Candy Donation Project Thank you to all of the students & staff who donated their unwanted candy from Halloween! With your help, we collected 54 pounds of candy! Unfortunately, the Children’s Cottage Society was unable to take the candy, but Inn From The Cold gladly accepted it. Thanks again for all of your kind donations!
Last month, all of our grade seven students had a Fine Arts Day at Vertigo Theatre downtown. The morning was spent rotating between different workshops including movement and voice. We also had a technical tour of the facility, including a backstage tour of the current production. The afternoon included an interesting production from Japanese performance artist Kuniko, whose presentation combined origami, folklore, and fable. It was a creative, cultural look at Japan. Overall, we learned a lot about different aspects of theatre and had a valuable and enjoyable day.

Peru Peru draws nearer and nearer! The monthly meetings are starting to evolve from general background and information to more specific microdetails. Items coming up on our agenda include finishing our educational presentations, shopping for clothes and travel items and learning how to pack efficiently, planning the trip T-shirt, and learning about the vaccinations coming up (ouch!). Keep up-to-date with the Peru trip from now through spring break by following @RundleCollegeSH on Twitter!

Grade 9 Boys Volleyball
The grade 8 girls’ volleyball team had a very successful season.
Jr. Varsity boys Volleyball They participated in the Volleydome tournament in early October, The Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball Team completed their undefeated league season in fine form in early November. The team handily defeated Webber Academy in the semi finals and went on to take two straight games from FFCA to win the gold medal. This season was very rewarding for the team. They were champions at Cobra Cup and played extremely well against citywide public schools in tournament play. Mr. Buchanan would like to commend the entire team for their dedication and commitment to the program.
placing 4th overall. They also competed in the Ralley Pointe tournament, losing in the final to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir to place second overall out of sixteen teams. In their ISAA league, the girls went undefeated in regular season play. The week of November 14th saw the girls play three nights of playoff games. They defeated Clearwater Academy and Foundations of the Future north in their first round. In the second night of playoffs, they easily beat West Island College, only to lose a close match to Foundations of the Future south. This placed the girls 2nd in their pool and gave them a spot in the semi-finals. On Friday, November 18th, the girls played Calgary Academy an deasily moved on to the final against the team that handed them a loss the night before. Foundations for the Future south pushed Rundle to a third set in the final, but Rundle prevailed and won the ISAA championship. Congratulations on a successful season, girls. Your coaches are so proud of you and all you have done. The improvement was tremendous, and your play in the final game was outstanding! We are proud of you! Mrs. Helman and Mrs. McKenna

Sr. High Intramural Volleyball Champions A big thank you goes out to those who came out to participate in the noon hour volleyball intramurals. In the championship game, the Dudes came up against the Unemployed Hooligans in a noon hour spike fest. After all the smoke cleared, it was the unemployed Hooligans who emerged as the 2011 Intramural Volleyball Champions. Congratulations to the following team members, James Bouchard, Josh Fehr-Twaddle, Liam Pattemore and Jake McKenna. Dodge ball is the next intramural activity.
The grade 9 boys volleyball team had an extremely successful season, proving themselves as the top team in the city and one of the top teams in the province. The boys won four tournaments this season, including Red Deer Lake, The Volleydome, ISAA league playoffs and Alberta South Central Zones. We played the top public schools in the city at the Volleydome beating Branton, Vincent Massey and then H.D. Cartwright in the final. At South Central zones the boys beat Strathcona Tweedsmuir in two very close sets and then beat Glenmore Christian in the final winning 25-18 and 27-25. The boys worked extremely hard all season to continue to improve and their success was very well deserved. It was an absolute pleasure coaching such a remarkable group of athletes and the season would not have been the success it was without the support of an exceptional group of parents. Congratulations, boys on such an outstanding season.
Senior Varsity Girls Volleyball Well the volleyball season is officially over. We had an amazing experience at the 3A provincials, coming away with more pride and understanding of what a team is truly about. Unfortunately, we did not make playoffs, but we competed with every team, validating that we deserved to be there. We were acknowledged by a number of coaches and referees how incredible our defense was and that we never gave up. One highlight of the tournament was playing against Cold Lake, last year’s champions and this year’s bronze medalists. Until us, the highest points scored against them was 16 and we fought hard, only to lose 24-26. Another highlight was having a team photo on the UFO landing site in St. Paul, wearing tinfoiled covered party hats, hoping to make contact with “others”!!!! This season was extremely successful in so many ways other than just volleyball. I am very proud of the commitment and dedication these girls gave to the team and their school. Thank you to everyone who supported the team throughout the year. Mrs. Cossar

Congratulations to the football team on a very good season. At the end of October, Rundle beat Olds in a provincial qualifier in dramatic fashion. Aaron Gruending passed to Evan Beck with 40 seconds left in the game to go ahead, and we didn’t look back. This win qualified Rundle for the Tier III provincial tournament for the first time in school history; a nice accomplishment for our first year competing at the Tier III level. Rundle lost in Medicine Hat in a hard fought game to end our season on November 12th. Thank you to our graduating players Evan Beck, Josh Muruve, Abhi Toor, and Mike Walls for their leadership and contributions to the program.

Fashion 4 Futures: A Great Success!
In conjunction with the grade 9 BP A+ for Energy Project, the grade 9 students took it upon themselves to organize a traditional Nepalese Market during parent-teacher interviews on November 17 &18th. It was a great success! Over $7000 was raised through the selling of Nepali fashion accessories! The grade 9 students did a fantastic job of organizing, promoting and running the market. Many students even volunteered to come in on their day off to run the sales and keep the event flowing. Ms. Woods would like to thank everyone - staff, parents, students, Board Members and our entire Rundle Community for their support of this event. All funds will go directly to fund the purchase of school supplies, additional solar lanterns and building supplies for our friends in northwest rural Nepal. Congratulations Noah Cooke and Meghan Lim! Thank you Cathay Pacific and West Jet Airlines! Grade 9 students, Noah Cooke and Meghan Lim, initiated a ‘take action’ project by writing a letter of appeal to Cathay Pacific Airlines in hopes of alleviating some of the cargo/shipping costs of the solar lanterns that the grade 9 students had assembled to be sent over to Nepal. Their letter was very professional and well received. In fact, when the H.A.N.D.S (Helping Across Nepal Development Society) checked their baggage in Calgary, West Jet put a plan in motion to cover the costs of shipping right through to Kathmandu! This saved over $700 in transport costs and this money could now be allocated to keeping a teacher employed at a school in rural Nepal. Thank you, West Jet and Cathay Pacific! Grade 9 Leadership Group Attend YMCA’s Peace Medals Awards Amir Sara, Danielle Chang, Safira Keshavjee, Mateo Mendez, Michael Broodo and Ms. Woods were invited to attend the YMCA’s annual Peace Medals Awards in November. We were inspired by the amazing work that Calgarians do day-to-day in making their communities better and better. The students were also given the chance to network during the lunch and meet some notable leaders in Calgary and surrounding areas. Solar LanternsTouch Down in Nepal Nicole Dunsdon and Karen Cuthbertson of the H.A.N.D.S (Helping Across Nepal Development Society) hand delivered the solar lanterns and teaching support materials that the grade 9 students assembled as part of their inquiry into alternative energy sources and solar power. Thanks to the grade 9 students and their talented teachers, over 20 homes in Daya, Nepal were provided with a light. This time last year, this rural community didn’t have an electrical source nor any alternative form of lighting. This year, the H.A.N.D.S group reports that the entire community can now reap the rewards of ‘light’ once the sun goes down. The lights were received with excitement and immense gratitude. Ms. Woods would like to extend a HUGE thank you to everyone who made this great feat possible.

Senior High Citizens of the Month Alex Spurgeon is a very deserving recipient of Citizen of the Month. Since the beginning of the school year, he has displayed his maturity as a grade 10 student. Alex is very kind and respectful to teachers and to his peers. He is a very conscientious student and looks for ways to help his peers by helping them out with homework and academic concepts and most recently. Congratulations, Alex very well deserved. Calder Kitagawa New to Rundle College, Calder has created quite a name for himself in a very short time. If a job needs to be done or a problem must be solved, you will often hear “Calder can do it!” A multi-talented individual, his many projects include technically challenging website coding and accounting solutions, but also creative endeavors such as vector graphic conversions and the yearbook cover design.
Lucas Wasyliw An extremely polite and helpful young man. As an extension of his CTS course, Lucas has become a project coordinator for various departments throughout the school. Even in high pressure situations, when the technology is not cooperating, Lucas is able to remain calm and solve the problem at hand. Great work, Lucas! Ashley Franklin It is hard to adjust to the Rundle routines, the uniform, the academic workload and the culture of the school. When Ashley arrived at Rundle she immersed herself right into the school and took up playing volleyball and wrestling. She always has a calm, sincere and enthusiastic demeanor about her. Congratulations, Ashley, you are truly a great representative of a Rundle College student.
Gwynne Dyer On Nov. 24, Mr. Gwynne Dyer visited our school to discus matters on Climate Change with the Biology 20 students and the Arab Spring incidents with the Social 30 students. For those who are not aware, Mr. Dyer is very knowledgeable in these fields and was recently appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada, the highest honour this country offers. During his lecture on the Arab Spring, he provided intriguing insight on the history of politics in Northern Africa, specifically in Egypt. After the discussion, I approached him with a question on how the delayed democratic vote could potentially affect the political scene in Egypt. His response was that Egypt’s democratic groups would strongly benefit from a delayed vote, so they could strengthen their influence on the electorate. Currently, only Egypt has received a promise for a democratic vote, while the situation in Libya and other North African countries remains to be seen. Mr. Dyer’s theories on the Middle East and Climate Change always provide an interesting point of discussion for the students and faculty.
Michael Gluzsak White maintaining a strong academic average, Mike consistently contributes to the student life here at Rundle by actively participating in music related projects. Senior Band, Jazz Band, Rock Band, Pit Band (and he also plays outside of school)... If there were more bands at Rundle, Mike would be in them! He treats everyone with kindness and patience, and always puts forth 100% effort. Congratulations, Mike! Mike Walls demonstrated great leadership on the football team this fall. He was extremely committed. He was recently honoured with the Football Coaches’ Choice Award. In the month of November, Mike has put the peddle to the medal in his biology course and as a result, has procured most excellent scores on his recent assessments. These recent successes reflect his self-discipline and commitment to attaining his goals.
Speech And Debate On November 18th, nine Rundle students competed at the Sir Winston Churchill Speech Tournament. The following students competed in various categories and honed their public speaking skills in a well-attended, highly competitive tournament.

Alexandra Krug may be small in stature, but she is a powerhouse in her grade. Her efforts and results in her academic classes are impressive, as is her ability to manage her time inside and outside of school. Being an accomplished dancer, Alexandra was chosen to be a part of the cast of Alberta Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” at the Jubilee Auditorium from December 16-24. Leonardo Arreaza is a positive and energetic individual who is well liked by staff and students. He was an integral part of the Nepal Hands Market this month. His persuasive sales tactics and fashion tips were appreciated my many shoppers. In addition to all of his volunteer work he maintains a high standard in academics. He works hard in every class and is always willing to help others out. Leo is an excellent example of what it means to be a citizen at Rundle College. Megan Williams is a charismatic and kind individual. She has been involved in both the Junior High cross country team and is on the Grade 7/8 basketball team. She is a leader amongst the other members of the team and a positive influence on her peers. He is willing to take risks, is proud of what he does, is eager and willing to participate in all school activities and is an extremely responsible and mature individual. Michael has been an integral part of the junior high school drama production. His work with the Nepal Fundraising initiative was also admirable as he was a driving force behind motivating the other students. Mateo Mendez “Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you’re saying.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Mateo truly exemplifies this quotation. He lives with integrity each day at Rundle and rises to any challenge presented to him with poise, confidence and grace. CREATING A GOOD WORKING MEMORY Most people learn best (i.e. have “learning high points”) at the beginning and end of each learning period. So if you study for only one hour straight through, then you have two high points. Instead, try breaking up your study sessions into shorter periods in order to increase the number of high points. For example, consider the benefits if you divided your hour into three 18-minute sessions with a two-minute break between each session. That means you will have six high points! You’ll spend the same amount of time studying and will learn more material.

PAC UPDATE:
FALL ACTIVITY RECAP and LOOKING FORWARD to 2012 Your Parent Advisory Council (“PAC”) has been very busy this fall and is looking forward to keeping up the pace in the new year. Diploma Exams You undoubtedly have surmised from our email pleas that we have spent a substantial amount of time presenting our concerns regarding the 50% weighting of Grade 12 diploma exams and the province wide results of the ELA 30 exam. We have encouraged you parents to do the same. On a positive note, there is now a greater dialogue within the community and with the Minister of Education, Thomas Lukazuk. The Calgary Herald has picked up on the issue – and, our Chair, Wendy St. Louis recently had a letter published in the Herald. Our Secretary, Becky Shaw, submitted a similarly powerful letter in response to a Herald editorial. We anticipate that will also be published. It is hoped that greater public interest (outrage) will be sparked by this press coverage. Wendy also participated in a recent conference call with close to 400 parent council representatives and the Minister. The Minister is in the process of drafting a new Education Act and is seeking public input. In response to a question regarding diploma weighting, the Minister came across unsympathetic. He appears to embrace the idea that lessons of academic rigor demanded by diploma exams outweigh any disadvantages to Alberta students for university acceptance. That said, he does want to hear what parents have to say – so let’s give it to him. For any of you who have yet to have your voice heard, we encourage you to send an email to Mr. Lukaszuk at Education.Minister@gov.ab.ca. Again, PAC letters to the previous Premier and Education Minister can be found at www.rundle.ab.ca/high/pacGeneral.html. That correspondence provides a good explanation of our concerns. Other Matters We have also been very busy on other matters including: • • • • • •
The Casino fundraiser in early October. Thanks to Dean Olafson and Barb Munroe for all their efforts in organizing volunteers. This was a significant fundraiser for Rundle College Society Introducing the new Rundle Spirit Scarf – a must have for all in the Rundle community. Will be on sale before Winter Break – a great gift for those on your list! Canvassing the financing of a student led initiative to purchase Rundle flags Learning about Moodle and PowerSchool – two new technology initiatives at Rundle Holding used uniform sales to raise funds for PAC. These funds are ultimately used for the benefit of the school community. Organizing a staff appreciation breakfast on World Teacher’s Day and staff dinner at parent/teacher interviews.
Upcoming Meeting/New Bulletin Board PAC holds monthly meetings. A variety of items are discussed at those meetings including monthly reports from Principal, Wayne Schneider, and Heads of School, Gary Sylven and Bruce Buchanan. Those reports provide excellent insight into the array of opportunities available to our children at Rundle and also give a better appreciation of matters addressed by the Rundle administration and faculty throughout a school year. Meeting minutes are posted on the PAC website referred to above. Please review those to see the breadth of topics covered. In addition, we are unveiling our new bulletin board!!! It is beside the cafeteria in the Great Hall. We will post meeting minutes there along with numerous other items of interest. Please drop by to check it out when you are next in the school. Finally, you, as a parent, are a member of PAC. Please come out to our next meeting. The meeting was originally scheduled for Monday, January 23, 2012; but, we are postponing that to accommodate a parent presentation of “Dare 2 Care” - a fabulous anti-bullying program. So the next PAC meeting will be on Monday, February 27th at 7 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. Hope to see you there.
