This August bank holiday weekend, The Caledonian Club is presenting the exhibition A Taste of Argyll & the Isles. Dr John Lowrie Morrison OBE, known as Jolomo, is one of Scotland’s leading contemporary landscape painters, and is renowned for his work. Prior to 1996, he painted in gouache (opaque watercolours), but since 1997 has painted almost exclusively in oils, which are more suited to the style he has developed. He applies the pigment “wet-on-wet”, using no medium, mixing them to produce the precise colour he requires. His palette, now a mound of dried pigment, is a major feature of his studio. This exhibition will transport visitors to its namesake locations – what better way to escape the hustle and bustle of London? LOYALTY MATTERS Andrew Smith has been with law firm Child & Child for more than four decades. He tells the Journal about how the landscape of Belgravia has changed and how he wouldn’t have chosen to do anything else francesca lee-rogers

ot many people can say they have worked for the same company for 40 years. Yet Andrew Smith is one of them and, after all this time, he clearly hasn’t lost his sense of humour. “I say it’s because no one else will have me!” he laughs. After seeing an advertisement in a newspaper for an ‘allrounder’ solicitor for Child & Child, Andrew applied for the job and has never looked back. Enjoying a varied and fruitful career, since 1987, he has specialised in litigation, focusing heavily on property-related litigation, principally party walls and rights of light, easements and construction disputes relating to commercial and residential properties. Andrew joined the firm when its premises were at 13 Motcomb Street, and he remembers how different it was then to how it is now: “The street was two-way and largely dominated by art galleries, and now only

one remains [Osborne Studio Gallery]. There was Christopher Hull, Michael Parkin and two or three others as well. “That period was particularly interesting because I acted for some of these art galleries, which gave rise to some interesting cases, including my first Court of Appeal case relating to a supposedly inauthentic picture by a German expressionist.”

“The practice of law is genuinely interesting and makes a huge difference to lives” Andrew details how the area has changed vastly over the years. “The character of Belgravia is very different now to how it was then. At that time, it was made up of typical English upper-crust types and a few Americans, many of whom lived

in Eaton Square in accommodation that by modern standards isn’t very modern at all. Over the years, it has become increasingly international: the old English guard have moved out and foreign investment money has moved in.” Not only has the locale evolved, but so has the field of law – indeed quite drastically. When Andrew first started his career, he was a general law practitioner – a role that is almost extinct nowadays. “The way law as practised by solicitors then was very different,” he states. “Now, young solicitors have to specialise from the day they qualify, if not before, as law has become so complex.” When I question Andrew if, after 40 years, he has ever considered pursuing a different career path or pastures new, he genuinely couldn’t be more affirming about his job. “The practice of law is

genuinely interesting and makes a huge difference to the outcome and to the lives of those involved, and, to that end, it is very rewarding.” But what does Andrew do outside of work, I ask? As well as being vice chairman for the Knightsbridge Business Group, a perk of which means he’s a regular at the likes of Mosimann’s, The Berkeley, The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and The Lanesborough, to name but a few, he is also a member of the Caledonian Club and the Chelsea Arts Club, where he often stops by after work for a pint of London Pride. “I have walked to and from work wherever I have lived since 1981,” he says, quite impressively. It seems that loyalty and routine pay dividends; Child & Child have found a real gem in Andrew. Pints of London Pride all round, we say. It was the first of a programme of evenings in which Richard Vines, Bloomberg’s chief critic, hosted a live questionand-answer session. east meets west Dinings has opened in SW3, meaning locals no longer need to travel to Marylebone to sample the cuisine of this fine Japanese eatery francesca lee-rogers

t has been more than a decade since Japanese restaurant Dinings opened in the foodie hub that is Marylebone and, luckily for Belgravia residents, its latest addition has been open in Knightsbridge since May. Occupying the former premises that was Toto’s, it has already received much local acclaim, as I discover. “Have you seen this restaurant?” a resident exclaims to his wife, after clearly stopping in his tracks. “We need to try it!” he declares. Located in Lennox Garden Mews, off Walton Street, the David d’Almada’s Sagradadesigned interior is a calm sanctuary away from the hubbub of activity outside. Inside, I’m given the option of dining in the main restaurant, at the sushi bar or al fresco in the courtyard. It’s at this point that I want to play musical chairs so I can judge the atmosphere from each accordingly, but I finally decide on the latter, given that it’s a hot summer’s day. During such rare sunny climes, it can be somewhat tricky to muster up much of an appetite, but Dinings offers the perfect anecdote 16

in the form of its Japanese tapas-style dishes. So much so in fact, it’s hard to choose which dishes to order, so I’m happy that the waiter is able to guide me with his recommendations. The nibbles are a welcome appetiser. Opting for Scottish salmon with chilli miso, yellowtail with jalapeño mayonnaise, Japanese

Wagyu beef with chilli miso and the Cornish crab with jalapeño mayonnaise, all encompassed in a taco bite-sized shell, the fish is succulent, the meat melts in the mouth and they leave us wanting more. Next up is a chef ’s selection that includes scallops and lobster that has been skilfully placed like a mini art installation and sits atop a bed of ice. Hot tapas including Wagyu beef that we cook robata-style follows; it epitomises the heart of convivial dining. It is also paired perfectly with a Pinot Noir. A chef ’s

selection of sushi almost manages to onset a foodinduced coma, while the dessert of a trio of crème brûlée, chocolate torte and Japanese biscuits finally defeats us. If you’re looking for a long leisurely lunch or dinner, and if like me, you’re a grazer, Dinings will delight with its izakaya-style dishes. THE PAST The Journal joins a guided blue plaque walk around Belgravia to uncover the former homes and the secrets of some of the area’s great historical figures

n Belgravia, a wealth of fascinating history is right in front of your eyes – if you know where to look. The area is synonymous with beautifully manicured streets, reams of stucco properties and supercars. It’s also home to a number of blue plaques, which commemorate the former home of a person of note. Now run by English Heritage, the initiative started in 1866 and features over 900 plaques on houses across the capital, linking notable historical figures with the buildings they once lived or worked in. I’ve joined an English Heritage guided tour of the blue plaques in Belgravia (which is open only to English Heritage members, not the general public) led by historian Dr Susan Skedd to discover where the great and the good of Belgravia once dwelled and to hear their fascinating stories. One of the first plaques we come to, at 34 Belgrave Square, proves to be my favourite of the 20

tour. It indicates the home to Field Marshal Viscount Gort (to give him his marvellous full name and title, Field Marshal John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort) who fought in both World Wars and commanded the British Expeditionary Force to 1940. The Dunkirk evacuation has a place in the annals of military history as one of the greatest fighting retreats and Gort played an integral part, disregarding orders from Churchill and falling back to the beaches after the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and Allied Forces were surrounded and cut off by the rapid German advance during the Battle of France. His decision saved almost 340,000 men from certain death or imprisonment and prevented a defeat that would have been inevitable with the bulk of the British forces gone. Poignantly, the building is now owned by the German embassy and the plaque was unveiled in 2005 by the greatnephew of the notorious Red

Baron, the most feared fighter pilot on the German side during World War I, alongside Gort’s grandson Viscount De L’Isle. Thomas Cubitt, the master builder appointed by Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster, to develop Belgravia in the 1820s alongside the

[LOCAL INTEREST] of Nations, from 1922 until his death in 1958. His secretary Philip Noel-Baker, the Olympic sportsman and campaigner for peace and disarmament, also lived at the address to 1982. Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, inherited 86 Eaton Square – the square has six official blue plaques in total – in 1905 and lived there until 1939. Halifax, who was Foreign Secretary to 1940, lived opposite to the then Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who resided at number 37. The blue plaques also seek to celebrate those who made outstanding contributions to the creative arts, and, to that end, plaques for writers are very much in evidence. 24 Chester Square is the former abode of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. The plaque is high above our heads and you’d miss it if you didn’t know it was there. Shelley lived here from 1846 until her death in 1851, so her son Percy could launch his political career. Plagued by illness, she found the home not to her liking: “The very thought of that place makes me ill. If Chester Square were burned down, I believe I should get well.” Matthew Arnold, the poet and critic lived at 2 Chester Square with his wife to 1868. Ian Fleming found lodgings at 22b Ebury Street to 1941 in his formative years, before embarking on his James Bond novels. Musicians and composers are also prevalent when it comes to blue plaques. Sir William Walton resided sporadically at 8 Lowndes

Place and also let the house out to a friend of his: one Laurence Olivier. Felix Mendelssohn stayed five times at 4 Hobart Place, the home of his friend and diplomat Karl Klingemann. One of the most notable plaques can be found at 180 Ebury Street, commemorating Mozart, who stayed at the house during one of his and his sister’s international tours as child prodigies. His father Leopold, suffering from serious illness, chose the house as a place of country convalescence, as back in the 1720s, the area was still predominantly marshy farmland. Mozart spent only three weeks here, but they were significant ones. Prevented from playing instruments and disturbing his dangerously ill father, the then eight-year-old responded by composing his first symphony. Susan, explains that the plaque is brown not blue, because when it was erected in 1939, different manufacturers were being used and blue plaques were proving expensive. The plaque next door, at 182 Ebury Street, which is the final one of the tour, marks the former home of the writers Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West, and is also brown to complement Mozart’s. It was unveiled by the couple’s son Nigel Nicolson, who was born there in 1917.

architect Thomas Cundy, lived at 3 Lyall Street, one of the streets he laid out. He continued to develop Belgravia for a further 20 years, masterminding many of the streets and residences of other blue plaque figures, including 16 Eaton Place, home to the great reformer William Ewart between 1830 and 1838. A number of plaques are devoted to some of the great political figures of the 19th and 20th centuries, with Belgravia very much a residential hub for those invested in a political career. Lord John Russell, who served twice as Prime Minister, lived at 37 Chesham Place from 1841-70. 16 South Eaton Place was home to Lord Robert Cecil, one of the creators of the League

aying you’re going on a ‘babymoon’ is quite divisive. Pregnant friends respond enthusiastically, sharing details of their own pre-baby breaks. Others wrinkle their noses at this modern portmanteau – “is that like a honeymoon..?” At 24 weeks pregnant and ever heavier, let me assure you that a weekend by the sea, when all that’s on the cards is to sleep, eat, have a treatment and repeat, sounds like heaven – whether you call it a babymoon or not. Husbands/partners, you’ll get serious brownie points if you treat your other half, pregnant or otherwise, to a break like this.

We wake bright and early to atmospheric stormy skies and call for tea to drink in bed After an early start to make the most of our stay, my husband dutifully drives the 260-odd miles from London and, when we arrive, confronted by the theatrically wild sight of tempestuous seas and churning clouds, we know the journey was worth it. The views at The Scarlet Hotel provide an ever24

changing backdrop: the 37 bedrooms all have a sea view – and a balcony or terrace – and so do the communal spaces across the five levels (except the tucked-away treatment rooms and meditation spaces). Light floods the hotel and the design concept is best summed up as elementally vibrant – natural tones and materials, which complement the landscape outside, are livened up with splashes of colour, be it via furniture, bright paintings or eclectic artwork. Our room, Just Right (the most affordable), is nicer than its categorisation implies, with the requisite comfy bed and large bath, as well as easy-to-use lighting (not always to be expected in luxury hotels, surprisingly).

A pregnancy pillow is a lovely touch, as are slippers with a note that says, ‘Please take me home, I am made from recycled plastic bottles.’ We order tea to our room – a pot of tea whenever and wherever you want is complimentary – before I shuffle to the spa for an indulgent afternoon. The Scarlet’s Pregnancy Journey has been created with skincare expert Pai. Its products are certified organic and free from synthetics, irritants and essentials oils, so they’re suitable for even the most sensitive skin and throughout all three trimesters. My therapist, Natasha, takes me through an Ayurvedic consultation – my dosha (body type) is currently pitta, although it can change when you’re pregnant – and administers a full body scrub.

I’m warm and comfortable on my side – invigorating dry brush strokes are balanced by gentle stroking and, after a shower, my skin feels super-smooth. I spend half an hour in the relaxation room by the indoor pool, gazing out over the outdoor, reedfiltered pool, and refuel on fresh fruit. I watch couples venturing outside when their name is called to fling off robes and climb into a clifftop hot tub – they’re popular, so make sure you book in advance. Next is a blissful bespoke massage – be specific about what you do and don’t like, and ask your therapist to adjust the temperature as often as you need. I float past the steam and meditation rooms, past the hammam and rhassoul, feeling lighter than I

have done in weeks, before heading back to our room for a doze before supper. And it’s lucky we’re hungry for it – the food at The Scarlet is fantastic. Three courses are priced at a reasonable £45.50, and over two evenings, we enjoy every one we try. There’s a big focus, as you’d expect in an eco-hotel, on sustainability as well as quality; the kitchen team has relationships with many small local artisan producers, farmers and fishermen. My highlight is the beef loin with ox cheek pastille and my husband loves his lighter dish of silver mullet with potted shrimp sauce. Vegetarians are very well catered for too: both courses have three considered options and my vegetable salad is as beautifully presented as it is delicious. If you’re drinking, there are cocktails and an extensive wine list; if not, the mocktails are good. Leave room for a satisfying pudding (try the dark chocolate delice). The team is young

and friendly; flashes of turquoise hair and tattoos give a nod to the local surf scene and add personality to the service. We wind down after supper, with mint tea and pool in the Library – it ain’t rock and roll – and sleep like proverbial babies. We wake bright and early to atmospheric stormy skies and call for tea to drink in bed while watching frothy, shape-shifting clouds roll across the sky. We’re soon roused, though, by the thought of breakfasting like kings in the restaurant, with even better views of the vast, horseshoe-shaped beach. Apple juice and toast is followed by a smoothie, porridge, Bircher muesli or a chocolate croissant, then a cooked dish; you’ll be well fed, whether you opt for scrambled eggs, salmon, pancakes or the full works. After yet another time-out in one of the hanging pods by the pool (tricky to get in, but once you are, hard to drag yourself out), I ready myself for a private yoga class while my husband heads out for a run along the craggy cliffs. I get a lot out of my hour with therapist Hannah – at my request, she helps me devise a stretching and strength regime I can do at home. I end the class breathing more deeply and it’s a feeling that persists, even as we drive home a few hours later, proving just how restorative even 48 hours away from city life can be. Now, more than ever, those who are at a high risk of property fraud should take precautions. Hypothetically, anyone could be targeted for property fraud. A fraudster could obtain details of your property, and using false identification, deceive a solicitor to apply for a loan over that property or even sell it. The risk of such a fraud increases in relation to a property where the owner is absent, living abroad or elderly. There are some basic steps that can be taken to prevent a property fraud. These include: 1. Making sure the property is properly registered with the Land Registry. 2. Ensuring the Land Registry has up-to-date details for the registered proprietor. 3. Registering for property alerts from the Land Registry. 4. Placing a restriction can be placed on the title to the property.
