What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

BROAD Two-Wheeled Mayhem I sheep

f you remember last month I was sitting around waiting for three things to happen. Well they did. Sheep Music passed off in a blaze of unexpected sunshine. The youthful organising committee had done a fine job of keeping vehicles off the site during build week, so instead of a soggy quagmire, we ended up with a fantastic, sunny, grassy, well attended, packed full of great music, festival. The Tour de France, you must remember it. It happened just before all that ballyhoo about the sport’s week in Hackney. As I predicted it was a stunning victory for Bradley Wiggins, nearly spoiled by two things. Firstly the never-ending problem of the Murdoch Mafia’s Sponsorship deal and secondly by a sneaking suspicion that if he had not been under team orders, Chris Frome (Bradley’s team-mate and nursemaid) might easily have won it himself. The final thing I was waiting for was my trip to Amsterdam to meet a bizarre Small Ads 4 bicycle cruiser gang called the ‘Chopederos’. I was all set to leave on the 1st of August when I discovered my passport was out of date and the only way I could renew Papers 6 it fast was to waste a day in Liverpool hanging around the passport office. Spending a Art 8 day cycling around Liverpool in the sunshine, it quickly became apparent I was pretty Art workshops 14 much on my own. Yes folks, the cycling boom, we’re meant to be in the middle of, has decided to give the Scousers a miss. Four hours cycling round town and along Cinema 20 the Merseyside cycle path and I probably saw, at most, a dozen cyclists! What the Dance 24 hell is going on in Liverpool. Has everyone got a car? Is cycling banned by some Food 26 archaic by-law? Perhaps we could send the whole of Liverpool to Holland for a brief visit, they’d soon get the hang of it, as long as we could keep them out of the coffee Music 28 shops. Music workshops 42 Anyway, the next day I dumped the car in a side street in Harwich and cycled onto Venues 45 the fabulous new Stenna ferry. Now I am not a fan of overnight ferries but this brand new Stenna job is the dog’s bollocks. Big and roomy, comfortable, staff friendly, good Band directory 46 reasonably priced edible food and really cosy cabins with a shower that works and a Theatre 48 flat screen satellite TV. I rolled into The Hook with a smile on my face. Word 51 The difference between the Dutch cycling experience and the British one is like the difference between the London Symphony Orchestra and your seven year olds Green pages 54 first violin practice. Sometime in the late 1950s the canny Netherlanders enacted Comp therapies 56 a series of cycle friendly laws that ensured that everywhere you go in the country there are smooth, signposted cycle paths sometimes on both(!) sides of the road and We take no more importantly bicycles have the right of way over cars. If a car runs you down, it’s responsibility for the car drivers fault no matter how stupid the cyclist has been. As a consequence the veracity of the everybody cycles. Well you would, wouldn’t you? Oh, I forgot, they also passed a law information herein banning hills. Pete Mustill I set off north up the Dutch coast on an Noordzeeroute 8am Mayfield, Stapleton, empty motorway of a cycle path called Nr Presteigne, Powys the Noordzeeroute. It was 8am in the LD8 2LS morning and a few people were walking Tel: 01544 260051 their dogs, but I had the path mostly to Email: info@broadsheep.com myself. Then as the morning progressed Website: www.broadsheep.com and the sun got hotter, the full panoply of Dutch cycling tribes started to reveal themselves. First the serious racing cyclists out on their morning training run. Then mums with kiddie seats taking their toddlers to the crèche. Then some old geezers who always wake up early and can’t think of anything else to do but go for a ride. Then the mountain bikers looking for a sand dune to storm up. Then whole cycling clubs on racing bikes panting to the Hague and back. Then pairs of tourists of a certain age on hired electric bikes. Then by 11 o’clock, - well – just everybody going for a ride. Going to the beach. Going to work. It was quite simply two-wheeled mayhem. I felt very naive and foreign. In fact I was quite relieved to quit the Noordzeeroute at Zandvort and head inland to Amsterdam. I stopped to eat an ice-cream and catch my breath between Zandvort and Harlem and then cruised gently to Central Station in order to get my bearings. Central Station a small There, the whole madness started up again. Central Amsterdam in August bit of the bike park is crazy. You’ve got a million Dutch cyclists whizzing along as usual plus another half million tourists of brightly coloured rented bikes who haven’t got a clue how to ride or where they are going. Eventually I was forced to a very sad, but inevitable conclusion. There are too many bikes! Or maybe there are too many people – full stop. As for my crazy Dutch bicycle gang, the ‘Chopederos’. I think they and their mad bikes deserve their own article. P.S. Nicola has just reminded me that after the longest negotiations in the history of real estate our oldest surviving advertiser the Hat Shop is finally sold (boo-hoo). The end of an era and more to the point the end of my lunch!

Bloody Chariots of Fire

OMEONE says that the Olympics are over. How true, but then again what nonsense. The Olympic spirit is a wonderful thing (particularly when it is Gwynfor Daedreth’s Five Rings Welsh Vodka Style Beverage Drink the Best Ignore the Rest, available at an eisteddfod near you, buy now while stocks last, thank you Gwynfor). As I was saying. The Olympic Spirit has remodelled London, is responsible for the Standard Chartered crisis and has even got a couple of mentions on Midlands Today. But whither now, eh? As excitement steadily builds towards Buenos Aires, or is it Rio, 2015, or is it 2016, how can things possibly be improved? When Britain secured the Olympics, Broad Sheep proposed a radical restructuring, based on a close analysis of Classical precedent, much of it in the original Greek. The idea was that the games should be split into two: the Primal Games, to be conducted on a Greek island by athletes with no clothes on, who would level a stretch of beach on which they would run races; and the Anything Goes Olympics, which would be conducted in the middle of the Indy 500 track among wreaths of toxic fumes. Drug taking would be encouraged, cheating richly rewarded, and everything including the bribes would be sponsored by major corporations. Boss Rogge, leafing through Broad Sheep behind the blacked-out windows of his limo, ignored these sensible suggestions, and put his weight behind the usual chauvinistic musclefest. Ah, well. Bureaucrats who reside in Fort Knoxes of prejudice, stuffed with gold and impervious to outside influence, cannot be expected to listen to argument, however closely reasoned. And we should not let a few charming performances by dancing horses obscure the fact that new thinking is vitally necessary if we are to keep the Olympic brand alive, sorry, torch burning. So here are some suggestions for fine tuning. 1. Sponsorship. It is all very well for Coke and Macdonalds to exercise a stranglehold on the catering. But there is a strange arm’s length quality to the effort. Why not get sponsors directly involved in events? If Old Matelot Rum Soaked Shag sponsored tennis, for instance, players would be compelled to play with fuming briar pipes clamped between their teeth, and serves could come whipping out of an impenetrable globe of smoke. In the wrestling, sponsored by Acme Slaughterers, participants would tear into slabs of raw steak between rounds, and lubricate their outlying portions with the grease. You get the message. 2. Music. Bloody, bloody, bloody Chariots of Fire. 3. Weeping. Everyone except the horses and Husain Bolt bursts, on finishing a race, into tears. This is no good to anyone, and leads to dark thoughts about the psychological transference that has occurred between athlete and coach. This is a fundamentally abusive relationship, based on the embracing of pain for transitory pleasure. Welcome, little gymnast, to my Red Room of Pain, from which you will emerge. . . changed. Cry us a river, medallists and failures. But let that river flow underground. 4. Chauvinistic nonsense. By the time you read this, we will know if the US or China has triumphed in the medal

rankings. I care not a row of buttons. In a fair world, we need to apply the Medal Compensation Factor. So if the Brits have got thirty medals and the Chinese have got forty medals, and the Brits have got 60 million inhabitants and the Chinese have got 1.5 billion inhabitants i.e. twenty-five times what the Brits have got, we apply the MCF and discover that the Brits have got 25x30 medals, which is quite a lot more than the Chinese. The options are stark. Either we adopt this system, or we breed like hell and put on a lot of new events suitable for four-yearolds. You need accountancy training to understand this, of course, but the moral of the story is, we won, we won, Team Heebeejeebee, Engerlund. Now I am going to bed for the first time in what feels like weeks. Llywelyn apWythylarktwachddbeachvwlwbwl

cinema ANNA KARENINA Director Joe Wright’s consummate feel for period drama (PRIDE & PREJUDICE, ATONEMENT) is further evidenced with his unique take on Leo Tolstoy’s epic saga of misplaced family ties and romantic danger. Scripted by another master of historical adaptation, Tom Stoppard, it tells of a 19th Century Russian princess (charismatic Wright regular, Keira Knightley) locked into an unhappy marriage to an older statesman (Jude Law) and her passionate affair with an affluent cavalryman, Count Alexei Vronsky, (Aaron Johnson – magnetic as John Lennon in NOWHERE BOY). And although it’s one of cinema’s most filmed literary works, under Wright’s stewardship ANNA KARENINA achieves a whole new status. Featuring performances that owe as much to the brashly theatrical as they do to the more intimate screen drama, and enhanced by intoxicatingly lush visuals and Dario Marianelli’s majestic score, this ANNA KARENINA is not only a stark caution on the perils of infidelity, but also an absolute feast for the senses. CARNAGE Welcome back after the summer recess to Film Soc. Corner where based on the hit Broadway play, God of Carnage and co-written by its author, Yasmina Reza,we must laud Polanski’s latest and unexpectedly, nay disappointingly short film. It concerns two apparently sophisticated couples who meet in one of their Brooklyn apartments to have a civilized discussion following an attack by one of their respective sons on the other. The civility quickly descends into uncomfortable revelations about their respective characters, marriages and much else, and then into aggression and insults. Polanski doesn’t often do dark comedy, but in Carnage he excels and the performances, especially by Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet playing hilariously against type, considerably aid his cause. DREDD Based on the hugely popular sci-fi cartoon hero, Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is an elite law enforcer-cum-justice dispenser in the dystopian Mega City One that sprawls across much of a postapocalypse America. Required to assess a rookie colleague with powerful psychic abilities (Olivia Thirlby), the couple confront a gang led by the vicious Ma-Ma (Lena Headley) in Peachtree Tower, the 200 storey slum where they manufacture Solo-Mo, a powerful psychotic drug that does just what it says on the tin. Outraged by the Judges’ capture of her head honcho, Ma-Ma locks down the entire block triggering their increasingly desperate and violent efforts to exit intact with their prisoner. Cutting-edge 3-D and Dolby surround-sound add awesome effects to the narrative tension ramped up by director Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT, ENDGAME) and his highly gifted creative team. Overcome your prejudices about comic book heroes made celluloid and be entertainingly gasped.

The Mail Room, Ludlow

HEN the Mail Room in Ludlow opened earlier in the summer it bore a considerable burden of expectation. In a prime spot in the town, it would seat around sixty people in a large, light room. Added to those assets was the slightly bizarre circumstance that Ludlow, famous as it is for food, seemed only to offer top-notch joints of Michelin status, or pubs. In fact, over the last year or so a few good, mid-priced restaurants have emerged, but none on this scale. What was more, the Mail Room promised to be a broadbased brasserie, serving breakfast from 9:30, for which there is also a need in the town (especially for those unresponsive to the peremptory hustling of the staff in Costa.) Before the Mail Room opened, Mr Pernickety was discouraged by the name and ultra-bland “tmr” logo. That it is housed in a former Post Office seemed irrelevant and the “Mail Room” says nothing at all. The first time Mr P and his lovely companion ate there, shortly after it opened, they were alarmed by the long, rambling menu. Their starters, bread and olives were good but the Italian Flatbread on slippery white square porcelain palettes with rich toppings just didn’t come off (and were hard to handle.) They were dismayed by the astonishing level of noise bouncing off six entirely hard surfaces and increased by the culinary clatter emanating from the open-fronted kitchen (a fashionable practice as pointless, in Mr P’s view, as a film director including the cameramen, focus pullers, sound chaps and continuity girls in his final cut.) The ambience of the place is uninspiring; a number of unimpressive pictures and a couple of downright horrid ones had been hung uncertainly on grey walls. There is an expanse of exposed 50s orange brick behind the bar (why?); the furniture is a heavily lacquered dark jungle wood of some sort, with ugly (if perfectly comfortable) chairs to match. The LC sensed that the feel of the place suggested a strong American influence, with a look about it of a ’90s Los Angeles restaurant intended for a light, bright, warm climate where the front would be permanently open, making it seem out of place in a mediaeval borough in the Welsh Marches. Dining there then was not an enjoyable experience, but it was clear that this was the owners’ first restaurant and they were having teething troubles which more seasoned operators would have avoided. Mr P felt it unfair to write a review of the place based on this early encounter. Nevertheless it was not with much optimism that Mr P and the LC revisited the Mail Room. Fortunately, some things had noticeably changed. The restaurant on a wettish Wednesday was full, but the cacophony was not as great as Mr P had expected. It was still loud, but some measures had been taken to deaden the echo a little by carpeting the undersides of the tables and placing an (unseen) duvet over the top of the entrance lobby. These measures still weren’t enough, though. Large long curtains, at least to frame if not cover the large windows, would help absorb sound and soften the starkness of the walls. Table cloths, too, would decrease the echo (and hide the unattractive tables.) A little Miles Davies or J S Bach tootling in the background could only help.

Another change was in the menu. It was altogether crisper and more appealing. The flatbreads had been aimed out, and a clever DIY Grill menu added. After glasses of good Pinot Grigio, excellent olives (though not the delicious bread of their first visit), the LC was visibly heartened by the appearance of her Pan Fried Scallops with Local Pancetta and a Celeriac and Truffle Purée (£8.50). As she ate, she nodded graciously with a serene smile; she was, she said, enjoying the vigorous contrast between the pancetta and the seafood. Mr P, too, was delighted with his Orzo and Chicken Florentine Salad (£6) – a bowl full of surprises. Orzo, he was told, were the little grains of pasta which were scattered through the salad along with strong sun-dried tomatoes, capers, pine nuts and black olives. The LC, sticking to her seafood theme, had a main course of Moules Mariniére (11.95), big fat, fresh tasty mussels in a supremely good classic marinére sauce, she said. Mr P, who helped himself to a few moules whilst the LC was examining the waitress’s intriguing hairdo, wholeheartedly agreed. His own Oven-Roasted Pork Chop, Baby Chorizo with Red Wine Jus (13.95) was more unexpected – the chef’s own distinctive take on a pork chop. The juxtaposition of the excellent local pork and the strong tasting chorizo took a little getting used to, while the caramelly, even slightly burnt taste of the jus was a bit of a poser – a gastrofashion thing with a slight question mark over its validity and contribution. However, Mr P accepted that pork chops don’t always have to come with Bramley apple sauce, and by the end if it, he was beginning to appreciate the difference. With his pork he drank a large glass or two of an excellent Australian Shiraz called, he thinks, Runamok. By that stage both diners were agreed that they had eaten very well and that the Mail Room had certainly overcome its initial problems in the kitchen. Regrettably, the puddings they ordered did not enhance that view. Chocolate and Hazelnut Tart (£5.50) was heavy and cloying in texture; Mr P’s trifle was just too firm, almost rubbery and, unusually, given his natural parsimony, unfinished. However, having been concerned that the Mail Room was just not going to deliver, Mr P feels that the management are listening and flexible; they have a very good chef, and, with luck, support and a bit of tweaking, it could settle into a useful, good value brasserie and become well worth a visit. HE first recorded Olympic Games took place in 776 BC. At this time Britain was a wild and anarchic place, inhabited by wolves and pagans, blacksmiths and musicians, mad women and wild hairy farmers. But in Greece 776 BC, amidst outcrops of fig and pomegranate, the great statue of Zeus watched over the first Olympiad, whilst a nearby olive tree … planted by Hercules, or so the story goes … provided the olive wreath crowns for winning contestants. In Greek mythology, Hercules was the son of Zeus, but he was stripped of his immortality at a young age and then had to earn it back. This he did by completing twelve challenges, that included fighting off the man-eating Stymphalian Birds, and slaying the Lernaen Hydra … a vile beast with “more heads than the vase-painters could paint - and for each head cut off it grew two more - and poisonous breath”. Having succeeded in his impossible tasks, Hercules planted an olive tree at Olympia, and that’s where we pick up the original story of the games and olive wreaths. Like Hercules, Olympic contestants had to break through their own barriers of doubt and fatigue in order to run faster, to succeed and to achieve their absolute potential. And the reward for those first Olympians was an olive wreath, symbol of immortality. Which brings us neatly to Olympics 2012 and the people of Britain, hosts this year to the ancient ceremony. For those of us who occasionally wear tracksuits, the whole thing began with the Olympic flame. Presteigne missed out, but the flame made it to Leominster, just moments before the brief dry spell (“spring”) turned into a biblical 40 days and 40 nights of rain (June and July). Meanwhile, away in Stratford, preparations were on a grander scale, and for the contestants themselves, relentless training programmes had started years ago. But, after all the British bank scandals and news-of-theworld arrests, cuts to the NHS, riots, loss of the Sustainability Commission and willful stamping upon all things green, caring and long lasting by the Treasury, national morale was feeling rather low and to be honest I didn’t expect the Olympics to come to much. And then To Blake’s Jerusalem The show began. It began, not with glitzy costumes and the sort of meaningless pompousity that I had personally been dreading, but with a genuine expression of the Britain we know and

love and actually are … nothing bland, nothing sterilized, nothing too imperial, strategic or corporate … just the whole wonderful thing … from green and pleasant land, complete with sheep and rain, to Brunel, the industrial revolution, hip hop, suffragettes, children’s stories and welcoming speeches from a mock up of the Glastonbury Tor. Not only that but our own mythological tree, the Glastonbury Thorn, was there. And then came the athletes themselves … representative of those amongst us, from every corner of the earth, driven to achieve the impossible. Team GB did us all proud … their names will no doubt be immortalised … but what of immortality itself? Can the gods offer us immortality? Can modern technology? Or is immortality something different and down to us? Perhaps the closest we all get to immortality is through our children and their future. Perhaps it’s about breaking through the barriers of doubt and fatigue to find solutions to today’s devastating environmental problems. Achieving the impossible is, in that case, a future worth fighting for … although challenging the multi headed Fossil Fuel Beast and the Stymphalian Hawks in the Treasury, may turn out to be a Herculean task.
