FOUR STUNNING VENUES FOR AN EXPERIENCE AS UNIQUE AS YOU

ello and welcome to another exciting year with Miss Virginia Volunteer! Tonight we are here to celebrate our state, our country, and of course this extraordinary group of young women who hail from of all backgrounds, talents, experiences, and abilities!

H Welcome!

I am grateful and humbled to be the Executive Director of the Miss Virginia Volunteer program. I am so thankful for the many volunteers that have come alongside me and for all the support and encouragement we've received from the community.

I feel so blessed for the opportunity to mentor these young women — from our Princess Program all the way through to our 10 incredible Misses — and my desire is to give insight to their abilities, to showcase their unique personalities, to raise awareness of their personal platforms, to teach them the importance of volunteerism and the giving of oneself, and to show them that crowns can lead to careers!

By providing scholarships and educational opportunities, my hope is that these talented and committed young women will use their status and experience to make a difference in their communities through their social platforms, and in their own way, to change the world!

Now, all eyes are on these incredible young women as they take the stage tonight, and I am so proud of them for so beautifully representing the great Commonwealth of Virginia. As we celebrate each outstanding moment tonight, let us all continue to share in the spirit of generosity, sisterhood, and community!

ALL MY LOVE,

MISS VIRGINIA VOLUNTEER 2022 5

MISS VIRGINIA VOLUNTEER 2021

A BreanaTURNER

As women, it is never our responsibility to fit inside the limited box that society wants to define for us.

I start my next chapter confident that this year of service lived up to that personal maxim in many ways. As Miss Virginia Volunteer, I was able to fill many boxes of my own choosing, averaging multiple appearances per week and growing the title’s social media following nearly 175 percent — all while successfully maintaining a full academic course load. The opportunities to advocate for women’s health through my platform RAISE were endless, but the highlights include delivering my signature talk, “Sis, throw your cape away,” to a Fortune 500 company, speaking on podcasts, and headlining both virtual and in-person conferences. This time in my life, which I coined "The Princess and the PhD," proved that having a purpose within my own life can have a tremendous impact on others.

Being Miss Virginia Volunteer is a beautiful blessing, but also a challenge in learning to balance many things. Despite the challenges, I craved this role because I understand so deeply that representation matters. I am eternally grateful to my elementary school piano teacher for encouraging me to watch the 2010 Miss America Pageant. If I had not seen Caressa Cameron on that stage, I might not be in this position today. It was only in 2009 when Disney released "The Princess and the Frog" that I first thought a woman who looked like me could be a real queen. I am humbled to say it’s my greatest honor to serve as a Princess Tiana to so many children these past 12 months; representation will always be relevant and important.

Thank you to my village for helping me fix my crown when it felt heavy. To my family, I am so appreciative of your unwavering love and support, not only this year, but throughout my life. I am a reflection of you. To the Miss Virginia Volunteer Board and Runk & Pratt team, thank you for making this a memorable year. I am proud of the precedent we have set together! Hannah, you are a phenomenal teen, and I cannot wait to see where you go in life. Catherine, my princess, thank you for being a part of my favorite memories from nationals. Our moment together on stage will stay close to my heart forever.

To the next Miss Virginia Volunteer and all the local titleholders, work to be a woman that the crown needs and not a woman who needs the crown. I promise you are always going to be more than enough…no matter where your life may take you.

Here’s to officially signing off as the first Black state titleholder crowned within the Miss Volunteer America Organization and the very first Miss Virginia Volunteer. Making HERstory within this organization has been an amazing chapter of my life, but I know my story will continue to get better from here. Miss Virginia Volunteer 2021, out!

All my love, Breana

CULTURE & COMMUNITY A PLACE FOR

The Academy Center of the Arts is Greater Lynchburg’s go-to center for arts, culture, and entertainment. Our mission is to serve our community through year-round programming, children's camps, art classes, gallery events, pottery courses, and of course a calendar filled with exciting events at the newly renovated Academy Theatre!

To see our full calendar of events, please visit: AcademyCenter.org/Events

ABOUT THE HISTORIC ACADEMY THEATRE

The Academy Center of the Arts campus, which encompasses several venues in downtown Lynchburg, is anchored by the Historic Academy of Music Theatre. Originally built in 1905, the Academy was the focal point for entertainment in Lynchburg from the time it opened well into the 1920s. The Academy fell into disrepair and was set to be demolished in the 1960s, until the Friends of the Academy of Music intervened. In 1969, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in hopes the designation would expedite restoration efforts. Eventually, with help from generous donors and the Lynchburg community, the theatre underwent major renovations and restoration efforts from 2015 until it reopened in December 2018 — more than 60 years after it shut its doors to the public. Updates to the 835-seat theatre include state-of-the-art sound and lighting technology, projection screens, and streaming capabilities — all while preserving the 1912-aesthetic that makes this venue a local favorite for theater, music, and quality entertainment!

Hannah RHUDY

MISS VIRGINIA TEEN VOLUNTEER 2021

To me, the best part of living life is that it rarely goes as planned. Last October, I was doing homework at the kitchen table when my parents got a call from Mrs. Kyle Grinnage. Little did I know, God was handing me a life changing job. Being appointed the inaugural Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer has been a dream come true. Working alongside Breana, Keelyn, and Catherine to help grow the Volunteer organization is incredible. Although competing in Jackson, Tennessee didn’t go as planned, this has been a year of growth and joy. My favorite memories include reading stories to elementary school students, serving meals and roller skating with the Virginia Special Olympians, and raising money for the Salvation Army during the holidays. In December, I attended parades with Breana and our local titleholders and of course, the fabulous Miss Virginia Volunteer car. Preparing for nationals with Mrs. Kyle, Mrs. Linda, and my mom had great fun. I prepared to sing the Broadway hit “Live Out Loud” from the little princess and with the help of my family, I had every detail of the competition organized. As I mentioned, the best part of living life is that it rarely goes as planned. I flew with my parents to Jackson and despite being vaccinated, I tested positive for COVID the evenings before registration. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from the Miss America Teen Volunteer competition. The next six days, I watched preliminaries from the bed and spent my days coloring or talking to friends. Looking back, this was simply God’s plan.

I am eternally grateful for the Volunteer family who assured me everything was going to be okay. I feel so grateful for my health as I understand many families have lost everything in the global pandemic. Spending a week with my parents as we watched animal planet and Shrek movies will always be a cherished memory.

First, thank you to the Runk family who launched the Virginia Volunteer organization and make this experience truly glamorous. Mrs. Runk- you have a golden heart and I admire how you balance being a girlboss and mother. You are the definition of success and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be your first volunteer teen. Miss Caitlyn and Mr. Chris- you both are so talented. From big pictures to the smallest details, I appreciate your passion and heart. Mrs. Kyle and Mrs. Linda- thank you for being my mentors since I was a little girl. You both carry so much poise and grace. Our visit in the driveway in Jackson was the highlight of my journey to Tennessee and I love being your girl. Thank you to the Gudgers for providing support, resources, and mentorship. You are the kindest family and thanks to you both, I felt so confident and prepared for the interview. To Mrs. Elizabeth Ballard-you are incredible. Thank you for showering me with love and even sending cookies when I was sick in Jackson. The Princess Program is so lucky to have you. Huge thanks to Mrs. Ashlyn and Mr. Josh for being the creative masterminds behind social media and content. Your visions are remarkable and I have so much fun working with you both. Lastly, thank you to my sisters and parents for supporting me and providing me with so many opportunities. Morgan and Addison, you have been so patient and supportive, always attending my events and helping me succeed. My lovely grandparents come to every event and love the Volunteer family just as much as I do. Thank you to my parents for being my rock. This year has been an adventure and you both are incredible. Thank you to Daddy for being my buddy and helping with details like clothing, food, car rentals, and lodging. Lastly to Mommy, thank you for being my person. You provide me with everything I need to be the best wingwoman. I dream of being half the mother you are someday.

Thank you for being here to support the Volunteer family. This organization is remarkable and I am proud to take part in it. The best part of living life is that it rarely goes as planned.

I am Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer, Hannah Rhudy.

Thank you.

LDC’s mission is to unite the dance community and create a supporting and uplifting environment in and out of the studio walls. Weekly, LDC holds classes open to all in the levels of Intermediate/Advanced, Advanced, and Professional levels while giving upcoming choreographers, videographers, and other creatives an opportunity to work their craft. Annually, LDC hosts a showcase at the Academy Center of the Arts that include dance studios, crews, teams, and companies throughout the community. This is an evening to celebrate what each group represents under a given theme while giving out Senior Scholarships and studio scholarships. LDC strives to be inclusive to all while spreading love and unity within the dance community and beyond! We believe there is room for ALL in the dance industry and that we are better together.

SAVANNAH LANE

From a very young age, Savannah Lane found a passion for advocacy and service and got her start in international advocacy as Virginia’s inaugural delegate for the Vital Voices organization (a program launched by Secretary Madeleine Albright) for her service to her community of Richmond. Savannah discovered the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization and went on to place as first runner-up twice to Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen. Savannah’s discovery of the transformative power of development and service organizations led her to continue to compete in the Miss Virginia Organization where she was named Quality of Life runner-up in 2014, winner of the Quality of Life Award in 2015, preliminary talent winner in 2014 and 2015, and ultimately was crowned Miss Virginia 2015. Savannah competed at Miss America in 2015 where she placed in the top 15. Savannah went on to finish her degree at the University of Virginia debt-free from her MAO scholarship awards studying Foreign Affairs with a concentration in Middle Eastern Affairs while continuing her advocacy for the American Heart Association, autism communities in Virginia, serving as a Resident Advisor, and performing as a lead in UVA’s musical theater production of AIDA. Savannah moved to Washington, D.C., after she was one of eight women selected from across the country to serve as a Star Fellow for Running Start in a U.S. congressional office, where she served in the U.S. House of Representatives, trained young women to run for political office, and advocated for women in traditionally underrepresented fields. Savannah then served as director and managed portfolios surrounding the U.S.-Turkey bilateral relationship and developments in Syria and the Middle East. Savannah now serves as the Executive Director for NATO 2030 Global Fellowship Program, an international program sponsored by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division. Savannah has published work and advocated for women in international spaces as a Salaam Fellow in Morocco, Syrian Refugees in Turkey, for economic gender inclusivity throughout NATO as an Aspen fellow, and was selected as one of ten young professionals in foreign policy to complete a diplomacy exchange with the United Arab Emirates Embassy to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. When not working, Savannah enjoys spending time with her boisterous family as one of two sets of twin girls with a decade younger brother, and serving as an international media commentator and keynote speaker for women’s advocacy organizations. Savannah has just completed her Master’s Degree in Global Affairs and International Security and enjoys sharing a behind the scenes look as a foreign policy content creator on social media in efforts to diversify diplomacy and create more transparent pipelines to policy.
