OLLY, who’d have Acker Bilked it, we are in the middle of a trad and swing jazz revival. It sort of crept up on me while I wasn’t looking. I suppose I should have noticed the coffee bars everywhere, but I just put that down to another blatant attempt by American multinationals to persuade me that I live not in New Radnor, but in New York. Anyway, too much coffee in the system and the next stop is ‘Jazz’. Not the avant garde Swedish stuff or another failed British bop revival or good old Stan ‘The Man’ Tracey or jazz funk or hip-hop/jazz crossover. No, this is the stuff without any indigestible chord changes or manic high speed drumming. This is proper old time New Orleans blues and jolly World War II swing. This is jazz you can hum along to. It’s Trad Dad! Now as you all know the last British Trad Jazz revival was in the late 50’s when a lot of King Canutes with beards were desperately trying to hold back the tide Small Ads 4 of Rock and Roll that was threatening to sweep away any real musicians that Philosophy 6 could play more than three chords and replace them with Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard. Just for the record, they failed, but this time round, things look pretty Art 8 different. The prevailing norm is hip-hop or Lady Gaga and a bunch of people with Art workshops 12 turntables. So the sight of someone with a licorice stick or playing bass lines on Cinema 18 a sousaphone is pretty radical. Dance 22 Talking of revivals we’re more than a little surprised to be putting on a gig at the Presteigne Assembly Rooms on 13th October for a band that includes Bruce BarFood 24 thol and David Bennett Cohen (Country Joe & The Fish), Roy Blumenfield (The Music 26 Blues Project) and Greg Douglass (Steve Miller Band). Quite what this extraorMusic workshops 36 dinary collection of old San Francisco faces sounds like these days is anybody’s guess, but please come along and join the fun. Venues 39 I did say in last month’s magazine that I was going to write about the Dutch bicycle Band directory 40 outlaws, The Chopederos, but now I come to pick up a pen, I’m not sure what to say Theatre 42 about them. I wanted to meet up with them because I was intrigued by their crazy Word 46 bicycles and was interested to find out why they would spend so much time and money building bikes that were barely rideable. The answer turned out Green pages 50 to be not very complicated. They weren’t frustrated Hells Angels, but just Comp therapies 52 guys and a few girls who loved the aesthetic and craftsmanship that goes into the more exotic chopper motorcycles and who thought it would be fun to We take no apply the same look to the common bicycle. Quite often they are from small responsibility for the veracity of the towns where nobody else is on their wavelength and the club, The Choperderos information herein was a good way of getting together on a regular basis and having a few (or in some cases many) beers and comparing wheels. Pete Mustill They come from all over, Holland, Germany, Belguim, France, Italy, Spain, Mayfield, Stapleton, Finland, Poland, Russia, Australia, America, even South America and for three Nr Presteigne, Powys days we went out cycling around Amsterdam and Harlem, 150 of us all on LD8 2LS weird bikes. Every 10km they stopped at a bar to get loaded and stand aournd Tel: 01544 260051 discussing the bikes. So that by the time we’d finished a 50km ride, they were all Email: info@broadsheep.com a more than a bit jolly. There were two other British people in the group, the bunch Website: www.broadsheep.com I liked the best were the Finns and the lot I liked the least were the French. Anyway the focal point of the whole affair is the bikes so I’ll say no more and just show you a couple of pictures of the best bikes, the one Finnish and the most exotic one built by a rather lonely German guy.

The Next Olympic Hames
I
6
KNOW exactly what you’re thinking: ‘The old buffer has finally lost his marbles; he can no longer string four words together without getting one of them wrong. Olympic Hames indeed! Time to hand in the Olivetti, take up rambling [on second thoughts, not rambling – he does enough of that already] and learn old-time dancing’. Stay thy hand, dear reader. Do not rush into a grave misunderstanding that you might come to regret. You thought – didn’t you? – that the title of this meandering piece contains a shocking misprint overlooked by the faithful proof-reader. You thought it should read ‘’The Next Olympic Games’. Well, you are, to use a philosophical term, wrong. Hames, you see, are part of the harness worn by a horse when pulling a cart: sadly not as yet an Olympic event, which leads me to the main point of this month’s offering: we need some new and imaginative categories for the next Olympics. Not that there was anything wrong with the ones we had. On the contrary we all enjoyed seeing people running round and round, jumping over things, throwing spears, leaping into the air and even trying to knock one another senseless in the boxing ring. All good, clean harmless fun, although why people should want to run for miles beats me. Isn’t that what buses are for? But what about some new categories. What I have in mind are categories that relate more closely to the lives we all live, and to those niggling little problems we meet on the way. Categories that are no less demanding or exciting but are far more relevant. After all, how many of us realistically are ever going to attempt the 100 metre sprint, or go in for putting the shot? [My own record for the 100 metre sprint, by the way, is 50 metres.] So here are some new suggestions for the Olympics committee to ponder in time for the next games: 1. A gold medal for the first person to get through directly by telephone to any local branch of any UK bank instead of being shunted to a call-centre the other side of the world. A time limit must be set: you have just one year. If this seems an unnecessarily long time, bear in mind that the current record is three years, five months and six days. 2. A gold medal for the first person, in any major British supermarket, to find a ‘Fewer Than Six Items’ check-out actually manned. Since this is considered essentially unlikely, the full four years up until the next games are available. 3. A further gold medal awaits the winner of this particularly demanding challenge: the first person to find a menu in any eating establishment of any type anywhere in the UK that is completely free of spelling mistakes or mistakes in punctuation. This exsisting challenge carry’s not only the prospect of a medel but also free lunchion vouchers’ for life. 4. A particularly daunting challenge, but one sure to attract many competitors, would see a gold medal going to the person who could prove beyond doubt that any politician of whatever political persuasion has ever said anything which could be believed and trusted, or which can be proved to have been true.
Because of the unlikelihood of this, the committee would extend the time until the Olympics in 2020, while recognizing that even then extra time might have to be allowed. 5. Not for the faint-hearted, this next category: a gold medal awaits the first person to locate a police officer when you need one. By ‘locate’ the competitors must find an actual officer – i.e. not one on the end of a telephone who might, or might not, be virtual rather than actual; also inadmissible are officers spotted travelling by car. Only a living, breathing, tangible specimen will count. 6. Last but by no means least, the organizers offer not only a gold medal but also a lifetime’s supply of Broad Sheep to the person who succeeds in purchasing the cheapest rail ticket for the journey from Oxford to Thurso. Prospective competitors should be beware that this is probably the most challenging of all the new categories since you will find that the price depends on a breathtaking array of variables: the day of the week, the time of day, your age, the time of year, the mood of the person selling you the ticket, the train company involved, the route, not to mention your ability to go without food or drink for anything up to a week, etc. We all look forward to Olympics 2016 and now is not too soon to start training both body and mind. ‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ was the philosopher Thales’s advice. We could do worse. Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema MOONRISE KINGDOM Very much in the mould of The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tennenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom is yet another droll, beautifully evoked essay in willful eccentricity from oddball auteur Wes Anderson. And naturally it stars Bill Murray. This time Anderson observes an unlikely romance between 12 year-olds Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), she the daughter of quirky lawyers (Murray and Frances McDormand), he a bespectacled orphan escapee from a scout camp commanded by an uptight Edward Norton. Bruce Willis is the laid-back local cop and TildaSwinton a stern social worker who try in their diametrically opposed ways to return them to Wes Anderson’s charming version of reality and as ever in his films, the set-decoration and cinematography are both meticulously wrought means to that end. LOOPER Ever since Back To The Future we’ve waited for another top-notch timetravel movie, and this is it! In the 2070s, anyone displeasing the mafia – yes, they’re still around and still nasty – is sent back to the 2040s where as their younger selves an assassin, known as a Looper, is hired to dispose of them – with suitably minimal consequences. Joseph Simmons (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), is one such hitman but when his next target turns out to be Simmons the elder (Bruce Willis, having a ball), and who then escapes his murderous intent, he’s soon in fear for his own life, and that makes two of them fleeing a very angry mob. Brick and The Brothers Bloom proved Rian Johnson a writer/director of considerable wit and imagination which with Looper he elevates, quite literally, to a whole ‘nother and very stylish world.

SAMSARA Working with his own, personally developed 65mm cameras, Ron Fricke takes us on a breathtaking, pan-global trip – in every sense of the term. Its Sanskrit title roughly translated as ‘cyclic existence’, Samsara lacks dialogue, narration or even a discernible theme, instead captivating its audience with an eye-boggling procession of panoramic images. Stunning realizations of Yosemite Valley and the Himalayas meld with sweeping descents over Mecca during the Hajj, tribal African families appear in stark contrast to a thousand Chinese hand-dancers… and so it goes on. The search for meaning may prove elusive – just like life, then – but the journey is mesmerising and although not the most prolific film-maker Fricke’s work is so visually arresting, so unique, that Samsara is truly unmissable.

HAT the Hereford Courtyard Centre for the Arts was ever proposed and completed by a Herefordshire council is something of a miracle. If it were being proposed today, Mr Pernickety feels, it wouldn’t stand a chance. However, luckily for the people of the county, thanks to a rare arts-friendly mood in the Council at the time and a brilliant first artistic director, its doors were opened in 1998, since when it has delivered more or less exactly what it promised and it’s a successful, thriving arts hub. The eating facilities that were created within the Courtyard showed a less promising start. The concept of a full-blown restaurant in which punters could eat before a show was perfectly sound but could only have worked financially if the restaurant had been strong enough to be a stand-alone ‘eating destination’ in its own right. But this didn’t happen, and for the next few years the Café Bar ceased to be a restaurant proper and limped along, never too bad, though not scintillating, and, Mr P guesses, not covering its costs. For Mr Pernickety, it continued to serve as a venue for a quick lunch or early dinner while scribbling, because the ambience was congenial, bustling but not intrusive, with edible food and tolerable coffee. But about five years ago, a decision was taken, presumably by the council, who operate and subsidise the Courtyard, to try seriously to make the Café work in its own right, and without subsidy. Mr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion visited it for lunch recently to see if this was working. The place was, as usual, busy with people coming and going from various activities, a lot of which, on a Friday lunchtime, seemed to involve a lot of talkative, not say clamorous children. They ordered food and drink, paid and were presented with a numbered spoon in a bottle (an efficient system to which few these days object) and went off to find a table. Aware that the chairs up on the mezzanine floor are far more comfortable and fewer small people are crawling around the floor, Mr P and the LC opted to go up there, where they were struck by what wasted potential lurked there. Where it was busy below, here all but one of the eight or nine tables were empty, perhaps because it is, sadly, a dreary, bland, anonymous space, although providing an enjoyable of view of whatever is going on the ground floor and the shrubland that surrounds the building, as well as an opportunity to gaze at Hereford United’s uninspiring Edgar Street stadium. The LC, a tad unimaginatively in Mr P’s view, had opted for The Courtyard Burger (£8.45), described as being made from ‘Herefordshire beef’ – a term of which Mr P has had to complain before. If the intention is to convey that the meat derives from ‘Hereford’ cattle, which is a specific breed, they should say ‘Hereford beef’. If they simply mean the meat was reared locally, ‘Herefordshire’ is misleading. Whatever it was, the LC asked if her burger could
be cooked ‘medium rare’, but was told that due to government Health & Efficiency edicts, this was not possible. Mr P is aware that rare burgers are possible in many other establishments and therefore doubts that such a statutory ban against rare-cooked burgers exists. The affable young man who took their order that day apologised for this lack of choice, but was confident that the LC would find it delicious, as it came. And she did. She enjoyed the home-made tomato and onion relish; she especially liked the pain rustique bun, and the quality of the chips. Mr P’s sneaked mouthful confirmed that it had been produced from top quality, fresh beef mince, cooked to the acceptable side of ‘medium’. On the day’s specials menu, Mr P had spotted Prawn Frittata with Salad (£8.50). Frittata, as it happens, features on the LC’s culinary repertoire and Mr P is something of a connoisseur of this dish, although unfamiliar with the prawn variation. He ordered one along with glass of good Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. The Frittata arrived in just the right amount of time (quick enough to satisfy need, long enough to confirm fresh preparation), It looked good and was light, fresh and tasty, with a good salad and dressing (when asked for). For Mr P it provided a pleasing moment in a day brought low by the LC trying vainly to buy anything interesting or original in a city which feels a lot more tired and run down than it did a dozen or so years ago. Mr P’s only real cavil with the Courtyard cafe is that, with only a little expense and imagination, more could, and should be made of the mezzanine space, to encourage, more customers to use the place as a restaurant in its own right for the Courtyard Café offers as good quality and value as anywhere else in the city, with or without a show to go to. N Woofferton, just outside Ludlow, it’s autumn and farmers have brought in the harvest and calmly. Similarly, without fuss, the team at Evergreen Gas has been working hard to develop a range of small-scale, modular Anaerobic Digester (AD) plants that convert organic waste into an electrical output and compost. Whilst many AD units are too large and expensive for the average farm, these units are just right, economically viable and generate clean, local energy. Meanwhile at Dorstone, the Wetland Ecosystem Treatment or WET System is being used to purify wastewater at Neal’s Yard Creamery, using renewable energy. Apart from the primary aim of water purification, WET Systems also provide beautiful species-rich wetland habitats and the willows on a WET System can be managed as short rotation coppice to provide withies for crafts or for use in biomass boilers. We are often told of the benefits that come from creating a greener economy and in Herefordshire, quietly and without fanfare, green business and sustainable living is becoming a success story. “Wahroonga” is a Passivhaus, newly built by local builder Mike Whitfield that includes superinsulation, triple glazing, MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery), low energy lighting, re-used Welsh slates, lime render and local timber and a DIY solar Passive House at Cradley is so good that the owner has been heard to admit “No fuel bills … they pay me” More good things (including beer) at The Kilpeck Inn between Hereford and Abergavenny, where they are laying down the challenge for the greenest pub in the UK … “We think our pub could be the greenest in the UK. We have a wood burning stove; solar water heating; rainwater recovery plant for flushing toilets; insulation minimum 100mm in the walls, ceiling and under-floor; double-glazed windows; low consumption appliances; LED/halide lights on sensor or timers; locally-sourced food; and local staff” Meanwhile local GP Surgeries in Herefordshire are inspiring the world in the “Bradley Wiggin’s Travel Triumph’. Dr. Jonathon Sleath of Kingstone is credited for taking the lead, with many other GPs in Herefordshire “joining his slipstream,” so if you must drive your car please drive carefully, being aware that the cyclist you are passing maybe your GP, who regularly saves people’s lives. It’s all part of h.energy 2012 and there is more: a “fungal rummage at the Cart Shed,” where you can learn about the unbelievable world of fungi, nature’s
ultimate recyclers, reclaimers of toxic land, biological community builders and fine soup base … A free Printer Repair Clinic … A visit to Weobley Primary School which is fuelled by wood chips from a nearby coppice plantation … a cycle ride to Wind & Sun at Humber Marsh. Future of Fashion Night is at The Jailhouse club in Hereford … think models, live music, DJ, cocktails, canapés, schwapping and workshops to learn some sewing basics and meanwhile the launch of Herefordshire’s carbon reduction strategy, bringing together the public, private and voluntary sector, will feature a keynote speech from a leading politician. Who will it be? And there is a special event devoted entirely to apples. Some musicians are holding a Greenpeace Party with music from Martin Blake & friends and at Herbfarmacy, a chance to see a range of herbs growing organically which are harvested and used in herbal medicines and organic skincare. Do not forget the grand performance of Haydn’s ‘The Creation’, St Weonard’s Church in aid of ‘Operation Noah’ and the solar PV panels on the church roof. … or Tredilion Market Gardens, Abergavenny that has recently had a wind turbine installed by Green Earth Energy Ltd. The site will be open on the 17th October for you to go and inspect the Evance 9000 turbine and get a feel of the physical size, size of site required and … nota bene …how quiet it is. In all h.energy this year features more than 100 different events and displays for you to visit and enjoy including all of the above, plus tea, refreshments, fine company and “Happy Nappies” … a local group who aim to promote the use of real/washable nappies with a nappy library. Need I go on? The revolution is here. Brochures for h.energy are available or visit www.herefordshirenewleaf.org.uk
