PORTFOLIO Selected Works 2016-2020 Cheng Runhao

Statement Topics I have pondered focus on the most common things in life: aging, illness, death and birth. I think about these problems in my works: How to face the traces of time calmly with aging people as well as aging buildings? How to effectively deal with and solve illness as unexpected bumps? How can we live to confront death when we are walking to the dead end? And when people sublimate from the shadow of aging, disease and death, does it mean a new beginning ,a new regeneration or reincarnation? People tend to face them with negative attitudes. However, they are essential parts of life. As Wang Yangming said, Knowledge and action should go hand in hand. Since the core of architecture is human beings, everything observing this discipline constitutes parts of life. I wish I could be a poetic problem solver. On the one hand, I realize that architects possess limited power due to their role in the late phase of urban construction, and are subjected to many external factors; on the other hand, I still hope that through the efforts and research by architects, it is most likely and effectively to improve the living environment and create the most suitable space for users in a wider range.

The Warden

Skyscraper Design Group Work Disign Studio | 2020 Tutor : Hana Guo Site: Plain Area all over the world With the COVID-19 sweeping the globe today, people should deeply reflect on the limitations and deficiencies of the existing medical system. Limited medical resources and uneven distributions lead to delayed treatment of patients, improper hospital flow leads to infection of staff‌Tragedies are constantly happening. Furthermore, social and economic stability is also under great pressure.Based on the reflection and thinking of the current situation, this program envisages the future institution for medical infectious disease prevention. These constructions will be scattered in plains all over the world. At ordinary times, they operate as research centres of medical technology. When largescale infectious diseases spread, constructions will play a positive role in treating patients and developing vaccines. To scatter like stars in the sky, I hope those organs can become global health wardens, which lead to the continuous development and progress of medicine and infectious diseases treatment and guide human beings to move forward.

Background Looking at various outbreaks throughout history, we can see that human beings have paid a heavy price to struggle for survival almost every period. With the development of society as well as the progress of medical science, this threat has not gone away from us. Every few decades, there would be a new epidemic. Epidemic diseases that erupted worldwide in recent years, such as Covid-19 have significantly impacted us personally and socially. Regarding personality, In addition to the threat of illness to physical health, long-term home and death anxiety, make mental health also considerable risk. Moreover, in terms of social perspective, the increasing number of infections has put enormous pressure on the global health system. Which may lead to economic downturns, exacerbated social instability, protests and riots. In summary, our design tries to respond to such unpredictable outbreak‘s impact on threat, hoping that it will enable the government to better deal with emergencies, enhance social stability and help anyone in need

Strategy

Enclosed Management The construction was far away from the city area with enclosed management. Patients and viruses would be converged together into this building. Therefore it can prevent the virus from further spreading.

Distribution of Source The construction will be built with farmland, which can provide food and herbal medicine. It will also have facilities for storing and transform energy. Thus, this tower will form a self-sufficient system, and construct a provisional community for people to communicate, activate, and live.

Location The Institute centres are located in plain areas all over the world, which are far away from cities. On the one hand, sufficient land supplemented by high-efficiency automatic irrigation technology provides large-scale production of grain and herbal medicine in case of emergency. On the other hand, these research points also have contact with each other, medical resources can be transmitted between them, and experts can also have rapid communication and interaction. Consequently, the uneven distribution of medical food resources can be prevented. Densely distributed buildings cover the world like a network, which prevents people from epidemic effectively.

Self-sufficient System With many similar constructions near the city, the press of food, medicine, and other sources will be reduced to some extent. Different points will contact and have a counterbalance. The collapse of the health system due to the unbalanced distribution of sources will not happen.

Modularizatioin

Design process The architectural volume is constituted by three rotated curves. It shrinks at its end parts, while expands at the middle to match functions accordingly. The basement is expanded with corresponding to mechanical requirements. Moreover, it forms a soft transition with the ground. Space between three curves is modularized to provide abundant units for patients.

Volume and Function The change in building volume is consistent with the function. Firstly, the top narrow layer is used to receive solar energy. Then, the large volume part in the middle is used to receive patients. Patients will be treated and live here to construct a temporary social order. Offices for doctors are set up in the middle of the patient's living area for efficient interaction. The lower layer began to contract for the storage of medicine and equipment.

ICU Medical staff can enter ICU through disinfection room. It has the most advanced treatment and 24-hour care facilities. They will save patients' lives at all costs. Besides, critically ill patients will be transported by small skycrafts as ambulances. They perform important functions and reduce the risk of infection.

The Unit

Medical Storage All kinds of rescue equipment such as ventilator, electrocardiograph are placed in the warehouse. At the same time, it also stores various sample data to support vaccine and virus research. At the end of their work , researchers would be disinfected in a sterilization unit (column) before moving on to other sites.

Indoor ventilation Contro Panel

Water&Electricity Carrier The unit attached to the surface of the building is not only a faรงade skin, but also the wards of the light disease infected people. The system is divided into two layers, one is living space, and the other is activity space. Patients can be quarantined, medicated and housed for a long time here. At the same time, they can also have some social interaction with other mild patients. These units are attached to the outermost layer of the building to receive maximum sunlight. At the same time, it can interact closely and directly with the small rocket on the floating ring. Severe to mild patients can transfer their living place by this means of transportation. At the same time, doctors can also quickly arrive at different wards to interact with patients and pay close attention to their physical condition.

The Ring Normally, the ring lands on the ground and it is idle. In the case of an outbreak, the circle rises slowly and undertakes the work of reception and treatment of critically ill patients. It is suspended in the air with antigravity equipment and interacted with different regions from skyscrapers. Based on advanced technology and equipment, critically ill patients will be closely monitored and treated. Patients with severe to a mild situation will be transported by aircraft to the residential area in the skyscraper. In addition to this function, the ring is also equipped with the virus vaccine Institute and the restroom of medical staff.

Anti-gravity Equipment The ring is suspended in the air by anti-gravity devices. It floats up and down at different times. For example, during working hours, it stops at the patient's living floor to facilitate timely interaction between medical staff and patients. In this way it also reduces the risk of infection.

Lots of units are combined to form a complete skin system, while a temporary society in the spiritual sense. Mild patients do not need intensely care and company as severe patients. They can carry out self-isolation and drug treatment in the unit. Meanwhile, they can also socialize and work. Such a system can maintain social stability to a certain extent, and make the society carry out the anti-epidemic work and economic development in an orderly way.

Future Prospect When the vaccine is successfully developed, the disease disappeared finally. People living in it begin to return to their original society soon. The huge floating ring slowly descends, indicating the end of a crisis. Hospitals and research institutes will be kept here in case of the next attack of infectious diseases. All that remained was the skyscraper standing like a monument. Standing on the ground like a warden, it symbolizes hope and protects human health and social civilization.

The Journey of Loss

Final Year Project Studio Work Competition | 2020 Tutor : David Vardy Site: The bottom of mountain, Wenzhou, Zhejiang The project can be seen as a mountain road itself, winding up the slope to form a journey and funerary narrative, via an articulation of space, light, courtyard with the use of recycled material. Occupiers, will not only as traverse mourners but also as tourists, embarking on the journey of pursuing the lost life through architecture. In the process, there are exploration, recollection, enjoyment, and sorrow. The whole building is divided into three parts, the underground space, the tower, and the roof. The underground part is a ritual process. When people begin the journey from the entrance, they will experience a long and dark tunnel to recollect memories. The tower is a vertical structure connecting the upper and lower parts, sublimating from death to life. The upper part is the landscape with the roof. Someone sleeps here. Finally, the travellers will return to the original starting point and complete an implied life cycle through the intricate mountain road. And designers believe that after the circulation, what has gone around will be going around without halt.

Across the oceans, across the seas. Over forests of blackened trees. Valleys so still we dare not breathe. To be by your side. Over the shifting desert plains. Across mountains all in flames. Howling winds and driving rains. To be by your side. Into the night as the stars collide. Across the border that divide. Forest of stone standing petrified. To be by your side.

Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get. You may get happiness, you may get sadness. And Finally you are going to get your destination.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glint on snow I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep When you awaken in the morning hush I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight I am the soft starlight at night Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep

Death is not a such sad or painful experience. With the belif that is a kind of transformation from human-beings to natural and the world, it finally becomes peaceful and healed.

Concept Life can be seen as a one-way journey, but also as a natural reincarnation. People can see different aspects of life in various directions. The concept model demonstrates my comprehension of life. In a colourful background (world), white lines represent the reflection of fractious memory. With the transformation of those fractions, various emotions such as happiness and sadness are delivered. When people come to construction, they become a prover of others ‘life. In other words, they will witness the life experience of someone else. They may resonate with them, and get something such as merit and values. Finally, they will deliver these to the next generation and finish a circulation.

Location The Site is located at the bottom of mountain. Under constructed campus as well as ancient village nearby can be see through the architecture. Therefore, the programme choose to match with the surrounding environment and nature by means of hidden. The main body of construction is buried underground, with fluctuation tile roof exposed outside.

The programme is divided into 4 blocks with various functions. Those volumes are placed along with the geography contour so that it could form a stairs with different height. Then, move those blocks to different directions to create a zigzag shape. The programme thus form a one-way experience route. Moreover, there is a long and straight volume interlaced with 4 volumes, which connects all of them. People can chose either way go uphill.

Story Line

During the whole experience of construction, visitors will go to witness different fractions of somebodies' lifetime underground. the one who has suffered pain, but comes to sublimation now. During such process, visitors will resonate with the man emotionally. He can understand his interlaced pain and happiness. When the mood reaches a climax, an explosion point, visitors can feel the value of life. Finally, everything goes into peace. The memorial site will be set on the ground with roof. After people go after the mourning space (the black tower which extended from underground to upfloor), the atmospere above ground will contribute a contrast with underground. The roof will lead to tortuous plantform where provide an space for circulation as well as meditation. The rest part will be leave for green space, where ashes of the dead will be buried here. relations and friends can stay on the platform and memory the dead. If they want, they can also bring a piece of leaf as collection when they go back to their home. In other words, the space above the building can be retained as a natural and ecological landscape as well as memorial site. It can create multiple atmosphere and experience for people go through it. After go through the underground part, they came back to ground. Then they can go along with the contour (a tortuous path) and feel the meaning of life

Experience In the underground part, Lighting strategies combined with space and texture try to uncover the unconscious of fear. For example, there is a central corridor intersected with different parts of the program. It is not the main route for walking but serves to space for ceasing and rest. During the process of going through the project, people will return to this area several times. The roof with pale light, rough walls, and the hollow floors, which allows the flow of groundwater, constitute the space. Direct lighting will be prevented and dispersed on the façade of lamellae, which demonstrate a pale white glow for illumination。 The boundary between dark and light is indistinguishable, which may create a dreamlike atmosphere full of confusion. Meanwhile, such pale and monotonous light may lead to a sense of lifelessness as drained of the complexion of life and evoke instinct depression and fear of mourners. The rough walls with textures give depth to the shadow. The hollow floors will create echoes as people walking through it. Consequently, the interior space creates a repetition in dream conditions, which would lead to helplessness feeling people experience in certain dream-states. Such experience can be connected with the ancient time when people go through a road in a cave with undiscovered dangers. Emotional impulsive was impressed and inherited today. It is in the psyche unconsciously and will be evoked by the space.

Routes for mourners and staff are totally separate, thus people can have a continuous experiences of construction. They can go underground at the entrance and walk slowly uphill along the geographical contours. Then they will visit reception area, exhibition area and mourner rooms in an order. When they go out of the building, landscape route are free to explore and contemplate. Finally they will go to the beginning point as their end of experience.

About Fear The topic of the writer’s final year project is concerning death. For one thing, death is related to a sense of depression and helplessness. Freud pointed potent thinking and feeling to relate to death has changed little since primitive times, and one of the reasons is the strength of initial emotional reactions. It seems that it is an unavoidable process, since a long time ago. Millions of repetition of such experience lead to precipitation of depression and helplessness, which is inherited in Collective Unconscious. For the other, Chinese local culture and religion may cause a different influence. In China, the concept of death is various to that in the Western world, with morbidity and gloom. According to An, Taoists hold a point that death takes positive influence, for death and life are not opposite and separate. Instead, it is a transformation of two status. There is no absolute beginning, as well as the ending. Consequently, the concept of death is naturalizing and normalized. The design aimed to use various strategies to revolve and intensify these two different feelings and cultures from collective unconscious into a sense of awareness regarding landscape and lighting to build a narrative atmosphere. Located at the bottom of the mountain, the name of the project is the road of lost things. Walking on the road in various conditions can cause different experience. The concept initiates with the reflection of life. Influenced by the two mentioned above points, life can be seen as both a one-way journey as well as a circulation of life. The designer tries to unify these two points into one at one program by the sequential order of space. Therefore, in terms of atmosphere, the programs can be divided into two parts. The first part is the main body of construction, which is hidden underground, with dim light, to evoke instinctive helplessness and depression that covered up within the inner body. While the second part including roofs and landscape, which is exposed to the surface of the mountain. Surrounded by light and forest, the atmosphere of the space tends to be peaceful and natural. Between the boundaries of these two parts, a tower, as a transition station from death to life, vertically go through them. The route of the programs is setting from underground to the surface of the mountain. When people proceed through the building, instinctive fear from the collective unconscious will be evoked and intensified, while when going to the destination as well as the starting point of the road, the other sense that completion of circulation would uncover. Fear and uncanny are included within nature and faded out. Consequently, they can better comprehend death in a poetic and atheistic way.

Memory Box

Activity Center Design Group Work Competition | 2019 Tutor : Lu Yun Site: The coast of Okhotsk in Russia The story is about the circulation of a construction. Designers like to explore what a renovated architecture can be, after a regime change, or the subsequent development and decline of the countryside. Today, how can we make use of it to achieve a kind of similar but not the same state as before? The proposal could be a combination of past realities and present wishes, and a sustained circulation of the building, with the aim of exerting influence on the local atmosphere as well as the total environment.

Located on the coast of Okhotsk in Russia, the building once was a hotel, providing a rest space for fishermen as well as tourists. It was bustling with noise and excitement. During the Great Patriotic War,this area was an important harbour for both the Soviet Union and Japan, Therefore it was very prosperous and reach its peaks. However, after the war, problems such as population loss and urbanization, the area had suffered a gradual decline.Today, the population in this areais no more than 300. All that remained was only shambles.

1932 Along the coastline of Okhotsk Sea, there is nothing but spoondrift andgravel. Indigent but fulfilled , people here lived on fishing for the lifetime. Not far away from thecoast, a couple built a small hotel, and boy, their children, grew up here. Everyday there were full of Singing , whispering and laughter. Sometimes, the boy would like to play with his buddies and made little mischief, but in the most of time, he would prefer standing still by a window, observing the moving crowd, their expressionsatisfied or confident. Waves beats the coast, seabirds hovered at sky, and the Sun risesup and sets down... Everything seemed to be eternal, everything was full of hope.

1962 The boy grew up, he was taller and taller day by day. However, the whole area wasdeclined. The Great Patriotic War dealt a severe blow to the people, as well as the Dwindled of the fishing industry . More and more people decided to move out to abigger city, for another dream. Hestranded still by the door, witnessed the departure of people .Now he was also itching for a try. Neglected dissuasion of his family, he left. He thought, once he got home in the city, he can pick his family up as well. But they couldn’t wait until that time, neither did he.

1992 Once again , he set out on his way home, stumbling along the beach toward the building in his memory. But what he could see just broken walls and ruins. He was too old to walk now , so he just sat down slowly by ruins and squinted his eyes. Here he looked back his life, and happiness in the past, now he finally realized the value of this land. Light is bright in the winter, but not brought him too much feeling of warm. But he knew that spring is coming soon. New Year is coming. He came to feel the change of light and space, he came to see…

Cavity: when light come through the opening, it gives a sense of divine and make people feel shocking atmosphere.

Archway: soft but steady structure, sight line of observers would be sheltered partly, which would lead to different scene with various viewpoints.

Half-Arch: it extracted from fornix, which would lead to complex light effect by diffuse reflection. Therefore the space would be more interesting.

Half-archway: connecting the wall and the floor naturally and form a half closure shelter, lead to more eye contact between multiple floors.

Continuity: continuous arch at the same direction, the roof keeps fluctuating and makes a sense of ritual.

Permutation: multiple routes for exploring the space. Bring a sense of space-time crisscross.

Elements Extraction During his 30 years in the city, he witnessed the prosperity of the country. Buildings constructed during the Soviet Union period gave him big influence. Abstraction of these structure became new space order demonstrated in the renovation of the building. All these elements extracted from. They are manly arch structure. However, with different combination of various scale and shape, they created multiple atmosphere and experience.

Interior Space

With a conversation between past and the future, the interior experience can be fascinating and interesting. With ancient stone faรงade materials, people can walk through it and appreciate traces of time. Besides, new materials such as metal and concrete provide a sense of modernity, people can enjoy their life and play activities in this community centre. As a result, this area can gather surrounding people together, and reconstruct community culture.

The construction would have a gradual infection in the surrounding environment. First of all, according to it, local people will gather together and have a tight connection again. Then, the influence will expand to the surrounding factories and village, the area would be activated. And finally, the influence will go far away, expand to the whole island, the country and the world. Tourist may come, as well as business for the fishing industry. In the end , the whole area will be converted into a positive atmosphere with various people , activities and so on.

Utopia 1960

Design and Building Typology Individual Work Studio | 2018 Tutor : Teo Hidalgo Site: Xiyuan Temple, Suzhou, China The program is located in the old Suzhou City. Apart from a temple as a tourist attractions, the surrounding area is generally residential buildings for old people with outmoded facilities. The program aims at building a self-sufficient community under such conditions, which is in harmony with the surrounding environment as well. On the one hand, having investigated the characteristics of the surrounding environment and the daily life of residents. The programme used the local materials and restored the daily activity space, which is closely related to the life of local old people. On the other hand, with novel living mode, the project tried to attract people such as tourists and labourers. They can come to settle down, work here, and be part of the community. The old construct the structure and culture of the community, which lead to stability. While the young will bring energy and vitality to the area. With the interaction of two groups of people, the project forms Utopia at the fraction of the city in an old sense.

The project is located in the old Suzhou City, most spaces are old residential building area constructed 60 years ago. Those residential areas have pool conditions and outmoded facilities, whose occupiers are mostly old people. Usually, In some vacant spaces in the community, the elderly bring colours and creative ideas here spontaneously. Residential buildings here range from 6m to 12m. Among them, one of the highest building is the Xiyuan Temple, which is about 15 meters high.

Composition as a Whole Single unit modules are interlaced with each other to integrate as a whole. On the premise of maximum illumination, green area, and activity space, a small community that can accommodate 50 households is finally formed. In this area, the Uniqueness of typology combines different groups of people. It not only attracts young people here to settle downďźŒ but also provides a better accommodation environment and new choices for local elderly men. The former brings vitality and mobility to the community, while the latter ensures the stability of community structure and culture. Proposal 1 In the past, people bought commodities directly without knowing its background and production process. It seems like get something from a cargo machine, something behind always cannot be seen. So today, there is a proposal that people can be accessible to commodities and something more. I wish there could be an architecture, which create a conditions that people can know more about products.

Proposal 2 Also, the architecture can be a place where consumers and staff from the production company can have a better communication and interaction. The Collage shows an idea situation that people from outdoors space can have a view about producing process, while people from lab can also get feedbacks from these consumers. It can promote the development and quality of the production.

Concept model

Concept model

Concept The original concept is to create 3 different atmosphere in vertical direction. The first level is transparent with free market to explore. The second level is mysterious with dim light, and there are many interesting devices such as VR and media for consumers to interact with company of staff. The third level is a continuous roof garden where people can enjoy themselves. In concept model, 3 different atmospheres are represented by 3 kinds of materials.

Structure The structure refers to Toyo Ito’s Sendai Museum. The five light columns in concept now are transferred into 5 core columns to supporting the whole architecture. Loadings will be transmitted to surrounding area, and gathering together again in the second floor with 1200mm deep beams. It takes little space in ground floor for supporting. And consequently, the building looks like float in the ground.

Future

Origin

Deep at night, the whole building is like a mountain suspended in the air, shrouded in mist. Interior space are lighted through semi-transparent materials. Vertical structures form lighting columns, which radiate a beautiful beam of light in the night. This construction with novel structure symbolizes the emergence of new economic mode. The new mode of purchase and interaction will bring more possibilities for the city.
