Preface

This portfolio marks a fresh beginning for me. It encompasses two of my student design works and three architectural design projects that have either been realized or are on the brink of realization. Over the past three years, due to depression, I haven’t produced many works. However, my energy has recovered significantly. I hope to hit the road again and embark on a new journey.

Fluid Branching

Studio Design | 2023

Site: Financial District, NYC

Instructor: Hina Jamelle

The programmed adaptive reuse strategy creates house units interlocked and positioned in response to a fluid branching facade. Regarding the facade strategy, the elevation keeps parts of the original window frames and bricks from the old Corbin Building. New building parts slightly protrude and climb to the roof like branches of plants. The protruding parts serve as balconies that connect with the house units. Therefore, house unit distribution follows the logic of facade, staggering together layer by layer. Moreover, The old brick material contacts the modern internal space language to give a sense of comparison and dialog.

The Corbin Building has a massive daily flow in the New York Financial District. Next to it is the Fulton Center, which is a big shopping mall and transportation hub. The building has four entrances: the connection passage to Fulton Center, two long elevation facade entrances, and short facade entrances. The project’s public common space is the gallery, located separately on the ground floor and upper floors, behind the big window frame. A gallery can create multiple experiences when connecting two buildings. It illuminates residents and attracts customers to explore the area’s cultural atmosphere simultaneously. Consequently, people here could have a fluid culture and commercial experience with limited space.

Site: Plain Area all over the world

With the COVID-19 sweeping the globe today, people should deeply reflect on the limitations and deficiencies of the existing medical system. Limited medical resources and uneven distributions lead to delayed treatment of patients, improper hospital flow leads to infection of staff…Tragedies are constantly happening. Furthermore, social and economic stability is also under great pressure.Based on the reflection and thinking of the current situation, this program envisages the future institution for medical infectious disease prevention. These constructions will be scattered in plains all over the world. At ordinary times, they operate as research centres of medical technology. When large-scale infectious diseases spread, constructions will play a positive role in treating patients and developing vaccines. To scatter like stars in the sky, I hope those organs can become global health wardens, which lead to the continuous development and progress of medicine and infectious diseases treatment and guide human beings to move forward.

Volume and Function

The change in building volume is consistent with the function. Firstly, the top narrow layer is used to receive solar energy. Then, the large volume part in the middle is used to receive patients. Patients will be treated and live here to construct a temporary social order. Offices for doctors are set up in the middle of the patient's living area for efficient interaction. The lower layer began to contract for the storage of medicine and equipment.

Strategy

Enclosed Management

The construction was far away from the city area with enclosed management. Patients and viruses would be converged together into this building. Therefore it can prevent the virus from further spreading.

Distribution of Source

The construction will be built with farmland, which can provide food and herbal medicine. It will also have facilities for storing and transform energy. Thus, this tower will form a self-sufficient system, and construct a provisional community for people to communicate, activate, and live.

Location

Self-sufficient System

With many similar constructions near the city, the press of food, medicine, and other sources will be reduced to some extent. Different points will contact and have a counterbalance. The collapse of the health system due to the unbalanced distribution of sources will not happen.

The Institute centres are located in plain areas all over the world, which are far away from cities. On the hand, these research points also have contact with each other, medical resources can be transmitted between cover the world like a network, which prevents people from epidemic effectively.

Design process

The architectural volume is constituted by three rotated curves. It shrinks at its end parts, while expands at three curves is modularized to provide abundant units for patients.

The Ring

Normally, the ring lands on the ground and it is idle. In the case of an outbreak, the circle rises slowly and undertakes the work of reception and treatment of critically ill patients. It is suspended in the air with anti-gravity equipment and interacted with different regions from skyscrapers. Based on advanced technology and equipment, critically ill patients will be closely monitored and treated. Patients with severe to a mild situation will be transported by aircraft to the residential area in the skyscraper. In addition to this function, the ring is also equipped with the virus vaccine Institute and the restroom of medical staff.

The unit attached to the surface of the building is not only a facade skin, but also the wards of the light disease infected people. The system is divided into two layers, one is living space, and the other is activity space. Patients can be quarantined, medicated and housed for a long time here. At the same time, they can also have some social interaction with other mild patients.

These units are attached to the outermost layer of the building to receive maximum sunlight. At the same time, it can interact closely and directly with the small rocket on the floating ring. Severe to mild patients can transfer their living place by this means of transportation. At the same time, doctors can also quickly arrive at different wards to interact with patients and pay close attention to their physical condition.

Lots of units are combined to form a complete skin system, while a temporary society in the spiritual sense. Mild patients do not need intensely care and company as severe patients. They can carry out self-isolation and drug treatment in the unit. Meanwhile, they can also socialize and work. Such a system can maintain social stability to a certain extent, and make the society carry out the anti-epidemic work and economic development in an orderly way.

21

Future Prospect

When the vaccine is successfully developed, the disease disappeared finally. People living in it begin to return to their original society soon. The huge floating ring slowly descends, indicating the end of a crisis. Hospitals and research institutes will be kept here in case of the next attack of infectious diseases. All that remained was the skyscraper standing like a monument. Standing on the ground like a warden, it symbolizes hope and protects human health and social civilization.

Gatehouse

Architecture Design

Group Work

Professional Practice | 2024

Site: Sandy Hook, New Jersy

As a way of fostering a higher level of collaboration both between student teams and the industry partner, students will coordinate efforts in the design and production of a common project component: a gatehouse which will exist as a discreet space and provide human access to the research facility. Shared functions of the gatehouse will be “transition” and “enclosure”, signaling entry into this hybrid environment. Following the design of the gatehouse, each student team will utilize the assemblage as a component within their project, establishing some commonality while allowing teams to explore overall design solutions on their own terms. This collaborative design goal of the studio will be explored at full scale.

The gatehouse will be sited along an access driveway at the point of entry to Northeast Precast’s new state-of-the-art plant located in Vineland, New Jersey. The studio will make several visits to the site to understand the context, as well as the material’s use, and manufacturing process. Concrete is an historic material, used traditionally and mixed as a simple concoction of sand, aggregate, water, and a binding agent – generally cement. At the same time is a plastic material that is coming into new contemporary uses, given advanced fabrication concepts and techniques for form work.

SCOOOPE

Exhibitiion Design

Professional Practice | 2021

Site: Chengdu

In April 2021, Southwest Independent Architects Group Exhibition was held officially in Luxelakes, Chengdu by A8 Design Center. 31 independent architects set up individual experimental art installations around the lake. With unique perspectives and novel design concepts, they bring a fresh and diverse lakeside experience to the public. Participating in this exhibition, MUDA-Architects uses a concise yet unique form to present an immersive and interactive experience. The installation expands people’s thinking on design, nature, and life.

Construction Details

The installation is built upon a wooden structure platform, which is filled with sand and gravel to keep it stable without damaging the original site. Then, the main structure is constructed with a light steel frame and covered with wooden plates. Two mirrors are installed in the end to form the basic geometry shape and neat character of the interface.

Tutor : Zuloark

Site: XJTLU Design Building, Suzhou

In the workshop we are divided into groups and manage build a pavilion through various recycled materials such as bricks, steels, bamboo battens and wood. Steels and Wood are built as loading structure, while a shelter is made by weaving bamboo battens. The building was on the roof plantform of school, which aims to provide student a space to rest and take foods.
