The Stranger in the Cellar

HEY say that the tastes, sights, sounds and sensations of childhood are the ones that stay with you and influence everything you do in later life. My mum, despite being the smartest person I’ve ever met wasn’t really much of a cook. So apart from eggy bread with Marmite, I don’t really have any hankerings for the food of my youth. However, other early influences have stuck. My parents rather limited record collection contained some gems that have stayed with me - Mahalia Jackson; that fantastic sliding clarinet note at the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue; Debussy’s Claire de Lune; and a strange South African Township jazz musical about a boxer called King Kong. From dad I learnt how to buy really interesting vintage cars and then leave them in the garage with the engine half dismantled till they became worthless heaps of junk. But the thing that has had the biggest influence on me was the Cellar Club. I guess it must have been 1963. My school mate’s band was a rather tame affair called ‘The Strangers’, much given to pale blue cardigans with dark blue piping and feeble attempts to do the Shadows walk while playing. ‘Walk don’t Run’. Then we fell in with a couple of bad boys, Paul Johnson and Barry Jackson, all black polo-necks and Anello & Davide Beatle boots. We got a new name and a new set (Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters) and Barry even had a girlfirend! But best of all, Paul’s dad was the vicar at St James’ and St James’ had a cellar. It wasn’t a very big cellar and it was very low and it had two foot wide brick piers, every six feet and a mud floor, but nonetheless it was tailor made for teenage mayhem. It was our very own Cavern Club. The first Friday we opened, some friends came and we played crouching down on the raised mud bit (only five feet to the ceiling) and it was great. The next Friday, the whole bloody world turned up. We were gobsmacked and didn’t really know what to do. We had a hit on our hands, but the cellar was so small there was no way of getting everyone in. The third week, Paul’s big brother, Mick and a few blokes made an attempt at running the door, but it only ended in punch ups and on the fourth week Paul’s dad closed us down. Ever since then, I’ve been looking for a replacement. Friends get fed up with me sizing up their basements, railway arches, caves, anything I need to recreate the Cellar Club or at least something like it, preferably in a dank, dark hole. I briefly ran a music venue in the Hat Shop basement, but not only couldn’t you swing a cat, you couldn’t even squash a kitten in there once the musicians were set up. I tried it downstairs at Wyeside, ‘The Hoodoo Voodoo Club’, but as most of the punters came from Presteigne, Llandrindod or Hay-on-Wye, I used to suffer dreadful pangs Small Ads 4 of anxiety every fortnight sitting on the steps at 7.30pm wondering if anyone was Sam’s page 6 gonna turn up. That being said, it was, and is, a fantastic venue. Anyway, it’s been 50 years now and I’ve never stopped searching for my Art 8 subterranean ideal. Then just before Christmas I had a ‘Road to Discoed moment’. Art workshops 10 The clouds parted and a voice said ‘Stop grubbing around in people’s basements, Cinema 16 look up and you will find what you seek’. And lo and behold there was the PrestDance 20 eigne Assembly Rooms with it’s new bar, perfect acoustics and fantastic sound Food 22 and lighting. The perfect venue on the first floor had been there all the time, but what to call Music 24 it? Then the voice in the clouds said ‘It’s Sunday, you’d better hurry home quick Music workshops 30 or you’ll miss Downton Abbey’. And sure enough half way through they featured Band directory 32 a very unsavoury club called The Velvet Violin - described by Radio Times as an Theatre 34 ‘illicit underground joint full of spivs and strumpets’. That sounds exactly the ticket. Word 38 By the time you read this you’ll have missed the first one, but never mind there are plenty more coming down the track. Wak Wak Joss Croft, Marketing Director of Visit England, thinks it would be a good idea if Cotswold villages were renamed so they became more attractive to Chinese tourists. Story in the Gloucestershire Echo.

HAT Tuesday, as on most Tuesdays since 1307, Riverwell was drowsing in its honey-coloured Cotswold calm. Suddenly the quacking of the ducks in the pond on the ancient village green was drowned by the howl of engines. A coach with smoked glass windows screeched to a halt in front of the pub. The doors burst open, and eighty Chinese people got out and started taking selfies with Mrs Bodenham, who ran the village shop till they opened the Aldi in Bibury. ‘Where we?’ cried a Fukienese in a baseball hat. ‘Riverwell,’ said Mrs Bodenham, not liking it but very polite. The Fukienese frowned. ‘Hah,’ he said, and uttered a curious gargling noise which was taken up by the rest of the busload. Suddenly they looked gloomy. All of them shuffled onto the coach, which drove away. ‘What,’ said Mrs Bodenham, ‘was that about?’ ‘Loss of face down to inability to pronounce UK rural placenames,’ said her daughter. ‘Something must be done or the tourist renmimbi will be gone from us forever.’ So the daughter rang a friend at Cotsflog, the local tourist board. A week later the Riverwell village sign came down, to be replaced by a new one. This read Dak Dak, and the coach tours loved it. Stow changed its name to Rip Hof, Bourton on the Water to Mud Bum. Soon the renmimbi were hip deep and rising. This bold initiative did not escape the attention of the Hereford tourism authorities. Much Birch became Wak Wak, and so on. The major roads were clogged with coaches, and few villages were spared a throng of newly confident Chinese tourists happily taking selfies with pissed-off rustics. The trend spread with the vigour of a new flu. The Red Lion, which had been nearly empty of tourists, changed its name to the Grug Grug Inn and was almost instantly thronged with Chinese people sicking up cider over each other. The craze headed west. Then one day the inhabitants of Presteigne aka Hips Vil woke up, prepared for another day shovelling renmimbi, and found the streets empty. There was about ten minutes of silence, then an odd sound, as of many engines. All over the Welsh Marches, coaches came streaming out of the hills heading for Heathrow. Suddenly there were no Chinese tourists anywhere. A tour guide reeled out of one of the buses, which left without him. ‘Doomed,’ said the guide. ‘Totally doomed.’ ‘What happened?’ said Mrs Preece from behind the bar of the Grug Grug.’ ‘We were heading west,’ said the guide. ‘The driver was Welsh. He had a sort of an elliptical fit, and he drove through the night raving about authenticity, and as the sun rose we found ourselves driving out of the mountains and crossing a bridge and coming to a halt

by a little station. And the punters looked out of the bus window, and the sign said Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogeryc hwyrndrobwllllantysiliogog-ogoch. And someone read it out, and the tourists said, so change the name, and the driver said, it has already been changed in eighteen sixty something to make this place more tourist friendly, so say it, you reptiles, or the hell with you. And the passengers said, well, that’s it, so far and no further, enough, we’re off home. And they out with their phones and told their friends, and they’ve gone. All of them.’ ‘Ah, well,’ said Mrs Preece, ‘there’s more to life than money, isn’t it?’ And she went to hang up the old Red Lion sign again. We shook our heads, of course. BIG EYES (12A) Chalk drawn knock-offs on black velvet were sold door-to-door in their thousands by hippie charlatans in the ‘60s, but the teary waifs with bulging eyes were originally the work of American artist Wa l t e r K e a n e ( C h r i s t o p h Wa l t z , CARNAGE) who for years was the world’s best-selling painter. Except that they weren’t. In fact his submissive wife Margaret (Amy Adams, AMERICAN HUSTLE) was the actual artist, a secret she hid even from her daughter Jane (Madeleine Arthur). Eventually weary of the humiliation by her charismatic, fame-hungry spouse, Margaret won a spectacular court case leaving him a broken alcoholic. LEVIATHAN (15) This powerful drama from Cannes’ winner Andrey Zvyagintsev (ELENA, THE BANISHMENT) begins in a dilapidated port on the Barents Sea where Nikolai, a hard-drinking mechanic, his long-suffering wife and Nikolai’s truculent son struggle to keep their home which the corrupt mayor wants to bulldoze and replace with a fancy dacha. Hope emerges when a handsome ex-army pal turned lawyer arrives to aid their cause and in the process expose the mayor’s extensive corruption, but being a Zvyagintsev film and cowritten by frequent collaborator Oleg Negin, things take several unexpected turns, mostly reflecting the more venal aspects of human nature. That said, LEVIATHAN’s thinly disguised contempt for Russian political culture is bravely ironic given that it was co-funded by the Putin government!

BIRDMAN (15) Unquestionably this writer’s best film of 2014 – which is when he saw it! – this’ll probably take some beating in 2015. Michael Keaton, who hasn’t made a big film since BATMAN or a great one since BEETLEJUICE, makes a glorious comeback with art imitating life as a washed-up ex-superhero actor, the titular BIRDMAN, who on the eve of a Broadway play he’s also producing loses his co-star and faces mounting disasters including bankruptcy. Enter Edward Norton as a cocky but box-office friendly method actor and suddenly we’re on an accelerating rollercoaster involving a fantastic ensemble cast including Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, Andrea Risborough and Lindsey Duncan. But Mexican director Alejandro González Iñarritu (AMORES PERROS) and his cameraman Emmanuel Lubezki are arguably the stars here for BIRDMAN appears as one continuous (119 minute!) take, although in fact it was 29 takes, which compared with the hundreds that comprise most movies, gives it an exhilarating and involving realism. The Bennetts End Inn

WO Ludlow premises have changed hands recently, to be operated by a small local three man band called ludlowinns.co.uk. The lease of The Wine Bar, formerly Ego’s in Quality Square, has passed to them from the hands of Mr Floyd Wilson-Lloyd, while the name is reverting, inexplicably, to Ego’s – always pretty meaningless, and certainly unattractive. The same small group have also taken on the lease of the Wheatsheaf, by the Broad Gate. The Wheatsheaf was always an attractive little pub, but suffered in Mr P’s view from being owned by Marston’s, one of the major brewers of industrial effluent whose product he could drink only while holding his nose, as well as from serving dishes like Lasagne’n’chips, and other obesity-related gut-stuffers, besides being tended by a barman of such little erudition that, when informed by Mr P that the late Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia had played draughts in the bar there while sojourning nearby with Wilfred Thesiger during WWII, he claimed never to have heard of Jah Rastafari or the Lion of the Tribe of Judah! On the face of it there’s no great improvement in the bar staff, and they have yet to circumvent the tie that imposes Marstons’ vile beers on their drinkers, which will certainly keep Mr P away. However on the strength of the dinner Mr P sampled recently at The Bennett’s End Inn, which the trio also operate, the food should be very good indeed. As the Bennett’s End website somewhat erratically puts it, the place is in a fine setting on the south flank of Clee Hill. It’s about ten minutes’ drive from the middle of Ludlow, some way down the Hope Bagot Lane out of Knowbury. On a wet blustery Wednesday night, Mr P and his Lovely Companion set out with their friends, the former Shoe Magnets (one of whom is now entertaining the idea of a late thespian career, having appeared recently as Saint Nicholas at his granddaughter’s school Christmas party). Even on such a dank night, the pub was welcoming and pleasingly unpretentious, not so say downright rustic (in a good way). It looks as if people have been adding bits to the ancient boozer for the last three hundred years, and it has ended up a cosy warren of small bars and rooms. Like a lot of country pubs, it doesn’t open at lunchtime during the week, although Mr P imagines it can get very busy for Saturday and Sunday lunch. It’s open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Mr P’s party settled themselves at a table in the main bar, close to a fire that roared and went some way to combating the draught wafting through from other, emptier parts of the building. The pint of Hobson’s Best with which Mr P kicked off was obviously well-kept and as hoppily delicious as he has ever tasted it. This immediately put him in a receptive frame of mind and helped him cope with the disappointment that he hadn’t noticed in the pub’s advertisement in the Ludlow Ledger that they offer a three course short menu for £15, if ordered between 6 and 7pm, for which his party had arrived too late. The standard menu has been devised with a good spread of interesting dishes. Between them the

party started with a Soup – spicy chicken – which smelt very good in a baby tureen; a Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, with which Mr P and the LC could find no fault – light, fluffy, not over-cheesy, while one of the former Shoe Magnets in a spirit of nostalgia ordered a prawn cocktail which was attractively presented with what appeared to be a false ginger moustache on top but turned out to be a delicious portion of dressed crab. The starters were served with little mini wholemeal loaves which Mr P judged not quite as fresh as they might have been. For her main course, the LC ordered a rare rump steak. She likes it saignent, but made her usual mistake of not making it clear just how saignent. Mr P had a mouthful and found it at least ‘rare’ and very succulent. For his own main course he ordered a Chicken Kiev, having ascertained that it was made in house and not pre-prepared by Messrs Brake Bros, and so it undoubtedly proved, with the unmistakable flavour of real chicken – not the cotton wool of the broiler unit. For the others, the Smoked Haddock, supplied by Ludlow’s Fish House and served with a poached egg and spring onion mashed potato, delivered 100% of what it offered, while the Pork Steak on Mash evoked only praise from the former Santa Claus. These dishes ranged in price from £11.95 for the Chicken Kiev to £15.95 for the Steak – not at all out of the way for the quality of the ingredients and the skill with which they had been cooked by Kelvin Woodfield. Following this with a couple of puddings – Lemon Tart with Raspberry Sorbet and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream – Mr P’s party couldn’t think of negative thing to say about the food beyond the very minor cavil over the freshness of the bread. They had also drunk a bottle or so of Finca Temperanilla, which satisfied the former Shoe Magnets who live in a vine-growing area of Spain and think they know a thing or two. At £14.95, Mr P was quite happy with it. The music was discreet and appropriate – quiet blues and stuff. Service was intelligent and helpful, and no-one ordered the party to “Enjoy!” anything. Some of the tables would benefit from having the tacky old pub-style shiny lacquer stripped off, and the padding on the seat of the pew on which Mr P perched wasn’t very thick. While the fire kept going, the party was comfortable but the female members began to grumble a little as it died down and the cold air began to move in. But these are insignificant complaints of what is a

really exemplary country pub, where simply drinking a couple of pints with a single dish would be very rewarding. grass roots Stories for 2015 “It isn’t like a lecture: it’s like a conversation. There’s a back-and-forthness about it” Philip Pullman. Scheherazade In a story that frames the 1001 Stories of the Arabian Nights, a Sultan is incensed by the infidelity of his wife. In his jealousy, he decides to avenge his wife by “taking” a virgin girl each night and then cutting off her head the next morning. But just as the supply of virgins has been pretty much exhausted, Princess Scheherazade turns up. Scheherazade is totally smart, for which the sultan is ill prepared. She begins to tell an adventure story, set in a world of magic carpets and genies and the Sultan is entranced by it. Day after day he allows Scheherazade to live, always in anticipation of the next story. And so it is that, after telling all the stories of the Arabian Nights, Scheherazade survives. Story, whether real or imagined, is a powerful medium. The Arabian Nights originate from the wonderful story telling tradition of desert nomads, later written into Persian manuscript, much later translated into European languages and even more recently turned into an unprecedented number of pantomimes. These rich stories are set in the Eastern countries that we now know as Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Israel, Syria, and Egypt.

community led “Household Energy Service” (HES) that would go on to advise a large number of households on ways to reduce fossil fuel use. Part of this work was to put together a regular newsletter. The newsletter updated people on available grants – for example for better home insulation and drew attention to local services – for example solar panel fitters. A popular addition to these newsletters became known amongst us as people stories. We invited over 1,000 people who had already engaged with HES to write about how they were rolling up their sleeves and cutting fossil fuel use. Each true story explored the realities of changing - the highs and lows of travelling the world by train, the problems encountered when choosing insulation for a leaky church roof, the joys of cycling to work on an electric bike or turning a poorly insulated ex-council house into a snug eco home with solar water heater and a wood burner. By the time the 3rd quarterly newsletter was being compiled, people stories were flooding in at a rate of knots. Back-and-Forthness I left Lightfoot in 2010 to set up a small writing agency. These days I work on a wide range of communications and marketing projects within the “green sector”. In reality, this covers anything from sustainable re-design and new technologies, to local social enterprise and community activity. The green sector is both timeless and also inherently modern. Sometimes known as “good” business, in green business, drivers such as profit and consumer freedom are re-balanced by long term view and wider considerations. This implies a need for knowledge and also creativity to bring about change where needed. The green sector is a wonderful arena to work in. When it comes to communicating, the old onedimensional “marketing push” to sell stuff or tell people what to do is sort of outdated really. A large part of its downfall was social media, providing everybody with a new platform for exchange. Philip Pullman’s concept of back and forthness is pretty spot on, taking elemental communication back closer to its roots, returning to us just a taste of those dark connected evenings when our ancestors exchanged stories around the fire. Or if you want me to put it into snazzy language of the Internet seers: communications is now interactive, immersive and socially connected. But perhaps it always was. Frames An overarching story, such as the story of Scheherazade in Arabian Nights, is known as a “frame story”. The people stories at Lightfoot were framed by the concept of a journey to low carbon living ~ understandably lots of people wanted to write about their journeys. Hoorah for people.
