Full Speed Ahead

It appears that the run specialty is back running at full speed as The Running Event 2022 once again laid claim as the most important three days of the year on the industry’s calendar. The event, held Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Austin, TX, boasted the largest show floor ever – 66,340-square feet to be exact – 279 exhibiting companies, a full slate of packed educational sessions, an expansion into the outdoors specialty with the new Switchback section and enough special events to keep everyone busy and inspired.

Indeed, inspiration seemed to be the buzzword at TRE, as the more than 3200 run and outdoor specialty retailers, brands and industry professionals uniformly agreed that the industry has coped with the COVID-induced challenges and disruptions of the past three years and has emerged stronger and more resilient than ever.

“From retailers and event management professionals to exhibiting brands and our partner organizations, everyone at this year’s show was buzzing with energy,” says Christina Henderson, event director of The Running Event and publisher of Running Insight. “The excitement around the educational program, the exhibit hall and the new initiatives for 2022 was evident and everyone on both sides of the aisle was ecstatic with the value provided at this year’s show.”

Some of the highlights: • TRE 2022 opened Tuesday, November

29, with a conference program featuring dozens of sessions covering the latest industry trends, best practices and career development insights.

• Also on Tuesday was the standingroom-only keynote presentation “Daring to Do Things Differently,” presented by Olympian and Saysh founder Allyson Felix.

• Tuesday closed with the Opening Night Reception, providing an opportunity

for exhibitors and attendees to network and celebrate Day One of TRE 2022.

• The largest exhibit hall in TRE history opened its doors Wednesday, November 30, to a long line of attendees waiting to rush over to the Brooks Running booth for a free pair of sneakers. Specialty retail professionals explored new products and met with brands while also tuning in to educational sessions at the Training Camp Theater, located on the show floor.

• Closing out TRE 2022 on Friday was the show’s firstever Trail Cleanup. Retailers, brands and TRE event management headed out to the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail to pick up trash and give back to the beloved Austin trail.

THE RUN INDUSTRY HONORS ITS OWN

• New for 2022, Switchback at TRE provided a space for outdoor specialty retailers and brands to connect, learn and do business while also accessing new opportunities within the run specialty space.

“Rumpl was a first-time vendor at The Running Event and we were thrilled with the success we had at the show,” says Patrick O’Neil, VP–revenue at Rumpl. “We were able to introduce the Rumpl brand and our categorydefining puffy blankets to the run specialty retail community while forming great connections with many like-minded brands.”

• Thursday kicked off with the Indie 5K, where 400 runners and walkers hit the track at Circuit of The Americas – home to the only Formula 1 and MotoGP races in the country – and then explored the post-race expo.

• Strava challenge Strides for Progress concluded with more than 4100 participants logging nearly 73,000 miles of activities, far surpassing the original goal of 35,000 miles. As a result, $30,000 of donations will be equally distributed to five Texas nonprofits: Austin Angels, Austin Justice Coalition, The Lilith Fund, The Texas Civil Rights Project and Texas Campaign for the Environment Fund. Donations were made possible by premium partner Body Glide and partners Brooks, Hoka and OS1st. The Running Event also contributed toward the total donation.

• On Thursday the show floor continued with the inaugural For Every Run Film Festival, presented by Pacers Running, CITIUS MAG, and The Running Event. Emceed by CITIUS MAG’s Chris

Chavez and Kyle Merber, the festival recognized the best content from the world of running and screened the top films, featured selected photography and provided space for industry professionals and creators to come together.

• Following the film festival, the 2022 Best Running Stores and Industry Awards Reception kicked off with Balega, Brooks, On and Saucony each presenting awards to individual retailers and stores. (See sidebar for recipients of these awards.)

The 2022 Best Running Stores were then recognized, unveiling the Top Four Best Running Stores: Fleet Feet Louisville, Ridgefield Running Company, Palmetto Running Company and Shu’s Idaho Running Company. Ridgefield Running Company was named 2022 Store of the Year. (see page 34 for a complete report

One of the highlights of the closing night party at The Running Event was the annual Industry Awards ceremony, presented by a number of brands and recognizing individuals and stores for their special contributions to the run specialty business.

• The Saucony Run for Good Award was presented to 1st Place Sports.

• The Ubuntu Award, presented by Balega, went to Charm City Run.

• On’s Impact Award went to Nick Kovaleski, of A Runner’s Mind.

• The Brooks Run Happy Rising Star Award was presented to four individuals: Tom Mansfield, Charm City Run; Lance Muzslay, Sole Sports; Josh Lacan, Red Coyote Running and Fitness; and Andrea Lehmkuhler, Point 2 Running. One of the more emotional moments came with a special Brooks Run Happy Rising Star Award to Kelly Lanzafame, of Fleet Feet Rochester, who passed away earlier this year after her nomination for the award. n

The energy generated by The Running Event comes from a level of fitness that is a bit rare at most business trade shows. Sure, other conferences have enthusiastic speakers, but if they ran a 5K one morning of the show would the winner be under eight minutes per mile, let alone under five? And what would get them there?

Performance running footwear sits at the heart The Running Event, held Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Austin, TX. Nearly every brand with a presence in run specialty shops claims a spot on the show floor, eagerly displaying and discussing its upcoming products.

And many of those same footwear models were seen speeding around the Circuit of the Americas at Thursday morning’s Indie 5K, including the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro that served as the event’s feature shoe.

Most of them even looked fast just sitting on the displays around the Austin Convention Center, so with that kind of encouragement who wouldn’t be ready to launch into full stride. Here is a snapshot of 15 of the shoes/brands from two days of touring the booths of the Running Event that will make an impact at retail in 2023.

1. 361

The progress the brand has made on several fronts, from upper materials, films, and constructs; to the wide variety of midsole foams and processes, geometric solutions and plates, have created something for everyone. The Centauri incorporates a pelletized midsole of Dow Engage for protective daily training, joining the Fierce – a moderately tall stack model for recovery miles – and their plated racer, the Flame, on the road

in a literal footrace. They have a little something for many runners with more on the way.

2. ADIDAS

The running footwear teams at Adidas have developed a pretty impressive lineup of running shoes during the pandemic and beyond. I don’t use the term “plethora” lightly, but at The Running Event this year it seems appropriate to consider it because there were shoes for niches in running, racing, trail, cross-country, marathoning and track... you get the picture. One shoe that caught my attention was the SL, a sturdy performer that can stack on the miles but with an eye on the budget, an area that seems to have taken a beating since last year’s show. Look for a wave

of three striped footwear cascading to market in the coming months.

3. ALTRA

The Altra story – zero drop and foot shaped toebox – continues to resonate with the brand, as well as with the stores and the runners that have buoyed their sales and success. Highlighted was the Rivera 3 with a slightly narrower forefoot profile, but still foot shaped, and with a nice blend of cushion and response from its Altra Ego foam. No faulty cylinders here as all are firing well and with precision, thank you very much.

4. ASICS

supercritical foam, responsive, protective and pretty cool. Clever marketing to be sure. Our sneak peek was a good one, but our short editorial deadline and publishing schedule leaves the reveal to another source, dear readers. When you see it elsewhere, know that you’ll be as impressed as we were. But, with that said, the Superblast is the latest tall stack cruiser to consider from the land of the rising sun.

5. BROOKS

Industriousness extends from the president to customer service and all in between. While they have continued to build on their entire line, one new shoe in particular stands out because of the niche it fills. The new Hyperion Max is testament to the pipeline of success that shows in their shoes and provides a daily tall stack trainer, sans carbon plate, for a plush running experience from its super-critical foam.

6. CRAFT

Craft’s rise to footwear proficiency may surprise some, but there is always a magician behind the curtain making things happen, regardless of the size of the company. Round three of footwear for Craft shows the steady progression that comes from the combination of skill and planning, which their combined experience has delivered. The CTM series will continue to turn heads that have not observed Craft’s steady progress and I expect to cover more than a few miles (and even more kilometers) in the new Nordlite Ultra, which makes use of a supercritical foam which Craft denotes as Cr.

7. HOKA

Innovation and consistency are the two watchwords of Hoka as a brand.

Originally in a disruptive mode, tall stack shoes in a sea of minimalism, their current position is akin to a World Cup contender, it’s all about execution. There are new updates in racing, as well as trail. The Rocket X 2 – des rigueur for a fast halfmarathon or marathon – is newly fashioned from upper to sole with carbon fiber for racing performance. A new upper goes to the Tecton X, last season’s carbon trail speedster.

8. NEW BALANCE

Between their sponsorship of the New York Marathon and their impressive new facility, called simply The Track, running is infused through the genetic code of New Balance. They have a focus across the board, so there is something for all kinds of running from racing to trail, daily running, tempos and paces between. The Super Comp Trainer 2 updates last year’s innovation for the brand, and manages the faster training for the marathon , as well as doubling as a racing shoe for the masses.

9. MIZUNO

Mizuno captured eyeballs at TRE with the unveiling of its uber-distinctive Wave Rebellion Pro. The result of Mizuno’s Smooth Speed Project, the sprint spike-inspired Rebellion Pro is aimed at helping marathon runners and integrates a few different innovations into one daring model. Featured materials include Mizuno Enerzy Lite and Mizuno Enerzy Lite+ midsole foams, a carbon-infused nylon plate and a new geometric midsole design with a carved-away heel. And how about this fun fact on the Rebellion Pro’s Kakizome print colorway spotlighted on the show floor: like a fingerprint, every midsole aesthetic is different, the result of a hand-splattered paint process employed during production.

10. NIKE

Trail running is once again a Nike focus in response to other plated trail shoes, though with a Swooshy twist. The assigned moniker seems as long as the trail – Nike ZoomX Ultrafly Trail – though is at least descriptive. The midsole features Air and a carbon plate for protection and performance. The longtime waffle tread, that Nike is perhaps most noted for (well, along with Air), is affixed to the midsole for traction, just as the spirit of Bill Bowerman intended with his waffle iron.

11. ON

The range of running shoes from On Running is expanding. Not only that, but they are also morphing as they continue to chase performance. The Cloud’s outersole elements, which deform to cushion the foot, are taking on more ovoid shapes to conform efficiently when contacting the ground, for both cushioning and propulsion. The upper constructions and treatments are also upgrading to better fit, breathe and repel the elements and weather.

12. PUMA

The efforts by Puma, over the past couple of years have resulted in an unveiling of new products that have created considerable interest. The stir has been a bit surprising because of the brands’ series of stops and starts in running. The release of well-designed and engineered products have returned the spotlight’s focus back on runners.

The supercritical foams and highquality designs have created an increasing line of shoes for more runners. This season features the ForeverRun Nitro, a versatile running shoe that extends Nitro to the stability category.

13. REEBOK

Prior to Reebok’s spin-off from Adidas there was some genuine innovation around a number of sustainable practices, which produced some very effective running shoes, including a couple models which were as close to truly sustainable as we have yet seen. Their focus continues to concentrate efforts on producing, among other things, some very good running shoes which incorporate materials and designs that lightly touch the environment, while paying homage to their past.

14. SKECHERS

The running line in Skechers

Performance division has been managed effectively for runners of all shapes and sizes. The early adoption of several key technologies, thanks to an agile, efficient and wellconnected team has given them a jump in performance that has not slowed, as many of these advances have spread across other brands. New processes and applications, such as the coming season’s pelletized foams, and efficient geometries have kept the hits coming, much to the benefit of runners over all distances.

15. VIMAZI

A new company that differentiates itself from its competing brands by taking physics to another level. Each model is designed to accommodate the difference in forces based on the pace a runner is traveling. Well-made and nicely finished, they received a fair bit of attention at The Running Event, with runners trying out the shoes for a quick run around a corner of the exhibition hall to experience the feel of the shoes. Time will tell whether the launch concept is a success, but the science is sound and the product is good, so that is a step in the right direction. n

Fast-Forward At Fleet Feet

It’s 2022 marathon weekend in New York City and the Fleet Feet Columbus Circle store located on the southern edge of Manhattan’s Central Park is hopping. A line of customers extends 10 deep at checkout. In two days, the store will record more sales than many U.S. running stores capture in a month.

Amid this controlled madness, a young female customer approaches the cash wrap. She looks at the fit, fortysomethingish man behind the counter with brown curly hair and a decidedly un-New York City tone to his voice.

“Are you the CEO?” she asks.

“Yes, I am,” the man responds.

After a quick exchange, the woman –Molly McQueeny, the digital marketing manager at Fleet Feet Chicago in town for the NYC Marathon – requests a photo. Joey Pointer happily obliges, leaning over the cash wrap to squeeze his smile into the frame.

For two days, Pointer worked the register at the Columbus Circle store, spending some 15 hours checking out customers, interacting with staff and dealing with quirky inefficiencies the CEO of the nation’s largest running store chain wouldn’t have discovered if not for this adventure on his retail operation’s frontlines.

“It was an eye-opening experience,” Pointer recalls during a conversation with Running Insight editorial staff at The Running Event on November 30. “Just

The Year That Was

It’s been a wild year for Pointer, a man who joined the Fleet Feet enterprise 18 years ago when the upstart company used AOL email addresses and was a big fish in the run specialty pond, not the rhino it is today with nearly 300 stores and 2000 employees.

Recall that just prior to The Running Event in 2021, news broke that Fleet Feet was acquiring the nation’s secondlargest running store chain, JackRabbit, and its dozens of locations across 15 states. For Pointer and his leadership team, the headline-grabbing deal ignited a long to-do list.

As such, much of the last year has revolved around integrating JackRabbit stores into the Fleet Feet enterprise and solving market conflicts in metro areas such as Cincinnati,

where existing Fleet Feet franchisees Frank and Stacey DeJulius agreed to purchase four JackRabbit stores –shops originally a part of Bob Roncker’s run specialty empire – from Fleet Feet corporate.

In transitioning JackRabbit stores to Fleet Feet operations, Pointer and his leadership team embraced an insideout approach. It began with immediately converting JackRabbit’s tech stack, from point-of-sale systems to gift cards, before flipping the employee and customer experience, which included introducing the brand’s fit id 3D-foot scanning experience to JackRabbit showrooms.

Now, Pointer says, Fleet Feet is working to connect the final pieces, such as installing Fleet Feet signage on the exterior of all locations. By the end of 2023’s first quarter, Pointer hopes the puzzle is complete.

“Of course, we wanted to snap our fingers and have it

“We didn’t buy JackRabbit to check something off the list,” Pointer says. “We kept our eyes on what’s next.”

Fleet Feet Marches On

Ask Pointer for one word to describe his last year at the helm of Fleet Feet and he pauses. Thoughtful and methodical, his mind circles for a single term to describe a year that brought its share of challenges and triumphs. He looks up.

“Humbling,” he says. “A lot of people are counting on the decisions I make. Even if I don’t make decisions in isolation, that responsibility hits me every day.”

A self-professed lover of growth, Pointer says he wants to fast forward five years from now to assess Fleet Feet’s fortunes. Did the decisions he make pan out? How are operating partners doing?

But Pointer understands life doesn’t have a fast forward button. He must exist in the present, even if today’s decisions – the people he promotes, the stores he selects for renovations, the systems he chooses – impact tomorrow’s results.

At present, about 40 percent of Fleet Feet stores are company-owned operations with the remaining owned by franchisees. Pointer favors that ratio and aims to grow on the franchised side with a mixture of existing owners and new partners, particularly in untapped markets. He also continues to actively consider acquisitions.

“We know we’re going to open more stores,” he says. “We’re in a sailboat and we’ll see where it goes.”

But growth, Pointer notes, does not have to come solely from opening new stores. It can also come from heightening brand awareness, which he admits lags in some markets.

Alongside goals to build a portfolio of 400 stores and reach $1 billion in systemwide sales – the latter being an if-not-when proposition for Pointer – the Fleet Feet CEO wants to increase brand awareness 75 percent over the coming years. His ultimate goal: to build a 100-year-old brand, a target still more than a half-century away.

“Our success is based on being a community retailer,” he says. “So long as we hold this near and dear, our best days are yet to come.” n

And they’re off: More than 400 runners took part in the annual Indie 5K held early Thursday morning at the unique Circuit of the Americas course.

After three full days of education, exhibits and networking, The Running Event 2022 closed on Thursday, Dec. 1, with an appropriately festive evening honoring The Best Running Stores.

Highlighting the evening was the announcement of Ridgefield Running Company as the 2022 Store of the Year.

While we are their biggest cheerleaders, they have become ours, it’s truly a team effort. To our team it is acknowledgement that what they do daily is being recognized by the industry. History: It all started with a club. When Rob Fyfe moved from New York to Bluffton, SC, in 2010 he noticed something was missing — a running community. So he began connecting area runners and walkers and started the PRC Run Club. After realizing the demand for a specialty running store in the Lowcountry area, Rob decided to take the next step and open up Palmetto Running Company in Bluffton in 2011. A year later, Christian Fyfe (Rob’s son) joined him in ownership of the business and helped grow the company and brand to where it is today, including opening a second store location on Hilton Head Island in 2014. Keri (Rob’s daughter) joined the team in 2018 with a focus on marketing and visual merchandising and helped to create a cohesive brand story for the company.

In Their Words: “Here at PRC we are doing our best to ‘Protect the Ground You Run On.’ In late 2019, we launched The PRC Eco-Initiative with the collective goal to purchase and sell more environmentally responsible products as well as find new ways to improve the sustainability of our planet and more directly, our local environment. With the support we received both in our local community and the overall running industry, as well as being recognized at last year’s The Running Event with the Impact Award presented by On Running, co-owners Christian and Keri felt it was the right time to take our mission to the industry level. I think our ability to share our passion, our efforts to make a difference in the community and continuing the conversation with the products we sell in store is what has created such a bond with our customers and our community.”

Key Personnel: Everyone is an essential part of the business and the success of it.

History: The store was started by Mike Shuman and his wife, Kathyrn (Kit), in 1997 under a different business name. In

2008, the name was changed to Shu’s Idaho Running Company and has operated under that name in the same location since then.

In 2020, Mike’s health became more of a priority and Leone Rusher stepped into the role of running the store. Rusher played a huge part in the business starting in the early 2000s and it has progressed into more and more responsibility. In 2022, not knowing what Mike’s health journey was going to entail, Rusher purchased the store from him, wanting to carry on what Mike had started — making people aware of the benefits of running not only physically, but mentally as well.

In Their Words: “Our customer service is top

notch. We strive to make the customers feel very welcome when they walk through the doors. We also believe our genuine interest in the customer is very important, helps them to feel more comfortable coming in. Plus, we love what we do and it shows through to the customer and/or community. We also help with a lot of events through providing prizes, equipment and/or consulting and spreading the word about what’s happening within our community.”

Their Local Running Community: “Our community is a very active one. There are miles of trails within walking distance of the store and we have the greenbelt that runs along the river from one end of town through to the joining town. There are several events on the weekends, sometimes just in one day there can be a few different races. The running community is very supportive of each other and the events around town.”

What the Award Means to Them: “Winning the award means an incredible amount. We’ve overcome a lot of obstacles over the last few years and we pushed forward to where we are today. As for the staff, they are very excited and proud to be a part of something so great and the impact they are making on the community and individuals.”

Advice to Retailers: “If you love what you do, it’s never work and the enjoyment shows on our faces every day. The customers will see that joy and love the atmosphere of the environment.”

Their Local Running Community: Durham is a beautiful, diverse, gritty mix of the old meets new. Originally a tobacco manufacturing town and made famous for the iconic baseball movie, Bull Durham, it is now a hub of tech start-ups and entrepreneurs, surrounded by thee world-class research universities and Division 1 athletic programs. The Triangle area, which Durham is a part of, is the number one destination in the United States for relocation. It’s growing quickly and so is our local running community.

It was initially a partnership between former professional distance runners Scott Dvorak and Eric Hichman (the latter departed the company in 2003). Dvorak opened a second store in South Charlotte in 2006. In 2009, Donny Forsyth joined CRC as the first brand partner with his purchase of the Promenade store in South Charlotte from Forsythe. The CRC owners group expanded in 2011 with the addition of Todd Joefreda, who partnered with Dvorak to open the Mooresville store (as well as the Northlake location that closed earlier this year) in 2014. In 2016, Joefreda left CRC, and with the purchase of both the Northlake and Mooresville locations, Jamie Davis joined the ownership group. That same year, Dvorak and Forsythe partnered to open the Riverwalk location.

History: Charm City Run, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, was founded in 2002 by husband and wife, Josh and Kara Levinson. Since opening the first store in Timonium, the business has since expanded to include seven locations throughout Maryland and one store in Delaware.

In Their Words: “As a business, we are three-pronged. Our eight retail locations offer a one-stop-shop for all your running and exercise needs including apparel, accessories, nutrition and more. We also offer training groups to help you whether you’re attempting your first race or striving for a new personal record. From 5Ks to middle-distance to triathlons, Charm City Run Events offers the best in racing in the Mid-Atlantic region. Our retail locations, training programs and races have many benefits, but our real accomplishment is the lifelong friendships that have been created and the healthy habits that have been cultivated. Making a difference is ingrained in our corporate culture. Charm City Run is also unique because in 2020 we created the Live. Give. Run. Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to officially support the Maryland-based organizations and programs that Charm City Run has been supporting for over 20 years. We do not push any brands, we do not upsell our community and there is a treadmill on-site for use during fittings. We also have a state-of-the-art gait analysis system that we can use for more in-depth fittings and to recognize issues a person may be having while moving. We are locally owned and community grown and we have huge weekly run groups and we call ourselves a run family. During demo runs with brands, we have been known to have more than 100 people attend.”

We take great pride in our specialty fit process, so seeing our report card really made us proud. History: Michele and Mitch Allen love running and each other (not necessarily in that order). The two met on the running trails in Dallas and got married in 2003, surrounded by their running friends. In 2009 they moved to San Antonio, where they opened iRun Texas at the Stone Oak location. Each having some 40 years of running experience, they shared that knowledge and passion with their customers, while providing a place for runners to connect. There was a lot of love for just one store, so Michele and Mitch made room for more runners in their lives: They opened a second iRun location in 2012 and a third store in the Dominion area in 2015. When Michele and Mitch aren’t at one of their stores, they’re home, where they have 11-plus acres, and enjoy raising bees, goats, two dogs, a Longhorn and a donkey.

In Their Words: “iRun continues to grow and look for ways to expand our customer base into different parts of our large and spread-out city. We continue to expand our community involvement and our brand awareness. Retail is an everchanging industry and our staff knows we need to offer our customers something they can’t get online. Our staff goes above and beyond to learn about upcoming technology and trends. We work hard to never bring in an item we wouldn’t want to use ourselves. Their Local Running Community: “San Antonio is a big city, but very spread out. There are pockets of runners around the city and they tend to stay within that pocket. For this reason, we have focused our business on the northern corridor of SA and our locations are rather close together. Each location’s customer shops a little different and we have curated the stores based that locations customer base. We also try to be strategic and plan special events based on the customers at that location. Because the stores are close, we can rotate our training classes to each location. Our class members tend to be our best customers and therefore it is exciting to them to see new and different product as we rotate through the training schedule.”

History: Haddonfield Running Company opened in March, 1997 when Walsh was in college at Lehigh. Then, in 2005 while working at New Balance as a footwear engineer and living in Boston, he was approached about buying the store, so he decided to roll the dice to get back to South Jersey. For the first year, he lived in the back of the store, and then with Bruzek for another year until they opened the Mullica Hill location. From there, the pair opened Moorestown, moved the Haddonfield store to a bigger location and eventually added the Medford location. The company’s name was later changed to RunningCo. to match the website. Today, the business is a four-store family known as the RunningCo. of South Jersey.

Pete Vaughn has been with the company since 2010 and John Carr since 2019. Both started as part-time employees. With one brick-and-mortar location, the business also has an event management company (Running Zone Race Management) and a non-profit foundation that produces running and walking events called the Running Zone Foundation.

In Their Words: “As a team, we set a very high customer service bar for ourselves and work to maintain that every single day. As owners, we want to create the best possible work environment for our team members.”

Their Local Running Community: “ Our community is very

age-diverse and we see a lot of different people at all the races and group runs. A typical 5K race in our area has a few finishers in the 17-18 minute range, but also several in the hour-plus range. The positive atmosphere is the same for both of those groups, which makes it a special event. Most people in our area are “transplants” (not originally from Florida) so we see all different backgrounds and experiences. What the Award Means to Them: “This award means a lot — as a store we have won the award many times, but this is our first year as owners so it is very exciting but from a new perspective.”

History: Schaller, an avid runner and triathlete, founded the store in 2013 after 14 years as a CPA in corporate tax drove her to off-ramp her high-pressure accounting career and open a small business centered around something she loved: running! RunWell operates one store in the heart of the Edwardsville community, right at the hub for the MCT Trail network, which spans more than 100 miles of multi-use paved trails.

In Their Words: “Our mission is to keep our community connected, motivated and celebrated. We have several fun, free community events and we look at our store as a community center for active people. We launched the Where Do You RunWell mobile phone app where runners can upload photos before, during or after a run, pin the map and tell us where they RunWell around the world. They can compete in challenges, earn rewards, win prizes, invite their friends, find their next event or shop with us. We have weekly group runs, themed run, trail runs, ladies-only runs and more, and we have a coaching company that has trained hundreds of runners. We also

have a blog, newsletter, VIP program, racing team, 1000 Mile Challenge, Mighty Cubs running camp for kids and more.” What the Award Means to Them: “This award makes me feel like our store is legitimate. For many years, I felt like I was trying to hold my house of cards together with duct tape and bubble gum. I was so focused on the future and what we were going to do next that I forgot to take a moment and realize that we are still here. We came out of a worldwide pandemic intact. This award helped me realize that what we are doing is special and important. We all feel it in the store and our community, but it is amazing that the running industry sees us. We’re just one little store in the middle of the country, trying to make a difference. Yak says that being voted one of the top running stores in the nation means we are a positive force to help and support our customers, community, and our sport.”

RUSH RUNNING COMPANY

History: Both Mike and Alison Rush ran for the University of Arkansas and in 2008 they decided to open a shop that could serve their community. Their love of running goes so deep that they named their two boys Miles and Trail. The business supports more than 50 charity races every year, including the Chile Pepper Festival.

In Their Words: “Selling shoes is a very small part of what Rush Running does. Training, coaching, advising and motivating anyone in the surrounding community to run is what keeps a smile on our face. We’re genuinely excited to hear how your

first 5K went when we see you at the track for Monday night speed work. We’re also fist bumping you at the finish line of your first ultramarathon. This shop has consistently made running accessible to everyone in Northwest Arkansas and serves as its center of running culture.”

What the Award Means to Them: “I take pride knowing that I can be a part of a store that does so much for the community I live in. It’s amazing what Mike and Allie have done here in Northwest Arkansas and it makes me happy to see them get this award year after year.”

SALT LAKE RUNNING COMPANY

We have also done mural runs to see and support new murals going up in the South Salt Lake area. Since then, the shop has grown to be a staple in town and the go-to place for everything running.

In Their Words: “We really are a thriving community based around a running store. There are so many events, seminars

and workouts that people can attend. People come by the store just to hang out. Also, despite challenges hiring, we are blessed with a great and ambitious staff that really loves what they do. Everyone believes we’re making our corner of the world healthier.”

TERRA RUNNING COMPANY

The store hosts a free weekly group run, the Terra Trot, and works with more than 30 local nonprofits and other organizations to help time and manage their events using Chronotrack timing equipment. The store puts on the Cleveland Half Marathon & 5K, the Cleveland Thanksgiving Day 5K, and the Summer Sizzler Race Series. Katz and Skinner host the weekly Facebook/ YouTube show called Terra Girls, as well as a podcast by the same name. In 2022, Katz won the Cleveland Small Business Person of the Year Award.

In Their Words: “With just one door, Terra Running Company has made a huge impact on our community. We are located in our historic downtown and have made downtown Cleveland a destination for starting and ending your run. Our store is connected to Cleveland Coffee & Market, a coffee shop and local gift shop in the same historic downtown building and under the same ownership as Terra Running Company. The coffee shop/running store combo makes a ‘specialty’ store like ours more accessible and approachable. We host combined events, have free lockers in the coffee shop for runners to leave their

It remained a single-store operation until 2008, when the downtown location opened, and five additional stores were added in 2012-2014. The business remained entirely brick-and-mortar until March 2020, and worked diligently to roll out its e-commerce store while the physical stores were closed at the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

In Their Words: “The store is unique in that when I opened Xtra Mile Running, I was an industry outsider. I worked closely with the local running community, but had a background mostly in Education Management. As a result, we do many things a little differently here (and have learned a few things the hard way, too).”

What the Award Means to Them: “To earn this recognition for three consecutive years has been tremendous. This year, one of our high schoolers, Leah, was shopped during a busy Saturday when we had a packet pickup going on. We were all so proud of her having the composure to achieve excellence in her service. It’s also a point of pride for the staff that we maintain a strong culture where even on a busy day, we live and breathe the mission and we don’t stop until we know the customer is fully satisfied.”
