After the uncertainty that Covid-19 brought in 2020, decimating our industry, it was great to see a multitude of fun runs, road races and mass participation events gradually starting to return last year.

We also saw the resurgence of triathlons, swimming events and school sports days making a much-welcomed comeback. Let’s hope that this trend will continue during 2023.

January 2023 will also mark 35 years since I cofounded the business in 1988. Little did I imagine that it would have grown into the family business that it has today.

As more and more products have been added to our range, this year I have divided our services into 9 ‘Ultimate Guides’ to make it easier and quicker to navigate – I hope you like what you see.

For the last 16 years Running Imp and Events FR have competed against one another as two of the top companies in the industry. But now, with Neil Landry wishing to retire from the industry it made

perfect sense for Running Imp to acquire Events FR. Therefore, as of 1st October 2022, Running Imp Ltd acquired Events FR in a major acquisition, and we will continue to work very closely with Neil over the next year to ensure a seamless and successful transition.

On Thursday 20th October, The LincolnshireLive Business Awards, in partnership with the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, returned to the Lincolnshire Showground for the 18th year to toast success, celebrate achievement, and honour the innovative and resilient businesses doing great things in Lincolnshire.

This year, we were incredibly proud to have been shortlisted for the two awards that we had entered for the prestigious awards ceremony: the ‘Family Business of the Year’, and Josh Illsley for the ‘Young Achiever of the Year’. However, whilst we didn’t win the ‘Family Business of the Year’, it was great to hear Josh’s name being read out as the winner of the ‘Young Achiever of the Year’. But there was a huge surprise in store for us, as we would still come away from the evening celebrating winning two awards!

We were absolutely thrilled when it was announced that our CEO, Josh Illsley, had been awarded the ‘Young Achiever of the Year’.

Joining Running Imp Ltd, in 2016, Josh had reached the position of Operations Manager by 2019 - overseeing Running Imp’s team of 60+ people. This came not long before the start of the pandemic, during which Josh was responsible for helping Running Imp stay afloat.

During an exceedingly challenging period, Josh oversaw the restructuring of the business - figuring out where the business could cut costs and devising a new ‘virtual runs’ strategy that would bring in income while in-person events were postponed. Josh’s efforts undoubtedly helped Running Imp weather the storm and left us in a much stronger position for recovery when the pandemic ended.

The penultimate presentation on the night was a non-nomination category for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, which was decided solely by a panel of judges. As we sat and listened to the description of the achievements that the un-named recipient had accomplished, we soon realised that it was describing our Chairman Chris Illsley BEM, and when his name was finally announced as the winner, we were all speechless, especially Chris!

The ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ recognises the outstanding management and leadership of an individual throughout their whole career. It recognises who has made a career-long contribution to not only the industry they work within, but to charities and organisations they have made huge impacts on too. Certainly, the notable achievements of our Chairman, Chris Illsley BEM were recognised by the panel, and from this they were able to reach their conclusion, to present him with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’!

It was something special to see our Chairman, Chris Illsley BEM, being awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for all his incredible work since founding Running Imp in 1988, and for his outstanding contributions in the community and services to charity in Lincolnshire. But to see Chris and Josh on different chapters in life making positive contributions is one thing, to see them both be given individual recognition on the same night was nothing short of extraordinary!

To complete the challenge, you are required to:

Our medals are master bagged and pin badges are individually poly bagged as standard.

We reuse packaging from our supply chain, including shredding cardboard to use as packaging in our warehouse.

Our packaging is sourced, manufactured, and recycled using renewable energy.

Sustainability

At Running Imp we care passionately about the environment and sustainability. We are addressing how we run our operations, supply chain, packaging materials, water, and energy use.

All our medals are made from environmentally friendly metals that are 95% recyclable and aim to be 100% recyclable by 2025. We also offer a recycling scheme for leftover medals after your event. They can be returned to us to be recycled with a metal recycling firm, European Metal Recycling Ltd, who we have a strong partnership

For a smaller footprint, we offer wooden medals that are made from FSC 100% sustainable wood and samples can be sent upon

Our ribbons are made with environmentally friendly non-toxic inks and we offer Recyclable Heat Transfer and Recyclable RPET Yarn

We’re also conscious of plastics, and are working on removing it from our products and offering alternatives that are made from recyclable material - such as our flag branding material and supplying wooden stakes instead of plastic stakes.

Medal Production

Where are the medals manufactured?

All our bespoke medals are manufactured in our partner factories in China, for the very best quality at effectively wholesale prices.

How long will you need to produce my medals?

Once you have approved and ‘signed-off’ your medal artwork, if we use sea freight to transport your medals from China to the UK (the most economical), it will take up to 18 weeks, although depending on the time of year, this can be expedited.

I have heard that the medals can be produced and delivered in only 3-4 weeks, is that correct?

Yes, they can. Once you have ‘signed-off’ the artwork and approved your design it can take only 3-4 weeks to produce and deliver your medals if we use air freight.

Is there a surcharge for the medals to be flown in?

Yes there is a small surcharge which depends on the size of medals and quantity. We will give you an exact quotation at the time of ordering if you require this express delivery service.

Does the 4 or 18 week production lead time include delivery to me?

Yes.

What if I receive more entries than anticipated, can I order a ‘last minute top-up’ to my medal order?

Yes. We can produce a ‘top-up’ to your order within a lead time of 2-3 weeks.

How can I work out the price if my medals are an irregular shape?

Simply send us a diagram showing us the shape and size of your required medal and we will give you an exact quotation within 24 hours.

Can medals be thicker than 3mm?

Yes. We can produce medals in any thickness up to 20mm thick.

Simply follow our 6-step guide below.

1. Tell us what style of bespoke medal you would like.

2. Tell us the quantity you require.

3. Tell us the shape, size, finish, ribbon detail, enamelling colours (if any), optional extras (if any) and date required by. Then send us a rough sketch of your medal design with your guidelines and any logos (if any) that you want incorporating. Alternatively, talk through your design idea with a member of our staff who will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

4. We will then submit a quotation for your approval based upon your specific requirements.

5. Once you have accepted our quotation, we will then provide you with medal artwork for approval within 3 to 4 working days.

6. Once you have approved your medal artwork, we will commence production and deliver within your requested timescale.

Please Note

• A small minority of medals may have imperfections in the wood such as knots.

• If excessive pressure is applied to the wood or to the ribbon clip, this may cause the medal and ribbon hole to snap.

• The design clarity and etching tone may differ from each medal.

• The edges of the medal should not have any splinters or create any, however, a splinter may be present in very few cases.

• After laser engraving has been completed, a burnt odour will be present; this will remain on the finished product.

• In some cases, a small amount of scratching may appear where a clip-on ribbon has been attached.

The New Balance Big Relay is held on the same spectacular 13.1-mile course as The Big Half, which weaves from Tower Bridge in central London to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, and is split into four legs of around 5K each. This means participants can soak up the atmosphere of the half marathon event without having to go the full distance! In 2021, the finishers’ medals were designed so that when all 4 relay segments were connected, the reverse of the medals displayed the events slogan “We Run As One”.

Where are the pin badges manufactured?

All our custom lapel pin badges are manufactured at our partner factories in China, for the very best quality at effectively wholesale prices.

I have heard that the pin badges can be produced and delivered in 3-4 weeks, is that correct?

Yes they can. Once you have ‘signed-off’ the artwork and approved your design it can take only 4-6 weeks, or even less, to produce and deliver your pin badges using air freight.

Is there a surcharge for the pin badges to be flown in?

No.

I only have a rough sketch of my pin badge design. Is that OK?

Yes. Simply send us your guidelines with any logos/images (if there are any you want incorporating), and we will design your pin badge for you FREE of Charge

How long will it take for me to receive artwork back from you for approval?

Firstly we will send you a quotation. Once you have accepted our quotation, we will then proceed with your pin badge design which you should normally receive within 3 to 4 working days, or even less.

When I have received my pin badge design back for approval, what if I require any changes?

No problem. We will amend your design until you are completely happy with it!

Will there be any charge for these amendments?

We offer up to 3 opportunities for unlimited amendments at no additional cost. Any changes thereafter may incur a design surcharge of £50.

Can I change my pin badge design without incurring a new die charge?

Yes, you can keep the same die and simply change the enamel colour to freshen up your design year on year.

Hints & Tips When Organising a Colour Run

Colour Runs, Colour Dashes or Rainbow Runs, as they are sometimes called, are held over distances of approximately 5K, although they can be over any distance as accuracy is not important as they tend to be non-competitive.

They are becoming increasingly popular and a fun event for all the family to take part in, as well as a great way to help raise vital funds for charities.

So, if you are thinking of staging a Colour Run for the first time and are unsure of how many colour stations to have and how much colour powder to order, we have drawn up a simple step-by-step visual guide with suggestions that will hopefully help you along the way.

However, if you are still unsure or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us - we will be more than happy to help out.
