A whole new generation of architecture that is being built as we speak. The show takes its name from the Apple headquarters in California. How will it inspire? We are at a pivotal moment in history. It’s the dawn of the information age and this new reality is being expressed architecturally, artistically and digitally all around us. How do you create the models? destination dining Claudio Covino has brought fine Italian food to the neighbourhood, as he tells the Journal francesca lee-rogers
H
ead chef Claudio Covino is busy mingling with diners who are enjoying the fruit of his labour when I first arrive at Il Pampero, The Hari hotel’s new Italian restaurant in the heart of Belgravia. Named after Aron Harilela’s former polo horse, Pampero, the new concept of homemade Italian cooking meets contemporary dining has clearly been a welcome addition to the local area and beyond, and the restaurant that opened last month has already got a buzz about the place. Upon arrival, the vespa-green lacquers, soft leathers and heritage fabrics of the interior by Tara Bernerd are striking but the wow-factor is the impressive circular cocktail bar that takes centre stage; it’s the perfect spot for aperitivo. And this refurbishment extends into the kitchen, an aspect that Claudio is
keen to point out: “We’ve made a lot of changes to the restaurant but I’m pleased to say that it finally works and I’m already so proud.”
Sharing platters introduce the Italian concept of enjoying food and drink with family and friends to life at Il Pampero Ex Novikov and Locanda Locatelli, Claudio’s concept of fusing home cooking with a sophisticated dining experience, focuses on quality ingredients, with the majority of produce imported from Italy. “I worked for a solid two months to-ing and froing with Italian suppliers sourcing the best meat, vegetables and cheese, as well as training my
team of 15 chefs and floor staff,” he tells me. This is where Claudio’s experience clearly comes into play; although the kitchen is a hard place to work, training is a huge part of his job and he makes sure he teaches his chefs to the highest standards. These teachings and Claudio’s and his team’s commitment to cook from scratch are clearly reflected in their work; making pasta, bread, smoking and curing all take place in Il Pampero’s kitchen and the menu that includes dishes such as chestnut tagliatelle with hare ragu, pumpkin gnocchi with Taleggio cheese and black truffle and marinated wild boar casserole with honey root are imaginative and innovative and brings the heart of Italian food to Belgravia. Sharing platters introduce the Italian concept of enjoying food and drink with family and friends to life at Il Pampero.
Meanwhile, as for cooking for himself, Claudio tells me he’s “more than happy with a plate of pasta with butter or oil; making him a ‘typical Italian’,” he details. The menu is far from plain at Il Pampero however, and changes every season. But how does Claudio generate new dish ideas, I ask? “I find my inspiration everywhere,” he tells me with his Italian charm. “Wherever I am, I always carry a notepad and pen with me so that I can jot down any ideas.” It’s clear that Claudio is very much on top of his game, and judging by locals’ reactions, not only has his food received outstanding approval but so has he; general manager Andrew Conney told me he is quite the affable character, and he certainly lives up to his reputation. Come Dine with me The Journal uncovers four private dining spots in the area natalie ellen cobb

elgravia is a foodie’s utopia. The restaurant market is packed with inviting and exciting dining concepts, but when it comes to finding somewhere to dine for a special occasion, we understand that private dining options can sometimes be a little overwhelming. To assist you in planning your next celebration, we have assembled our top picks in the area to provide you with a shortlist of the Journal’s favourite private dining rooms. The Wellington Arch
Apsley Way, W1J 7JZ
This is one of the most unexplored private dining room spaces in central
London and is perched right on the edge of Belgravia. Originally built as the entrance to the royal residence of Buckingham Palace, it later became a victory arch proclaiming Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon. Upon arrival guests can gaze from beneath to see where they are about to dine and see the Angel of Peace descending on the ‘Quadriga’ – the four-horsed chariot-of war. The top of the arch provides an array of spaces varying in size to accommodate bespoke parties. For a seated dinner, the Upper Quadriga Gallery can accommodate up to 36 guests on multiple round tables but if you’d prefer all your guests on one long table 22 guests is the maximum. With views of Buckingham Palace Gardens and the iconic London
skyline, you can enjoy a special Champagne reception on the balconies and delight your guests from start to finish by using a whole host of interesting suppliers that are trained to work in the historic setting of the grand arch. Dine here to join previous hosts including the likes of David Beckham, who held a Haig Club pop-up in the space, who chose The Wellington Arch for an unforgettable Belgravian dinner party. english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/ wellington-arch Mosimann’s
11B West Halkin Street, SW1X 8JL
Prose on private dining in Belgravia wouldn’t be complete without Mosimann’s, the ever-delightful London capital of Swiss dining. With more than 25 years of culinary excellence under its belt, Mosimann’s is a real staple of Belgravia’s restaurant scene and with seven private dining rooms, there’s a lot to offer for celebrations. In a unique twist of quality, each of its rooms is sponsored by distinguished brands such as Lalique, Bentley and Montblanc, all housed within the beauty of a former Presbyterian church. The Journal recommends the Parmigiani Fleurier Room for dinner parties of up to 14
[LIFESTYLE] Boisdale of Belgravia
15 Eccleston Street, SW1W 9LX
Boisdale of Belgravia brings the Scottish fire to the locale and no one does whisky, tartan and live music better in the local area. This Scottish restaurant features the tartan identity that can be seen across its multiple restaurants and makes the ideal hang-out for drinks, jazz music and hearty food. Upon entry, the welcoming interiors of Boisdale will provide a brilliant first impression for guests invited to any dinner party as they
pass through to eat in one of the four private dining room spaces available. The Jacobite Room on the first floor is decorated with a distinctive design of deep reds and greens plus rich mahogany panelling, embellished with a dash of Macdonald tartan. This private dining room is perfect for parties with up to 22 guests and offers complete privacy while still immersing guests in the Scottish elegance that Boisdale has prided itself on since 1898. boisdale.co.uk/belgravia
30 guests. With the room’s showstopping chandelier and its respectful décor, you will be hard pushed to disagree with the lasting impression of how well this architectural space celebrates its ancestry. The natural daylight that floods in through the old church windows makes it perfect for a luncheon or dinner with friends and family. mosimann.com
Pétrus
1 Kinnerton Street, SW1X 8EA
This is the Belgravian Michelinstarred offering by Gordon Ramsay’s empire and Pétrus prides itself on exquisite attention to detail, immaculate presentation and a menu
by head chef Larry Jayasekara that delivers intense and clean favours. Pétrus’ Kitchen Table is all about the extravagant; think theatrical meets personalised and intimate service all wrapped into one to produce a standout dining experience. Its Kitchen Table offers the best of the
private dining experience but seats guests within the hubbub of the main restaurant. Only eight guests can sit at the kitchen table so choose your company wisely as you will be sitting down to a seven-course bespoke menu that will be created merely a few metres from your seats. A personal sommelier will also be there to help you choose wines that complement your menu. If you find only eight guests is a little too restrictive, take on the whole venue for a party up to 50 guests and enjoy the delights of Pétrus all to yourself! gordonramsayrestaurants.com/petrus Natalie Ellen Cobb is the founder of Private Dining London, to find out more, telephone 07584 579 332, email natalie@privatedininglondon.co.uk or visit privatedininglondon.co.uk 15

A LOYAL FOLLOWING The Journal samples Enoteca Turi, a year after it moved to the area FRANCESCA LEE-ROGERS
E
arly last year, Pimlico Road saw the arrival of a new business – Enoteca Turi. The family-run Italian restaurant certainly fits in well among the neighbouring galleries and antique shops, with both the interior and exterior exuding a sophisticated look laced with subtle Italian confidence in design. Now, a year after the restaurant moved into the area from south of the river, the Journal paid a visit to see how quickly it has won over the local clientele.
The quality of the ingredients certainly shines through The whole premise of Enoteca Turi is to showcase authentic cuisine from the diverse gamut of Italy’s regions, with each dish on the enticing menu accompanied by a note on its origins. Seasonal ingredients are sourced from the Italian regions when they are at their highest quality, while others are sourced much closer to home from artisan vendors – such as the cheese, which uses local milk that is manufactured according to traditional Italian methods. 16
On arrival, my husband and I are given a warm welcome by restaurant manager Cesare Papagna. Having opened in Putney in 1990, the restaurant developed a loyal local following before making the move over to its new home. And what is SW15’s loss is clearly Belgravia’s gain. Enoteca Turi has already made waves with Belgravians – despite being an unassuming Tuesday evening, the restaurant quickly fills with patrons (some of whom, Cesare tells us, still travel over from Putney to sample its fare); the gentle hubbub of the evening is punctuated by cries of “buona sera!” to happily greet any new diners who walk through the door.
After much deliberation of the menu that has been created by head chef Francesco Sodano, my husband and I opt for the organic beef carpaccio and red Sicilian prawns for starters. The quality of the ingredients certainly shines through – the carpaccio is delightfully tender, while the prawns are beautifully complemented by the sharpness of the fennel confit and blood orange. All the while as the food comes out and the guests come in, the bustling atmosphere is still overseen by the keen eye and beaming smile of the proud proprietor, Giuseppe Turi himself. For mains, I choose the Tuscan-inspired saddle
fillet and belly of lamb that has a variety of textures, with the soft fillet and crispy belly accompanied by chick peas and black cabbage, and expertly paired with a far-tooeasily-drinkable Chianti Classico from the same region. So much so, I order another glass. To finish, the Settevelli dessert is like the final third of Dante’s Divine Comedy, with its rich seven layers of sponge, chocolate praline and hazelnut and chocolate mousse tasting like pure heaven. And with a Dining Cellar that has more than 460 wines on offer, what’s not to love? 87 Pimlico Road, SW1W 8PH, 0207 730 3663, enotecaturi.com

ASHLEY PALMER-WATTS The head chef of Dinner by Heston grabs a moment out of the kitchen to talk Meat Fruit, culinary inspiration and how Heston is both a mentor and friend as told to: francesca lee-rogers
I first knew I wanted to be a chef when… I worked in a restaurant aged 15, and was exposed to the world of incredible food and the vision of what life as a chef could be like.
© John Blackwell

The Meat Fruit is best summed up as… a dish that epitomises Dinner. Historically inspired, the Meat Fruit seems simple in appearance, yet the technique involved to make a sphere of intensely smooth chicken liver parfait, coated in layers of mandarin gel so that it has the texture resembling a mandarin, is far from simple. The dishes at Dinner are inspired by… historic British gastronomy. We delved into the archives of Hampton Court Palace and The British Library, unearthing recipe books from as early as the 14th century, and then created a menu that takes these discoveries and turns them into an evolving 21st century dining experience. What I like most about my job is… working with a group of extremely talented, driven people with a strong shared ethos. My relationship with Heston is… very unique – he’s a mixture of my
mentor, friend, inspiration, and we’re a family. The best piece of advice I received was… to always remember to taste. It sounds strange to say, but as a young cook this is often overlooked. While I worked at The Fat Duck I learnt… that as a chef you will never stop learning. This year I want to… make more time to eat out in London and explore the fantastic and constantly evolving food scene that’s going on at the moment. It’s changing at such a rate,

with so many incredible restaurants opening all the time and I’d love to spend more time discovering new places. This Easter I’m going to be… at home with my family. What I like most about Belgravia as an area is… the grand, majestic architecture – the sheer scale and grandeur of the buildings.
Outside of work I eat… simple, family dishes that focus on quality ingredients. I’m happiest when… my family life and my restaurant life are in harmony with one another, working in balance as they should. 66 Knightsbridge, SW1X 7LA, 020 7201 3833, dinnerbyheston.com 17

where time stands still The Journal reviews the latest Skeyndor facial, with glowing results Francesca Lee-Rogers
W
ith a name like Timeless Prodigy, I expect great things when I arrive at The Peak Health Club & Spa for its new Skeyndor treatment. Last month, the Journal featured its anti-ageing product range, but this issue, it’s time to put the facial to the test. Targeted as an anti-ageing treatment, spa manager Ceri Silk tells me how since launching a few months ago, it has proved popular with local residents and beyond. Starting with a massage on my neck and shoulders and hands and feet, my therapist uses a combination of Thai and Shiatsu techniques to help me unwind, get in the zone and, ultimately, relax.
The research, science and technology that has gone into the facial and the product range is outstanding; it comes as no surprise it has been 50 years in the making My skin is prepped using a Champagne jelly elixir that is oh-so decadent, along with a Dermapeel Pro Resurfacing Peel Cleansing Gel, giving my face and décolletage a double cleanse, ridding it of urban pollutants that are impossible to avoid in central London. A tone later and a glycol peel 20
is generously applied, followed by a concentrate of damask rose stem cells, the latter of which not only helps to hydrate the skin but also regenerate it to stimulate growth. This is where Skeyndor really comes into its own; the research, science and technology that has gone into the facial and
the product range is outstanding; it comes as no surprise it has been 50 years in the making. A 3D collagen mesh mask is then placed on my skin to firm and tighten, and the therapist leaves it to absorb while being super attentive with a hand and arm massage. An application of a rich
white truffle extract cream is applied and then the 90-minute treatment is complete. Upon first inspection, my visage looks plump, glowing, and most importantly, healthy. And, one week on and I’m still impressed by the results, which for me, is an excellent sign of a quality facial, and I’m also asked what my secret is: well, it’s now out in the open… The Timeless Prodigy facial costs £220 for a 90-minute treatment, Jumeirah Carlton Tower, Cadogan Place, SW1X 9PY, call 0207 858 7300 or visit peakhealthclub.com

SMOKE AND MIRRORS
The refurbishment of the cigar terraces at The Wellesley is due to start on 1 June. Lee Simmons and Make Architects are creating a new and bespoke sculptural screen for the front of the hotel, which will provide guests with an oasis to sample some of the world’s finest cigars from Europe’s largest humidor. Ken Shuttleworth, Make’s founding partner said: “With their protective panels and permeable screen, the terraces are private and transparent at once. They’re set to make a significant addition to The Wellesley as well as the Belgravia Conservation Area at large – one that reflects the natural beauty of Hyde Park and reveals the character of Knightsbridge’s architectural history.” 11 Knightsbridge, SW1X 7LY, 020 7235 3535, thewellesley.co.uk

Suite Dreams:
ARTIST RESIDENCE
If you’re looking to recreate holiday magic on home turf, head to Pimlico CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS
Y
ou heard it here first: Artist Residence is a hidden gem. A luxe boutique hotel, it has just 10 rooms. Ours, the Grand Suite, is somewhere between glamorous and eclectic: its sitting area is complete with a green sofa, parquet floor and woven rugs. The two open fireplaces stuffed with wooden logs are charming and the choice of in-room goodies, such as Joe & Seph’s popcorn and Rococo chocolates are thoughtful, but it’s the open bathroom that makes me swoon. Wallowing in the roll-top freestanding bathtub, taking full advantage of the Bramley products and snuggly white towelling robe, I dread leaving, but luckily it’s just to go downstairs for dinner. Much like the whole hotel, artwork is a standout feature at The Cambridge Kitchen: posters adorn the exposed white-brick walls and we love the neon bar sign and copper lights. Of the seasonal British menu, mains are our favourite – and seriously filling. The butternut squash risotto with burrata was divine but could have fed four, while the halibut
with pickled shallots and Champagne velouté was perfectly cooked. The accompanying broccoli was far too delicious, making me wonder – as I inhaled the bowl – just how much butter was used to cook it. We skip a tempting chocolate mousse and head downstairs, where a former Victorian pub has been turned into a speakeasy-style cocktail cellar. Red leather stools, industrial round tables and loud-but-not-tooloud music by the likes
of Oasis and The Police make this a seriously cool hangout, aided by quirky drinks named after famous movies. We opt for the Titanic (rosé, Plymouth Gin, dry vermouth blend, hibiscus, sea salt, iceberg, lemon and soda) and Kill Bill
(Aylesbury Duck Vodka, umeshu sake, ginger, lemon, barrel-aged bitters) before retiring to our four-poster bed. The bar has been set high and breakfast the next day does not disappoint: a cereal fanatic, I can confirm the Bircher muesli is one of the best I’ve had. After a quick cappuccino, we leave the cosy confines of Artist Residence for the bustling streets of London. If you need a home away from home, do check in. prohibition party
The Other Palace has a successful start thanks to its inauguration production of The Wild Party francesca lee-rogers
O
ne week on and I can’t help but still sing in my head: ‘Welcome to my party’; that’s the proof of a good musical if ever there was one. In fact, it’s hard to believe that The Wild Party was so short-lived back on Broadway, but then again that was way back in 2000. Formerly St James Theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber has chosen this musical for the launch of The Other Palace, which is now a new space for developing musicals.
The musical is set in prohibition times against a backdrop of Manhattan decadence and 1920s excess, and is a party to end all parties Directed by Drew McOnie – who last year received the 2016 Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for his work on In the Heights at King’s Cross Theatre – the musical is set in prohibition times against a backdrop of Manhattan decadence and 1920s excess, and is a party to end all parties. Centring on the character of Queenie – played by Frances Ruffelle who’s throwing the party with her partner Burrs, their relationship is 24

marked by vicious behaviour and recklessness, and in an attempt to salvage their toxic union, they decide to throw what soon becomes a messy social gathering. The performances are all high energy and as soon as there’s a slight lull, the plot thickens – the audience is once again drawn in and the debauchery continues. However, no party can last forever and the story soon turns sour in a surprising turn; and the revellers soon have to sober up and face their reality. maths style
Anya Hindmarch’s SS17 collection has its roots in the juxtaposition of art and maths, with a nod to the Fibonacci sequence that translates in style terms to patterns and the geometry of overlapping circles and angles interwoven with leather and neoprene. The colour palette of the collection ranges from delicate chalks to bolder colours including pink, blue and tangerine orange. [the art of craft]
Through the
LOOKING GLASS Glasses maker Tom Davies is known for his slick eye for design, but what of the craftsmen behind the frames? The Journal discovers the art behind the exquisite specs
A
lot can happen in 22 hours. A day can be lived, the sun can rise and fall again and, in the age of modern technology, one can catch a plane to the other side of the world in time to see it ascend once more. It is also how long it will take the master craftsmen at Tom Davies to fashion a bespoke pair of specs entirely from scratch. Founded in 2001, the eponymous Tom Davies brand was set up after its founder spotted a gap in the market for eyewear that championed both cutting-edge design and meticulous craftsmanship. Sixteen years on and Davies is renowned for his frames that boast an attention to detail unique to the industry.
The quality of the materials used to create Davies’ eyewear is a key component of the designer’s USP As half of the brand’s glasses are completely bespoke, a challenging and detailed production process is required to ensure that the needs of each wearer are met. As such, Davies necessitates that every member within his team of skilled artisans has a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the trade, in order to guarantee that each frame is made with the highest quality craftsmanship.
And it’s not just the makers who are subject to a scrupulous selection process; the quality of the materials used to create Davies’ eyewear is a key component of the designer’s USP. The Natural Horn collection, for example, is named after the product with which the frames are made, used for its gentle properties and lightweight feel. The sheets of horn are filed down to 0.8mm and laminated together for added strength, sometimes combined with silk and carbon fibre for a flash of colour. The arms of the frames are crafted from titanium, which are ion-plated to keep the metallic colour locked in and, elsewhere in the collection, pure cotton acetate is used, sourced from Japan, where Davies believes the best raw material is made.
With the materials in place, the makers craft the creative visions of Davies into wearable works of art that succeed in both form and function, ensuring that each frame is individually fitted to the wearer. It’s a demanding process – conducted entirely by hand – that takes between 16 to 22 hours, but the result is certainly worth the time and effort that is put in. As if a handmade, bespoke design wasn’t enough, each pair of Davies’ spectacles is personalised with an engraving of the wearer’s name, which is hidden inside the arms of the frame – needless to say, there is more to Tom Davies than meets the eye. goldie locks As Loquet London opens its first store, founders and friends Laura Bailey and Sheherazade Goldsmith tell the Journal about their mission to modernise classic jewellery pieces ellen millard
w
hen interviewing the founders of a jewellery brand, one would expect to hear stories of treasures passed down through generations, perhaps of a jewellery box filled with family heirlooms, and precious gifts from loved ones. I imagine that this is the sort of story Sheherazade Goldsmith – one of the two creators of bespoke jewellery label Loquet London – would have regaled me with during our chat, had she not had a rather unfortunate incident happen to her not long before.
The pair put their speedy trajectory down to a mutual respect and understanding “I recently had all of my jewellery stolen; they took everything,” she tells me. “I ended up with nothing except one ring that I bought when I sold my first book.” Fortunately, the author and environmentalist has a wealth of charms, bracelets and necklaces at her fingertips as the co-founder of Loquet London, which she launched nearly four years ago with her friend Laura Bailey. Inspired by a gift from her son and the age-old tradition of wearing lockets as treasured keepsakes, Goldsmith floated the idea of a bespoke necklace that 28
combined classic pendants with small charms during a dinner with Bailey. “It was almost a dreamlike conversation; Sheherazade had quite a clear idea of how it would be, both emotionally and in terms of engineering,” Bailey explains. “We talked about it around the table and then just carried on talking. We did a lot of research and spoke with people we trusted. From that first conversation to the launch it happened fairly quickly; it was only about six months.” The final concept centres around a small crystal pendant in which customers can place charms of their choice, from birthstones to initials, to tokens of luck or religious symbols. Each design is completely custom-made, allowing the client to become the designer. “We were very aware of a desire for bespoke, emotional gifts in a broad sense, but we wanted to apply that specifically to jewellery,” Bailey explains. “A lot of our initial conversations about the brand were about storytelling and how emotional we felt about our own jewellery.” For their necklaces, Bailey chose L and T charms symbolising her children’s names (Luc and Lola Tiger), as well as a shooting star, an emerald and a garnet, while Goldsmith opted for her children’s birthstones, a rainbow and a lily of the valley – all of which hang on a diamond chain. The lockets are available in spherical or heart-
shaped designs, and in gold, white gold, diamond or sapphire styles. The brand has expanded to include bracelets, stacking rings, earrings and, more recently, a line of locket rings, which launched last year. There are plans to expand the label further, with Bailey hinting at a potential range of stationery or holiday mementos to tie in with the founders’ love of letter writing and travelling. For now, they are busy with their first standalone shop in Belgravia, which launched in March on Motcomb Street, offering customers the chance to view the entire collection, which was previously limited to online. “We had so many requests from

clients for a store; a space came up on one of the most romantic streets in London,” Goldsmith recalls. “It really fits in with what the brand is – contemporary and fun. It was the perfect opportunity at the right time.” The space is light and airy, decorated with Germans Ermicsdesigned cabinets, Fritz Neth chairs and a Massimo Vitali beach scene. It’s ideally situated on one of Belgravia’s busiest streets, an area in which the pair feel “lucky” to be based. “It sounds funny, but it’s quite nice that it’s not on either of our doorsteps; it feels more like an excursion and a treat going there,” says Bailey. “And to be neighbours to both a church and a delicious
café [Baker & Spice] seemed extremely fortuitous, so we moved very fast – as always.” Since launching in 2013, Loquet London has rocketed from a simple idea shared around a kitchen table to a force to be reckoned with in the jewellery world, garnering a fan base that includes the likes of Alexa Chung, Brie Larson and Julia Roberts. Friends first and business partners later, the pair put their speedy trajectory down to a mutual respect and understanding. “We have very different roles even though we’re partners; Sheherazade is driving the business full-time whereas I have a multilayered working life, but
we complement and support each other both personally and professionally,” Bailey explains. The focus at the moment is on their new store and on growing the brand. “We’re continuing to develop the collection with the same enthusiasm and to keep moving forward,” says Goldsmith. “We’re still quite a young company, so there’s a lot more to come.” 22 Motcomb Street, SW1X 8LB, 020 7823 2334, loquetlondon.com 29

MAKING THE MOVE Whether a gallery is moving millions of pounds of art work or an ex-President is relocating his family home, Cadogan Tate is the first on the scene
T
ransferring your life from one home to another is an incredibly stressful ordeal, not least for all the wrapping and unwrapping, the endless cardboard boxes and the heavy lifting. This is why the large majority of us call in a professional moving company. The relatively low cost of a good quality mover is a sensible and worthwhile investment. When it comes to your valued possessions, whether sentimental or delicate collectibles, who can you trust to pack them up and transfer them to a new home, whether from Clapham to Chelsea or halfway across the world? Cadogan Tate is no stranger to the world of high-value, complex and time-sensitive moves. The company was founded in 1977 with a Luton van, an office in Covent Garden and storage facilities in Southwark. A year later it was selected by Christie’s to transfer auction lots from its warehouse to its South Kensington sale rooms – now Cadogan Tate works with all the major global auction houses.
One of the more highprofile moves was for President Barack Obama Through its relentless focus on quality and customer service, Cadogan Tate has built up an incredibly loyal customer base by offering a flexible range of services and geographical locations. The company is based in north and south London, Paris, the Côte d’Azur, New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and has more than half a million square feet of high-
security temperature-controlled warehousing. As such, Cadogan Tate provides specialised moving, storage, international shipping and insurance services to individuals, families, businesses and governments covering the entire UK, EU and USA, as well as all major worldwide destinations. Cadogan Tate has moved a 1,200-person marketing firm in central London overnight; flown replacement financial trading servers via private jet to New Jersey in the wake of Hurricane Sandy; transported a personal art collection worth more than $300 million from Geneva to Hampstead; and relocated more than 20,000 items of smoking ephemera from London to a private museum in Turkey. Nevertheless, by far the largest number of assignments the company undertakes each year is the moving and storage of thousands of private homes.
One of the more high-profile moves recently completed was for top interior designer Michael S Smith, who called to book a move in Washington on Inauguration Day. Rescheduling to a quieter time was desirable, but clearly impossible as the client in question was President Barack Obama. The instructions were simple if daunting: the move was to be completed in no more than four hours under the direction of the secret service and White House staff, and the movers were to know nothing about the property until arrival. Cadogan Tate’s moving teams are used to providing immaculate service under complex conditions, so it was no surprise that Michael S Smith’s beautiful room sets were safely installed in the departing President’s elegant new home. RESIDENTS’ CULTURE Sue Liberman brings us her monthly Belgravian musings
Belgravia in Bloom As mentioned last month, Belgravia in Bloom will take place at the same time as the Chelsea Flower Show – Monday 22 to Saturday 27 May. The theme for Belgravia in Bloom 2017 is Children’s Books. Last year saw a tremendous response from everyone and the floral displays throughout Belgravia were fabulous. This year, we’re looking to make Belgravia in Bloom bigger and better and look forward to even more people taking part. Children’s Books is a fun theme with a vast amount of possibilities. Expect to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men (Flobbadob!), Paddington Bear, plus many more fun displays, special menus, in-store events and afternoon teas. In addition, there will be “story time” for children each day (more details to follow). Belgravia in Bloom 2017 will once again include retailers, hotels, pubs, restaurants, churches, schools,
residents and gardens in Belgravia. Grosvenor will be producing a walking tour guide which will be distributed to residents and businesses in Belgravia. Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: • Best Floral Display Winner • Best Floral Display Highly Commended • Best Children’s Theme Winner
• Best Floral Display (Pubs) Winner • Best Floral Display (Pubs) Highly Commended • Best Residents’ Display • Fans’ Favourite I look forward to seeing your creations. What’s your favourite children’s book? More details will follow next month but in the meantime, for updates, please visit grosvenorlondon.com
Rococo Chocolates Have you sworn off chocolate for Lent but find yourself struggling with a daily craving? Chocolate has long been top of the list of things to give up for Lent, and now Rococo Chocolates has come up with a revolutionary idea: the Absolution bar. After buying your favourite bar, you make a donation of £1 which goes to the Lent Appeal 2017 in the Parish of St Paul’s Knightsbridge. The inspiration came following a challenge from the Rev Alan Gyle, to Chantal Coady OBE, founder and owner of Rococo Chocolates. She explained: “As a ‘good’ convent girl, I was always encouraged to give up chocolate for Lent which I found a trial. I would have loved the opportunity to pay for my indulgences [...] now I can make up for lost time!” A contemporary approach to Lent: instead of giving something up, you can now eat chocolate and do some good! And you can’t get better than that. rococochocolates.com

RENOVATIONS AT THE READY
Progress on the redevelopment of Hyde Park Barracks What has been the Household Cavalry’s home for many years, its Hyde Park barracks, is planned to be redeveloped. Estimated to cost an astonishing £2 billion, the three-and-a-half-acre military site has the potential to rival the Candy brothers’ One Hyde Park, which is just a stone’s throw away. There are currently a number of property developers interested in what would be a groundbreaking project. However, it would mean that a new home for the barracks would need to be found, which up until recently, has stalled conversations. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates in upcoming issues.

Section 237 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 has now been abolished and on 13 July 2016 was replaced with Section 203 (s203) of the Housing and Planning Act 2016. Section 237 gave local authorities authority to override rights of light (and other easements) in cases where a local authority felt there was sufficient justification. The application of s237 was a powerful device for developers, the effect of which was to prevent dominant owners from obtaining injunctive relief against developers in cases where the implementation of their development caused actionable injury to the rights of light of dominant owners. Developers will be relieved to know that the new s203 appears to preserve the previous powers of s237. There in fact seems to be little in the way of practical difference between the application of s237 and s203. When resolving to pass a s237 resolution, a local authority would generally take such action in cases where it thought it in the public interest to do so. The wording of s203 now adds a specific express provision (which did not feature in the wording of s237) that the relevant authority in question “could acquire the land compulsorily” for the purpose of the development of question, reinforcing the public interest requirement. The abolition of s237 and implementation of s203 has not affected how compensation to dominant owners is assessed in cases where a local authority has resolved to exercise its powers. Assessment of damages is still by way of diminution in value of the dominant land as a result of the actionable infringement. Diminution in value is notoriously difficult to calculate, especially given that the new development in question may well bring new prosperity to the area in question, meaning that there is arguably no diminution in value at all. 4 Grosvenor Place, SW1X 7HJ, 020 7235 8000, childandchild.co.uk

GRAND PLANS
Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has published a 20-year vision to transform its London estate

G
rosvenor Britain & Ireland has published a 20-year vision to “transform its London estate and tackle the pressures facing the capital”, starting with significantly amping up digital connectivity in Mayfair and Belgravia and taking back the management of Grosvenor Square from the Royal Parks. A realm of big ambitions aims to create a more inclusive enclave in Prime Central London “with better streets, greener spaces and more active and enterprising places that appeal to the many, not just to the few.” Inkeeping with such (surprisingly poetic) ideals, the firm wants more stakeholders to get involved: it’s calling for new partnerships between public and private sectors, and with those who live and work on the estate, to bring about change, here is Grosvenor’s seven-point 20-year vision. 1. Active neighbourhoods Mayfair and Belgravia are diverse, dynamic and adaptable neighbourhoods. They are interesting places to live in and explore, with a variety of activities taking place every day and throughout the seasons. Neighbourhoods retain their own diverse local characteristics. People of all ages, interests and incomes regularly enjoy the estate’s vibrant street life and cultural offering as well as its tranquil corners, benefiting from a wide range of amenities.
Existing buildings and spaces are used intensively but sensitively. Careful adaptation has created imaginative additional uses. Greater density in certain areas, particularly around transport hubs, meets the demands of a growing city.
Belgravia is a source of world-class architectural beauty New buildings are flexibly designed and therefore built to last. These flexible structures adapt to meet the demands of new and innovative forms of commercial, social and cultural activity. The mix of uses and people, supported by high-quality infrastructure, helps to secure Mayfair and Belgravia’s adaptability and resilience through the 21st century and beyond. 2. Integrated districts Mayfair and Belgravia are integrated and productive parts of a global city, attracting and hosting jobs, investment and interest. They draw people in from the wider West End and London. Physically, they are easy to access. They benefit from clear signage that encourages walking and
42
have attractive public spaces that are welcoming to all, including those with greater accessibility needs. Activity links the edges of Mayfair and Belgravia to their hearts and encourages people to explore. The estate’s streets host places to visit, eat, drink, shop and relax, which complement those found in surrounding areas. These places create compelling connections between the estate, its neighbours and the wider West End so that the estate is open and outward-facing. People enter frequently and easily from surrounding places including Knightsbridge, Victoria, Hyde Park and Oxford Street. Some people are drawn to the estate’s own outstanding attractions, while others enjoy the benefit of convenient and pleasant routes providing links to other destinations. 3. Connected communities The distinctive identities of Mayfair and Belgravia are recognised and valued by their residents, workers and visitors. Relationships between individuals, businesses and local institutions are enhanced by the physical and personal connections forged on the estate. Those connections are made locally through amenities including
[PROPERTY] parks and green walls and roofs, which use the natural environment to enrich local biodiversity. It is a beacon of environmental excellence.
working hubs and leisure, community, retail and educational facilities. Distinctive cultural activities and events celebrate the estate’s communities, history and character and are popular with both locals and visitors. Connections are also made through world-class digital infrastructure. This technology pervades spaces and buildings, seamlessly facilitating greater professional and social interaction. 4. Better streets Mayfair and Belgravia have a network of connections that prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. The estate is easy, safe and pleasurable to travel across and explore, and arriving via the major roads at its edges is simple. Striking townscape vistas are emphasised at street level, aiding intuitive navigation. Vehicles retain access to the estate, but traffic levels passing through it have been substantially reduced, improving the experience for cyclists and pedestrians and keeping businesses serviced. The Elizabeth line in 2018 and other investments in public transport will significantly improved connections to and from the estate. Most roads place the needs of pedestrians and cyclists over motorised traffic, while others
are traffic-free on a permanent or temporary basis. Electric and autonomous vehicles are provided for, and commercial deliveries and waste collection have been consolidated.
5. Greener spaces Mayfair and Belgravia are two of the greenest neighbourhoods in central London. They are characterised by high-quality open spaces, thriving trees, greater planting and an environment that is conducive to health and well-being. The natural environment is cherished by residents and visitors, and complements its exceptional buildings. Large green spaces are open for public use, providing more amenity and a focal point for neighbourhood activity. Environmental sustainability is core to decisions made around the estate. Air quality has improved due to London-wide and local initiatives to reduce pollution and cut traffic. The estate contains a network of green infrastructure, including pocket
6. Enterprising places Workspaces in Mayfair and Belgravia strengthen enterprise by responding to the changing needs and aspirations of businesses, workers and residents. Office clusters range from the highest quality traditional office spaces to more flexible space on affordable tenures. The estate attracts both young and established organisations, creating a complementary community that allows businesses to thrive with co-working, collaboration and knowledge-sharing. The estate is at the forefront of retailing trends, providing the street life and digital conditions for new forms of retail to succeed alongside the traditional. The estate is a global centre for art and culture and also hosts leading creative productions, with a flourishing network of designers and makers. Clusters of cultural initiatives, retailers and designers benefit from opportunities to connect and collaborate. 7. Architectural excellence Mayfair and Belgravia are a source of world-class architectural interest and beauty. Their built character continues to be a source of pleasure, drawing visitors from across the globe. The estate’s beautiful buildings, townscapes and public spaces are valued, celebrated and shared. New buildings have added to an exceptional cultural legacy and older buildings have adapted to new uses where necessary. Echoing the original approach taken to developing the estate in the 18th and 19th centuries, all buildings, streets and spaces feature the highest quality design, materials and maintenance, reflecting a long-term commitment to the estate. grosvenor.com
