Activities for May

As we move into May and June, it is interesting to look back and consider all the things that have gone by. We have spent about 160 days or 1280 hours learning, sharing, growing and celebrating together. I am sure each and every person in our school has had an individual mark of success and will find others before the end of June. In the coming 40 school days, we can fully expect more of the same! We hope to see parents join us at many events in May and June. Please watch the updates for the details on our Academy Awards Days, Grade 12 Graduation, Grade 6 and 9 Celebrations, Drama Production, Spring Musical, Sporting Events, Volunteer Day and the final Parent/ Teacher IPP Sign Off Day. To close, this past week we had the opportunity to celebrate with 37 of our students at our 3rd annual Moves Mountains Breakfast. Even though there were 37 in attendance, the sentiment shared could easily be relayed to all of our Academy students and I hope that in the coming 40 days we will find ways to celebrate with them. Below are my closing comments at the Moves Mountains Breakfast. I hope that you appreciate the ‘secret ingredients’ for a successful community of people who are moving their own mountains. Principal’s Moves Mountains Speech When considering how to close this morning’s event, I thought it would be appropriate to answer the question, “How do you move a mountain?” Knowing this mountain is not made of rock – but of individual challenges in learning.

The simple answer is, it takes a community... and in this case that community

includes parents, board members, staff and students. I then thought, if it was that simple, everybody would be moving mountains, everyday, everywhere, all the time, and we all know, this is just not the case. So I suppose the real question is, “What is so special about our community that allows our kids to Move Those Mountains?” To answer this question, I had no choice but to consult the history books and see what others have told us about Moving Mountains. I quickly found that this idea is so powerful that it was first recorded in the bestselling book of all time, The Bible. In Corinthians, Chapter 13, Verse 2, it is stated: “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can Move Mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” Students, I think we’ve found our first secret ingredient, LOVE. Let’s take a moment and thank the parents for the unconditional love they always display. Shortly after discovering the Bible quote, I came across a quote from another prophet, Celine Dion. In one of her songs, she proclaims, “With a little faith, just a little trust, if you believe in love, you can move mountains.” We can thank Mrs. Dion for our next two secret ingredients, FAITH and TRUST. All the success celebrated here today would not be possible without a trusting board and a group of teachers and support staff that show endless faith in each student’s potential. To get our last secret ingredient, I de-
