Rundle Academy June 2017
#WEARERUNDLE
A Message from our Principal As we leave the 2016/2017 school year behind I wanted to take the opportunity to thank our entire community for contributing to another successful year at Rundle Academy. By no means can we say this was not a difficult year; outside of the challenges that being a student, parent and teacher present us through the school year, we were also faced with tragic and difficult circumstances through the events we encountered this year.
Mr. Van der Meer
The mission of our school seeks to challenge our students to reach their potential, and then celebrate with them during each success along the way. To reach these successes, our students must overcome the struggles they face regarding their academics. In doing so, they must develop GRIT and perseverance and feel comfortable embracing mistakes; this is no small feat nor is it an easy undertaking. The support they receive from their teachers, parents and peers helps to establish this mindset and pave the path for their successes at school. The Huichol, a Native American community, living in northwestern Mexico state, “No one stands alone.” In tragedy or in triumph, day-to-day or during an isolated, rare event, the presence of community bolsters us. It’s a credo we can all live by: In our community, we find our strength. In consideration of the year at Rundle Academy, it should come as no surprise that our community was where we found the strength we needed to move forward through tragedy and it has long been the reason that our students encounter the success they are capable of and put them in a place where they can stand in triumph. Thank you to all the parents, students and staff of Rundle Academy for all they do to make our school such an amazing community to be a part of. Have a great summer,

A Message from Ms. Jordan June is a time for celebration! While the month is filled with formal celebratory ceremonies like graduation and awards day, there are many more reasons to celebrate. My hope is that our students are celebrating the skills and knowledge that have gained this year, the obstacles that they have overcome, and those moments where they challenged themselves to try something new- like auditioning for the drama production or utilizing a test writing strategy that they might have once resisted trying.
Ms. Jordan
It is within these moments that teachers are given the true gift of their profession. Student successes become their successes and this only further ignites the drive to become better educators. Moreover, we hope the successes our students have had, both big and small, will motivate them to continue to develop into the best possible learner they can be, a more selfaware learner. The question “what kind of learner are you?” is not always an easy one to respond to; however, scientific literature shows that students who have a strong sense of their learning needs and can accurately articulate these needs, are more likely to have success as they transition into a post-secondary environment. At the Academy, a large emphasis is placed on helping students better understand their learning needs and the strategies they must internalize in order to achieve their goals. In support of this understanding and in helping students to better develop self-awareness all of our high school students will be working through a guided task with their TA this September that will support them in the following: • Gaining a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses based on their Educational Psychological Assessment, • Identifying how to specifically utilize their strengths and weakness in various courses, • Exploring accommodations that can be utilized both here and in post-secondary environments, • Establishing if there is a need for extra help schedules, • Establishing organization and time management strategies, and; • Beginning the goal setting process.
Prior to returning to school, TA teachers will be reaching out to each of their students to schedule 45 minute appointments where they will engage in a discussion that begins the process of developing self awareness. We are excited to implement this new approach as we feel it will best support the transition into a new year and will be something that the TA and student revisit and reflect on throughout the academic year. You will receive more information prior to September, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope you have a safe and memorable summer! We cannot wait to see what 2017-2018 school year has in store for you.

A Message from Ms. Staniloff Accessing Support Services in the Summer The Student Services department at Rundle Academy offers students support in a number of areas. As we head into summer, some of you may be wondering where to find short-term assistance in the absence of in-school access. The following is a list of resources you may wish to keep handy in case you are looking for some help during July and August:
Counselling Resources Ms. Staniloff
On behalf of the Student Services department, I would like to say that it has been a pleasure working with you and your children during the 2016-2017 school year. A Message from Ms. Staniloff Peer Support Peer Support has been very busy over the last couple of months. This group has worked closely with our School Nurse to bring awareness and strategies to the topics of Stress, Anxiety, and Sleep. While promoting strategies about stress, Peer Support contacted the City of Calgary and was given a Youth Service Guide book for each Senior High student. As well, Soft rock 97.7 FM radio, donated enough Soft Rocks for each student. Peer Support is very appreciative of the support given by our community to promote wellness at the Academy, and are looking forward to the Fall to provide further support to our program.
Ms. Staniloff
CAIS Student Leadership Conference Four of Rundle Academy’s Grade 11 students had the opportunity to attend the CAIS Student Leadership Conference held by Toronto French School, in April. Grade 10 and 11 students from across the country were able to collaborate, listen, and learn from each other. Students had the opportunity to volunteer within the Toronto area, and were able to learn about what it means to be a great leader. Our students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and were eager to return and share their new knowledge with their classmates. We are looking forward to the leadership role these students take on next year.

Grade 4, Zoo Trip In May, the Grade 4s travelled to the Calgary Zoo to learn about plants. With a keen eye, Team Carpitza analyzed various goods to determine whether or not they were plant products. After discussing the parts of a plant, the students also explored the conservatory and gardens, wandering through lush pathways and admiring the botanical side of the zoo. The tour ended with a leisurely walk to visit the various furry, four-legged creatures on the premises, including an exciting viewing of feeding time with the local Calgary Zoo tiger.

Grade 5, Zoo Trip On May 31st, the grade five students spent a fantastic, sunny day outdoors enjoying all the wonders of the Calgary Zoo. They participated in an educational program called Wetland Ecosystems where they explored the Canadian Wilds section of the zoo and learned about some of the organisms, both big and small, that call the wetlands home. They also looked at the importance of wetlands around the world and how we can protect and preserve Alberta’s wetlands. The students came home tired but full of information!

Grade 5, Heritage Park On June 14, 2017 the students in grade 5 went on a field trip to explore Heritage Park as part of the Social Studies curriculum. Heritage Park provided the students with a glimpse into the stories and histories of Canada’s past and the people who helped establish and build this country. Students especially enjoyed all of the hands-on materials and visual aids that helped to reinforce what living in early Canada might have been like for settlers. While the weather wasn’t the best, the students still seemed to enjoyed the day and returned to school with a better understanding of our past.

Grade 6, Portable Planetarium In April, the grade 6 students had a visit from Mr. Durbano and the portable planetarium, it was out of this world! The portable planetarium is a large, inflatable dome that allowed students to spent the afternoon looking at the stars and learning all about sky science.
Mr. Locking
The visit began with a discussion about meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites. Mr. D showed the class a real meteorite that had impacted the Earth’s surface; Student’s were in awe of this space rock. “I was surprised how heavy it was!” Grade 6 student Joe commented. Inside the Planetarium, students were able to observe the movement of the sky’s stars in fast-forward. The rising and setting sun raced past from the western sky to the eastern sky. The students favourite sight was when all of the constellations of the night sky were illuminated. Students couldn't help but point out their favourites as they passed by: Draco, Aquarius, Ursa Major, and Cepheus.
Ms. Falkenberg
Thank you to Mrs. Thompson for organizing this fun in-school field trip, to Mr. Durbano for his expertise, and to the students for taking the most out of the experience. For more information on Mr. D and his Portable Planetarium, visit www.skyscience.ca

Student Council Carnival On Thursday, May 25th, student council put on another fantastic carnival. Even the rain couldn’t ruin the afternoon. Students participated in games like bean bag toss, relay races and disc golf. They also got to enjoy themselves on our inflatables, like the velcro wall and the obstacle course. A fan favourite was definitely the bubble soccer, which had wait lines of students from start to finish. As requested, The Sugar Cube, The Happy Truck and Family Squeezed Lemonade food trucks returned for a second year and made it a very sweet and satisfying afternoon! Thank you to all of our volunteers for making this event happen. We’re already looking forward to next year!

STEM Competition This spring, the elementary STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) club concluded with their final challenge. The challenge was to create a container as sound proof as possible with only the material and limitations provided. A team of Gr 5 and 6's then participated at Rundle College at Calgary's first ever elementary STEM competition. Schools from around the city participated in this challenge that saw us replicate the sound proof box.
Mr. Burla
Danika M., Annika S., Hayden W., Nic D. and Mason H. took part in the city wide challenge. The team went through an opening ceremony of sorts, photo ops and planning time prior to the one hour challenge. During the challenge, the team worked together, communicated and used their problem solving skills to develop their product. The resultant container was able to keep the decibels down from a a series of three loud sounds and the judges scored them high on the science used and the collaboration they showed. Great work, team and great work STEM club this year!

Robin Hood Our spring production was a campy and action-packed performance of the classic tale of Robin Hood. Our hero, faced with numerous villains abusing power and wealth, brought together a ragtag band of outlaws to save the day, and ultimately tell a story of the underdog in the face of corruption.

Jr. High OEE The Junior high OEE class has had a very busy spring. Cycling lessons began in early April cumulating with a full day cycling trip along the Bow river pathway hitting many famous sights and location along the way. The students had a fabulous day on our full day hike at Grassi Lakes near Canmore. We had the opportunity to see the ancient coral reef, emerald green mountain lakes and some usually elusive forest creatures. The day was a complete success and really brought all the preparations, planning and theoretical components to life. We bear-ly made it back to the bus on time but the experiences along the way will be with our new up and coming outdoor leaders for years to come.
Mr. Palmer
Canoeing and kayaking at the Glenmore Canoe Club has been a great way to wrap up an amazing semester. A big thank you to Ms. Switzer and Mr. Mellor who accompanied us on many of our trips. Congratulations, to all the students and we appreciate all the out of class time you devoted to the program.

Sr. High OEE Senior High Wilderness Option Elk Lakes Hut Trip
Mr. Vesey
On a warm mid May Wednesday, a small group of grade 10’s and 11’s went hiking/ snowshoeing from Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to Elk Lakes Hut in BC. It was a great adventure and a healthy exertion for the 1-night trip across the provincial boundary to the rustic hut. Hard-pack snow allowed us to hike the first 6 km but warm temperatures forced us to put on our snowshoes for the final 5 km. The sun was shining and the views were impressive. Once we arrived everyone pitched in to start fires, gather wood and start cooking. After dinner adventurous adolescence could be heard echoing through the valley and eventually an evening fire and warm cabin calmed the mood. Fatigue allowed for a glorious sleep and we all woke to another filling meal. The hike back tested us again but spirits remained high as we arrived back to the bus just as a spring downpour set in. Our only regret is not being able to stay another day. It was a great little trip and Ari, Joel, Kendall, Jon, Jared, Aneisha, Owen, Adam and Andrew were excellent outdoor enthusiasts. Special Thanks to Mr. Bouma and Ms. Switzer for accompanying us and all their positive energy.

We will travel from February 7th to 13th, 2018 and visit Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa. Teachers and students who have attended the trip in previous years will tell you that it is an amazing opportunity to see first hand so many of the places they have learned about in school! That, along with the fun activities and great food, make this trip is a remarkable experience for students. Watch for announcements about monthly student meetings when we return to school in September. If you have any questions, please speak to Ms. Slipp.

Jump Rope for Heart On May 17th, the students of Rundle Academy Elementary participated in their 5th Jump Rope for Heart skip-a-thon. This year, the weather was not on our side so we had to move our event indoors. However, this did not damper our spirits! The students were divided into 8 teams and went through 8 stations with various skipping activities that included a range of skills. Some stations included team building partner work. Other stations were devoted to developing independent skipping skills. One station fostered healthy competition with an extra long rope that allowed for entire teams to skip together as a group and compete against other teams. The students were able to bring out a healthy competition with a full group limbo contest won by Zara D. in grade 5, as well as, an endurance skipping competition won by Colton M. in grade 6. As a group, we raised almost $2500 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Thank you to all families who were able to support this cause. We look forward to another great event next year!

Kids Helping Kids This year, Kids Helping Kids with the largest roster yet, spent time volunteering locally and raising money for global causes. We have been a busy group!
Ms. Kapitza
Many students spent their lunch hours at school helping make sandwiches for Sandwich for a Story and others made food for hungry kids around the city with Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids. Around the holidays, we collected gifts for different families and made their season full of joy when we were fortunate enough to hand deliver the presents to three deserving families. Over the winter, several group members and teachers spent eight consecutive Thursdays volunteering for Families and Schools Together (FAST). This year we also spread the love across with world through donations to Village of Hope, an organization in Africa helping bring security and care to children and orphans in need. All in all, it was another successful year full of spirit and empathy. The student members demonstrated so much compassion towards others. We look forward to the amazing things the group will do next year.
Ms. Whiting
On a sad note, we are saying goodbye to a group of responsible and caring grade 12 students. These girls have been involved with the Kids Helping Kids group since they were in grade 6. Lego Robotics at Rundle This semester students in Junior High had the opportunity to take a Lego Robotics option. In this class, students worked with a partner to build a robot using the Lego brick kit, design a challenge for the robots, and program the robots to successfully complete their challenge. While designing these challenges, students used several skills such as; communicating while collaborating with a partner and presenting findings, following the scientific process when conducting trial and error experiments, coding using the computer program for Lego Brick, designing the actual challenge, using mathematical calculations to determine programming logistics, and presentation skills when demonstrating their final outcomes.
Mr. Wolf
Of the three groups, the challenges included a robot which held a beverage and delivered it from one classroom to another using a colour sensor. The beverage was held on a pressure plate, which triggered a stop program when the beverage was removed. Another robot ran a program where it would run back and forth on a track while a colour sensor determined if an object came near. If an object did come near, it would trigger an arm which would flick the object back, much like a goalie to protect a net. The third robot followed a given course navigating over a bridge, knocking down a wall and ending at a set location. Over the course of the option, students realized that programming a robot to complete a specific task takes a great deal of planning, patience, creativity, and persistence. In the end, each group was able to successfully present their robot’s challenge to the class.

SH Track and Field On Tuesday May 16th the Senior High Track team emerged victorious with the 1A Track & Field Banner for the 6th straight year. A solid group of athletes committed to giving their best each contributed to the team win. In all, 18 athletes competed in the complete range of running, jumping and throwing events throughout the day.
Mr. Vesey
“It was impressive to wander around and see so many of our athletes excelling in these individual sports,” said Mr. Waterbury. “And it was particularly impressive to see some athletes who do not compete in team sport get involved in track and field.” With the intention to start the track season just after Spring Break, the weather did play a role in shortening our season, but this did not derail some students from gaining the necessary skill to be competitive in some unfamiliar events. With the flurry of activity throughout the day and impressive performances by many, below are all the athletes with top 2 finishes. Sadie* - 1st in Discus & 1st in Shot Put Teagan* - 1st in the 100m Kemar* - 1st in the 100m & 1st in Long Jump Miles* - 1st in High Jump Theo* - 1st in Javelin Rowan* - 2nd in Long Jump Georgia - 2nd in Long Jump Alex - 2nd in Long Jump Quintin - 2nd in Triple Jump (* = qualified for the city championships) A special nod goes to Theo who qualified for Provincials in Javelin with a throw of 39.21m and ventured to Edmonton to represent Rundle Academy where he finished 12th in the province. This track season was very successful and all the coaches (Mrs. Whiting, Mr. Rasch, Mr. Mellor, Mr. Paz and Mr. Vesey) would like to congratulate all the athletes on their efforts, and we all hope to see everyone back next year ready to compete for the Banner again. Soccer The Junior and Senior High soccer teams both enjoyed successful seasons, developing essential skills, like passing and positioning. Throughout the short, but sweet season, the Junior High team experienced many ups and downs, suffering difficult defeats, but ultimately ending the year off on a high with two wins out of their final two games. Despite being hindered by limited personnel on game days, due to a busy end of the year, those Senior High players in attendance were able to gain valuable experience, and develop their talents with unlimited playing time. Summer Camp the Musical Camp Runamok the wackiest summer camp experience you could ever wish for! This summer camp had everything you love and fear about the summer camp experience, from the morning routine, to the ultimate talent show. It’s a place where you have to put away your technology and go on a journey of finding a place to belong. Students put on the big show on May 30th to a packed house. Here are what a few of the students had to say about their experience being in the production.
Ms. Schaffner
What was your favorite thing about the show? Carter - How everybody laughed at the jokes. They weren’t very good but they still laughed at them. Rohan - My favorite part was probably the Try Everything scene, it was a lot of fun! Ella - My favorite thing about the show was probably the Try Everything song. And the scene with the bear. I liked being scared of the bear it was a lot of fun. Were you nervous to perform in front of an audience? Aidan - I was kind of nervous. I was more nervous for the other people that they might mess up their lines, but I was still pretty nervous. Ella - Yes, because I had a lot of lines and I don’t want to forget them! Murray – No, once I got on stage I started to have more fun and forgot about being nervous. What is one thing you would do differently next time? Rohan- Maybe sign up for a role with more lines. But not a major role because than I will have too much attention. Aidan - I would maybe make another scene that had more people getting ready for bed and going in and out of tents.

Rugby12 Graduation Grade On Wednesday, May 24th, the Grade 12 Convocation was held at the Bella Concert Hall. A few words were shared from Mr. van der Meer, who discussed a chicken becoming an eagle, Mr. Rogers, who shared an experience of watching someone fall yet pick themselves up; and our chairman of the board, Ms. Carrie Ferguson, shared her own story of growth, reminding us all that it is not always the destination, but the journey, that matters.
Ms. Phillips
Our guest speaker this year was Derek Kemp. Derek graduated from Rundle Academy in 2005, has since earned a Masters of Global Business, and is currently working for a large international company. The grade 6 buddies sang “Try Everything" under the direction of Ms. Schaffner. Parents, friends, students, and staff watched and cheered as the Grade 12 students received their diplomas. This year, we were joined by Henry Holloway, Sioux Stoney Nakoda Nation Elder from Morley who presented Sadie with a blanket and eagle feather and Lawrence Gervais, Political Representative for Metis Region 3 who presented Sneh with a sash. It was a very special moment for everyone. The ceremony was completed with words from our valedictorian, Dominic. Dominic enjoyed his time in front of his peers, family and friends, after having been in the audience for seven years. He made sure to use all of his extra time and expressed that this class has learned what is means to be compassionate and understanding. Dominic gave thanks for a school where adversity is turned into fortune and frustration into success. Thank you to everyone who helped with the organization of this day; the success of this day is due to a large team of people behind the scenes. The graduates, their families and teachers also enjoyed a dinner and dance on Friday, May 26th at the Palliser Hotel. It was a fantastic evening. Laura and Soren started our meal with grace. Emily and Monique thanked all of the parents for their support over the years and let them know that they are their inspiration. Mr. Yadav responded by telling the graduates how proud the parents are of their accomplishments. Sepp and Amedeo gave a salute to the teachers and William and Ciaran shared some memories of their graduating class. Sarah and Sneh thanked everyone who was responsible for the beautiful celebration, which continued after the formal portion of the evening with dancing, dessert, and pictures in the photo booth. Congratulations, Graduates of 2017, and best of luck with your final exams.

My first practicum was at Janus Academy School, a school for students with Autism. The second school was Renfrew Educational Services, at the Janice McTighe Centre. Renfrew provides inclusive education for both typical children and for the those with a range of disabilities. In the spring of 2011, I graduated with a Disabilities Studies Diploma. During my six years at Rundle Academy, figure skating was a huge part of my extra-curricluar activity and I continued throughout university. In 2014, I performed in the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Enmax Ice Show as a professional figure skater. The Ice Show reaffirmed my love to perform, thus beginning my audition process for, ‘Disney on Ice’. At the same time I also worked in a Kindergarten classroom at Renfrew. My next position was with Autism Partnership. I worked in homes with children and as well as in the classroom. Later that year I auditioned live for Disney on Ice. Unfortunately I did not get the job. I continued to coach and teach skating at the University of Calgary, the City of Calgary, and the Calgary Winter Club.
Hoping to join Disney on Ice, I performed in my second audition. Feeling determined that my execution had improved. Soon after, my stars aligned and in June of 2015, I was offered the opportunity to join the show, “Disney On Ice Presents Dare to Dream!” I toured for seven months in North America and I am currently on tour again this year. Disney on Ice has been on the top of my shelves, sometimes out of sight, but never out of mind, so to speak. In attending Rundle Academy I was taught there are many shelves to go through, but with hard work and determination anything is possible. It may have taken a long time to get to the highest shelf, but it is so worth it in the end!
