a logramos pasar marzo, con todo su estrés, pagos y dolores de cabeza, para hacer nuestra entrada a abril como triunfales sobrevivientes al mes más duro del año. Y es en este contexto que nos encontramos con el único mes en que, entre todo el bombardeo publicitario trivial, se entreteje el peculiar anuncio de que es el Mes del Libro, y con ello se nos remueve en la memoria aquello que ya muchos olvidaron: lo agradable que resulta acurrucarse una tarde de domingo a leer en un sillón.

Las letras están en todos lados: en la esquina del cuaderno donde se nos ocurrió una idea, en el brazo que lleva un nombre tatuado, en el muro del barrio que atestigua el amor eterno entre Pepe y Bernardita, en los carteles que enarbola la multitud en las protestas, en la agenda del abuelo, en los colores de la publicidad, en el twitter del amigo que nunca olvida agruparlas en un chiste que te mejora el día. Las letras nos recuerdan la chispa del ingenio que quisimos plasmar, declaran amor, exigen justicia y a veces se esgrimen cual poderosa espada… porque las letras también se indignan. A veces las letras se juntan para contarnos historias, para pronunciar

manifiestos, para cantarle una canción al mar. Las letras son parte de nosotros e incuestionablemente su vida perdurará más allá de la nuestra. No sólo las leemos, las vivimos; no las extrañamos, porque todo el día las vemos regadas por ahí. Pero este mes las festejamos. Este mes celebramos que sigan allí, inmutables ante el tiempo, encerradas en un libro… porque ellos son quienes nos enseñaron que los molinos de viento pueden ser monstruos, nos enseñaron que cuando una boa se come un elefante parece un sombrero, que la soledad podría durar cien años y que las gaviotas pueden llamarse Juan Salvador. En este mes, recordémoslos a ellos, los libros, que estarán allí por siempre, con tapas duras, papel y tinta o en pixeles por pulgada; distintas caras, pero con el mismo encantamiento. It is in this context that we find ourselves in the only month in which intertwined amid all the trivial media bombardment, the peculiar announcement is made that April is the month of the book. Thus renewing in our memories that which many have already forgotten: how pleasant it is to curl up on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon and read. grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s agenda, in the colors of an advertisement, in the twitter post of the friend who never fails to group them into a joke that brightens your day. Letters remind us of that stroke of genius that we wanted to capture, they declare love, and sometimes demand justice with the tip of a mighty sword, because letters can get angry. Sometimes letters come together to tell us stories, to deliver manifestos, to dedicate songs to the sea. Letters are part of us, and their life will unquestionably endure beyond ours. We not only read them, we live them; we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss them, because we see them scattered around constantly. But this month we celebrate them. This month we celebrate the fact that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still here, undeterred by time, caged in a book ... because they are the ones that taught us windmills can be monsters, that when a boa eats an elephant it looks like a hat, that solitude can last one hundred years and that seagulls can bear the name Juan Salvador. This month, let us remember them, books that will be there forever, with hard covers, paper and ink or pixels per inch; different faces, but all with the same enchantment. 3

bril ocupó el segundo lugar en el calendario romano, hasta que alrededor del 700 A.C el rey Numa Pompilio añadiese enero y febrero, precediéndolo. Representa el cuarto mes del año de acuerdo al calendario Juliano y Gregoriano, y recibe su nombre por Aphrilis, que es la palabra latina para designar a la espuma, material del que (de acuerdo a la mitología griega) fue creada Afrodita, la diosa del amor, la belleza y la sexualidad, y cuyo equivalente en la cosmovisión romana era Venus. El primer día de abril, los romanos f e s te jaban ce l e b r an d o a Ve nus Verticordia y a Fortuna Virilis, en donde todas las mujeres del imperio visitaban los baños de los hombres para ofrecerle inciensos a esta última, rogándole que los hombres no vieran en ellas defecto alguno. También se sumergían en las aguas de las piscinas para que Venus les regalase concordia y una vida sin excesos. Por otro lado, los historiadores han asociado también este mes con Aperire (“abrir”) en referencia a que, en el hemisferio norte, este mes trae consigo la llegada de la primavera y, junto con ella, la apertura de la tierra y las flores.

pril was second in the Roman calendar until around 700 BC when King Numa Pompilius added January and February before it. It represents the fourth month of the year according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Its root is from the latin word Aphrilis, a foam material which according to Greek mythology, was used to create Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. The equivalent of Aphrodite in Roman mythology is Venus. On the first day of April, Romans would celebrate and honor Venus Verticordia and Fortuna Virilis. Women of the Roman Empire would visit the male baths to offer incense to the latter, pleading that the men would not see in them any defects. They would also submerge themselves in the waters of the pools in order for Venus to grant them harmony and a life without excesses. Alternatively, historians have also associated April with the word Aperire (“to open”) due to the fact that in the northern hemisphere, this month brings the arrival of spring and, with it, the opening of the land and flowers.

El vampiro Louis, atormentado por sus recuerdos inmortales y tal vez como una forma de buscar el odio y la muerte a manos de sus semejantes, decide contar su historia a un joven y ambicioso reportero, quien en un principio lo toma casi como una historia extravagante de un charlatán. Louis derribará su incredulidad con una historia detalladísima de sus tiempos mortales en Luisiana, su encuentro con el, ahora ya legendario, vampiro Lestat; su conversión vampírica, su constante debatir ético acerca de vivir de la muerte de cada una de sus víctimas; la creación de Claudia, su más bella obra y, a la vez su mayor, blasfemia; la rebelión contra Lestat y su encuentro con otros de su misma clase.

Louis the vampire, haunted by immortal memories and perhaps as a way to find hate and death at the hands of his peers, decides to tell his story to an ambitious young reporter, who initially takes it as the extravagant fabrications of an elaborate charlatan. Louis shatters the reporter’s skepticism with a very detailed story of his days as a mortal in Louisiana, his encounter with the now legendary vampire Lestat, his transformation into a vampire, his ongoing ethical debate about living from the death of his victims, the creation of Claudia - his most beautiful piece of work, and at the same time his greatest – and blasphemy; his rebellion against Lestat and his encounter with others of his same class.

Película de culto de 1994 que tiene como protagónicos a Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise y a una joven y talentosa Kirsten Dunst de 11 años. La película relata principalmente la historia de Louis y sus conflictos internos por tener que vivir una “no-vida” maldita, tema que tiene en común con el libro de Anne Rice en el cual está basada. En ambos, los vampiros no son los victimarios indolentes que Drácula hizo famoso, sino seres turbados emocionalmente, víctimas a su vez de sus poderes y del eterno vivir. Esta re-imaginación del tema vampírico popularizó y revitalizó el género gótico y romanticista de toda una década. Para el lector ávido, dejar en claro que este libro es el comienzo de las “Crónicas Vampíricas” una saga de 12 libros, imprescindible si te gusta el género.

This 1994 cult film stars Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and a talented 11-year-old Kirsten Dunst. The film primarily tells the story of Louis and his internal conflicts about having to live a damned “no-life”, a theme it shares with Anne Rice’s book on which the movie is based. In both the book and the film, vampires are not the indolent perpetrators that Dracula made famous, but instead they are emotionally troubled beings, victims of their own power and eternal life. This re-imagining of the vampire theme popularized and revitalized the gothic and romantic genres of the decade. For the avid reader, keep in mind that this book is the beginning of the “Vampire Chronicles” a series of 12 books, a must-have if you like the genre.

En diez minutos más, la Mía estará tendida sobre el piso, desangrándose de la cabeza que tendrá apoyada sobre una almohada de frazadas de nuestra cama común, y yo tendré que agacharme, ¡Claro!, porque estará tendida sobre el piso y por eso tendré que agacharme, y sacarle con la punta de los dedos un pedazo de vidrio de la cabeza, y el resto de la botella estará repartido sobre el resto del piso.

In ten minutes, la mía will be lying on the floor, bleeding from the head that will be supported on a pillow made of sheets from our shared bed, and I will have to bend down, off course, for she will be lying on the floor and so I will be forced to bend down and remove a piece of glass with my fingers that she has lodged in her head, and the rest of the bottle will be spread over the rest of the floor.

Músico, escritor e historiador del arte de la Universidad de Chile, perteneciente a una generación que luchó y sobrevivió en dictadura. Es la metamorfosis de un hijo de obrero ferroviario que tomó el Arte y la Poesía como un buque emancipador de libertades. Su canción “Carnaval” hoy suena en las radios latiendo como fenómeno social subterráneo. Reconocido como uno de los primeros autores en escribir sobre la Historia el Rock en Chile, sus publicaciones son fundamentales a la hora de conocer y analizar el desarrollo de la Música Popular en nuestro terruño insondable.

Libro: Frutos del País (1993): Con un título que parafrasea el nombre de uno de los grupos surgidos en el país a comienzos de los ‘70 es un análisis de la evolución, el sentido y el contenido de ese movimiento en Chile desde

la aparición de rockeros de los años ‘60, como Los Mac’s y Los Vidrios Quebrados hasta la escena siguiente al llamado “boom” del pop chileno de los años ‘80. “Yo tenía una inquietud con respecto a la pérdida de la memoria y percibía que en esa fragilidad estaba la pérdida de nuestra historia musical, de este verbo que cantaba nuestra gente a través de la historia de la canción y que se había perdido”. Canción Telepática (1999, Lom): Obra complementaria que reúne en el formato clásico de entrevista su encuentro con músicos tan conocidos y de culto como Jorge González, Mauricio Redolés, Andrés Godoy, Pancho Sazo, Pogo, Joe Vasconcellos, Los Jorobados, etc. El libro no tiene más pretensiones que retratar a los rockeros chilenos de su generación como líderes de opinión sobre música y otros

Por publicar Boit Tricolor: “Es un intento de escribir sobre música popular chilena y rock entre los años 50 y 60, indagando en qué músicas habían y cómo surge el rock, y el paso previo a la nueva ola. Es una excusa para hablar de la sociedad, para hacer observación y descubrir hechos, acontecimientos y acciones históricas que generaron cambios culturales. El pueblo siempre va sorteando con su verbo, por eso son importantes las canciones populares, ¿Quién pudo contra las canciones de Víctor Jara y de la Violeta, sus verdades son fundamentales, ahí es donde la poesía es implacable?”.

collective loss of memory and perceived that in this fragility was the loss of our musical history, of a lyric sung by our people throughout the history of music, and that was now lost”. Telepathic Song (1999, Lom): Supplementary work that in the classic format of interviews, brings together both cult musicians and mainstream artists such as Jorge Gonzalez, Mauricio Redolés, Andres Godoy, Pancho Sazo, Pogo, Joe Vasconcellos, Los Jorobados, and so on. The book has no other purpose than to portray Chilean rockers of his generation as leaders with opinions on music and other matters. “I felt I needed to make a book that had interviews and testimonies, above all on the periods that were spoken of by a correlation of concrete evidence,” said Escárate. Poetry: Cheap Poetry (2000): “Cheap poetry is what interests me; that which nobody paid for, that which was always there, that which has strong links with reality, with the individual in society and in the city”. On publishing Boit Tricolor: “It’s an attempt to write about Chilean popular music and rock between the 1950’s and the 1960’s, looking into what music was available at the time and how rock emerged on the scene as a prelude to the Chilean New Wave. It’s an excuse to talk about society, to make observations and to discover facts, historical events and moments that led to cultural changes. The people always gamble with their words, this is why popular songs are important. Who could go against the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta, their truths are fundamental, isn’t that relentless poetry?”.

A los libros, ya no es necesario que los prohíba la policía: los prohíbe el precio. / Books no longer need to be prohibited by the police; they are prohibited by price.”

Estas líneas son extracto de uno de los tantos relatos que componen El Libro de los Abrazos, del escritor y periodista uruguayo Eduardo Galeano; pequeñas historias que van contando vivencias del autor, quien encanta por su emotiva manera de referirse a las lógicas de la vida. La templanza de su lenguaje permite tanto el entendimiento como la toma de conciencia de ciertos temas que atañen a nuestra sociedad, los cuales no aparecen a simple vista así como tampoco son mostrados por la televisión, la radio, ni los diarios; simplemente, hay que abrir un poquito más los ojos para darse cuenta que sí están, y que siempre han estado. Un libro que aborda variados temas, sosteniéndose con uno en particular que abarca a todos los demás: la conciencia social, aquella que nos da la virtud de poder ver más allá de lo que quieren que veamos. En tiempos de reivindicación social, de protestas de estudiantes, de la historia que se escribe en Aysén y de huelgas en cárceles, a todos nos llega un pedazo de estas palabras, pues leer a Galeano es un encuentro que amerita reflexión.

These lines are an excerpt from one of the many stories that make up The Book of Embraces by Uruguayan writer and journalist Eduardo Galeano. The stories relate the experiences of the author, who enchants the reader with his emotional way of referring to the logic of life. The temperance of his language allows for both the understanding and awareness of certain issues that are prevalent in our society. These issues are not so obvious to the naked eye and are missing from the debate on television, radio and newspapers. However, we

have to open our eyes just a little to realize that they are present, and that they have always been. The book addresses many issues, holding on to one in particular that encompasses all the others: the social consciousness that gives us the virtue of being able to see beyond what they want us to see. In these times of social protest, student marches, the history that is being written in Aysen and strikes in prisons, everyone deserves a piece of these words, since reading Galeano is an experience that merits reflection.

qué te has inspirado para hacer tus

pinturas?

Preferiría nombrar estos trabajos como ilustraciones, que es la una de las disciplinas que trabajo. Las ilustraciones devienen del cotidiano, tanto como alguna noticia que llame mi atención, como también las historias en la cual Eloy (mi hijo de 5 años) es protagonista. También me he basado en historias y personajes que extraigo de la literatura, por poner algunos ejemplos, textos de William Burroughs y la figura de Erzébet Báthory en textos de Alejandra Pizarnik. Me gustaría agregar que en

conjunto con estos trabajos de ilustración, trabajo en volumen (esculturas de masking tape y diario) que algunas veces cobran vida en animaciones en stop motion. ¿Qué quieres expresar con tus ilustraciones? Es trabajar ciertos temas desde un imaginario personal donde el juego y la experimentación son los ejes fundamentales. Son imágenes infantiles a primera vista, pero que no dejan de tener un tinte medio oscuro. En realidad la forma en que trabaje las imágenes va a depender por ejemplo si es un trabajo editorial o no,

¿Cuál fue tu primer trabajo? El primer trabajo en realidad fueron cuatro libros para la editorial Santillana. Los libros de Historia de Chile para niños, donde se relata la vida desde la infancia de Manuel Rodríguez, Lautaro, Bernardo O’Higgins y Pedro de Valdivia. Estos son libros de cómics orientados a colegio. Si hablamos de publicaciones independientes, lo primero que ilustré fue un fanzine llamado NIKTALOPE (palabra que utilizo como seudónimo) el año 2003. Era una pequeña revista fotocopiada dibujada con lápiz Bic y acrílico. ¿Cuántos libros has ilustrado? A ver, los libros de Historia de Chile para niños que contaba anteriormente. En forma independiente el año pasado hice la trilogía LA MÁQUINA SILENTE. Los libros eran: “ALICIA”, alfabeto de niñas suicidas, “BATHORY”, que trata la figura de Erzebet Bathory, la condesa sangrienta y “AOKIGAHARA”, o mar de árboles, lugar conocido por ser el escogido de suicidas japoneses. Para mi hijo Eloy llevo 3 libros, ELOY, ELOY EL VALIENTE y EL ANIMALARIO DEL DR ELOY. Todos estos de forma independiente. En estos momentos estoy trabajando en un cómic de William Burroughs, que también va para ser fanzine creo.

historia contada a partir sólo de imágenes, no lleva nada de texto. ¿Porque te interesó ilustrar libros de niños? Es que los libros de niños no son mi especial interés. Las historias de Chile para niños fue un trabajo editorial cuya ventaja es que obviamente tiene más visibilidad que las publicaciones independientes, pero más que libros de niños me interesa trabajar con el cotidiano, con las historias más cercanas vistas a través de un tinte irónico y personal. El dibujo pasa a ser una disciplina más, complementada con la escultura y la animación, como decía anteriormente. El tema infantil no deja de estar presente, porque me es difícil separarme del cotidiano de tener un hijo, por eso está presente.

What has inspired you to make paintings? I prefer to call my work illustrations, which is one of the mediums I work. The illustrations are derived from everyday situations, from a news story that caught my attention, to the stories in which my 5-year old son Eloy is the protagonist. I’ve also based my work on stories and characters extracted from literature. To name a few: works by William Burroughs or the Alejandra Pizarnik character Erzébet Báthory. I would like to add that in addition to these illustrations, I work with sculptures made of masking tape or old newspapers that at times come to life with stop-motion animation.

What are your paintings trying to say? It’s to tackle certain subjects from an imaginary personal level where playfulness and experimentation are the cornerstones. They’re childish images at first sight, but they don’t cease to have a dark stain. Actually, the way I work on the images depends, for example, if it’s an editorial work or not, where you are corrected or edited constantly. That’s why I’ve ended up publishing most of my work independently. What was your first job? The first work was actually four books in one, for the Santillana editorial. They are children’s Chilean history books which chronicle the life, starting from childhood, of Manuel Rodriguez, Lautaro, Bernardo O’Higgins and Pedro de Valdivia. They are comic books geared for use in the classroom. In terms of independent publications, the first thing I illustrated was a fanzine called NIKTALOPE (a word I use as a pseudonym) in 2003. It was a small photocopied magazine drawn with Bic pens and acrylics. How many books have you illustrated?

Let’s see, the Chilean history books for children I mentioned earlier. Independently last year I illustrated the SILENT MACHINE trilogy (La Maquina Silente). The books were: “ALICIA”, an alphabet of suicidal girls, “Bathory”, which is based on the figure of Erzebet Bathory, the bloody countess “Aokigahara” or sea of trees, a place known

for being the preferred site for suicides in Japan. So far, I have 3 books for my son: Eloy, Eloy the Brave, and Dr. Eloy’s Zoo. All these are published independently. I am currently working on a comic book by William Burroughs, which also looks like it’s going to be a fanzine. Have you written one? Well, the Eloy series which have very little text, and the comics I’ve written based on everyday experiences. For example, when Eloy was sick, I wrote ELOY THE BRAVE, but it’s a story told by images only, it contains no text. Why

Well, children’s books are not necessarily my special interest. The Chilean History books for children were editorial works with the advantage that they undoubtedly get more exposure than independent publications. But more than children’s books I like to work based on everyday occurrences, with stories that are close to the heart seen through an ironic tint. Drawing becomes one more medium that I use, complemented by sculpture and animation, as I said before. The theme of childhood is there because it’s very difficult for me to separate myself from everyday life, which right now includes having a child, that’s the reason that it is present in my work.

Sale de la ducha y siente en sus pechos olor a mandarinas. Llama para aceptar la propuesta de trizar las ansias y ponerle musgos suaves a las fisuras. Se encuentran y se huelen como gatos. Paran frente a una puerta estrecha detrás de la cual hay tantos peldaños como cariños malos. La escalera tiene gruesas alfombras burdeos y dibujos de flores que esconden las pisadas, las envuelven para que no lleguen a los oídos de las esposas que no saben ni de los maridos que desconocen. Esperan que el tiempo pase, escondidos detrás de las cortinas.

(¡Cuento yo! Uno, dos, tres… diez… ¡Salí! ¡Preso Andrés que está mordiéndome la boca!).

Se le abre el centro mientras se le quiebra la poesía en dos trozos. Alicia sale otra vez de la ducha, ya no huele a mandarinas. Mira el techo y se ríe del cielo hecho en textil oscuro. Se prepara para irse y deja su luna olvidada en ese cielo de mentira.

Los libros antiguos no se exhiben en los escaparates del Mall ni se anuncian en la revista de moda. Sembradas en la capital, aún sobreviven pequeñas librerías que se jactan de conservar en sus estantes rarezas y ediciones que ya casi nadie tiene, y que se adornan orgullosas por encuadernados de cartón en cuyo desgaste se adivinan décadas de buen uso. Explorar sus corredores nos deleita el olfato y la memoria; en algún rincón de sus pasillos se esconde, de seguro, alguna obra que antaño removió nuestro mundo. on Luis Lillo me mira desde atrás de unas gafas que enmarcan un rostro amable. A sus 71 años, se levanta cada día para abrir su librería, rubro al que decidió dedicarse 16 años atrás, cuando un día se percató de que se había convertido en lo que denomina un viejo laboral. Decidió entonces iniciar un camino que finalmente lo llevaría a abrir la “Librería Psiquis”, en el Barrio Lastarria. Si bien considera que no es fácil realizar un diagnóstico del público lector actual, afirma que sí alcanza a percibir un cambio en los hábitos de lectura; en la aceleración cotidiana actual, la gente

dedica menos tiempo a leer, el costo de los libros es mayor y la televisión influencia negativamente sobre dicha práctica. “En este país no existe una voluntad de educación; hay un sistema oscuro, que pretende impedir que la educación se desarrolle. Es mucho más fácil manejar una sociedad que no piensa, que aquella que se ha desarrollado a través de las artes”. Por lo mismo, dice que le alegra observar la rebelión que los jóvenes han levantado frente a un sistema restrictivo, pensamiento que él intenta contagiar cada vez que puede a aquellos que aún no han despertado. 53

Sumergido entre tapas de cuero y páginas ocres, Carlos Vivar, de la librería El Cid Campeador, no comparte que el grupo de lectores haya disminuido de forma considerable. Hace 25 años se instaló con su librería, que con el paso de tiempo ha ido perfilándose como una tienda llena de ejemplares de colección. Igual reconoce que el boom del internet ha frenado el aumento del público, poniendo a disponibilidad en la web volúmenes a los que antes no se podía acceder sin salir de casa. Por otro lado, el dueño de la librería Prólogo, Walter Zúñiga, es un hombre que ha dedicado 55 de sus 75 años al mundo de los empastados. A pesar de que la gente ya no

se toma el tiempo de sentarse a leer, puede jactarse de que su librería en Chile es la más especializada en cine y teatro, por lo que tiene la suerte de contar con un flujo de público interesado en estos temas, que siempre llega a hurgar en sus estantes. Los libros pasan de moda, las grandes editoriales se instalan con mega-tiendas y las personas van abandonando los libros por otros sucedáneos que encuentran en el camino… pero siempre estarán aquellos dispuestos a perderse entre estanterías rebosantes de libros viejos, y para suerte de ellos, siempre habrá un romántico dispuesto a abrir su tienda, porque “mientras pueda seguir subiendo y bajando la cortina –señala Don Luis-, yo voy a continuar trabajando con los libros”.

Old books are not exhibited in shop windows nor advertised in fashion magazines. Scattered around the capital, small bookshops still survive and they boast having rare editions in their bookshelves that nobody else has. They proudly wear cardboard covers that show the wear and tear of decades of proper care. To explore these shop corridors delights our sense of smell and memory; somewhere hidden in these corridors lies a work that once stirred our world. Used books, ladies and gentlemen, refuse to die.

on Luis Lillo looks at me from behind framed glasses with a friendly face. At the age of 71, he still gets up every day to open up his store, a career he chose 16 years ago when one day he realized he had become what he calls a working old man. He started on a path that woud eventually lead him to open “Libreria Psiquis” (Psyche Bookstore) in the Lastarria neighborhood. Although he considers it difficult to quantify a public diagnostic of today’s readership, he argues that he still manages to see a change in reading habits; in the current accelerated lifestyle, people spend less time reading,

the cost of books is greater and television has a negative influence on this activity. “In this country, the willingness to educate doesn’t exist: there is a dark system in place which seeks to prevent the development of education. It is much easier to manage a society where people don’t think than one which evolves through the arts. For this reason, he says to be happy seeing the movement that the young have started against a restrictive system, an opinion that he tries to spread to all that have not yet awaken. Submerged between leather covers and ocher-colored pages, Carlos Vivar from the El Cid Campeador bookstore, does

not share the opinion that readership has diminished significantly. He opened his bookstore 25 years ago and has over time emerged as a store full of collector’s editions. He states that “the number of students has increased ... and those people are potential buyers. Although many do not read for pleasure, they have to read for class and therefore they have to go looking for these editions.” Still, he acknowledges that the Internet boom has slowed the growth of the market, making books available on the web that before could not be accessed without leaving the home. On the other hand, bookstore owner Walter Zuñiga (Prólogo Bookstore) is a man who has spent 55 of his 75 years in the world of the hardcover. Although most people no longer take the time to sit and read, he can boast that his bookstore is the most specialized in film and theater in Chile. So he’s lucky to count on a steady flow of customers that are interested in these subjects and are always looking through his shelves.

Books go out of style, big publishers work with mega-stores and people are abandoning books for other substitutes that they find on the way ... but there will always be those willing to get lost amongst shelves overflowing with old books, and luckily for them, there will always be that romantic who is willing to open up a shop, because “as long as I can still walk and open up my store” says Don Luis “I will continue working with books.”

Antes, para hacer una tarea del colegio con los compañeros de curso, uno debía investigar en los ya olvidados almanaques, lo que incluía una once en casa del compañero anfitrión y escribir a mano de principio a fin con una letra manuscrita que, intentábamos, resultase legible. No podíamos olvidar el lápiz rojo para marcar las mayúsculas, y la entrega del trabajo al profesor debían ser presenciales, en hora de clase. Así, año tras año, las redacciones sobre el Mes del Mar y de La Batalla de Maipú eran fijas, para lo que había que lograr conseguir el Icarito a toda costa, aún cuando fuese uno ya recortado. De seguro a los jóvenes actuales confeccionar un trabajo en estas condiciones les parecería inconcebible; actualmente, se anota en el notebook o tablet el tema del trabajo y mediante un Calendar en internet se fija una reunión con el grupo. Luego se googlea la información y el material gráfico, para más tarde poder sintetizarlo todo en un Word. Finalmente, la entrega se realiza a través de un simple e-mail con un par de copias a las personas pertinentes y ya está. Se debe tomar en cuenta que si bien la forma ha

evolucionado en función de la rapidez y efectividad, algunas veces la información puede resultar poco certera; antaño, no cualquiera podía editar una enciclopedia, pero hoy cualquiera de nosotros puede subir información a través de Blogs o de una Wiki. Sin embargo, algunos aún sostenemos –en un gesto nostálgico-, que nada podrá reemplazar a nuestro viejo y querido amigo: el papel. This column is an invitation to go back in time a few years ago, when the way of accessing information was very different than it is today. In those days, in order to do a homework assignment with classmates one had to research from almanacs now long forgotten, this usually involved a visit to your classmate’s house and a lunch or cup of tea and the writing of everything by hand from start to finish in seemingly legible handwriting. We couldn’t forget the red pen to mark capital letters, and the work had to be submitted in person and during class. So year after year, the due dates for essays on the Month of the Sea and The Battle of Maipu were fixed, so one had to find the Icarito at all costs, even if they were ripped and torn. Surely, today’s youth would find getting work done in these conditions inconceivable. Today, the subject matter is noted in a laptop or tablet and, through an online calendar, a meeting date is fixed with your partners. The information and visuals are then googled and synthesized into a Word document. Finally, the work is submitted through a simple e-mail with a couple of copies sent to the people involved. It should be noted that although nowadays the process is faster and more efficient, it can at times lead to unreliable information. Long ago, not everyone could edit an encyclopedia, but today anyone of us can upload information through Blogs or a Wikipage. However, some of us still argue with nostalgia that nothing can replace our old and dear friend: paper.

“Y siempre, junto a la comunicación, la taza de café inicial que suaviza, entibia y endulza…” (Manuel Peña Muñoz) Desde su origen, los cafés fueron concebidos como un sitio especial para la convivencia, la conversación y la recreación social. Abiertos inicialmente en Turquía en 1554, se extendieron por todo el mundo árabe llegando hasta Europa, donde se instalaron los primeros cafés en el siglo XVII. En poco tiempo, estos lugares se convirtieron en un recinto predilecto de los escritores, intelectuales y políticos. En Chile, los primeros cafés que aparecieron durante la Colonia imitaron a la taberna española y hasta allí acudían los jóvenes para jugar naipes y beber una copa. A diferencia de la tradición europea, la vida social de los escritores chilenos estuvo mayoritariamente relegada al interior de los hogares, prefiriéndose la casa del poeta, el bar, el club social o la cantina para reunirse. Sólo a comienzos del siglo XIX, los cafés proliferaron y la historia literaria y cultural de Chile empezó a escribirse en estos lugares. En Santiago, a partir de 1850 los cafés más concurridos fueron los que se encontraban al interior de los hoteles más lujosos de la capital. En esta misma época la aristocracia buscó otro espacio para reunirse, los hogares. Así, imitando la tertulia francesa, inauguraron elSalón literario, en el que, progresivamente, participó la clase media ilustrada y las mujeres. Por estos años, un grupo de selectos caballeros fundó El Club de La Unión, lugar donde se discutió la contingencia política y, además, se organizaron veladas literarias. En 1879 con gran pompa se inauguró uno de los más famosos cafés de la época: la Confitería Torres, donde se celebró el Centenario de Chile en 1910. A principios del siglo XX, la prosperidad del país se vio reflejada en los elegantes cafés que aparecieron en Santiago y en algunas provincias. En las décadas siguientes, el ambiente capitalino fue de mucho movimiento cultural y social, lo que incentivó la reunión de los intelectuales en distintos tipos de locales –bares, restaurantes, cantinas, cafeterías y salones de té-. 60

A principios del siglo XX, la prosperidad del país se vio reflejada en los elegantes cafés que aparecieron en Santiago y en algunas provincias. En las décadas siguientes, el ambiente capitalino fue de mucho movimiento cultural y social, lo que incentivó la reunión de los intelectuales en distintos tipos de locales –bares, restaurantes, cantinas, cafeterías y salones de té–. En los años sesenta hubo una revalorizaron de las veladas literarias. Este fue el tiempo de las “peñas folclóricas” y sesiones de lecturas poéticas. Sin embargo, aquella efervescencia cultural fue interrumpida durante el gobierno militar con el “toque de queda” que impidió la vida nocturna y provocó el cierre de los tradicionales locales de reunión. A fines de la década de 1980, fueron abiertos nuevos locales de cafés, los que hicieron renacer las antiguas tertulias literarias. En la actualidad, han aparecido iniciativas originales para animar los encuentros entre escritores. Todavía en estos tiempos, afirma Manuel Peña Muñoz, “en torno a una taza de café se gestan ideas, revistas poéticas y ediciones de libros”.

In Chile, the first cafes that appeared during the colonial period imitated the Spanish tavern and the young would go play cards and have a drink. Unlike the European tradition, the social life of Chilean writers was mostly limited to private homes, preferring to meet at the poet’s house, a bar, the social club or at the cantina. It wasn’t until the early nineteenth century, when cafés started to spread that the literary and cultural history of Chile began to be written in these places. In Santiago, beginning in 1850 the most popular cafes were those inside the most luxurious hotels of the capital. During this same period, the aristocracy sought other meeting spaces, their households. Mimicking the French literary circles, the literary Salón was inaugurated, which over time also included the illustrious middle class and women. During these years, a select group of gentlemen founded the Club de la Union, where they discussed politics and also organized literary evenings.

With great fanfare one of the most famous cafes of the day was established in 1879: the Torres Confectionery, where the centenary of Chile was celebrated in 1910. In the early twentieth century, the country’s prosperity was reflected in the elegant cafes that appeared in Santiago and in some provinces. In the following decades, the atmosphere in the capital was one of much cultural and social movement, which encouraged the meeting of intellectuals in different types of premises: bars, restaurants, cantinas, cafes and teahouses. In the sixties there was a reevaluation of literary circles. This was a time of the “folk clubs” (peñas folclóricas) and poetry readings. However, this cultural effervescence was interrupted during the military regime’s “curfew” that prevented nightlife and forced the closure of these traditional meeting places. In the late 1980’s, new cafes opened which caused the revival of the old literary circles.

Since their beginning, cafes were conceived as a special place for sharing, conversation and social recreation. The first opened in Turkey in 1554, and spread across the Arab world eventually coming to Europe, where the first cafes were established in the seventeenth century. Soon, these places became the chosen spot for writers, intellectuals and politicians.

Today, initiatives have been proposed that encourage meetings between writers. Even in these times, says Manuel Peña Muñoz, “in the presence of a cup of coffee ideas, poetry, magazines and books are brewed.”

En la literatura disponible para la gran mayoría de las personas, hay tipos de dietas para regodearse. Además, se habla que algunos alimentos hacen bien y otros son dañinos para lograr el tan ansiado objetivo de bajar de peso, pero ¿Cuánto hay de mito en torno a las “dietas mágicas” que nos prometen reducir esos kilitos de mas en un abrir y cerrar de ojos?

• Implican una carencia de esfuerzo y pretenden resultados rápidos prometiendo una pérdida de peso de más de 5 kg al mes. • Responden a un patrón estético de delgadez patológica. • Surgen de la lentitud y fracaso en el mantenimiento de las dietas “ortodoxas”. • Anuncian que son seguras, sin riesgos para la salud. • Producen efectos psicológicos negativos. • Favorecen el efecto “rebote”. Mito: Saltarse las comidas hace adelgazar. FALSO. Uno de los pilares fundamentales para llevar una alimentación saludable, es mantener una ingesta de alimentos cada 4 horas, de esta manera nos mantenemos más satisfechos por más tiempo y ayudamos a mantener nuestro metabolismo activo. Mito: El pan engorda. FALSO. El pan es un alimento rico en hidratos de carbono que aporta parte de las calorías básicas que necesitas en el día. Se recomienda controlar que la cantidad ingerida no sobrepase las necesidades diarias y no acompañarlo de alimentos muy alto en calorías.

Mito: Las frutas engordan. FALSO. Se debe ingerir 3 porciones de frutas al día. Si se consumen en exceso, entregan a nuestro organismo exceso de fructosa, la cual si no se utiliza se convierte en grasa para nuestro cuerpo.

Bread is rich in carbohydrates which make up part of our daily caloric needs. It is recommended that you watch the amount you eat per day and that you do not exceed the amount needed in one day, and that you do not eat it with high-calorie foods. Myth: Fruit is fattening. FALSE. We must ingest 3 servings of fruit per day. If consumed in excess, it can give our bodies too much fructose, which can then become body fat.
