What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Le Perfect Weekend

I

T WAS my birthday last month and I got treated to a Michelin starred lunch. It’s probably best if I don’t name the restaurant as I’m not Mr Pernickety (pssst, it was The Whitebrook), but in classic Pete fashion, I got it wrong and thought I was going to a rambling old pub by a river. In fact, to my surprise, we were at a rather swish beige and white temple to gastronomy on a hill. The staff were all perfectly nice and didn’t throw me out for being a yobbo. The price was reasonable for a Michelin joint, £29 for three courses. The food was subtle, tasty and beautifully presented. The amuse bouche were amusing. But I don’t know, there is something about the small portions, the obsequious staff, the constant refilling of the wine and water glasses, the long description of what’s on your plate that just gets up my bloody nose. When it all comes down, I want a great glass of wine, a BIG plate of tasty food and then to be left alone. It is in this spirit that, a year ago, we started running events in and around Presteigne as Full Circle starting off with the festival last June. The setting was stunning, the bar was great, the food was good and the music was fantastic. It was located a few miles outside Presteigne in a magical Iron Age fort circle and because of the lack of parking space we bussed everybody up there. A lot of punters hadn’t got a clue where they were going and to this day still don’t know where we took them. The undoubted musical stars were Dutch trio, ‘My Baby’, but more about them later. Since the festival we have done a number of very jolly events. French piano genius, Jean Louis and his fiddle-playing daughter at the Workhouse. A sensational four-day pub at Andy and Jules house in Presteigne and then from January, a series of sold out musical cabaret nights in the Assembly Rooms, ‘The Velvet Violin’. So if it’s alright with you, I’m going to spend the next couple of paragraphs self-indulgently advertising the upcoming Full Circle gigs in the hope that you’ll join the fun. Dutch band, My Baby I mentioned as the hit of last year’s festival. This extraordinary funky, Delta bluesy band have sort of become pretty famous since they were here last year. They have toured the States, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, had a new album out and toured the UK supporting Seasick Steve at some really big venues. They are getting lots of British radio play and they are all over Dutch TV like a rash. Luckily, we booked them a long time ago, but this might be your last chance to see them in an intimate venue. It’s a bit scary, but we’ve decided to put them on in Hereford on 5th June. Full Circle has never been outside Presteigne before, so God knows what will happen to us in the big city. We’ll probably get sold a fake Rolex watch, have our passport stolen and then get beaten up in a back alley behind All Saints. But what the hell. The Left Bank is such a beautiful venue, we couldn’t resist it. We’ve got the band playing in the Coach House with a bar downstairs and lots of seating outside, overlooking the river and I can guarantee the band will not disappoint. Then they are at The Crown Inn, Oakengates on the 6th, Presteigne Assembly Rooms on the 7th and The Vaults, Bishop’s Castle on the 8th. Meanwhile, we are all getting revved up for this year’s mini festival, ‘Le Weekend’. It’s on the 4th and 5th July and takes place at Broadheath House, just outside Presteigne. It’s a nice country pad with a wing and formal gardens designed by Clough Small Ads 4 Williams-Ellis. (You know him what did all that Port Merion stuff!) The event takes Hugh’s bit 6 place in the orchard and the formal gardens, on the large terrace and the Loggia and Art 8 if you can’t understand my rather tricolourful poster on page 27, here’s the deal. It kicks off Saturday lunchtime with John and Pam doing an Ottolenghi style three-course Art workshops 12 lunch for 60 people (first come, first served for tickets, only available from Courtyard Cinema 18 Antiques, Presteigne). Email us if you would like to come and can’t get to Presteigne, Dance 22 info@fullcirclefestival.co.uk and the music for that is supplied by French piano whizz, Jean Louis, AKA Macadam Piano. Food 24 Then at 5 o’clock the evening fun begins. If there is any nicer way to spend a warm Music 26 summer evening than sitting on the terrace at Broadheath with a glass of red (specially Music workshops 40 imported for the event from Trattoria La Vialla) or one of Hugh’s specially selected local ales while listening to the exquisite voice of Nuala Honan, or watching Macadam Piano or the Venues 43 clowning of Jeanne Cortez, maybe grabbing some falafels or barbecued kebabs, sliding up Band directory 44 and doing a tango to Little Rumba or even hitting the ballroom for a quick jive to The Black Theatre 46 Rapids then I don’t know what it is. On Sunday from 12 noon, the third part of the Le Weekend starts with a free brunch Word 50 French toast, honey and strawberries with a glass of Bucks Fizz. For entertainment there Grass roots 54 is the fabulous Lori Campbell, local heroes The Poobahs and then the mighty Curtis Eller’s Comp therapies 56 American Circus. Curtis comes on like a skinny mid-western dirt farmer who has been invaded by the spirit of Elvis. Please all come, you’ll love it. Details on page 27. We take no Then straight after that on Wednesday the 8th July, we head back to the Left Bank in responsibility for Hereford for another try at the Big City. this time it’s all taking place, weather permitting in the veracity of the the Car Park overlooking the river behind the Left Bank. I know that doesn’t sound very information herein appealing, but it is in fact a very appealing car park, all set with patterned tile work and Pete Mustill Macadam Piano will be zooming around on his electric-powered piano-spinning in circles Mayfield, Stapleton, while playing Debussy and Fats Waller with his daughter Jeanne perched on the front of the Nr Presteigne, Powys piano playing fiddle. And Little Rumba with their new singer, Jess Hall will be performing LD8 2LW outside on a little stage and the Beefy Boys will be cooking up burgers and the Left Bank Tel: 01544 260051 will do the bar and I can’t think of a nicer place to be on a summer’s evening... oh Email: info@broadsheep.com shit, I already used that line for Le Weekend. Well never mind, for God’s sake Website: www.broadsheep.com just bloody come.

ORMER Education Fuehrer Mr.Gove furthered his old prep school dreams by reducing the History syllabus to a set of nationalistic dates chosen to flatter the Established Order. Accordingly here is my essay on the blood-line of the British Monarchy: it is also a history lesson for Salmond, Sturgeon and any other of the fishy nationalists we Welsh borderers so rightly distrust. If I remember my kings and queens aright from Churchill’s “Our Island Story” (if ever history was written by the victor ..) but more memorably from “1066 and all that”, “bad” Richard (Plantagenet) III murdered the (good) Princes in the Tower and then was killed by the usurper Henry (Tudor) VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, causing all those recent headlines about re-burying Richard Crookback of York in Leicester. The Tudors were Welsh, but also part-Frenchdescended Marcher warlords; so Henry VII was nominally Welsh. Mind you the dubious concept of nationality being what it is, in the 16th C. the Welsh thought they were descended from a tribe of warriors who got lost returning home from the Siege of Troy, like Odysseus only permanently going round in circles through history like the Wherethefukarewi tribe. If Nigel Farage could just voice-over the sat-nav directions would the Welsh please resume their journey and return to where they came from? - i.e. the eastern Mediterranean. One racial myth is as good as another. For instance the Czechs are still convinced that they are Celts. End of diversion. But the Welsh/ Tudor line of DNA died out with childless Elizabeth (Tudor) I, whose (English) mother’s head was chopped off by her serial killer father Henry (Tudor) VIII. Continuing this vigorous tradition Elizabeth chopped the head off her cousin, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots who was the half-French mother of the next king of Scotland and then England ie mostly Scots James (Stuart) I. His father was tall, lusty, arrogant Henry Stuart who was another of Mary Q. of S.’s cousins and became her 2nd husband. However the public-spirited Earl of Bothwell arranged the suffocation of Henry Stuart while he lay in his orchard, and then became Mary’s 3rd husband just a month afterwards, in a plot (but a real one) which prefigures Hamlet. Thus Shakespeare casts James VI of Scotland as Hamlet and then for an encore writes the Scottish play, casting James (by then also I of England) as Malcolm, whose kingly father Macbeth murders in his bed. Tightrope walking by WS .... Tiptoeing onwards... All the above was a good history lesson for the next King, James I’s son the half-Danish Charles I, who thus knew what to expect. A chop on the old block ...

6

Scottish Nationalists say that the Scots never lost to the English, but on the contrary inherited England. This is because before James became James I of England he was James VI of Scotland and because the Act of

Union amalgamated the kingdoms in 1707. However that act comes way later after the last of the Stuart clan half French James II, was ousted in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when he hadn’t even time to get his trews on over his naked buttocks as he fled down the Thames in a wee bonny rowboat - hence the adjective Glorious. But what the phrase Glorious Revolution cleverly hides is that “we” then in fact handed our entire suite of countries over to the mighty Dutch i.e. William and Mary of Orange, still beloved as King Billy by a small but vocal portion of the people now living in Ireland, which however is the only major part of GB never to have had a hand (surely a gland?) in the DNA of the British Monarchy, a poor reward for their misguided loyalty to the Netherlands. The act of Union is passed during William and Mary’s half-Dutch daughter Queen Anne’s reign, none of whose 17 quarter-Dutch, quarter-British, half-Danish children survived. After that any vestige of Welsh, English or Scots blue blood disappears from the royal lineage when “we” invite the Germans to reign over us in 1714. George I - V and in between times William IV, Victoria, and Edward the Potato all married their Hanoverian cousins for every single one of the next 238 long and incestuous years (except Edward VIII who doesn’t count). Yes, it takes from 1714 until 1952 when Elizabeth II becomes Queen for there once again to be some authentic British DNA flowing through the veins of a reigning monarch - via the English Queen Mother, a Bowes-Lyon who married 100% Germanic George VI. Later on our very own 50% Greek, 25% German Prince Charles marries Diana (exit pursued by the Press), and finally Kate marries one or other of the Princes in the Tower, and it starts all over again and ...... but who cares!!! .... God Save the Queen anyone? Thus the history of the most nationalistic symbol within Our Island Myth, the monarchy, proves to be not English, Scottish or etc. but a multi-ethnic pot pourri of posh immigrants. Beware Macduff and pass the port and here’s a toast to George VIIth (still in nappies therefore “good” so far) or even Queen Whatalot* I, one or other of whom will be by far the most home-made monarchs since “bad” Richard III d. 1485 - that is if we still have such anachronisms as monarchs or kingdoms or tired old racial stereotypes by the time its his/ her turn to ascend what remains of the throne to rule over what remains of the kingdom, after Sturgeon has led the Scots off into the wilderness or back into the EU, and Plaid Cymru and Sinn Fein have repatriated their native lands and the English are left to gnaw on each others’ bones in an empty larder under the coldly amused eyes of prefects Cameron, Osbourne, Gove etc., all of us having left the EU by mistake. *of names, money, privilege etc.. TOMORROWLAND (Cert TBA) Frank Walker (George Clooney) was a boy genius who, banished from an amazing netherworld he’d helped create – the titular TOMORROWLAND – is now a middle-aged grump who somehow still believes it offers salvation for our dying planet. But along comes rebellious teenager, Casey Newton (Britt Robertson, CAKE), who stumbles on the key to re-entering this secret futuristic dominion, prompting her, Frank and the somewhat sinister David Nix (Hugh Laurie), to embark on a hazardous mission to get there because, “Every second that ticks by, the future is running out.” Director/co-writer Brad Bird has form with both action thrillers (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE) and high-end animation (THE INCREDIBLES), which he brilliantly melds into a gripping tale which unsurprisingly is named after an area of its production company’s very own Disneyworld. CHILD 44 (12A) In 1950s communist Russia, having refused to cover up the murder of a friend’s son and denounce his wife Raisa (Noomi Rapace) as a traitor, secret policeman Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy) is exiled from Moscow to a remote gulag. But old habits die hard after he stumbles on a series of killings matching those of his friend’s son, and encouraged by a local general (Gary Oldman), the couple set off in pursuit, in the process unearthing dark, dangerous secrets that imperil them both. Based on the case of the so-called ‘Rostrov Ripper’ and his 52 victims, this gritty thriller from acclaimed young Swedish director Daniel Espinosa (EASY MONEY) reunites Hardy and Rapace from the highly underrated THE DROP, and Hardy and Oldman from TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY. CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA (15) In this incisive reflection on the tenuous nature of fame, Juliette Binoche is virtually if convincingly typecast as Maria, a 40-something actress, who made her movie breakthrough playing Sigrid, an 18 year-old who drove a woman twice her age to suicide. But now Maria is asked to play the older woman in a stage revival of the same work and acclaimed writer/ director Olivier Assayas (IRMA VEP, SUMMER HOURS, also with Binoche) throws her together with, if not against Jo-Ann, a sparky Hollywood ingénue (Chloë Grace Moretz, KICK-ASS) who’s slated to play Sigrid. As she rehearses in a posh Swiss resort, Maria struggles with her professional mortality whilst her long-suffering p.a. (Kristen Stewart, STILL ALICE) acts as a mediator between the two in a deliciously wry yet poignant ensemble piece. 11 June MAN AND SUPERMAN National Theatre (encore). The Duck’s Nest Bistro, Presteigne

T

HE better-informed among the generally erudite readers of the Woolly Organ will already recognise Presteigne as the home of their favourite cultural monthly. They may also be aware that the proprietor of this periodical has very little in common with the owner of the Sun newspaper. However, one characteristic that these Press Barons share is their claim not to interfere with the editorial content of their publications. However, Mr P is not so naive as to underestimate a proprietor’s need to avoid doorstep defecation and, with that in mind, he has refrained from writing about any of the eating places in Presteigne – until now when, at last, a restaurant has appeared at 10, High Street which he feels he can review without giving offence. Mr P and his lovely companion were fairly knackered after a day’s trawl through stalls occupied by a thousand antique, bric-a-brac and out-and-out junk dealers pitched on the Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wells. They drove away more than ready for refreshment and, after stopping for tea at The Metropole in Llandod, (which was stuffed with Bentleys of every vintage in the car park and Bentley owners of a more restricted vintage in the bars), made their way north to the always enjoyable Lion at Llanbister to dine. Sadly every seat and a few more were taken for dinner by a contrasting gang of transport enthusiasts – thirty motor-cycling policemen from Cork City who’d come across the Irish Sea for a short break and a bit of Welsh craic. Luckily, though, one of Mr P’s scouts had told him about a new place recently opened in Presteigne.

The Duck’s Nest is a whimsical sort of name, spelled out in a whimsical sort of font based, Mr P deduces, on duck’s feet. That’s better than calling it No 10 or The Former Butcher’s or whatever it was; it has a bright fresh blue exterior, and an inviting, amenable interior – warm lighting, well-worn oak timbers, stylishly battered old tables and country chairs. Mr P and the LC were given the last vacant table, and felt at home at once. The music quietly playing was appropriate to the point where it didn’t impose on the consciousness but contributed to an ambience that put them both in good humour before they’d even had a drink or glanced at the menu. Wine and plain water arrived as they read a short, ultra-simple menu – three one word choices each, for starter, main and pudding – for instance, To Start: ASPARAGUS, SEWIN or BEEF. No prices; no explanations – Wacky? Or irritating? They were explained soon enough by an efficient, friendly young woman, called Jemima, who is co-owner of the Duck’s

24

Nest with the chef, Peter. He had come from the River Café by Glasbury Bridge near Hay – which Mr P enjoyed and reviewed two or three years ago; she, Mr P guessed, had come from somewhere near Sloane Square. It seemed that all the other tables had arrived shortly before, including several young chaps with full-on Fidel Castro beards, suggesting a degree of hipness if not actual sophistication among the clientele. This was lost on the LC, whose shapely jaw was starting to grind with hunger. Just as her mood was becoming visibly ragged, an unexpected and pleasing little amuse-bouche of spicy cauliflower in breadcrumbs arrived. She pounced on it like a tiger on a small antelope and it saw her through until her starter arrived. Her choice ‘BEEF’ – flourfried strips of beef with a lime and chilli dip and rocket dressing – looked good to Mr P; she agreed, but added that the beef should have been a little more tender, while the rocket dressing was superfluous and interfered with the excellent spicy dip. Mr P ordered ‘SEWIN’ – a good Welsh term for Sea Trout, in this case prepared as gravadlax, cured in salt and sugar, served with rocket and something which Mr P wrote down but now can’t read. The combination of flavours was delicate and thoroughly enjoyable. ‘BREAM’, which the LC wanted for her main course was, for this performance, being played by the understudy, ‘Monkfish’, served with pearl barley and chorizo (which Mr P gently pointed out to Jemima should not be pronounced ‘choritso’). This was an adventurous, possibly risky fusion, but it worked for the LC, and a small smile on her face confirmed her enjoyment. Mr Pernickety’s piece of ‘CHICKEN’ came poached and draped, like the Naked Maya, on a bed of rice. Subtly prepared and perfectly cooked, Mr P’s only minor cavil was that it lacked robustness of flavour for his personal taste. It was nevertheless a more than satisfactory dish. The verdict on puddings was split 50/50. Mr P enjoyed his ‘RHUBARB’ which was a delicate and delicious kind of creme brulée, while the LC found her ‘HAZELNUT’ – a muffin in a tall cup – too bulky and too dry; she felt it would have worked better in a ramekin. Mr P drank most of the bottle of good red house wine that they’d had, but as usual has mislaid the name. There is something a little reckless about heading into a meal in an unfamiliar restaurant without knowing the cost, although it can add a certain frisson, like wild swimming with no idea of the depth or temperature of the water. Mr P dares say that if he’d asked, he’d have been told, or prices might have been posted up somewhere. In any event, having ordered their meal without any idea of the price, and thinking – erroneously as it turned out – that was a menu prix-fixe, he was not disagreeably surprised by a bill of around £80. From his perspective, it was certainly the most enjoyable dinner he has had in a Marches restaurant in a long time. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Local by Rail they can hire an electric bike for the last leg of the journey. Passengers are also advised to tap old mud from their walking boots before boarding the train. For passengers wishing to bring mobility scooters on the train please use the cycle carriage. This facility is located between the second carriage and the buffet. The buffet on this train is run by third year students on a Powys catering course. This award winning service has been especially popular and the home-made “Breakfastsby-Rail” are delicious”.

What if It’s June in the year 2020 and you are standing on a Railway Station early in the morning. You are dressed for work and heading for Swansea, and you have purchased a Heart-ofWales-Line- Saver online, so you have ticket in hand, jacket over one shoulder, and the birds are singing. Also it’s not raining. Just beyond the platform, the Local By Rail Hub is opening up. Operated from a building reminiscent of the old GWR wagons, the hub acts as a distribution point for local produce. Local by Rail staff manage and receive orders and then re-distribute freshly gathered and prepared food to chefs, hoteliers etc. The 8.15 into Swansea draws into the station and comes to a stop. Behind two smart passenger carriages is a guard van. A man in his twenties, wearing a “Local by Rail ” tee shirt and pushing a large trolley open up the door. Inside lamb shanks from Builth Wells, strawberries from Craven Arms, apple juice and pear schnapps from Knighton, stone baked pizza from Llangybie and gourmet cheese from Llandysul. Crates labeled for different restaurant chefs and hoteliers are neatly transferred to the trolley. The door is closed again. You board the train in one of the clean and airy passenger carriages and take a seat. The familiar whistle sounds and the train pulls out of the station. You arrive by train into Swansea at 8.15 am - time to grab a coffee along by the Waterfront before your first meeting. A text message from your boss – “Stuck in traffic. Please send apologies.” Later, on Shrewsbury station … Your old mum and dad are on their way back home after a few days holiday. They’re waiting for a train with all their suitcases and paraphernalia and your mum listens carefully to the announcement in Welsh and also in English whilst your dad grapples with the suitcases and drops his smart phone:

“The next train to arrive at Platform 4a will be the 10.45 from Crewe, travelling from here along the Heart of Wales Line, stopping at Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Hopton Heath, Bucknell, Knighton, Knucklas” … the microphone crackles loudly … “passengers wishing to visit the Elan Valley Dams should leave the train at Builth Road where

Weekend Special On your way home, you pick up a leaflet from Swansea station about the Local by Rail Weekend Special. You think it would be perfect for your Cousin Elise and her friends who are coming over from the US for a month and you haven’t a clue what to do with them. There are different options and this one sounds good - travel on the first day from Swansea along the line to the Local by Rail Hub, catch a hydrogen fuel-cell powered local network taxi to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, stopping off at Wright’s Emporium for an extraordinarily good lunch not to mention the cakes. Back on the train and a short journey to Llandovery. Evening meal and stay over at “The Level Crossing” which is a posh bunkhouse. Take a ride in the acclaimed “viewing carriage” with floor to ceiling windows which make for great viewing, especially across Cynghordy Viaduct. Arrive at Llanwrtyd Wells with an option to try out bog snorkeling or explore Wales’ “smallest town” before cycling back to Llandovery on electric bikes and catching the last train back to Swansea. Final meal at swanky hotel and inclusive overnight stay in rooms overlooking Swansea Bay. Perfect for your visitors. You book it. Just as you pull into your station a helpful announcement “This train will stop at Sugar Loaf Halt. For passengers leaving the train at Sugar Loaf, please remember that the new compost toilets at the station still don’t have locks on the doors. The Train Company apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause.” Chips You arrive home, tired and hungry. You have received a text message from B, who was supposed to be cooking a special dinner for you. “Stuck in traffic. Please buy chips” Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
