What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches
BROAD Nordic Noir T
sheep
HE story so far:- Washed up Border magazine proprietor and part-time sleuth. The Hippy Dick has agreed to take on the job of finding a very rare, puffin hunting, Norwegian Lundhund belonging to Lady Rockford. Meanwhile, local antique dealer, Alfie has spotted a strange Norwegian car - a Troll in town. It seemed to me that there had to be a connection between the two Nordic mysteries and the best way to find the pooch was probably to find the motor first. But how? I had a sudden brainwave, but, to my surprise, Alfie got there seconds before me. “Let’s go and have a pint in the Duck’s Arms” he suggested. “Not only will it clear our heads but it’s also Saturday lunchtime which is when the lcoal vintage car buffs all get together to discuss gear ratios and drink themselves stupid. If they don’t know who the owner of the mysterious Troll is, nobody will”. Small Ads 4 As we’d guessed, the tweed hat brigade were already firmly ensconced in the snug Art 6 and after a lot of, frankly, impolite guffawing about the Troll’s 700cc 2 stroke engine, Harry, Art workshops 10 the leader of the bunch, finally drawled that yes he did know a bloke who specialised in post war Scandainavian light cars and furthermore that person lived in the sleepy Cinema 16 seaside town of Llanfairfechan. I jumped into the conversation at that point, “LlanfairDance 20 fechan, that’s where the very amazing Welsh writer Lloyd Jones lives. I’ve just finished Food 22 his book of short stories ‘My First Colouring Book’ and very fine it was too”. “I don’t know about that” huffed Harry, “I only read Classic Cars and Motor Sport, but Music 24 anyway, the guy you’re looking for lives there and his name is Bjørn Eidsvåg. He used Music workshops 33 to be a Norwegian popstar, but gave it all up to be a Lutherian priest and now he lives Band directory 34 on the Welsh coast”. “Thanks Harry, I’ll put a Glenfiddich behind the bar for you. Come on Alfie, we’re Theatre 36 Word 40 going to take the MG for a spin”. “But I haven’t finished my pint” moaned Alfie, but the chance to take his beloved MG for a spin was just too tempting. Grass roots 42 Alfie was the only person I’ve ever known to put a tiny A35 engine into an MGB, so Comp therapies 44 despite being extremely noisy, it went even slower than the original. Off we trundled to the wilds of Snowdonia. Hell it took a long time, but by five o’clock, after a spiffingly late We take no lunch on the terrace at Lake Vyrnwy Hotel, we were approaching our quarry. But how responsibility for the veracity of the we were going to find him? “I know” said Alfie. “Let’s ask that gormless looking 13 year information herein old in the bus shelter who’s staring into the middle distance and scratching his crotch”. Pete Mustill “Hey kid” I shouted from the MG, “know any Norwegian pop stars?” “Yo man bruv, I’m Mayfield, Stapleton, digging that Donkeyboy dude. That Downtown he recorded this year is a banging track”. Nr Presteigne, Powys “No, not Donkeyboy, someone a bit older called Bjørn” I suggested. LD8 2LW “No man, don’t josh my weegies. Bjørn ain’t no track hack, he’s just an old dude that Tel: 01544 260051 digs crappy cars”. “So you know him, where does he live?” “Man, his crib is in next block, Email: info@broadsheep.com it’s called Puffin House”. Shit! - Puffin House. Suddenly it all clicked into place. “Let’s Website: www.broadsheep.com check his house Alfie, but I bet I know where he is. I think its time for a trip to Puffin Island!” Puffin Island is just off the northern tip of Anglesey and in the same way the Norwegian Lundhund we were seeking nearly got wiped out by distemper in the 1940s, the puffins nearly got extinguished on the island by the accidental introduction of rats. Luckily the rats are now gone and the puffins were back. And so it came to pass, as the sun sank slowly over a calm Irish Sea, Alfie and I, having paid a King’s Ransom (well, £25) to hire a rowing boat from a rather grumpy Beaumaris local, stood on the edge of Puffin Island looking down on a very disturbing sight. Bjørn, we presumed it was he, was lying spreadeagled, probably dead at the bottom of a treacherous cliff face. The Lundhund was stuck, hanging by his toenails being attacked by some very pissed-off puffins. “Not a very rock ‘n’ roll death” observed Alfie. “I’ll hang on to your feet and see if you can grab the doggie”. 24 hours later having endured a very tortuous conversation with the local plods and after an awful lot of hanging about in the pub in Llanfairfechin, we were back in Presteigne and banging on Lady Rockford’s front door. The Lady herself flung the door open, took one look at the miserable mutt and said “Oh, you silly little man, that’s not my dog. My dog Ollluff is tucked up in front of the Aga. My sister borrowed him to go for a jaunt. That thing you are holding is just someone’s small brown and white collie. Good day Mr Dick”.

cinema THE BIG SHORT (15) Neatly straddling the claustrophobic boiler-room drama of MARGIN CALL and WOLF OF WALL STREET’s grand guignol, this latest entry to the financial disaster oeuvre has a starry cast playing various unsavoury high-rollers all betting against the inevitable crash of 2008, and winning! Narrator and potty-mouthed banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling) dives into the credit-default-swop swamp along with self-loathing Mark Baum (Steve Carell, in fine post-FOXHUNTER form), a mad-eyed – actually glass-eyed – Michael Burry (Christian Bale) and a disheveled, discredited rogue banker (Brad Pitt). Most of us know – roughly – what caused the global economic collapse, but writer/director Adam McKay (ANCHORMAN) has crafted a nifty com-dram that even the fiscally illiterate will find suspenseful… and so hilarious that a self-important miserablist at a recent Booth’s Bookshop screening rebuked this writer for laughing out loud! PEGGY GUGGENHEIM: ART ADDICT (15) Following her biopic of grandmother-in-law Diana Vreeland, THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL, Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s second documentary is rather different not least because her subject, the bohemian socialite and one of America’s most influential art collectors, died in 1979. Nevertheless the Peggy Guggenheim depicted here is a quixotic, ebullient character whose modernist eye helped bring the likes of Miro, Brancusi, Rothko and Magritte to international acclaim. Financed by her wealthy father – who died on the Titanic – she established prominent collections in New York, Paris and Venice, embarking on equally legendary affairs with both her favoured artists and other edgy creative icons including Samuel Becket and Max Ernst. Seen through the prism of this fascinating cultural tastemaker, Vreeland’s film illuminates a broad spectrum of 20th century modernism. 4 March 45 YEARS (15) Much Birch Community Hall 01981 540097 4 March SUFFRAGETTE (12A) The Simpson Hall, Burghill 01432 760816 4 March A WALK IN THE WOODS (15) Escleyside Hall 01981 510696 4 March RAMS (15) Stoke Prior VH 01568 760423 5 March SPECTRE (12A) Waverton VH 01244 335760 5 March THE MARTIAN (12A) Playhouse Cinema, Community Centre, Leominster 01568 616460 5 March A WALK IN THE WOODS (15) Lady Emily Hall, Tarrington 01432 890720 5 March A WALK IN THE WOODS (15) Rodington VH 01952 770524 5 March A GIRL AT MY DOOR (18) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-Wye 01989 720341 5 March 45 YEARS (15) Brilley VH 01544 327227 5 March PADDINGTON (PG) Bettws-y-Crwyn Parish Hall 01588 640233 5 March SUFFRAGETTE (12A) Clun Memorial Hall 01588 640254 5 March THE CHOIR (BOYCHOIR) (PG) Tasley Parish Room 01746 764881 6 March THE LOBSTER (15) Playhouse Cinema, Community Centre, Leominster 01568 616460 6 March A GIRL AT MY DOOR (18) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 7 March EVEREST (12A) Church Stretton School 01694 724330 7 March SUFFRAGETTE (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 8 March LAD: A YORKSHIRE STORY (12A) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-onWye 01989 720341

A BIGGER SPLASH (15) Following career-threatening throat surgery, Marianne (Tilda Swinton), an aging rock-star enjoys a holiday on a Sicilian island with filmmaker boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts, RUST AND BONE), when Harry (Ralph Fiennes), her bombastic exand his precocious daughter, Penelope (Dakota Johnson, 50 SHADES OF GREY) turn up uninvited. The ensuing friction, sexual intrigue and ultimately, fierce recriminations fuel Luca Guadagnino’s often funny, constantly edgy re-make of Jaques Deray’s 1969 sexual psycho–drama starring Alain Delon and Romy Schneider. Doyenne of immersive characterisation, Swinton, who also fronted Guadagnino’s sumptuous I AM LOVE, brilliantly navigates the extremes provoked by this emotional rollercoaster, largely without actually being allowed to speak, and the remaining ensemble – especially Fiennes exuding all the energetic intensity of his GRAND BUDAPEST role – provide terrific support.

grass roots Local Green Heroes ELAN VALLEY HYDRO The Elan Valley dams were built between 1892 and 1904. Constructed by huge teams of up to 5,000 workers at any one time – the five reservoirs are now owned by Dwr Cymru and have supplied Birmingham with fresh Welsh water since the early 1900s. They also serve our local area in times of shortage. The estates around the reservoirs have been beautifully preserved, and have become an especially important area for wild birds. The Elan Valley dams attract lots of visitors, especially walkers and cyclists, and the area is protected for the public to enjoy, thanks to a 999-year lease. The potential for generating clean, renewable energy from the dams is obvious. The first turbines were installed in turbine houses at Caban Coch many years ago but these older turbines have since been replaced by modern technology. One of the old turbines is on display outside the Elan Valley Visitor Centre Cafe (which also does very nice jacket potatoes and coffee incidentally). With all the environmental and economic advantages in mind, 5 modern hydropower schemes have been constructed at Claerwen, Craig Coch, Pen-y-Garreg, Caban Coch and Foel Tower. They use four Francis Turbines and one Kaplan Submersible turbine to generate power at 415 volts, which is then transformed onsite to 11,000 volts. The sites are connected by underground cable which terminates at Caban Coch and power is transmitted to Rhayader via another 7km of underground cable. Total output of clean energy is 4.2 MW.
RIVERSIMPLE RASA This February a small team of engineers based at Llandrindod Wells launched Riversimple Rasa – a hydrogen fuel cell car – for public trials. The new car reflects a simple idea that was first mooted in the 4th century by the great philosopher and scientist, Aristotle. It is the idea that the best inventions begin, not with predetermined structure and characteristics, but with a blank slate – tabula rasa - moment of potential. Riversimple set out with a blank slate, to design a car that is non polluting and doesn’t waste resources, for the world in which we now live. Rasa is “a local network car”, designed to take people on their local journeys, in the way that they wish to travel, at a cost that is affordable and without leaving a heavy footprint of air pollution and environmental degradation. Team Riversimple is headed up by company architect Hugo Spowers and supported by some big thinking business experts. The new car was seen being filmed Presteigne and on the road between Pen-Y-Bont and Knighton a few weeks ago before travelling to Swansea to meet members of the Welsh Assembly and then on to London with a featured article in the Financial Times and big reception from the London hydrogen fuel cell fan-base. You can join the Riversimple movement and follow the progress of this clever new car at http://riversimple.com Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
