A Note From Christina
Welcome to
The Running Event 2023 Dear Running Community, It’s that time of year again! The temperature is dropping, we’re trading in our tank tops for long-sleeves, and the world is awash with all things pumpkin. This can only mean one thing: It’s The Running Event season! Throughout the year, you’ve poured your heart and soul into your communities and customers, and in case you haven’t been told lately, you’re doing an incredible job. Running stores are so much more than a business— they’re the heartbeat of the communities they serve. Over the last nine years, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing this industry’s remarkable journey and growth. We’ve celebrated victories together, faced our share of challenges, leaned on each other for support, and continued to learn from it all. And as I look at run specialty today, I see more opportunity than ever before. In a world that’s constantly evolving, it’s crucial we hold on to what makes this industry exceptional. We’re not merely a collection of businesses; we’re a community, bound together by a shared passion for movement, our teams, and the communities we serve. Run specialty will never stop changing, will never stop experiencing its ups and downs—and as a community, it’s more important than ever we don’t lose sight of what unites us. Let’s embrace innovation and strive for growth while

preserving the values that define us. Collaboration, support, and a spirit of camaraderie are our greatest assets: Let’s nurture these qualities and build a future we can be proud of for our industry and the humans it serves. Each year, we shape The Running Event to be a place for learning, making connections, and finding inspiration. We’ve crafted education, opportunities, and moments that will leave you better equipped to serve your customers, your team, and your business. During your time in Austin, we encourage you to invest in industry relationships, absorb the insights and advice you hear, and leave with renewed energy. As you flip through these pages, you’ll see we’ve built The Running Event 2023 with intention. As the industry—and opportunity within it—grows, we want to preserve the intimacy and community-feel TRE is known for. You’ll find more space for genuine connection and learning. You’ll grow and elevate your business. You’ll get inspired by just about everyone you meet. Together, let’s make The Running Event 2023 an unforgettable experience where we strengthen the bonds that make our industry so special. With gratitude, Christina

What to Expect
What to Expect at #TRE23 When it comes to TRE, our mission doesn’t change. Our goal is to provide the most valuable education and business opportunities possible. Each year, though, we aim to be a space that pushes for—and creates—industry growth. The content and initiatives we have planned for 2023 are built to do just that, while also delivering unmatched opportunities for run and outdoor specialty retailers, brands, and media.” – Christina Henderson, Event Director, TRE
Learning & Connection for All The 2023 educational program will again provide meaningful learnings for run and outdoor specialty professionals. Featuring impactful content addressing the industry’s current challenges, trends, and needs, there’s something for every role and experience level. And as always, there will be endless opportunity for connection. We know how important it is for this community to come together, get inspired, and learn from each other— and we can’t wait for you to experience the 2023 event.
Environmental Impact With the guidance of the Low Impact Alliance, TRE’s Environmental Impact Partner, the 2023 event is taking more steps than ever to limit waste. As we continue implementing ways to minimize our impact and be more sustainable, we invite you—our exhibitors, retailers, and everyone else—to join us in this work and consider how you can be more environmentally conscious not only at TRE, but within your business, too.
Visit page 68 to learn more about TRE’s 2023 environmental initiatives.
The Largest Exhibit Hall Ever The 2023 exhibit hall will be the largest in show history, featuring nearly 300 run and outdoor specialty brands. Back for Year Two, Switchback at TRE doubled in size and will feature more than 40 exhibitors. Expect to find the latest in footwear, apparel, accessories, nutrition, technology, and so much more while meeting with existing vendors and connecting with new-to-you brands. Exhibit hall doors open at 9:00 AM Wednesday, November 29: Will we see you there?
Change Inspired by our Partners TRE’s partner organizations are crucial to the success of the event and include a range of organizations who are creating meaningful change in specialty retail and beyond. The Running Industry Diversity Coalition, Low Impact Alliance, &Mother, The Conservation Alliance, Queer Running Society, and more are driving the industry forward while bringing critical expertise and perspective to TRE. New partnerships with the National Shoe Retailers Association and the Pedorthic Footcare Association are widening TRE’s doors to welcome independent and comfort shoe retailers into the mix, creating an even more valuable experience for all.
Visit page 76 to meet all 2023 partners!

Melissa Gonzalez Running Through Today’s Retail Landscape Run specialty stores are a unique part of the retail landscape. Despite a quicklychanging market and constant evolutions to how consumers shop and make purchasing decisions, run specialty stores have survived—and even flourished— over the last decade.
12:00 PM 1:00 PM
Here’s why: 1. High level of customer service with staff who offer deep product knowledge and expertise. 2. Community connections. These stores sponsor races, give back to local organizations, and are very much a pillar of their communities. 3. Running stores tend to be managed by passionate individuals whose top priority is serving the customer. Run specialty stores excel at creating powerful and memorable experiences, which often results in return customers. But once that customer is acquired, retaining them can be a challenge. So, let’s explore what large retailers are doing to retain customers: • What are the big stores doing with loyalty programs and database marketing that smaller stores can adapt? • Target and Amazon are major players in the health and fitness space. What are they doing that smaller stores need to be aware of? What are some of the key trends that will occur in retail in the next five years? • Beauty brands excel at retail-brand partnerships. When you walk into Macy’s or Saks, the folks behind the counters are usually trained and paid for by the cosmetics brands. What are some of the best partnerships between beauty brands and retailers that run stores can learn from?
Continually pushing the boundaries of experiential retail, Melissa Gonzalez is an award-winning innovator and storyteller. As Principal at MG2 and Founder of The Lionesque Group, an MG2 Studio, she is pioneering the integration of physical environments and digital retail to help brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Waterford, Ever/Body, Nordstrom, and Burrow foster consumer engagement and evolve their offering. A passionate mentor and strategist, Melissa works hand-in-hand with clients to understand their greatest aspirations. She leads creative teams and delivers authentic design solutions from concept to completion, helping clients achieve their ultimate vision. An innovator at heart, she is consistently recognized as one of the leading ‘Women In Design,’ ‘10 New York City executives to watch in 2023,’ and ‘Top 10 Retail Design Influencers of the Year.’ When she’s not dreaming up innovative retail spaces, Melissa can be found seeking in unexpected places (like skydiving 10,000 feet above ground).

Exhibit Hall
Opening Day
Training Camp Theater
Scan the QR code for the full Training Camp Theater schedule.
Back again, the Training Camp Theater is an open, engaging space in the exhibit hall built to inspire, offer additional education, and bring people together. Hear (free) presentations and panels from a host of industry influencers, brands, and other leaders throughout each day the exhibit hall is open. Below, check out three Day One sessions:
In Conversation: The Power of Community
We are all constantly hearing about the importance of building community – as individuals and as businesses, too. What we miss out on is the “how.” This session will include a candid conversation on how we can all show up to drive participation, inclusion, and ultimately, success in the running industry. Panelists will discuss the unmet needs of underrepresented groups in our industry and how we can all show up as allies to make an impact and drive change. Harry Chandler Co-Owner, Charlotte Running Company; Board Member, Running Industry Association (RIA) Rocío Villalobos Co-Founder, Native Roots ATX Running & Wellness Crew
Fostering the Next Generation of Trail Runners: Growing Future Support A panel of running camp leaders, race directors, and store owners will address their efforts to introduce and promote trail running to future audiences who will help the sport flourish for years to come. Adam Chase President, American Trail Running Association
Spotlight Detroit: Building Connection Through Community
It’s Bigger Than Running. Cara Cross from Gazelle Sports will sit down with WeRun313 Founders Lance Woods and Joe Robinson in a panel discussion moderated by ASICS to talk through how one running club fosters community, connection, inclusivity and empowerment for its members. Connect. Run. Build. Three simple words have guided Woods and Robinson to champion running through the streets of Detroit and ultimately connect with some of the industry’s biggest brands and the important role partnership with their local Run Specialty store has played (and continues to play) in their journey.
Monica Morant Regional Sales Director, West Coast, On
Lance Woods Co-Founder, WeRun313, LLC
Conversation moderated by: Kiera Smalls Executive Director, Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC)
Joe Robinson Co-Founder, WeRun313, LLC

46 THE RUNNING EVENT • AUSTIN, TEXAS 2023
Presented by Mikah Meyer, Founder, Outside Safe Space Did you know it wasn’t until 2018 that the Outdoor Recreation Industry in America included an openly gay man in an ad? Did you know that the first endemic running brand to create a Pride product didn’t do so until 2019? Does the fact that LGBTQ+ consumers in America have $1 trillion in purchasing power make marketing to them sound like a big, untapped opportunity for the running industry? If so, join this Lunch & Learn where you will be taken on a journey through the benefits of LGBTQ+ marketing, and also a trek through all 400+ U.S. National Park Service sites.

How to Use Strava to Grow Your Community AND Your Bottom Line
Leave No Trace will lead a meaningful panel discussion around what it means to partner with non-profits, why these partnerships are integral to the brand and non-profit, and how your company can start the path towards these partnerships.
As the old saying goes, “if it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen!” But harnessing Strava’s highly engaged community and turning them into real, in-store customers or event participants can feel daunting. In this hands-on session, we’ll facilitate a discussion with industry leaders who have built powerful communities on Strava—and most importantly, turned them into real life customers. We’ll also demo new product features and answer those burning Strava questions from the audience.

Industry Awards Dinner
2023
I N D U ST RY A
WA R D S D I N N E R
The 2023 Industry Awards Dinner will celebrate and recognize the leaders and pioneers who are changing and evolving the run specialty industry for the better. Expect to hear from more voices in the room while celebrating the individuals, achievements, and progress made throughout the industry over the last year. The evening will kick off with special awards given by leading brands, as follows:
Run Happy Rising Star Award Presented by: Brooks is recognizing individuals who are shaping the future of run specialty. This award celebrates those within the specialty retail channel who are moving the industry forward. They are disrupting how we have always done things and are daring to say, “How can we be better?”
Run For Good Award Presented by: This award recognizes a retailer who gives kids a running start towards a lifetime of good health through community-based youth running programs. At Saucony, we exist to inspire and enable people to live a better life through running culture, selfexpression and their impact on the world. And now, more than ever, that must include our kids. The winner will receive a donation to help introduce even more children to the power of running, creating a happier, healthier future for the local community.
The Ubuntu Award
The Impact Award
Presented by:
Presented by:
Since the inception of The Running Event, Balega has annually presented the Ubuntu Award to recognize a running specialty store for excelling in service and involvement in their local community. The culture of Balega draws its inspiration from the humanistic philosophy of Ubuntu, which focuses on people’s allegiance and relationship to one another. It is the relationship to our communities that resonates with store owners every day in their hometowns— changing lives and helping to improve the lives of those living in our communities.
Working to make a positive impact is not a oneand-done thing. It’s a journey. One that requires teamwork, commitment and accountability. It demands traveling unexplored paths and blazing new trails and thinking outside the box. And most importantly, it will require a brilliant spirit of collaboration. The On Impact Award will be given to the retail partner making significant strides towards transforming run into a more sustainable, diverse, equitable and inclusive community.
*There is an additional cost to attend this dinner, applied during the registration process. Dinner and drinks will be provided.

SAVE FOR WHEN IN NEED
HOW TO SURVIVE -I N T H E W I L D a layer of insulation. If this feels like too much work, at least crawl up under a tree or hide inside some bushes.
01. FIND DRINKING WATER —
The very first thing that you’ll need in order to survive in the wild is water. That you can drink. Look for signs of fresh water nearby areas of green foliage. Healthy looking leaves, plants and trees indicates that water is nearby. Also search at low-lying areas where water could be collected, and signs of wildlife like animal tracks. It could mean that a creek, stream or pond is nearby. But if the tracks belong to a bear, a pack of wolves or any other predator, please search elsewhere.
02. BUILD A SHELTER —
Search for a dry, flat area between 2 trees, with splits in their trunks. If possible, the 2 trees should have a split in their trunks about 1–1.5 m (3–4 feet) off the ground and be about 3 m (10 feet) apart from each other. Then find a branch 3 m long (10 feet). This will be your support beam, so look for a sturdy branch. Insert the branch where the tree splits. Then, gather a bunch of branches that are long enough to be propped up against the main branch of your shelter. And finally, lay twigs and leaves of the branches to form
03. FIND FOOD
05. DO NOT GET KILLED BY ANIMALS —
—
This is no time to be a picky eater. Flip over logs to search for insects that you can eat. They are packed with protein and fats that will help you survive. Check under rotting logs for ants, termites, beetles and grubs. And keep an eye out for worms in the dirt. Yummy! You can eat most insects raw, but you might want to cook spiders.
04. START A FIRE —
Find small, dry material to use as tinder. Look for dry grass, leaves, tree bars, pine needles or any other small flammable materials you can find. You need material that is easy to light and will produce a large flame so you can start your fire. If cavemen could do this, so can you!
XPLOR MADE TO GO FAR
Yes, animals are our friends. But some aren’t. Like bears. If you run into a bear, keep cool and remember the bear is unlikely to attack. But if it does, direct punches and kicks at the bears face might help. And use any weapons like rocks or branches. But if the bear is a grizzly or a brown bear, play dead. And you might survive.
06. GET OUT OF THE WOODS —
Don’t panic if you get lost in the woods. Panicking can cause you to make poor decisions and affect your judgement. If you’re going to get out of the woods, you need to have a clear head. Take deep breaths and focus on the tasks at
hand.
