MEATGRINDER 25TH MARCH 2016
THE WAR OF ATTRITION
MUSTERING YOUR FORCES
Welcome to Meatgrinder, an event where you bravely march your forces across the blasted wastes of the 41st Millennium to do cataclysmic battle with like-minded opponents, over a day of fun, social gaming. This event is all about throwing your troops into the horror that is a war of attrition in the 41st Millennium. The history of the Galaxy is littered with examples of merciless commanders who were willing to throw away the lives of their troops to achieve their aim; the total destruction of the enemy. Astra Militarum Generals and Ork Warbosses are famous for the casual disregard with which they send waves of troops against enemy positions, while the Hive Mind sees drowning planets in the writhing bodies of Tyranid organisms as a legitimate tactic. But all forces in the Galaxy must be prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve victory, lest they be destroyed and forgotten by history... Can you bring the fight to the enemy and survive the Meatgrinder?
To play in this event, you’ll need to bring with you an army of miniatures. You may select a force worth up to 1000 points, chosen using Choosing Your Army section of Warhammer 40,000: The Rules (page 116). You may choose to use a Battle Forged force or an Unbound army if you so choose.
WHAT IS MEATGRINDER? This event is about enjoying great games in the presence of other enthusiastic players and their fully painted armies. THE IRON CAGE
In the early 31st Millennium, the Imperial Fists assaulted the Iron Warriors-held planet of Sebastus IV. Rogol Dorn vowed to “Dig Perturabo out of his hole and bring him back to Terra in an Iron Cage”. Assaulting the Iron Warrior’s mighty bastion, nicknamed “The Eternal Fortress”, the Imperial Fists suffered heinous casualties in their effort to drive the Traitors from the planet, having to resort to hand to hand fighting in trenches once their ammunition had run dry.
All of the miniatures you bring must have been produced by Games Workshop and are fully assembled, painted and based. For the sake of clarity for your opponents, and to avoid mid-game confusion, we also require that each model represents exactly what it is on your army list (including all weapons and equipment). Make sure you have an army list written and ready to show your opponents before each game.
GAMES At the heart of the Meatgrinder experience are the 3 games of Warhammer 40,000 you will play over the course of the day. Each game lasts up to an hour and a half and will be against a randomly determined opponent; the Events Team will arrange your opponent and send you to a specific table for each game. We will also roll a mission from those in use (for this event, it’s the Maelstrom of War missions from Warhammer 40,000: The Rules); once the mission has been played, we will cross it off our list, so no mission will be played more than once.
RULES OF ATTRITION This weekend, your Commanders have been told their aim is to kill as many of the enemy as possible, no matter the cost in lives. As such, for this event only we will use the following special rule: All units of non-unique Infantry (including Jump Infantry and Jet Pack Infantry) have the Sustained Assault Special Rule (see right). Note: only Infantry have this Special Rule: their Dedicated Transports do not have it. • Any unit with Sustained Assault and Deep Strike may arrive using the Deep Strike rules if they so wish. • Units returning via Sustained Assault are no longer part of any Formation or Detachment they might have been originally part of. • Units entering play via Sustained Assault count as a brand new unit in all respects eg – any “one use only” weapons are replenished. • If a unit contains a mixture of Infantry and non-Infantry, eg a Hive Tyrant and Tyrant Guard, then the unit does not gain the Sustained Assault rule.
SUSTAINED ASSAULT In the bloodiest battles of the 41st Millennium, commanders must be prepared to sacrifice thousands of lives to achieve their aims... When a unit with Sustained Assault is completely destroyed or has fled the table, place the whole unit in reserve, ready to be deployed again in your next turn, using the Ongoing Reserves rules from page 136 of Warhammer 40,000: The Rules. This unit gains the Outflank special rule when placed into Ongoing Reserves.

THE SIEGE OF KOTRAX
When the dour Commander Kubrik Chenkov took command of the Valhallan forces after a year-long siege of the heavily defended citadel on Kotrax, it would be the making of his reputation. He brought about a swift, yet bloody end to the war when he ordered his regiments to storm the fortress without any armoured support or dedicated siege weapons. While the assault was eventually successful, earning Chenkov the High Merit from the High Lords of Terra, the attack cost ten million Guardsmen their lives.
ATTRITION POINTS At this event, while your commanders are trying to achieve their Primary and Secondary Objectives as normal, they are well aware that their superiors have a far greater objective of seeing the enemy destroyed or totally broken. As such, during your games, keep a track of the enemy units you destroy on special record slips handed to you before the game begins. • At the end of the game, you receive 1 Attrition Point for each enemy unit that has been completely destroyed. • Units that are Falling Back at the end of the game, and units that are not on the board at the end of the game, count as destroyed for these purposes. • Remember, Independent Characters and Dedicated Transports are individual units and award Attrition Points if destroyed. • Any unit that has been placed into Ongoing Reserve as a result of the Sustained Assault rules does not count as destroyed for these purposes. • Record the final number of Attrition Points scored in the game on your record slip. At the end of the event, there will be prizes available for both those who have scored the most Attrition Points, and those who threw away the most troops and had the most Attrition Points scored against them, so go for it!

THE THIRD WAR FOR ARMAGEDDON Just 57 years after the defeat of Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka at the hands of multiple Space Marine Chapters and millions of Astra Militarum Guardsmen, the Warlord returned to claim Armageddon for his own. He brought with him an Ork WAAAGH! of such immense proportions that the greatest Imperial army that have ever been assembled was mustered. Space Marine and Astra Militarum commanders had to sacrifice billons of warriors to hold back the green tide but they eventually succeeded. Ghazghkull Thraka fled the planet, and Imperial forces claimed victory, though be it a very costly one...

You can vote for whatever reason you like; perhaps the opponent was particularly sporting, or their army was beautifully painted. Maybe they taught you a new tactic you’d never seen or it was a very close, cinematic game. Whatever the reason, please recognise your fellow players who have made the effort to provide a great experience and cast your vote on the special results slips provided.
WINNING THE EVENT At the end of the event, the player who has earned the most Favourite Game votes from their opponents will be declared the winner of the event and crowned The Master of the Meatgrinder. If there are multiple players with the same number of votes received, we will use the number of Attrition Points you earned during your games as a tie-breaker.
THE BEST ARMY COMPETITION In order to acknowledge the outstanding efforts that some players go to in order to produce stunning armies, we have the Best Army competition. The Events team will nominate armies for everyone to vote on during lunch time. The player who receives the most number of votes will win the Best Army award.Awards available • Best Army Award for the player who earns the most votes for Best Army. • Commander Chenkov’s High Merit for the player/players who has the most Attrition Points scored against them. • The Chosen of Khorne To the player/players who scored the most Attrition Points. • The Master of the Meatgrinder to the player who earns the most Favourite Game votes from their opponents.
