaps thinking that the crazy Frenchman might jump off his piano stool and assault them. Anyway the other 25% got into the swing of things and (as is the modern way) whipped out their camera phones and got filming. So there you have it, my job in Hereford is nearly finished and there is no point in moaning that you liked it the way it was. You need to buckle down and get with the programme. Maybe you could start a little shop selling stoneground cupcakes or some other nonsense. No hang on, here is an idea, an Indian Chai stall that also sells fixed wheel bikes. Ding!! Remember you heard it here first.

cinema IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF HOLLYWOOD Since this mighty organ majors on healing the troubled soul, it’s fortuitous that this month finds three fine music-based flicks. The first is the unhappily–titled RICKI & THE FLASH, and although director Jonathan Demme made possibly rock’s greatest ever performance movie, STOP MAKING SENSE, here his fictional fading guitar heroine Ricki Rendazzo (66 year-old Meryl Streep, oddly convincing) abandons her perpetual touring to soothe grown-up daughter Julie (played by actual daughter, Mamie Gummer) whose engagement has abruptly ended. But like her entire family, including an harassed ex-hubby (Kevin Kline), Julie has abandonment issues, not helped by one of the backing band (real-life popstar Rick Springfield) wanting to bed her mum. Written by the maverick Diablo Cody (JUNO) and conducted with typical aplomb by Demme, it’s a bittersweet, often hilarious family reunification saga, with a great soundtrack.

The Choir

Ricki & The Flash

A different music in a (very) different kitchen provides the narrative spine for THE CHOIR where following his boozy, single mother’s fatal car crash, 11 year-old Stet (talented newcomer Garrett Wareing) reluctantly agrees to attend an elite choral college thanks to the efforts of his rundown school’s headmistress (Debra Winger). Recognising Stet’s natural talent, the college’s brusque choirmaster (Dustin Hoffman) submits Stet to a regime of harsh discipline, whilst Stet’s lowly background prompts much bullying from his classmates. Only the world-weary headmistress (Kathy Bates) champions the boy who also must reconcile an unexpected reunion with his wealthy, absentee father (Josh Lucas). Canadian director Francois Girard has form here with THE RED VIOLIN and his latest exhibits a canny empathy for his characters and subject matter.

During 2010-2013, Pink Floyd’s co-founder and main songwriter, guitarist/bassist Roger Waters, toured The Wall Live, an extraordinary, multi-media experience based on the band’s 1979 concept album about a rock star teetering on the edge of madness, haunted by the wartime death of his absentee father, who decided to literally wall himself off from his demons. The tour involved state-of-the-art digital projection, Gerald Scarfe’s acerbic animations and the gradual erection of a giant wall. Regretting that he’d not filmed some of his previous, almost equally ambitious solo tours, Water explains that, “there was no question that we would make a cinematic document of the work Roger Waters The Wall that we did over the last five years.” As well as proving an emotive visual condemnation of war itself, ROGER WATERS THE WALL peppers concert footage with scenes which serve as a kind of road movie chronicling Waters’ efforts to reconcile his past mistakes and moral dilemmas. And of those three aren’t enough, also newly released are the excellent and moving documentary AMY (Winehouse), LONDON ROAD, a filmed version of the stage musical about the Ipswich prostitutes murders and DANNY COLLINS, another tale of a faded, screwed-up rockstar, starring Al Pacino. The Burger Shop, Hereford

M

ANY years ago, when Mr Pernickety first found himself living in Marcher country, he always enjoyed a visit to the old Hereford Livestock Market, and indeed bought his first half-dozen grey speckled Marans hens there for 70p each. They went on to deliver large, brown speckled eggs steadily, if not plentifully, for years, encouraged, no doubt, by his sung exhortation every morning (like Bob Dylan’s): ‘Lay, ladies, lay; lay a dozen big brown eggs’. When the livestock market moved to its new, traffic-friendly site out of town, he was sorry to see it go. He was even more sorry when a gang of developers, chartered surveyors and no doubt a few Hereford ‘businessmen’ got together to make a pile of money out of a surprising number of gullible multiple retailers by persuading them to open branches to cater for an increased flow of punters that was never going to materialise. And in doing so, of course, they plunged a dagger deep into the already dicky ticker of the old town of Hereford, now dressed in a gloomy cloak of To Let signs and empty shop-fronts. No less than ten new multiples eateries were seduced into an unattractive, bland development such as you could find in any of a thousand dreary homogenised town centres throughout the country. And every one of these eateries is equally characterless, cynically overpriced and seriously depressing to eat in. But Herefordshire folk are resilient and, when roused, can be unexpectedly resourceful; they are fighting back. One notable recent arrival is the Shack Revolution, housed in what was one of Mr P’s favourite old hunting grounds, the former Dinosaur Market in Bastion Mews. Skilfully (and economically) decorated with discarded wooden pallets, and serving apple-based (this is Herefordshire) cocktails, craft beers and ciders, and freshly made pizzas, it looks purpose built for the hordes of students that may one day throng the streets of Hereford. Mr P and his daughter happily sampled a cocktail and a Snails Bank cider but were unable to eat a pizza as they had just eaten lunch at another notable new eatery in the heart of old Hereford. The Rule of Tum Burger Shop is in Aubrey Street, behind the Green Dragon. Despite its punning moniker, the Burger Shop looked promising as soon as Mr P and Miss P walked in. Tables and benches constructed of what looks like recycled scaffold board and square section iron tube have a joyous, knocked together look that flies in the face of the hideous multiples in the Old Market ‘Mall’. There is an inviting outside area, too, with similar rustic furniture. But it was a blazing hot day, there were no parasols, and Mr P is too wise to sit out and eat in the full glare of the sun.

22

The range of burgers on offer is imaginative but not excessive. Miss P had a Farmer Tom’s Beef Burger with lots of ‘lovely things’ added, and shared with her father a bowl of top-notch Rosemary Salted Chips (with their crunchy, healthy skins still attached) and a

pleasing Celeriac Slaw. Mr P, always attracted to the less obvious, chose a Pulled Ryeland Lamb Burger. This choice was made in the knowledge that the Ryeland sheep was bred for its wool, not its meat, which has a slight tendency to fattiness. However, that at least makes it suitable for the long cooking which pulled meat requires, presumably rendering it more suitable for burgerfication, but he would like to have tried a Welsh Hill Lamb Burger. The burger arrived at Mr P’s table wrapped in a sheet of greaseproof paper, without utensils. Mr P isn’t averse to moderness, (although he draws the line at drinking beer straight from the bottle), however he has always found eating main meals with his hands an unedifying, often messy business – and so it proved with unacceptable quantities of the burger’s filling of pickled red pepper, onion, garlic mayo, mint pesto, leaves and brioche spurting out from the bun at each bite and landing on his freshly laundered (dark) red cotton trousers. Small plastic knives and forks were offered, but weren’t much help. The burger was, in every other respect, a triumph, and worth searching for, but the option of a warm plate and sharp knife would have been good. To drink, Mr P chose a delicious Hearstease Apple & Rhubarb pressé, while Miss P had their elderflower. Being from London town, in her 20s and not yet a millionaire, she is an expert on burgers, and rated hers at the Burger Shop at least on a par with those served by Honest Burgers in Brixton. She then insisted on having a Nutty Chocolate Brownie while Mr P asked for a cup of coffee, but they don’t serve it. Mr P’s irritation at this was swiftly quelled by the mouthful of rich, moist, delicious brownie which his daughter offered him. The ambience is chilled (as Miss P would have it), the music right, and the staff attractive and intelligent – at no point ordering Mr P to ‘ENJOY!’, thank God. Mr P left feeling well-fed, delighted to find such a place materialising in an unpromising back street of old Hereford. You’d certainly not find anything like it in the red-brick anonymity of the Old Market Shopping Mall. www.misterpernickety.com
