What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Listing Magazine Scandal

R

EADERS of the highly esteemed Welsh Borders what’s on magazine ‘Broad Sheep’ were horrified to be told on yesterday’s 6 o’clock news that a small portion of the dance listings were not in fact genuine, but actually details about Italian horse racing meetings. A ‘Broad Sheep’ reader complained to this newspaper “If I buy a Herefordshire, Shropshire and Mid Wales what’s on magazine I expect it to contain 100% local listings. I’ve got nothing against Italian horse racing ‘per se’, but I just don’t want it in my magazine”. A spokesperson from the magazine told our reporter “We’re sure this was an accidental one-off and we’re doing all we can to rectify the situation”.

Fake Listings traced to Albania

T

ODAY the whole Broad Sheep listing saga took on a much more sinister complexion when it was revealed that not only the Dance listings, but also bits of the Theatre and Film pages had been found to contain information about horse racing meetings and it seemed the meetings were in Albania! A worried spokesperson from the magazine tried to justify the mistake by explaining that ‘there were an awful lot of surplus race meetings in Albania that wouldn’t fit in their own version of ‘Time Out’ and they were off-loading them onto the European market at knock-down prices”. However this stupid explanation did little to calm irate Broad Sheep readers. One such reader told us “I thought I was going to see Pentabus at Kingsland Village Hall and I ended up watching the 2.30 at a small track outside Tirana”. (The Albanian capital, you idiots.)

South American Llama Horror

Y

ESTERDAY at the Broad Sheep offices there were unpleasant scenes when the Editor in Chief came out onto the balcony to explain to an irate crowd the latest chapter in the listings saga. It seems they have been testing all the listings in the magazine and at least 75% of all sections bear little or no relationship to real events in the Borders. The majority are of Bolivian origin and chiefly about llama racing with the occasional Bolivian pipe music gig thrown in for good measure. The Editor attempted to calm the crowd by insisting that running a free listings magazine in the current economic climate meant he had to grab whatever listings he could. He claimed the Bolivian cocaine cartel had sold him the listings in good faith and had assured him they were from the South Shropshire Area. With the limited staff he had at his disposal, it was impossible to test the veracity of each and every email he received.

The Final Straw Bale

T

HE unpleasant Border Listings magazine episode has reached it’s finale. As many pundits had been predicting, Government testing discovered (to no ones surprise) that Broad Sheep was in fact 100% horse racing. A sheepish Editor told our reporter “I guess the game was up as soon as they spotted the fake dance listings. As a result I have been making plans for the future and have now renamed the magazine ‘Sheep & Hound’ and sold it lock, stock and barrel to Rupert Murdoch. With the proceeds, I have bought Hereford Racecourse and with the council’s blessing, I’m going to turn it into a non-stop, all year round Pop Festival and hippy market.”

philosophy

Think Again, Mr Murphy

N

6

OT the slightest objection to wearing another man’s trousers, nor the faintest whiff of prejudice against people over six foot ten; and as for being introduced formally to the colonel of the regiment, no problem at all. Plus the icing on the cake, the fact that all of this was taking place in the East Berlin Opera House no less – well, what’s not to like? The subject of this month’s rickety rambling concerns something which should surely be a basic part of the National Curriculum, namely, a much neglected Law, yet a Law which touches all of us and which also raises some tricky philosophical questions. We’re all familiar, of course, with a whole shed-load of Laws: Faraday’s Law of Induction, Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation, the ever-popular HagenPoiseuille Law of Fluid Dynamics, and who could forget Datton’s riveting Law of Partial Pressures? But what about the Law that overshadows them all? I refer, obviously, to Murphy’s Law. Or more specifically, the codicil - Murphy’s Revised Law. Murphy’s General Law states that ‘if something can go wrong, it will’. But his revised version is much bleaker: ‘if something can go wrong, you can be damn sure that it already has’. But back to the Opera House and a much-needed word of explanation. I had been invited to the opera in what was then East Berlin by an army friend whose work regularly took him through the Berlin Wall into the eastern sector. One small problem though: nothing suitable to wear. Nothing suitable, that is, for the incredibly posh evening that lay ahead. Ever-resourceful, my chum borrowed a full evening dress for me from a colleague, judging by the trousers, a colleague of at least six foot ten. Mr. Murphy was about to have a field day. The braces which chum had thoughtfully provided were worse than useless, since the trousers were more or less shoulder-length, thus the only way for me to keep said trousers up was to plunge both hands firmly into the pockets and leave them there, come what may. But Mr. Murphy knew a thing or two about trousers and shaking hands with colonels. Murphy’s Revised Law states quite clearly that ‘a man with both hands in his pockets is unable to greet the regimental colonel in any fashion that is recognized as acceptable in civilized society and recriminations will follow’. He was not wrong. Let us draw a veil over the grim proceedings except to say that I have not since ventured into an opera house, so traumatic was the experience. Murphy’s Laws raise the baffling question of whether we should be optimists or pessimists. Ought we to look on the bright side, or always assume the worst? A philosopher colleague was fond of pointing out to anyone he suspected of being a closet optimist that it’s best to remember that ‘when one door closes another

fall off its hinges’. Someone else of my acquaintance – who despite appearances was actually an optimist – used to cheer up morose people by telling them that things are never so bad that they can’t get just a bit worse. Murphy would have been proud of them both. One thing is for sure: whether you’re an optimist or a pessimist it’s alarmingly easy, even with the best motives in the world, to cause something grim to occur: which is why I am always somewhat nervous in the Oxford region. You see, a man scrambled onto my train seconds before it was due to leave Oxford station, asking me if it went to Moreton-in-Marsh. ‘No, this is the Birmingham train.’ He thanked me profusely for preventing him from making a ghastly mistake. ‘Nothing worse’, he said, ‘than getting on the wrong train’. Oh yes there is: causing someone to get off the right train. You’ve guessed it: first stop: Moreton-in-Marsh. Not content with causing this poor man to get off the train he wanted, I was on a train I didn’t. And yes, things are never so bad that they can’t get a little worse. At Moreton station I asked what time was the next train from Oxford. ‘Not till 6.30 tomorrow morning.’ The look of gratitude on the man’s face as he leapt from the train in Oxford station lingers long in the memory. But was Murphy right? Do things always go wrong? Is pessimism the only viable option? For sure, if you are a professional pessimist you will never be disappointed, but you might just be pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, the twinkling optimist is likely to be clobbered on a fairly regular basis. Maybe the solution is to be neither. Simply wait and see what happens. Perhaps Murphy’s Law needs to be amended still further: ‘if something can go wrong, it just might’. Philosopher in Residence

THE HUNT Here in Film Soc. Corner we love a good, moody psycho-drama, especially if it’s Scandinavian, and Thomas (FESTEN) Vinterberg’s THE HUNT ticks all the boxes. It’s a disturbing account of a teacher falsely accused of sexual abuse by his best friend’s daughter, 5 year-old Klara (an extraordinary Anna Wedderkopp), and the mounting hysteria that ensues. Mads Mikkelsen won Best Actor at Cannes 2012 playing the initially incredulous but ultimately enraged Lucas, a newly divorced supply teacher who despite Klara’s retractions is vilified, ostracised and then arrested only to have the evidence exposed as patently phony. But that doesn’t end his ordeal for, as if in denial of their own guilt, the community continues to punish him and his loyal son, Marcus (Lasse Fogelstrøm) with often violent consequences and a masterful final twist.

SIGHTSEERS An unlikely amalgam of Mike Leigh’s NUTS IN MAY and Terence Malick’s BADLANDS, director Ben Wheatley’s third film finds mousy Brummie Tina (Alice Lowe)eagerly embarking on a caravan holiday with creepily considerate new boyfriend Chris (Steve Oram), whose exacting schedule embraces such cultural enticements as Derwent’s Pencil Museum and Crich Tramway Village. At the latter, Chris deliberately reverses his caravan over a serial litterbug, thus launching his career as a serial killer. Initially horrified, Tina finds herself sexually aroused by Chris’s casual homicide, something quickly fulfilled aboard their bouncing love-wagon. Further deaths occur just because Chris wants “to be feared and respected. It’s not too much to ask from life, is it?” Co-scripted by its lead players, SIGHTSEERS melds the British passion for holiday discomfort with equally uneasy aspects of damaged humanity, and to hilarious effect. THE IMPOSSIBLE Plots don’t come much more dramatic than a tidal wave sweeping the main characters into a chaotic battle for survival, in this case the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that devastated Thailand’s coastline. In a visually staggering tourde-force, Henry (Ewan McGregor), Maria (Naomi Watts) and their three young boys are separated by the mountain of water crushing their hotel, the eldest of whom, Lucas, (Tom Holland, the original BILLY ELLIOT), manages to find his badly injured mum. His desperate efforts to get help are matched by Henry’s search for his family, a quest increasingly hindered by over-stretched authorities trying to cope with the tsunami’s physical and human wreckage. Director Juan Antonio Bayona’s first English-language film is a tense, affecting account of hope overcoming huge adversity, made especially compelling by uniformly stirring performances.

food page A Huntin’ We Will Go! The Tally Ho, Bouldon

F

24

OR several years while exploring the villages in the southern end of Corvedale, Mr P would pass the Tally Ho and curse, for it had been closed by the owners in 2006, because, they claimed, the foot and mouth epidemic in 2001 had killed off their business. Mr Pernickety tends be sceptical of anyone who blames external factors for their failures, whether as artist, writer, chartered accountant, stock-broker or pub landlord. In the case of the Tally Ho, this scepticism is supported by the change that has recently taken place there. The former owners, having failed to provide ambience, beer or food to attract enough punters, in desperation applied to their local planning authority (South Shropshire District Council in those days) for a change of use from Pub to private dwelling, thereby to increase its value substantially over the price they had paid – a deplorable practice frequently deployed by un-public-spirited speculators (like the former licensees of the lovely old Ancient Camp at Ruckhall near Hereford), and often depriving a village of its only social amenity. In an unusual display of far-sightedness, the planning authority refused permission for change of use, and eventually the place was sold, with the option only of running a pub there. In contrast to the trickle of customers it used to serve as they passed through its forlorn, neglected bar, the Tally Ho now is thronged with jovial and contented punters enjoying all the benefits and functions of a good oldfashioned country pub. There are four local real ales on offer, all good, except for the Woods. There is no heavy metal soundtrack, no bank of fruit machines, nor a 60” screen TV relentlessly broadcasting the crass exploits of spoiled, peevish footie stars. It does just what a pub should do in offering a home-from-home, in which a wide cross-section of the surrounding community can mingle in comfort and equality. It’s true to say that money has been spent in tidying up the place, but in such a way as not to lose those important characteristics. It is furnished pleasingly with unpretentious, genuine old tables and chairs and even the odd dark-lacquered ‘pub’ chair and Ikea-esque table which suggests a laudable desire not to be beholden to any Country Living style monitors. On walls papered in ’60s Sanderson patterns are arranged diverse ornaments – a few token (and possibly ironic) horse brasses, hunting boots, photos of stars of popular TV soaps and cosy old lamps. The loos, always a key guide to the essential psyche of a place, have been tastefully tiled, Farrowed and Balled with framed sepia postcards and Giles cartoons on the wall. Like the interior of the pub, the food on offer is almost self-consciously retro and un-elitist. Mr P appreciates a menu which is honest and good value and makes no grandiloquent gastro claims nor boasts in weasely terms that all ingredients have been ‘locally sourced’ and every dish is ‘home-made’. Mr P and his Lovely Companion were placed on a table near a big, comfortably warm wood-burner. Most of the starters on the menu were around £3.50, and main courses modestly priced at seven or eight quid. Mr P ordered Brie in Breadcrumbs with Cranberry sauce, the LC, Breaded Salmon Bites. Mr P enjoyed his Brie and found nothing to object to in believing it had been bought

in, especially as no misleading claims had been made. The LC, on the other hand, did grumble a little about the lack of salmon and preponderance of crumbs in her Salmon Bites. Mr P was beginning to sense a hint of irony in the style of food and its manner of serving as he was confronted with a plate containing a good rib-eye steak, cooked rare, as ordered, (although with no crisp browning on the outside) along with an array of vegetables such as he hadn’t seen for about twenty years. There was nothing about the dish to deter a rustic trencherman whose dining enjoyment is determined by the height of the food on his plate. With the steak, and almost overwhelming it, was a mountain of grilled tomatoes, battered onion rings, mushrooms, salad and chips. The LC, who had ordered a gammon, had all the above, plus an Abigail’s Party slice of pineapple. Like Mr P, she had no complaints about the meat, and admired what she judged to be the obvious home-made qualities of the chips. Sadly quite a lot of the accoutrements went back on the plate, not because they didn’t taste good, simply because there was so much of them. They also had a bottle of Tall Horse South African Cab Sauv, drinkable and agreeably priced at £11.95, the unused part if which they took home in a doggy bottle. Pudding seemed like a tall order after the agricultural proportions of their main courses, but duty demanded that they try at least one, and Mr P, following the LC’s wishes, ordered a Lemon Posset. She was frankly disappointed. There was a taste of lemon about it, but its texture, like under-hydrated Polyfilla, let it down, where it should, Mr P gathered, have been light, even fluffy. Despite these small cavils, Mr P enjoyed his visit very much, and heartily appreciated the landlords’ efforts in offering an honest, unpretentious and very good value menu, as well as the kind of genuine pub ambience which has become sadly rare these days. And the LC is keen to go back and take advantage of the £5 children’s portions, (not for herself, but for the Children’s Menu Consultant). Mr Pernickity - www.misterpernickety.com

Went’s (Wentes) Meadow & The Community Orchards E

50

VERY place has a history. It is a history that we tend to tell from the perspective of fellow humans, but if the Pale Tusker moth, recently found living happily in the community orchards of Went’s Meadow, were able to speak, perhaps it would tell a very different tale. I don’t actually know. This particular moth has refused to speak to journalists. Presteigne has a proud and turbulent history, including battles and sieges and all manner of skirmishes between Marcher lords, famous Princes and the spirited Owain Glyndwr, not to mention numerous town council elections and other local incidents. By the 19th century, the Went family appears in the pages of Presteigne history. Francis Went, for example, was a blacksmith and he had the contract for “ironing” the prisoners in the County Gaol. William Went 1791 - 1857, on the other hand, was a baker and inspector of weights and measures. This is the family who gave their name to Presteigne’s much loved meadow. Skipping a century or so, the Presteigne time team re-appears, tardis-like, in the year 1990 AD. In this year, Colin Kirkby approached Trevor Price who kindly agreed to sell Presteigne and Norton Town Council the three acres of Lower Went’s Meadow, which was opened for the use of the Town in 1992. Then, in 1996, Arthur Wilding kindly offered to sell Upper Went’s Meadow to the town. Eddie Taylor organised the fundraising and funds were found to buy it in 1997. Today, it is community land, owned and maintained by Presteigne and Norton Town Council and lying between the south bank of the River Lugg and the north-western edge of Presteigne. Over the years, the meadow has acquired a community barn surrounded by the Ligne garden (dedicated to our Twinned town in France), a skate board park, a mountain bike track, allotments, a stage area, a totem pole carved by a wood carver called Harry and a big wooden crocodile or is it actually a giant lizard? Green Door is not sure. Many events are held in Went’s Meadow, including the fantastic annual festival called Sheep Music. But this is the story of the Community Orchard on Went’s Meadow. Millennium Orchard & Mill End Cider Orchard 2000 Traditional orchards are a much loved and important part of our countryside, providing delicious fruit to eat, and also refuge for all kinds of plants, insects, birds and small animals. Sadly, although they were once a common sight in the landscape, many traditional orchards have now gone. So in December & January 2000/01 the Town Council planted a new orchard on Went’s Meadow, which was paid for by a grant of £725 from The Trees for Life Programme.

Old Mayor’s Orchard 2011/12 In January 2011, Colin Kirkby, Mayor at that time, got the funding to plant another group of trees opposite the Cider Orchard. Unfortunately these trees were all stolen and never traced, in spite of a reward being offered. Bulmers then kindly donated 3 dessert apple trees and John Wilding gave 4 damsons, 2 walnuts, a mulberry and a quince to replace them. In early spring 2012, this section was extended, with more half-standard trees bought from the Bulmer’s nurseries. The trees are widely spaced to leave ample spacing for events. When the fruit is ripe, it’s there for anyone to help themselves. Presteigne’s Orchardeers hold regular seasonal events on the meadow: Pruning in spring Apple Day in autumn Wassail in winter The group have mapped and named all the trees too, with the details available in Presteigne library. This March you are invited to attend the all-important annual Presteigne Community Orchard Pruning session, Saturday 2 March, 11am - 1pm On Went’s Meadow, Presteigne. Everyone welcome. Come along and help and learn how to prune fruit trees. Rachel Francis, Sharpening Pencils

Volunteers Urgently Needed

Just an hour a week with the Powys Good Neighbours Scheme can reduce isolation and make a huge difference to someone who has no friends or relatives living close by. This valuable service provides practical support to older and vulnerable people and enables them to reconnect with their local community and remain independent.
