Rundle College “Mobras” Late October and five intrepid staff members decided to “man up” in search of the perfect facial caterpillar...aka the only thing from the 70’s that hasn’t come back into style, the moustache! And thus, the Rundle College Mobras were born…At the time of going to press, through various money making endeavors, including but not limited to hassling family, friends, colleagues and parents, we have raised $1025 for prostate cancer through the Movember and Sons fundraising website.
Despite numerous threats from their wives, this intrepid team has championed the cause and broken through the “itch barrier.” Our sincere thanks to all donors for your generous “monations.”

S e n i o r Va r s i t y G i r l s Vo l l e y b a l l The Senior Varsity Girls Volleyball team’s season has finally come to a close. Our season was very successful in terms of the connection developed between the coaches and all of the players as well as the personal growth seen in each athlete on the team. We started off our season at the U of A tournament where we were very competitive against a lot of much larger 4A schools. We also had the opportunity to travel as a team to Vancouver and compete in the Western Canada Independent School Volleyball Championships. Not only were we immersed in the spirit of competition, but we got to interact with many other athletes passionate about the sport of volleyball as we were
billeted with girls from the hosting school, York House. After a tough four days of competition, we finished fifth and were awarded the Spirit and Sportsmanship Award. Another one of our highlight tournaments, was our Cobra Cup. Here we were able to compete on home court and finished as silver medalists! In terms of our league play, we finished second in the league after a close final to Bearspaw, losing 14-16 in the third game. However, we had decided to opt up to 3A provincials so we were able to play a challenge match against Queen Elizabeth, which we won, in order to advance on to provincials. Our time at provincials was an excellent learning experience and very valuable to our young team with seven
returning members. We were very competitive in all of our matches, even challenging one of the top teams who moved onto the finals. Despite all of our opportunities to grow as players and experience great competition, the most memorable part of our season was definitely our time spent off the court. There were many great stories, laughs, and fun times had by all members of the team which made for an excellent season. On behalf of all the players we would like to thank our fantastic coaches, Shauna Denny and Ms. Cossar, for a great season, as well as our friends and families for coming out to all of our games and tournaments. Good luck to the returning players for next year!
Grade 9 Boys Vo l l e y b a l l The grade 9 boys volleyball team had a very successful season with multiple tournament wins including Red Deer Lake and the Cobra Cup. The team also finished off their season as the ISAA league champions beating Calgary Christian School in the semi-final and very decisively beating West Island College in the final. The boys worked very hard over the entire season and should be very proud of what they accomplished. The team was also very lucky to have a fantastic group of parents whose help and commitment throughout the season was very much appreciated. Congratulations to the boys on an outstanding season.

Look out for her during the Jr High production helping out with the tech crew and as an extra. Congrats Denisa and keep up the great work! Dare to Care On October 29 - 30th & November 2nd, Rundle College Senior High School hosted The Dare to Care program as a part of the Safe & Caring School’s initiative. This program was supported by the Parent Advisor Council and organized by the Student Services Department in an effort to eliminate bullying and to highlight “Life’s Challenges in Secondary School.” The Dare to Care program is an approach that addresses bullying and other dangerous behaviours in schools. Creating and maintaining an atmosphere of tolerance and respect is at the forefront of this program. Students participated in an informative Assembly on Monday morning. After that each student was part of one of three small groups session. On Friday, Nov. 2nd, a group of eighteen grade 11 students took part in a leadership session whereby they came up with an action plan to create positive change in the school. Dwayne Peace, a retired police officer and School Resource Officer, spoke to all grade 11 high school students, staff and administration about issues that, based on his experience and research, are currently impacting Calgary students. The issues addressed were body image, eating disorders,
bullying, suicide, texting & sexting, the power of words, respect for others, and media influence. Dwayne was passionate about the importance of making good choices in life. His message was clear: everyone has a story; you don’t need to know their story to have compassion, understanding and respect for that person. Students were challenged to make comments only if they are neutral or positive (never negative), to actively stand up to bullying and to make smart choices. Rundle College is committed to educating and providing proactive resources to our school community on these topics. Peer Support members recently conducted bullying prevention workshops for all grade 7 students. At these workshops, senior high students ran activities and discussion groups in order to reinforce a Dare to Care program goal, namely creating a “caring majority” among our student body. These workshops began on Wednesday, November 14th in grade 7 Physical Education classes. In December, Peer Support members plan to facilitate similar sessions with grade 8 students. For more information, please contact Ms. Sarah Dunsford, Director of Student Services.
Fa m i l y Vo l u n t e e r i n g a t To y M o u n t a i n Rundle College family members gathered at Salvation Army’s Toy Mountain warehouse to shop for some of our city’s neediest families. Each shopping team is given a wish list from a family and
then proceeds to look for the perfect gifts from a stockpile of donated items. They did a wonderful job, ensuring that the children from over 30 families will have a joyful Christmas morning.
Grade 8 Fine Arts Day On November 20, the grade 8’s headed off-campus for their Fine Arts Day. Part of the group went to the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre, a facility run by the City of Calgary that specializes in ceramics. The students really focused their creative energy, completing beautiful paintings and scary ceramic dragons. The rest of our students spent the day at the Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. Their day began with a tour of this extensive facility, followed by two workshops. Students worked with a professional artist doing pen and ink drawings focusing on pattern and emphasis. They then had a workshop with a singer/ songwriter where they composed their own original songs. Thanks to all the students for their enthusiasm and respectful behaviour, and to the Fine Arts Department for organizing and funding this event.
Alumni Update Stephen Huang, Rundle College alumnus `08 was recently awarded the prestigious Governor General Caring Canadian Award at a reception last month hosted by the University of Calgary and themed “Building the Next Generation of Community Leaders”. Stephen was honoured by His Excellency for his work with Nepal Vision, a charitable organization founded by Stephen and his family that focuses on the growing problem of blindness in poverty-stricken communities throughout Nepal. Years prior, Stephen, who was involved in a variety of charity work, was questioning where donations to large charitable organizations end up. After discussions with a fellow University of Calgary physics student, originally from Nepal, Stephen decided to be part of the process and focus his charitable efforts on providing eye care and education in rural Nepal. Along with his sister, Katie Huang `10, a Rundle graduate as well, and their father, Dr. Peter Huang, a Calgary-based ophthalmologist, the Huang family created Nepal Vision. Together they began a fundraising campaign that raised both donations and over $216,000 worth of equipment and supplies from large companies such as Bausch + Lomb, Alcon, Seva Canada, Holy Cross Centre, and Calgary’s University Eye Foundation. The three week mission to Nepal this past May saw Dr. Huang teaching and performing surgeries at the Lumbini Eye Institute in the town of Bhairahawa, while Stephen and Katie visited many schools delivering necessities such as generators, televisions and radios. The Huangs still stay connected with the Nepalese families they helped and have future plans to expand their charity work to include missions. Congratulations to Stephen for receiving this most deserving honour and to Katie and Peter for their dedication to charity work. The administration, faculty and staff at Rundle College are proud that Stephen and Katie continue to give their time to making a real difference in our world as compassionate young global citizens. To learn more about Nepal Vision, visit www.nepalvision.org
Junior High LEADERS Council The LEADERS Council has been very active this fall, with members attending conferences and putting on a variety of activities since the start of the year. The Council started the year with a student vote to select new House names. The Greeks won, with Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Digamma taking the vote by a landslide. Once the houses were established and team colours were chosen, we had our first Spirit Day in early November, with each house wearing their colour for the day. Spirit Day was followed with a Candy Jar Raffle leading up to the Halloween Activity Day. Three students won the jars by guessing the closest to the number of candies in each. Leif Berg, Anika Leitl and Hillary Graham tasted the sweet victory of that counting competition. Halloween was a treat as all the students dressed up in the craziest costumes and enjoyed some fun activities in the gym. Screaming, eating, chewing, popping and cheering were part of the day’s activities. Next, many of our grade 9 council members attended WE Day on October 24th. Students spent a day at the Saddledome and became inspired by the several humanitarian projects in local communities and around the world. These members teamed up with the WE Team to spearhead a very successful food drive for the Calgary Veteran’s Food Bank and are currently working on a global project for the New Year. To celebrate the end of the first term, the LEADERS Council organized a school dance on November 23rd. About 100 Junior High students attended to show off their dance moves. Students had a great evening of dancing and socializing. Stay tuned for more events in the new year! The Junior High LEADERS Council members are the following: Gr ad e 9 Nichola s Welc h Nicola Panaccione Rile y McVeigh Alb ert Zhao Ethan Peacock Sahil Gaur Sara h Song Kendal Ruzi cki Mala kai Stro hbach Leonard o Ar re aza Jennifer Chow Natalie McVicar Courtney Bashnick

Grade 9 Girls Basketball The grade 9 girls basketball team began their season practicing with the SAIT Trojans Women’s team, which was a fantastic experience for the team and a great way to start off the season. We also start our league play on December 4th with a home game against West Island College and will compete in three other league games before the Christmas break.
