30 Years - Doesn’t Time Fly! Well I didn’t expect to be writing about celebrating 30 years in business. It’s a far cry from when I was a young PE teacher breaking 3 hours for the first time in the inaugural London Marathon and organising running events in my spare time. Doesn’t time fly! So where do I start, well at the beginning I suppose. It was January 1988, I’d just lost my dad, resigned from my job as a Leisure Centre Manager and our first child Kate was just 6 months old (she’s now the Senior Manager at Running Imp!). We combined our knowledge of event organisation, turned it on its head and focused on supplying events - The Running Imp (as we were affectionately first known) was born, deriving our name from the love of the sport and Lincoln’s ‘infamous’ Imp in our historic Cathedral.

In 2000 we had Millennium House purpose-built to accommodate our increased warehousing needs and staffing levels of 20 and thought we were there to stay…how wrong we were!

We weren’t disappointed. The Diamond Jubilee saw us grow beyond our wildest dreams, and now in 2018, employ almost 70 staff - a far cry from our humble beginnings in Branston Close. There have been ups and downs but lots of fun times too; from winning awards to sadly losing family, friends and even a young work colleague. One thing that we are all very proud of was in 2009 we introduced our annual Charity of the Year which has resulted in thousands of pounds being raised for worthy causes over the years. Millennium House - 2000-2011

Branston Close - 1988-1990 The ‘foot and mouth’ epidemic of 2001 nearly forced us into a 3 day week but in 2002 the Queen’s Golden Jubilee got us back on track, supplying coins, medals and memorabilia nationwide. In 2007 we acquired Running Imp UK, an offshoot of when the company went its separate ways in 1989, and changed our name back to Running Imp.

Starting from home, we quickly developed our one-stop-shopping policy. But after just 9 months working from our spare room and shed, the last straw with the neighbours was when an articulated lorry knocked down one of the lamp posts in our close whilst delivering our wares - we knew we had to move! So in 1990 we moved into a small rented unit employing our first member of staff and changed our name to Running Imp International (which I will explain why later). Quickly growing the 3 of us became 8 and one unit became 2 then 3 and we then operated from there for almost 10 years. At this point we must give a special mention to our longest serving employee Faye who joined us in 1991 as the Office Junior - 27 years later she is now the Managing Director of the Company - well done Faye, we wouldn’t be where we are now without you!

As I said previously we thought we were there to stay, But with the acquisition we soon grew to over 30 staff and were once again at breaking point, with nowhere to park and struggling for office space - it was time to move again!

As technology has changed so has our business, but our 4 key aims of service, advice, choice and value hasn’t. Our customers always come first and many have been with us for years - we salute you. So here we are celebrating 3 decades in business with a new company rebrand, modern facilities and plenty of room for expansion. But what will the future hold and where will technology take us during our next chapter - only time will tell.

Jubilee House - 2018 With the next generation now working within the business, they are keeping us on our toes and ensuring we move with the times. Having instilled family values into the business from day one it is nice to see them continue this and it will be one thing that we never change! Since 1988 we have seen many changes in technology. From typing out invoices on a typewriter (how would we cope with doing that now), to buying this breakthrough invention called a fax machine in 1989 which at the time was the biggest thing since sliced bread. To our first computer that had a green screen (remember those?), to everyday things we now take for granted, like smart phones, ultra fast computers, the internet and emails - how on earth did we manage without emails!

Now with plenty of parking and office space it allowed for the expected growth that the Diamond Jubilee would hopefully bring and for any future expansions internally and externally.

Charity of the Year 2018, How to Order & Contact Us MattDotCom - Our Charity of the Year 2018 Each year we adopt a charity to whom we donate money to from the sale of medals and company fundraising projects. We are delighted to announce that our Charity of the Year for 2018 is MattDotCom. MattDotCom is a small local charity and the brainchild of Sharon and David Harding-Price after their son Matthew was admitted to hospital in 2000 with cancer, and found how hard it was for teenagers to continue their education and stay in touch with friends, so he would “borrow” dad’s laptop to complete his schoolwork. Their aim is to provide children between 12 and 19 inclusive, who are suffering from a long term or life-threatening illness, access to computer technology, thereby enabling them to continue their education and maintain contact with their school and friends.

To also develop key life skills whilst helping them cope with their treatment and illness, in either hospital or at home. MattDotCom relies totally on donations from members of the public, local businesses and fundraising. They are then able to provide the teenagers with the equipment required for them to continue their education, maintain communication and have some distraction from the painful treatment that they are going through. They will receive a laptop, tablet or ipad plus any printing or internet access hardware they may require and can get support until they complete their full-time education.

It is hoped that our contribution will help make a significant difference to such a worthy cause.

Inflated Anywhere Each gantry comes with a freestanding blower which will inflate it within seconds. Both petrol and electric blowers are now available; the advantage of a petrol blower is that the gantry can be inflated anywhere, and not restricted to a nearby power point.

Prices

Where are the medals manufactured? All our bespoke medals are manufactured in our partner factories in China, for the very best quality at effectively wholesale prices.

If I only have a rough sketch of my medal design, is that alright? Yes. Simply send us your guidelines with any logos (if any) you want incorporating and we will design the medal for you FREE of Charge! (see FREE Design Service on page 104).

How do I work out my medal price? All prices shown are based on circular 3mm thick medals. For example, if your design is 50mm in diameter look in the 50mm column prices etc.

How long will you need to produce my medals? Once you have approved and ‘signed-off’ your medal artwork, if we use sea freight to transport your medals from China to the UK (the most economical), it will take up to 12 weeks, although depending on the time of year, this can be expedited. I have heard that the medals can be produced and delivered in only 5-6 weeks, is that correct? Yes, they can. Once you have ‘signed-off’ the artwork and approved your design it can take only 5-6 weeks to produce and deliver your medals if we use air freight. Is there a surcharge for the medals to be flown in? Yes there is a nominal surcharge. Depending on the size of medals and quantity, it can be less than 25p per medal. We will give you an exact quotation at the time of ordering if you require this express delivery service.

Die Charges How do I know how many dies I will be charged for? You will only be charged a die for each side that has a design. What if exactly the same design is on both sides of the medal? You will be charged for 2 dies. What if my design has ‘cut-outs’? You will only be charged for one die if the reverse of your medal is plain.

How long will it take for me to receive artwork back from you for approval? Normally within 3 to 4 working days. When I have received my medal design back for approval, what if I require some changes? No problem, we will keep amending your design until you are completely happy with it! Will there be any charge for these amendments? Absolutely not.

How can I work out the price if my medals are not circular or rectangular? Simply send us a diagram showing us the shape and size of your required medal (it can be ANY shape including with cut-outs) and we will give you an exact quotation within 24 hours. Can medals be thicker or thinner than 3mm? Yes. We can produce medals in any thickness from 2mm up to 20mm thick (see page 61). How will this affect my price? As a general guideline please add 14% to our printed prices for every 1mm of additional medal thickness required. However, please contact us with your specific requirements and we will give you an exact quotation within 24 hours.

Can I have printed ribbons? Yes. We can overprint your ribbons in a single colour or multicolour, please contact us with your specific requirements.

Will there be any extra charge for this? No. What Medal Finishes are available? We have a variety of medal finishes to choose from. See page 62 or contact us for a FREE swatch of sample finishes.

Do you have any other optional extras for medals? Yes. We have a variety of optional extras that will further enhance your medals (see page 64).

Does the 6 or 12 week production lead time include delivery to me? Yes. What if I receive more entries than anticipated, can I order a ‘last minute top-up’ to my medal order? Yes. We can produce a ‘top-up’ to your order within a lead time of 3-4 weeks.

I understand that you have different background stipple effects that I can incorporate into my design? Yes. We have a variety of background stipple effects that can be incorporated into your design (see page 60). Simply quote the stipple effect number(s) on your mock-up or contact us for a FREE sample.

What if my medals are rectangular? If the longest side is at least 20mm more than the shorter side, for example 60mm x 40mm, look under the 60mm prices, and if they are 50mm x 30mm look under the 50mm prices etc.

Main medal with 5 interchangeable mini medals

We introduced bespoke ‘Tagged’ medals last year for White Star Running when they required a main medal that allowed a different ‘mini medal’ to be hung or tagged from it. With the East Farm Frolic (see bottom), the event consisted of running solo or in teams of 2, 3 or 4 as many laps of the 4 mile course as possible through woodland, two farmyards, open fields and a big hill within the 12 hour time limit. They had a main medal and then 4 different ‘mini medals’ which hung underneath depending on the team size - for solo runners, pairs, teams of 3 or teams of 4. To get the bling, all the competitors had to do was complete at least one lap each and then feel free to sit in the bar next to the transition area where the runners swapped from one to another and cheer everyone on, re-joining at any time they wished in the 12 hour time limit. Rik Vercoe & the Phoenix Explorer Rik Vercoe in December 2013 ran two back-toback 7 marathons in 7 days event series in Long Beach California, where the icing on the cake was breaking the already existing 10 Marathons in 10 Days Guinness World Record.

Taking his inspiration from an ancient ship’s wheel and compass, it features a flying Phoenix on a map of the world incorporating the venues of the World’s 6 Major Marathons. This much sought after limited edition medal will be worn with pride and treasured for a lifetime - the Phoenix Explorer - The World’s Largest Finisher’s Medal.

What if it gets In my eyes?

Is the colour powder edible?

Is the colour powder safe?

Rain should wash away the colour powder from either the grass, pavements or roads or you can use a hose or leaf blower.

To get the colour powder out of hair and off skin it is best to do it whilst it is still dry. Shake it off first then just wash as normal and maybe repeat.

Just rinse with water and everything will be ok as our powder is non-toxic but for added eye protection we recommend wearing a pair of our sunglasses.

Yes it is. It is 100% safe to ingest but we advise you to wear it, not eat it!
