WELCOME

Dear Running Industry,

I

always struggle to begin these letters, because I get stuck on how to address our readers. “Industry” doesn’t feel right. It may be the correct term, but it doesn’t speak to the support, compassion, warmth and peer-sharing this group has given each other the past two years. You’re a community — a strong, resilient and inspiring one at that. The following pages will give you a look into how we are finally bringing this vibrant community together again.

Christina Henderson Executive Director

Consumers are expecting more from you — and you should expect more from us. We understand that your time is incredibly valuable, so we have made updates and enhancements that elevate your experience at The Running Event. These new offerings ensure you will leave with renewed energy and optimism — as a more knowledgeable businessperson with a wider industry support system. Now it its fifteenth year, The Running Event 2021 will be a three-day event. The first is a full day of education with more offerings than ever before, including morning workshops, thoughtprovoking panels and peer networking. The second and third are full days of trade show activities, with 200-plus leading brands onsite and ready to connect, do business and lead engaging presentations in the TRE Training Camp theaters. We understand that much of the value of The Running Event is time spent with peers and we have created new spaces and opportunities to facilitate that time together. • On the trade show floor – for the first time – you will find networking pods. These private, open-air meeting places offer comfortable seating so you can meet and connect with other TRE attendees. You’ll be able to schedule meeting times in advance and on-site. • Our new peer mentor/mentee program connects interested attendees with returning TRE champions. This program not only helps new attendees make the most out of their time onsite, but will also facilitate new connections and relationships within the running industry. • Our year-over-year favorites – The Indie 5K, Opening Night Reception, and Best Running Stores Awards – have been updated and enhanced so that they are more engaging, inclusive and fun than ever. • Finally, new activations by our partners – the RIDC, empowerun, Karnan Associates and numerous other brands – should not be missed. We develop the program and activities that bring people together at TRE, but you ultimately make the event what it is. It’s your willingness to come together – sharing ideas, building new relationships and working together – that will strengthen and benefit the communities you serve and the running industry as a whole for years to come. For that, we thank you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions as you’re making plans. I truly can’t wait to see you on November 30. Sincerely, Christina

ALL SECURE STANDARDS

As we return to live events, The Running Event organizer, Diversified Communications, is committed to the health and safety of its customers, partners, speakers and staff. With the guidance of event industry associations UFI, AEO and SISO, Diversified Communications has adapted the All Secure Standards. In addition to this set of best practices, The Running Event 2021 will follow the evolving recommendations from public health officials, federal, state and local authorities and the Austin Convention Center. It is our goal to create spaces where businesses and people can connect, learn, and grow. We believe these comprehensive standards will allow us to do so safely and securely.

Physical Distancing Physical contact restriction

Participants should avoid physical contact including handshakes, hugs, and limit the distribution and exchange of printed materials and booth swag.

Contactless registration

Pre-registration is encouraged for all participants. In addition, we will provide alternative options for safe onsite registration and check in.

Social distancing

Our venues will provide a recommendation for density on the expo hall floor. Participants should take note of signage regarding traffic flow, entrances, and exits. Meetings and conference rooms will also ensure seating is spaced according to local distancing regulations.

Cleaning & Hygiene

Protect & Detect Masks

In compliance with the City of Austin’s mask mandate ordinance, TRE participants must wear a CDC approved face mask covering their nose and mouth onsite. Diversified Communications will provide approved masks for those that do not comply or are without.

First aid

All events will have a designated first aid team and isolation area.

Staff training

All Diversified Communications staff will be trained on our Incident Response Plan.

Communication

Enhanced cleaning

Pre-event communication

Hand sanitation

Contact tracing

Our team will work closely with the venue to ensure continuous sanitization of our event spaces, including restrooms, door handles, food service areas, conference room tables, AV equipment, and common areas. Exhibitors will be encouraged to frequently disinfect their booths.

Hand sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the event space, along with signage to promote their use.

Diversified Communications will provide a series of email communications to all participants with detailed information about what to expect at the event. Participants are encouraged to provide their mobile number during registration and to download the mobile app.

Should it become necessary, we will work with local authorities who will trace and contact participants, subject to local privacy guidelines.

Food and beverage

We will work with our venues to enhance food safety and reduce the amount of self-serve buffet style food functions, replacing with boxed or wrapped individual meals when available.

Celebrating a specialty retail store employee who brings a glass-half-full approach to their job every day.

Recognizing a retailer who inspires kids to run their world through community-based youth running programs.

This individual always has a positive attitude, dedicated work ethic, and is a total team player—going the extra mile to help both customers and fellow staff. A cheerleader for their store and its culture, this individual inspires an active lifestyle and personifies what Run Happy means.

At Saucony, a good day is when we get to run; a great day is when we inspire others to run. And now, more than ever, that must include our kids. The winner will receive a donation to help introduce even more children to the power of running, creating a happier, healthier future for the local community.

MILES OF COMFORT AWARD Sponsored by:

TRE CHAMP RECOMMENDS Lace up your sneakers and squeeze in a run at these local trails. • Lady Bird Lake Trail at Lady Bird Lake • Shoal Creek Greenbelt Trail at 2600 N Lamar Blvd • The Greenbelt (starting at Zilker Park) on 2207 Lou Neff Road • Mount Bonnell at 3800 Mount Bonnell Road

I love to go for rides that take me up Scenic Drive to Mt. Bonnell. This offers incredible views of downtown Austin, the Colorado River and into the hills of west Austin. From the hotel, it’s about a 14 mile run if someone is looking to get in a solid run! Paul Perrone Implus LLC

TRE CHAMP RECOMMENDS Austin is a very active outdoor community so it is easy to be energized running around Town Lake. The dirt trail is also a little more forgiving than the concrete, which is a real plus, and you can count on plenty of other runners to keep you motivated. To get more off road, check out the Violet Crown Trail at Zilker Park Trail Head. It’s a portal for about a 30-mile trail through forested parkland & neighborhoods. Another nice spot with scenic waterfalls and wildlife is the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail off Capital of Texas Hwy.

My three favorite things are stopping at the Iron Cactus the first evening I arrive and having a nice cold bottle of Shiner on the deck. Second is frequent trips to Blenders and Bowls before hitting the Expo.
