What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches
Eating in Cars
BROAD T sheep
ONY Ryan is professor of physical chemistry at Sheffield University and is particularly interested in polymers and nanotechnology. According to today’s Observer he has created a laundry additive called Catclo that is about to come on the market pioneered by Ecover. The nano particles of titanium in the additive stick to your clothes, react with the air to neutralise airbourne nitrogen oxide and your clothes immediately start to fight air pollution, thus reducing asthma, lung disease and heart attacks. It all sounds like an April Fool’s joke and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to get an editorial out of it, but I’m passing it on to you anyway. So now let’s move to a subject much closer to my heart - my lunch. These days when I’m out dropping off your Broad Sheeps I usually have two or three other leaflets to distribute as well. Arts Alive, Borderlines Festival, Downstairs Gallery Small Ads 4 etc etc. This has meant I’m finding it much harder, even with the help of my trusty electric folding bike, to actually get round all my drops in three days. To help speed Philosophy 6 up the process and to make sure you, the reader, get your Broad Sheeps on time I Art 8 have selflessly eliminated my three hour lunch break and instead I grab a takeaway Art workshops 12 and scoff it in the car. So I can now present Pete’s three-day guide to takeaways, delicatessens and Cinema 16 beauty spots on the Broad Sheep rounds. By the way, any suggestions or additions Dance 20 to this list would be gratefully received. Food 22 Round 1 - Hereford, Ross, Ledbury, Bromyard, Tenbury, Leominster. Music 24 On account of my legandary ability to stay in bed late, I’m usually in a bit of a rush by the time I hit Hereford. I’m not really thinking about food at this point which is a Music workshops 32 good thing because on the tasty takeaway front the city has not got an awful lot to Venues 35 offer. However, the sandwiches and pies at the Hereford Deli in the mews half-way Band directory 36 down St Owen Street have not escaped my notice and I guess if one then sauntered down to the river by Mill Street and grabbed yourself a park bench you would be Theatre 38 pretty content. But hell, I have no time for that, I need to get to Ross-on-Wye and Word 42 particularly I need to get to ‘Truffles Deli’ at 46 High Street so I can peruse their Green pages 46 mind-boggling selection of sandwich fillings, plus some pretty classy pies and little quichy things. Once again it would have to be down to the Wye by The Hope and Comp therapies 48 Anchor to scoff them. However, you could keep going and head for Ledbury (lots We take no of good places to sit down and eat, but not so hot on the take-outs) or Bromyard responsibility for and the very meaty ‘Legges Deli and Butchers’. On the other hand if the time was the veracity of the getting on you could start looking for some nice cakes for your tea. Well Tough! information herein There aren’t any in fact, in Herefordshire is pretty much patisserie free and going to Leominster will not make things any better. Pete Mustill Round 2 - Ludlow, Church Stretton, Montgomery, Bishop’s Castle, Clun. Mayfield, Stapleton, First stop Ludlow, foodie capital of the Borders. Once again lots of places to sit Nr Presteigne, Powys down and eat, but unless it’s food market day, no decent take outs. I used to be LD8 2LS a massive fan of De Greys Tearoom, especially their dependably delicious Scotch Tel: 01544 260051 Eggs, but they stopped making them about a year ago. I was also enamoured with Email: info@broadsheep.com their pineapple doughnuts and their cream and fruit tarts. Both have also been Website: www.broadsheep.com struck off. This is very disappointing and leads me to suspect that some ghastly little man from middle-management is following me around and purposely getting rid of all the food that I like. What the hell, let’s go to Church Stretton where I can be really enthusiastic. Now listen carefully, on the corner of Sandford Avenue and the High Street is Von Doesburg’s Deli, go in there and buy the sandwich of the day (whatever it is), a still warm homemade Cornish Pasty and a piece of Pecan Pie. No, no, stop. Don’t eat them yet! Stick them on the front seat of the car with that bottle of ginger beer you bought earlier and then drive smartly up the 1:4 single track road to the top of the Long Mynd. Park looking back towards Church Stretton, with the whole of the Midlands laid out before you. Open the window if it ain’t snowing, open the packages from Von Doesburgs... Ahh.... heaven. Next Montgomery and Bishop’s Castle. In both cases lots of places to sit but nothing in the takeaway department to set this ‘pulse’ racing. Day 3 Kington, Hay, Talgarth, Brecon, Builth Wells. Kington has good food shops, but something special to eat in the motor? No I’m afraid not, but it’s only 10 miles to Hayon-Wye, our second 5 star takeaway. Next door to the Hay Deli on Lion Street is the small but perfectly formed Moveable Feast. In common with Von Doesburgs, there is nothing in this place that I wouldn’t happily stick in my gob. This is takeaway paradise of the highest order. The ready made sandwiches and bagels are excellent and any pies or tarts will have been made the same day and are spot on the money. It probably slightly lags behind Von Doosburgs in the cake and desert department, but I can’t thank of anywhere in the area that doesn’t. Now, where to eat it. The obvious place is down by the Wye, but we’ve already done that, so my tip is head along the road to Glasbury and then hang a left just after the Hollybush Inn and quarter mile up that road, you can park up, look back along the Wye valley and get stuck into a Moveable Feast. After Hay, it’s downhill all the way, Talgarth, Brecon and Builth being veritable culinary deserts. (That’s deserts, not desserts).

The Foresight Saga
D
ON’T you just love it when someone tells you confidently what you ought to do? [Warning: readers with an irony-allergy should stop reading at this point, or seek medical advice.] Don’t you find that some days people seem to be almost queuing up to give you the precious benefit of their foresight? Yes, foresight, that’s what it must be. It seems they can predict the future because they apparently can see what you cannot and are therefore able to tell you what to do. My headmaster for instance, a well-meaning sort of fellow, had foresight by the bucketful, so much so he advised me to become a farm worker. He also assured an injured pupil that his arm was not broken, only ‘bent’. Yes, foresight is a awesome thing to observe, especially in people who quite clearly haven’t the slightest idea what they’re talking about. What a bit of luck then, or even the product of divine providence, that total ignorance about a subject is in no way a barrier to having all sorts of opinions about it. Heavens above, if we had to know what we’re talking about when we talk, conversation would be very thin on the ground. For a start it would be the end of all political debate as we know it. The essential thing is to believe what we think we know. After all, you won’t be able to convince others if you have not first successfully convinced yourself. So what about banks? – which seem to be a recurring theme in these articles and indeed in my worst nightmares – they clearly have foresight because they confidently tell us what we should do with our money. Their financial advisers obviously have extra seeinginto-the-future genes the rest of us are without. When he wrote his revolutionary book ‘On The Origin Of Species’ in 1859, Charles Darwin sadly omitted to include a separate chapter on bankers, and indeed on builders, when it’s patently clear to us – though apparently not to him – that both of these groups have a genetic make-up totally different from the rest of humankind. And what about advertisers? They too are not exactly shrinking violets when it comes to telling us what to buy, what to wear, what to eat and drink, where to go on holiday, how to clean the lavatory, and so on. How we managed before being constantly bombarded by advertisers heaven only knows. Let’s just be thankful that
Solar Eye The perfect optical gift for the curious
they have the foresight to know exactly how to get us to spend money on things we don’t need, don’t like and can’t afford. That’s foresight, and then some. Agony aunts: they too have limitless supplies of foresight; they can advise on all manner of problems, which makes some people extremely suspicious. But personally, I’m all in favour of agony aunts. A real fan. Anybody who can make decisions on my behalf and generally organize my life certainly gets my vote every time. There are serious business opportunities here, though perhaps not for the faint-hearted. It would work like this: first you need a van, then a catchy logo on the side – such as ‘Nice Advice’, or ‘Choice Choices’ or something a bit more formal - e.g. ‘Mobile Emergency Decision-Maker’. Or if you have one of those computer gadgets that seem to be all the rage you could set up a – what’s it called? - such as ‘Decision Provision.com’ - with charges on a sliding-scale: e.g. one decision £25.00 or two for £45.00. People would beat a path to you door, eager to shake off the heavy responsibility of standing on their own two feet and using their own foresight. Use yours instead. Foresight has been of interest to philosophers for centuries. They are forever asking questions which involve the future – questions about what we might know in years to come and what we can never know, what we ought and ought not to do, how to create a just society, and the ultimate metaphysical question [according to Woody Allen] – how to get a plumber on a Sunday. But philosophers, like politicians and bankers and agony aunts, have only the thinnest veneer of foresight. Hindsight by the lorry-load, but foresight by the thimbleful. I have met too many philosophers – even ones whose work I greatly admire - to avoid the conclusion that some of them combine awesome scholarship with an inability to carry out even the simplest of everyday tasks. Prof. G., for example, was totally unable to master the electric kettle; Dr. A on several occasion left her baby on the bus. Maybe in years to come scientists will invent a foresight pill so we can all see the future, then philosophers could spend time explaining why this would be the very worst of all possible worlds. Sheep Music 2013
Following this year’s success, The Marches’ biggest little festival is keen to recruit the following key people for next year’s event. FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
We need someone to co-ordinate the efforts of the various volunteers who basically run the festival. The Director will also take overall responsibility for all the diverse aspects of running a large public event and ideally will already have such experience. Although a part-time role (except for the 10-14 days surrounding the Festival), the ability to chair regular evening meetings in Presteigne from November onwards, attend to detail, pitch in as necessary and be cool under pressure is essential. The Director will report to the Sheep Music trustees. Remuneration is subject to negotiation.
SITE MANAGER(S)
Some of our successful 2012 team aren’t available next year, so we need one or two volunteers able to plan, organize, help build and strike the site (tents, staging, electrics, security, catering etc., etc.)
GENERAL VOLUNTEERS
Interested in getting involved as a steward, technician or general helper? Then we want to hear from you! Please contact info@sheepmusicfestival.com with brief details about yourself and the role(s) you are interested in. Sheep Music Limited is a non-profit organisation and registered charity

cinema LAWLESS I t ’s 1 9 3 1 a n d d e e p i n t h e Virginia backwoods the Bondurant brothers, the taciturn Forrest (Tom Hardy), laconic Howard (Jason Clarke) and callow youngster Jack (Shia LeBeouf), are distilling moonshine. The local lawmakers are genially complicit, but the arrival of the preening but violent special agent Charles Rakes (Guy Pearce) seriously threatens their lucrative trade. Following THE ROAD and THE PROPOSITION, director John Hillcoat returns to ruthless characters dealing with changing realities, and although essentially a powerfully effective ensemble piece, Jessica Chastain stands out as a world-weary refugee from Chicago nightclubs and Garry Oldman has a neat cameo role as their mobster client, but it’s the battles between Rakes and the Bondurants that mesmerises us. As impressive visually as for its narrative muscle, LAWLESS reinforces John Hillcoat’s reputation for uncompromising filmmaking. All reviews by Mark Williams

THE KID WITH A BIKE For those unfamiliar with Belgium’s Dardenne brothers – which of course may not include occupants of Film Club Corner, which is where we now sit – their films are a beguiling mix of benevolent wisdom, invariably woven around harsh social circumstances, and KID WITH A BIKE is no exception. The ‘kid’ is 11 yearold Cyril (played with considerable assurance by Thomas Doret), orphaned by his selfish, widowed father and befriended by a local beautician, Samantha (Cecile de France, so great in MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT) who tries to give him a semblance of home life. Unfortunately Cyril insists his dad still loves him but when his attempts to prove that fail, and despite Samantha’s tough love, he transfers his attentions to a small-time crook (Egon di Mateo), with perhaps predictable consequences. 8 Nov LAS ACACIAS (12A) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 8 Nov THE HELP (12A) Whitely VH 01925 730773 9 Nov THE ARTIST (PG) Bodenham Parish Hall 01568 797451 9 Nov THE ANGEL’S SHARE (15) Clungunford Parish Hall 01588 660126 9 Nov THE ARTIST (PG) Priest Weston VH 01938 561425 9 Nov SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12A) Cound Guildhall 01743 761451

ON THE ROAD MOTORCYCLE DIARIES’ director Walter Salles finally puts Jack Kerouac’s Beat Generation bible onscreen, and with the appropriately charismatic Sam Riley (Ian Curtis in CONTROL) and Garrett Hedlund playing Kerouac’s alter ego, Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty respectively, ON THE ROAD burns with the same energy as Kerouac’s groundbreaking text. It begins in late 1940s New York where aspiring writer Sal meets freewheeling ex-con Dean and his gorgeous, extrovert teenage wife, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Alcoholic nights in seedy joints fuel an intense friendship laced with idealistic visions of an unrestricted lifestyle, and thus begins the odyssey that almost single-handedly established the Beat culture. Beautifully photographed by Eric Gautier, ON THE ROAD is ultimately a road movie with a noble heart as well as a throbbing pulse. 16 Nov SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12A) Little Wenlock VH 01952 505888 16 Nov WE BOUGHT A ZOO (PG) Dorstone VH 01981 550451 16 Nov THE WOMAN IN BLACK (12) Dilwyn Cedar Hall 16 Nov SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12A) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415

R PERNICKETY had spent an hour or two in the gloomy surroundings of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, discussing an upcoming date with Mr SawBones. Driving back south along the frustrating sweep of the A49, where older citizens go to see how slowly they can drive without actually stalling, he found he needed the distraction of interesting nourishment. On that road he had often passed a cutesy-looking pub, The Pound at Leebotwood (just north of the excellent Indian furniture and rude statue shop), a thatched, rambling edifice dating, it is claimed, from 1457. Due to a similarity in signage, he was under the impression that it was run by the same people who run The Clive Arms, 10 miles to the south at Bromfield – not necessarily a recommendation. Mr P doesn’t doubt that thousands of his readers have, like him, rattled past The Pound, saying to themselves, ‘That place looks interesting; I must try it some time,’ and then rattled on. Mr P has now tried it on their behalf. Discreet enquiries elicited the information that The Pound had indeed once been run (and heavily ‘re-furbished’) by the people at The Clive. However, they had for some reason (presumably fiscal) about three years ago, yielded their tenancy with Enterprise Inns (one of the less evil of the monolithic Pub-Cos) to the current landlords, Mr and Mrs John Williams. The refurbishment couldn’t alter the charming proportions of this ancient building, but, very regrettably, it appears that that the pub interior ‘designers’ were given a brief (or simply chose) to eliminate all indications of the building’s antiquity and remove the patina of centuries, to replace it with a lot of catering catalogue ‘stylish’ furniture and trimmings. One can’t blame the current tenants for this, but Mr P’s advice, to create a visual warmth and less bogus ambience, would be to start replacing the thicklacquered chairs and tables and ‘contemporary’ banquette seating with genuine older pieces. After the initial distress which such misguided pub refurb can cause, Mr P wanted a small glass of good ale. This can be a problem where the PubCos want their tenants to sell some vile industrial brew on which they can make fat profits. Enterprise, a little more enlightened than the overbearing, bully-boys at, say, Punch Taverns, do allow tenants to sell local ale, which, as Mr P constantly re-iterates, is one of the outstanding joys of living in the Marches, where there is a plethora of excellent small breweries (and a few rotten ones, too, by the way. Watch out for Mr P’s Guide to the Brewers and Cidermakers of the Marches, coming soon). The Pound offers only one real bitter, but a good one, the very good Salopian Brewery’s Shropshire Gold. A wider choice was not offer because, Mr P was told, this was not a boozers’ pub. Mr P doesn’t consider himself a boozer, but he still likes a choice. Disappointed with the interior of the place, Mr P had no idea what to expect from the kitchen, but a glance at the menu raised his hopes. Most of the dishes looked potentially interesting, and Mr P was particularly pleased to see that a sirloin steak on offer was “Mr Wall’s 28 day dry aged” beef. Not wanting an enormous repast, and acutely aware that excessive luncheon can lead to unsightly rotundity,
Mr Pernickety decided he would sample a single dish and looked for one that would test the skills of whoever wielded the skillet in the kitchen. He ordered Slow-cooked soy and honey glazed belly pork with spiced apple relish, with a glass of Chilean Cabernet-Sauvignon on the side. While he waited he asked if there were a newspaper in the house, for he cannot sit for more than 30 seconds when eating alone without anything to read. Sadly, nothing – not even the Sun or the Ludlow Advertiser – was available, so he waited, drumming his fingers on the table and sipping his Salopian bitter. There were no more than seven or eight people eating, and the pork arrived in good time. The first mouthful immediately put a smile back on Mr P’s face. The meat was tender, full of flavour, supremely good, with an excellent sauce to give it an extra tweak. The roast potatoes tasted as if Mr P’s late mother had just taken them from the oven (and that’s rare in most pubs), with perfectly cooked broccoli and carrots. Good enough for it not to matter that Mr P had nothing to read, the dish was a great, and unexpected treat. Enquiring further, Mr P wasn’t at all surprised to learn that chef John Williams has years of experience and a former Michelin Star behind him. How his wife copes with the front of house, all on her own, is a puzzle. It was quiet when Mr P ate there; a busy evening must present a challenge. Mr P was disappointed that she couldn’t tell him the breed of pig whose belly he had just enjoyed, and also at the lack of information regarding the grape variety of the Languedoc wine on offer. But these are minor cavils, and Mr Pernickety can say that, assuming things work as well at busy times, and those with discerning visual tastes can ignore the interior, the food at The Pound is likely always to be interesting, well sourced and supremely well cooked. Mr P considers this place a bit of a find, which he looks forward to visiting again before long. Mr Pernickity

Home. Food. Fire.
N “affordable” home would be one where local people can afford to rent or buy based on local wages; Heating, electricity and water bills are manageable; And people build with consideration for the future. My first home was a bedsit in Glastonbury. My landlords were Lord and Lady Braine and they didn’t like visitors, so if there was an unexpected knock at the door, I had to hide my friend, Australian Rick, in the cupboard under the sink. But I loved that flat, and the rent was £30 a week including fuel bills and roast dinner with the Braines on a Sunday. Affordable homes But what would it be like as a 19 year old today? A recent report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation warns of a new housing crisis in Britain, predicting that the number of people living with parents into their 30s could reach 3.7 million by 2020. And of course it’s not just young people who face this crisis. We all do. For a thriving and healthy community, we need homes that people of all ages can afford to rent or buy based on local wages. Since the recession things have been tough, not just for first time buyers, but for mortgage payers and tenants. In rural areas like the Marches, average wages are relatively low and it would be unjust if folk from very well paid jobs elsewhere were the only ones able to buy rural properties. Affordable fuel bills In 2011 the Centre for Sustainable Energy did a study of people on low incomes in Britain today, who have to juggle their weekly spend to meet needs … “I’ve got arthritis. My hands get cold so I have to try and heat them up. I put the fire on for five minutes then I’ve got to turn it off again because it costs too much... if I put it on my husband goes mental because we have to pay the electricity and gas.” “It’s hard at the moment because I’m on just a small budget and I find that we’re having to sit in the cold because if the money runs out on the meter, you haven’t got any more money to put in.” People are resourceful … there is always one more thing to cut back on to avoid crisis … but as constraints increase, choices get tougher. The same survey found that 65 per cent of those cutting back on heating were also cutting back on food. In these situations, the benefits of well-insulated building fabric make it easier for people to keep warm without having to make sacrifices elsewhere, such as the food bill. So a top priority for any affordable home is serious and lasting energy efficiency and insulation. Affordable for the future The Code for Sustainable Homes was established to improve the environmental performance of new homes in Britain. In Wales, a minimum of Code Level 3 is required for all new builds supported by the Welsh Government. The code works by awarding new homes a rating, based on their overall environmental impact. Level 1 is entry level and Level 6 is the highest. Credits are awarded for energy efficiency and insulation, water saving meas-
ures, use of local and recycled materials, daylight quality, accessibility, protection of local ecology and efficient use of land. Building projects can improve their rating by, for example, specifying compost and recycling bins or solar panels. It’s a great scheme, as long as insulation, draught proofing and ventilation without heat loss comes first. Local solutions Obviously it’s tempting for big building firms to cut corners and boost profit margins, but whilst it requires innovation to build a seriously energy efficient house on a tight budget, it’s what we need. That’s why local people are starting to drive forward not just for profit ideas such as: Co-housing: new clusters of houses and apartments, planned, owned and managed by residents and built around community gardens and shared space. Building costs are significantly reduced by the efficient use of land and local resources. Community Land Trust … local trust set up to purchase land for the community in order to provide good quality homes, which will be kept available for local people and at permanently affordable levels. People who live on a low income in a cold home do not describe themselves as living in fuel poverty, but with the recession, millions more are struggling to make ends meet. We should all be doing something about this situation. If we don’t look after each other and our community, who will?
