Grade 7 Spelling Bee On March 13th, the top 3 spellers from each grade 7 homeroom faced off in the Grade 7 Spelling Bee. It was challenging, with many students conquering some very tough words. In the end, Aidan Highton came out on top. He was able to spell more words correctly than 2nd place’s Zach Welsh and 3rd place’s Andrew Sanchez. Congratulations to all spellers who competed.

AISI Update

With the release of the Alberta Budget 2013, schools across the province learned that as of April 1, 2013, the AISI (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement) project would no longer be a funded initiative by the Government of Alberta. Over the years, Rundle College was fortunate to receive AISI Grants that were available to school districts across the province to develop innovative projects with the goal of improving student learning through initiatives that enhanced student engagement. It is currently Rundle College’s plan to continue our school’s AISI focus for the remainder of the school year: “Literacy: Critical Thinking and 21st Century Learning.” Any programs and initiatives already committed to this year under this project domain will be carried out.

JV Boys Basketball

The JV Boys team faced a tough CCS opponent in their league playoff match up. Congratulations to the team on a good season. Thank you to the players and coaches for their commitment this year!

Wrestlers Finish Season Strong We had three wrestlers from the Calgary High School City Championships qualify for provincials. Graham Fader and Emily Buchanan were 4th and Luc Terrien was a bronze medallist. At the ASAA High School Provincial Championships Emily finished a very strong 4th place and Graham Fader took home the bronze medal. At the Western Canada Youth Championships in Cochrane our top finishers were Lauren Kruger, Graham Fader and Daniel Krayzel who all were gold medallists. Further congratulations to Graham Fader who was voted as the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Next was the Alberta Open age category Provincial Championships where Daniel Krayzel was a bronze medallist and Jordan Wong was silver medallist. The last event was the Cadet National Championships in Saskatoon where Daniel Krayzel placed a very respectable 7th. Congratulations to our wrestlers of the month for February Luc Terrien and Josh Sherwood and for March Daniel Krayzel and Jordan Wong. Great season wrestlers, keep active and stay fit. Look forward to next year.

JV Girls Basketball

SV Boys Basketball

Congratulations to the JV Girls Basketball team who defeated Bearspaw Christian School in the CISAA final. The girls had an excellent season and have brought home the first ever girls basketball banner!

Congratulations to our SV boys basketball team on a great showing at Provincials this year. They won a very exciting overtime game against CCS to advance to the Provincial Semi-Final. In the Semi-Final the Cobras lost to eventual champions Strathcona Christian from Edmonton. The Cobras played one of their hardest fought games against last year’s champions Picture Butte in the bronze medal game and came up 4 points short. Congratulations to the team on a great season!

Grade 11 Trip to Thailand During spring break 21 grade 11 students and 3 faculty members had the amazing opportunity to travel to Thailand. One of the highlights was constructing a clinic/infirmary building on-site at a school in a city named Tak. We spent a total of four days doing a variety of tasks, including moving truckloads of dirt by hand, cement mixing, and brick-laying. Upon the completion of our work days, students from the school expressed their culture and thanks through a number of presentations, including traditional dances. We were all involved in the dances as well. The people at this school for rural students were incredibly gracious and the time we spent there was remarkable. After the four days living off the typical tourist track, we went off to Chiang Mai where we continued our tour of Thailand, including getting up close and personal with elephants! Our time touring in Thailand included a number of interesting, unique and stretching activities. In Bangkok we visited the exquisite Grand Palace, cruised along the canals and rivers and walked up the steep steps of the Wat Arun temple. In Chiang Mai we went to the night markets and visited the Doi Suthep Temple followed by an exhilarating ride on Tuk-tuks (they are surprisingly fast!). We spent some time at the Bridge over River Kwai, the Jeath museum and war memorial cemeteries as well. Our trip included swimming in waterfalls, lots of market shopping, and a good long trek to a Karen Village. We rode elephants (twice!) and became drenched by the local people while on bamboo river rafts. It was an absolutely incredible trip and we have returned home with many great memories.

Taste Of Diversity

April ~ 2013

On Friday, April 26th, the Peer Support Team will host an event in order to increase the awareness and appreciation for diversity within our school. The “Taste of Diversity” aims to do this through the celebration of food! We encourage students of all grades to participate in this event by bringing in food samples that represent their cultural heritage or their country of origin! Students from both the junior and senior high school will be able to purchase tickets for 50¢ or 5 for $2.00, which will allow them to buy sample-sized portions of different food items from all over the world! Students will also be allowed to wear an item of clothing over their uniform that represents their cultural heritage or country by the color of the item or by the nature of the item. This item can be a t-shirt, scarf, hat, etc. All funds raised will go towards Peer Support related activities, events, and charities. This annual event is one of many events that this groups runs in order to create a positive school atmosphere and raise awareness on social issues.

High School Track & Field Senior High Track and Field practices have begun. The practice schedule will be posted in both gyms. To tryout and qualify for the track and field team athletes must contact the proper event coach to tryout for events and attend practices as attendance will be taken. If you are unable to attend practices due to other team commitments, but would still like to compete with the team, talk to your event coach. Athletes will be expected to attend at least one practice per week. Thursday after school will be the mandatory practice date for sprinters and distance runners. If you are unable to make this practice, talk to Mrs. McClements and/or Ms. Pidkowa. Also new this year, we will have three practice sessions at Glenmore Athletic Park (April 29, May 6 & May 13) for interested athletes from 4:00-5:00. Students need to complete a permission form if they wish to attend these practices. Our CISAA meet will be held at Glenmore Athletic Park on Friday, May 17. The City Championships will be on Saturday, May 25. Coaches: Springs/Hurdles –Mrs. McClements Distance – Ms. Pidkowa Throwing – Mr. Domstad Jumping – Ms. Adolphe Practice Schedule: Please note that practice times may be changed due to weather or school events.

*There is a place for everyone on this team. We look forward to another great season.

Senior High Art Trip

Graham Fader has been enjoying a successful wrestling season. He is representing Rundle College at the Provincial Championships in early March after a successful City Championships. It has been impressive with how well Graham is balancing athletics and academics. As such, he is a model student athlete. Graham is always looking for ways to improve and he is becoming a leader in the school community. Morgan Saunders has shown tremendous growth in character, leadership and skill as a member of the SV Girls Basketball team. Prior to breaking her foot, she worked her way up to being a significant member of this team. After her injury, she found a very positive way to contribute to her team by being a leader, and by supporting her team mates with positive energy. Danielle Fung has been playing on the JV Girls basketball team since November and has taken on the role of team captain. She is always looking for ways to improve herself, and, as a result, was given a spot on the SV Girls Basketball Provincial Roster. Danielle has displayed her leadership in this area of the school and has been very successful. Danielle embraced all opportunities to improve herself as not only a basketball player but as a student and leader in the community. Garrett Merz has demonstrated an enormous level of personal growth in the last few months both in the classroom and in his contribution to the Rundle College community, particularly through his involvement in the CAUSE club, where he starred in a promotional video and brought his enthusiasm to other club duties. Garrett is embracing the opportunity to be a positive leader in our school with a capacity to help and inspire others. Melissa Guenette has had a very successful year this year as Head Girl and as one of the captains of this year’s SV Girls Basketball team. Melissa takes on these leadership roles very seriously and as a result, makes positive contributions to her school, her team and her community. Melissa has done a great job of balancing all of her responsibilities as a student athlete. While not only being a top academic student, Devon Keys has had tremendous success this year as a member of the SV Girls Basketball team. Consistently the leading scorer, Devon has lead her team to victory and as a result, a position at this year’s 2A Girls Basketball Provincials in La Crete next week. Devon has been working on her leadership skills and through her hard work has grown tremendously as a person.

On Wednesday February 27th Art students and senior Art Club members traveled to Lethbridge to participate in the U of L’s Fine Art Day. Students were able to experience workshops in areas of art, music, new media, digital audio arts and drama, tour Fine Art facilities, tour U of L campus, and meet professors and students. The day was a success as students were exposed to university life as they participated in a day of activities and information sessions. One of the greatest parts was seeing university students engaged in the learning of their subject choice and the variety of possibilities available.

PREFECTS 2013-2014 The Prefects is a student leadership group first started at Rundle College in 1999 after two Grade 12 students attended a leadership conference. They returned to the school excited and filled with ideas of how to make their school a better place. One of their ideas was to establish a form of student council, known as Prefects, that would help to facilitate activities, fundraisers and special events in the school. April ~ 2013

If a student is not selected as a Prefect in their Grade 10 year, there is the opportunity for them to apply in both their Grade 11 and 12 year. As part of the application process, current Prefects need to apply each year. The Prefect group accepts students with a variety of interests, who have a strong desire to take on the demands of a leadership role and contribute to the school.

Do you want to be a Prefect next year? Do you want to be an ambassador to the school and influence school culture? Would you like to help plan school events? If so, send in an application letter to Mr. Goettel or Mrs. McClements by Thursday, May 9. Your application letter should include: Past leadership roles you have taken on in the school and outside the school. How you are going to give to the school community What you see your role as a Prefect will be

i.e. maybe you are going to help lead the school in being more environmentally conscious, maybe you are going to help out new students. Etc. After reviewing all applications, you will be contacted for an interview with administration and the Prefect Teacher Coordinators. After the interview your application will be posted in the school, for the school body to read. During the beginning of June, the grade 10’s, grade 11’s, administration, and teachers will vote on who will be the Prefect representatives for grade 11 and grade 12 next year. If you have any questions, please talk to Mr.Goettel or Mrs. McClements. PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL NEWS The PAC would like to bring your attention to the new flagpole that is being installed at our football field. We would like to thank Ryan Finn for the great idea and Corinne Wasyliw for coordinating the used uniforms sales that provided the money for this project. The flagpole will proudly display a Cobras flag that will match two portable flags that will be used at school events. Installation should be complete by the end of April. PAC funds have also been committed to out door picnic tables and garbage and recycling containers for the west side of the school. These should be available for use in late spring. Please come to our May 13th meeting at 7pm where we plan to elect our new executive. Many of our current council will graduate with their children and we need participation and input from junior high parents.
