Grade 7 Girls Volleyball
Grade 8 Boys Volleyball
The grade 7 girls volleyball team has had a great season so far. Along with winning all but one of their league games, they did very well at some tournaments. Competing against grade 8’s in the Bearspaw Tournament, they surprised everyone with a second place finish. They also took gold in their home tournament. Coach Montgomery is looking forward to some exciting playoffs to close the season.
The grade 8 boys’ volleyball team had an exciting and successful season! We played in two tournaments in the city outside of league play, one at Bearspaw Christian School and the other at Clear Water Academy, where we came away with gold medals from both! In league play, we finished the regular season with a 10 and 3 record, showing how talented and driven our team was this year! The ISAA league tournament was held on November 3rd and 4th and the boys played outstandingly, placing first in their pool before losing a tough gold medal match 25-23 in both sets and ultimately finishing second in the league. Your coaches couldn’t be more proud of the sportsmanship, class, dedication and improvement shown by each and every player on the team throughout the season. Great job, boys! We’re proud of you!
Grade 9 Boys Volleyball The month of October has been very busy for the grade 9 boys volleyball team as we have played most of our league games along with four tournaments. The boys attended a tournament at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer on October 14th and 15th and competed very well against some of the top teams from around the province. The boys also placed first at the Volleydome tournament on October 29th proving themselves as one of the best teams in the city. The team has also been very successful in our league play, as we remain undefeated. Our league playoffs are on November 8th here at Rundle College and if we qualify for South Central Zones that will take place on November 18th and 19th at Glenmore Christian Academy. We are very proud of the way the team has performed this last month and we hope to carry that strong play into November. Good luck to the boys as we move into the final stages of our season.
Jr. Varsity Volleyball
Sr. Varsity Girls Volleyball
The junior varsity girls’ volleyball team has had a successful season and are currently ranked number one in their division. The girls have been busy playing at the Dig Pink tournament, a fundraiser for breast cancer research, and have also competed in the Cobra Cup here at Rundle College. Stay tuned for more volleyball action coming on November 14th when the girls play for the league championship.
Congratulations to the Senior Varsity Girls Volleyball team who were the silver medalists at the Western Canadian Independent School Championships, hosted by St. John’s Ravenscourt of Winnipeg. This was a tremendous accomplishment as we weren’t sure if finishing in the top 4 was achievable. Here are a few highlights of the weekend: Winning the Spirit/Sportsmanship Award; unanimous by all coaches! Beating Crofton House TWICE, in round robin and in semi’s. This team has been in the finals for the past 2 years and were expected to win this year. They are also expected to medal at the 3A Provincials in BC. (Devon Keys had the best block of the tournament on match point—the ball hit the floor before her feet!!) Amara Kraft won the best defensive player award—truly outstanding the whole tournament. Maddy McConnell won the team MVP award and honourable mentions for best setter and best server. Kayla Barry was the honourable mention for best hitter. Devon Keys and Mallory Kirzinger were nominated for best blockers. Jordan Ng was nominated for best defensive player and best passer. There were so many memorable moments; the best was simply watching this “little team that could” fighting their way to the finals, earning the respect from all coaches and opponents.

Flag Football Cobra Cup Title Forman’s Fermions kicked and clawed their way through the play-off ranks from 5th place to meet Domi-Nation in the intramural flag football championship game. It was a high scoring, action packed game that saw some great football being played. In the end Forman’s Fermions were able to secure the title by stopping a final extra point attempt by Domi-Nation to send the game into overtime. Thank you to all staff and students who came out to play and congratulations to
the following team members of Forman’s Fermions, Cobra Cup Champions 2011. Mr. Forman, Mr. Hardie, Brandon Giacchetta, Dylan Morrow, Sam Stewart, Owen Vouri, Connor Wassmuth, Carter Forman, Josh Lewington, Medardo Villatoro-Perez, Abhi Toor, Mitchell Bashnick.
In October, the football team played in its first ever Big Rock Football Conference playoff game. The Cobras played a very good Foothills Falcons team from Okotoks. We played them very tough and the game was 12-10 at half. Strong play from our grade 12 leaders in the 2nd half allowed us to keep pace, but we eventually fell short and our bid for a league championship ended with that game. Rundle football was not over as we were still able to play Olds for a chance to go to the Provincial tournament. Our game against Olds saw us jump out to an early lead and with outstanding play from Josh Muruve, Aaron Gruending and Giancarlo Spoletini. Rundle fell behind 1514 with under two minutes to play, but the offense responded with a good drive and a great third down play to Evan Beck who scored the game winning touchdown. The Cobras now travel to Medicine Hat to take on the Crescent Heights Vikings in tier 3 Provincial quarterfinal.” Cross Country The team had an excellent season, with many top ten finishes in the mandatory three races . Two runners , Jenna Westaway and Thomas Kellner, qualified for provincials after a gruelling race at Canada Olympic Park. Jenna and Thomas both represented Rundle College in Elkwater, Alberta, with a lot of class, and determination, Thomas placed a respectable 31st, and Jenna placed 4th. Congratulations to all runners, and thanks for an excellent season. Devante Chandron is a wonderful addition to our Rundle College community. One might consider him a ‘silent leader,’ often taking charge behind the scenes to make our school better and better. Devante lives with integrity, often choosing to “walk the talk” while going out of his way to support his peers and teachers, asking for nothing in return. He is an active member on the Public Relations Committee of this year’s drama production .

Last month, 84 grade 8 students and 5 teachers took part in an off-Campus Fine Arts Day. The Epcor Centre was host to half of the children where they created wire sculptural art using coat hangers, wood and nylons. The rest of the day was Music Stomp Style where they used their hands, feet and the floor to create music with a strong rhythm. The rest of the students went to the City of Calgary’s North Mount Pleasant Art Centre where they made clay Peruvian animal pots, followed by a watercolour workshop featuring autumn leaves. The professional artists who led the workshops were excellent and it was an educational and fun day.

Discovery Days In Health Science Field Trip No matter where your interests lay in the field of Biology, there was sure to be something to peek your interest at the Discovery Days in Health Science, offered by The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. On Friday, October 14th, the biology honours students had the chance to explore various aspects of education and careers in the health sciences. The day started with us taking our seats in a smaller lecture hall to listen to Dr. Ebba Kurz who set the mood for the day. Dr. Kurz at one time worked in a lab alongside one of Rundle’s alumni, Dr.
Aaron Goodarzi. After the initial keynote address, we broke into smaller groups for hands-on workshops. Some of us got wrapped up in cast making, learning how to set one, and perhaps more significant, how to get the cast off afterwards. Others learned about the importance of DNA and genetics, some students even getting the opportunity to use the U of C labs to replicate DNA. As the day came to a close, we found ourselves back in the lecture hall with the chance to ask some people in a variety of health-related careers about their profes-
sional journeys. This proved to provide great insight into the reality of these professions. Before we knew it the day was done, leaving us walking out with great memories, and some of us a cast to go along with it. Overall this was a great eye opening experience that we were glad to be a part of.
Junior High Student Council Hello fellow students and parents, my name is Luca Romano and I am the Student Council Press Secretary for the year. At the beginning of the month myself and the other members of Council had a wonderful experience at our conference in Hughendon. If you have absolutely no clue where that is, I will tell you it is about 5 hours northeast of Calgary. In Hughendon we listened to a number of speakers talk about leader-
ship. My favorite speaker was Mark Black he spoke about how he needed a heart and double lung transplant. Mark had a lot of great stories about his life. He told us that only 2 years after the operation he had finished a marathon. We also attended a rodeo, my favorite performance were the trick riders, they were awesome. Unfortunately we had to get back home and plan for the Halloween activity day. On October 31, 2011 we had
our activity day. We held costume contests, activities (including the ankle game, the ninja game, and played Halloween musical chairs), and a spirit award. The winners of the activities were awarded points. At the end of the day we tallied them up and classrooms 7.6, 8.6, and 9.6 are in the lead. The student council is now planning for the winter dance on November 25th. Tickets will be sold starting November 15th. We will be having
activities during the dance. One activity we have decided on is a dance off. The student council will greatly appreciate and is looking for donations for prizes to give away throughout the year. If you can donate anything, please contact Mrs. Helman via email Helman@rundle. ab.ca. Thank-you and have a wonderful November.
We Day On October 13, 2011 the grade ten and eleven Social Studies Honours classes travelled to Vancouver to participate in the We Day Event. We Day is a one-day event sponsored by Free The Children, a humanitarian organization that focuses on eliminating child exploitation around the world. Through a network of children helping children, Free The Children has been able to provide education, clean water, health care and sustainable income to thousands of families around the world. We Day is an event that celebrates and inspires youth to lead local and global change. Students listened to numerous speeches on change including Mikhail Gobachev, Michel Chikwanine, Mia Farrow and Spencer West. Kieran Dicke, Grade 10 “We Day was by far one of the most exciting and inspirational trips I have ever participated in as a student. It allowed us as a class to be enlightened on many global issues, and the projects that Free The Children is doing to address these issues. It allowed us to see that, although we are just one student, when many of us get together it creates a giant wave that can impact the world. We learned that we are not lifting people from poverty; we are helping them to lift themselves from poverty.” Alex Spurgeon, Grade 10 “Looking back on We Day, I am almost certain that I will never experience an event like this again. We had a vague idea of what would happen: there would be speakers, bands playing music, and lots of people. Our original idea of We Day was only a small part of what the day would actually be. When we stepped into Rogers Arena and saw the entire stadium filled with people just like us we, were blown away. When speakers came up and told us of their own experiences of making changes in the world, and told us that we could do similar things, we believed them.”
Canadian Exchange Saying goodbye was extremely hard for both of us. Coming home was like leaving home. Our host families greeted us with open hearts and introduced us to Canada as a part of their family and showed us such an amazing experience. Attending Rundle College was an entirely different experience, it was interesting to see how people half way around the world go about life. The Activities Day that the school hosted was a great
way for us to be introduced to the Year 11 students of Rundle College. Of course our team, the Australian team, won! The grand opening of the field was a spectacular event, full of excitement and joy. Both of us visited a myriad of places such as Banff, Kelowna, Drumheller, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Heritage Park and various other attractions. As we compare photographs now, we wish we could experience this all over again. The ice-hockey
games were a highlight of our stay and the Calgary Flames jerseys that Rundle College gave to us added to the spirit and excitement of the game. We are extremely grateful to our hosts, Rundle College, Ms. Baird, and everyone at the school for making this exchange an experience that we will never forget. We both miss our new friends and family whom we met there and are planning our next stay this very moment as we finish
our mediocre Australian bagels, with vegemite and we can’t wait until our hosts, Emily Buchanan and Tyler Bugeaud, visit us in Australia early next year. By Courtney Marley Drabble and Woody Hill
