Learner Guide


About SNC Training South Nottingham College, following the merge with Castle College on 1st July 2011, is now the biggest education and training provider in Nottinghamshire with funding for academic year 2011/12 of £40 million. The Group is split into three Operating Divisions, SNCFurther, SNCEducation and SNCTraining. SNCFurther provides further education programmes to 16-19 year olds & 19+ adult education classes. SNCEducation is focused around 14-16 programmes delivered in partnership with secondary schools, as well as Post-16 collaborative delivery. SNC Training is dedicated to providing employer responsive learning. South Nottingham College’s Mission Statement is

The strategic drivers for SNCTraining are: • To provide appropriate, demand led training programmes for local and regional employers. • To ensure high levels of quality within the training programmes that we deliver to employers. • To ensure that training is delivered profitably to employer, employee and the College. • To develop excellence in what we do ensuring high levels of satisfaction and repeat business.


Introduction The College believes that all learners are equally valuable. It acknowledges differences and supports learners developing in their own time and own way. The College tries to match its provision with the individual needs of learners. We have a comprehensive range of services providing support for learners at all sites. The College is responsible for ensuring that all learners have access to learner support at all stages of their contact with College. This includes access to Guidance/Advice and Careers, Counselling, Learner Finance advice, Additional Learning Support and Childcare. • The information provided to learners will be in a form, which is clear to the learner, i.e. at an appropriate level and in an accessible language. • Learners’ individual goals and additional support necessary to achieve them will be clearly identified, regularly assessed, recorded and reviewed. • Learners will be included in initial assessment and the development of any support plans. • Support for learners will have clear systems for referral and tracking and will be monitored to ensure quality. • The trainer (s), with input from the Learner Support team, has responsibility for ensuring that the learner’s needs are appropriately met. Ultimately this is the responsibility of the Programme Area. • The support provided will be appropriate to the environment in which the learning takes place and should enable trainers to match individual learning styles by using a variety of teaching strategies, materials, aids and groupings. • The College will ensure that the environment is accessible to all learners

Expectations As a Learner, you are expected to be committed to achieving your goals, aspirations and potential through: • Treating all fellow learners and staff with respect, dignity and equity. • Making learning successful by behaving in a way that ensures everybody learns productively and by working co-operatively with others and conducting yourself in a professional and courteous manner. • Seeking help when you need it and taking advantage of the support offered. • Taking ownership over your learning and engaging in your programme as agreed with your trainer. • Contributing positively to learning activities. • Communicating effectively with your mentor and trainer of changes to your circumstances which may impact on your programme. • Adhering to SNC Training policies in relation to Health and Safety, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

From SNC Training • You will be treated as an individual, with an individual learning plan. • You will be treated with respect, dignity, and equity by staff and fellow learners. • You will be provided with high quality training delivered by suitably qualified and experienced staff and your programme will consist of high quality materials. • We will undertake a Health and Safety assessment to ensure your learning environment is safe, accessible and conducive to learning. • We will provide you with the tools to inform us of any issues, complaints or appeals, and also to contribute to positive case studies, commendations and learning awards. • You will receive impartial information and advice about other learning and training opportunities you may wish to progress onto. • We will provide you with the support, training or sign-post you for additional learning support and or additional social needs. • You will be provided with the support you need to


succeed. • We will provide you with targets that are challenging but achievable. • We will provide regular feedback on their progress with advice on how to improve • We will review your personal action plans to achieve your potential as a learner. • We will provide you with access to specialist learning support, careers advice and guidance. • We will provide access to confidential financial advice and counselling services. • We will support for your progress through liaison with your employer and outside bodies where appropriate.

and an acceptance of individual responsibility. • Providing you with information and training to work safely. • Ensuring that young workers are protected by taking into account their inexperience and immaturity when identifying risk areas and providing appropriate controls (including proper supervision by a competent person) and information, instruction and training.

Learner Malpractice The College is committed to zero tolerance of learner malpractice, including: • Plagiarism by copying and passing off work carried out by another. • Collusion by working collaboratively to produce work that is submitted as individual learner work. • Impersonation by pretending to be someone else in order to produce the work for another or taking ones place in an assessment, examination or test • Fabrication of results and or evidence. • Failing to abide by the instructions or advice of a tutor, supervisor, or invigilator. • Misuse of assessment or examination material. • Introduction and, or use of unauthorised material for supervised assessment, examination or test. • Obtaining, receiving, exchanging or passing on information which could be assessment, examination or test related. • Behaving in such a way as to undermine the integrity of the assessment, examination or test. • The alteration of any results documentation including certificates. • Cheating to gain an unfair advantage.

Health and Safety The College is committed to ensuring the protection of its learners and promoting their health, safety and wellbeing. We are committed to: • Establishing and maintaining a safe learning environment, so far as is reasonably practicable, to comply fully with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, all other statutory provision and approved codes of practice. • Developing your awareness of health and safety


Appeals Procedure All learners have the right to appeal for reasons of discrimination, assessment decisions or programme quality. During the induction to your programme of learning the Appeals / Complaint Procedure will be discussed with you in full and is summarised below.

Stage 1 Speak to your Vocational Tutor

Stage 2 Put your appeal in writing to the Sector Lead for the Programme

Stage 3 Put your appeal in writing to the Operations Manager for the programme

Stage 4 Put your appeal in writing to the Head of SNC Training
