She will go to the ball From the cold room to the boardroom and back several times, a chef and restaurateur reveals her life story francesca lee

T
he adage of saying what came first, the chicken or the egg, certainly rings true for Laura Santtini. “I’m not sure whether I was lucky to have been born into a culinary family and that my passion for flavour came about through that, or whether I was always destined to be doing what I’m doing,” Laura tells me at the newly refurbished restaurant-bar on Ebury Street. Having taken over the reins from her father Gino, Laura is carrying on the family name in earnest, but one no doubt that she’s apprehensive about. “It has been a gradual progression over the past 18 months. My father decided that he wanted to spend less time at work and more time in Spain and, although it’s a great honour to be taking over the restaurant, it’s scary and feels as though I’m looking after someone else’s baby.” Santini – known for being one of Frank Sinatra’s favourite restaurants when he visited London – was
very much a part of Laura’s upbringing when her father opened it in 1984. Although she grew up in Buckinghamshire, Laura spent the school holidays in London where she describes the restaurant as being “like a giant pumpkin”. “My father was very strict and wherever I was or whatever I was up to, I always had to be
One of my biggest regrets was leaving university without finishing back at the restaurant by midnight, and like Cinderella, when my father said midnight he meant ten to midnight.” After she’d left school, Laura decided to read English and Italian at university. “One of my biggest regrets, though, was leaving university without finishing,” Laura tells me frankly. However, after working in PR for one of the best-known public
relations companies in the early 1980s, Lynne Franks, and then a stint at MTV where Laura worked her way up to be the head of events in Europe, she moved to Milan where she had her own production company. Food, however, has always played a huge part in her life. “When I was young I used to cook with my grandma in Italy, and then with my father at weekends; that’s how I learnt,” she recalls. A brief stint back at Santini followed, before Laura embarked on a career as an author. “I’ve always loved writing which was why I studied English,” she says. Her first book Easy Tasty Italian was received to great acclaim, and Laura won the Best First Book in 2010 from the Guild of Food Writers. But how, I wonder, did she pick the final recipes for her book? “It’s like packing hand luggage only, and when you get to your location, you wish that you had brought that one dress with you,” she tells me of her analogy. However,
there was clearly a lot more to pack in, as Laura has published further books, along with a food range, including an umami paste which is now sold all over the world. Talking of her many career changes, she describes in her words how she’s gone “from cold room to boardroom and back several times”. The next phase of her life, though, was clearly calling – and over the last year and a half Laura has taken a hands-on approach to Santini. “I have begun enhancing the business gradually and sympathetically,” she says. In the new bar I notice giant amethyst crystals for “positive vibrations”, space-age stools and a collection of family photos, including one of her and her father. Laura’s father is bound to be proud: not only has Laura turned into Cinderella but she has made Santini quite the ball. 29 Ebury Street, SW1W 0NZ, 020 7730 4094, santinirestaurant.com 7

Happy Birthday!
The Eccleston Square Hotel is proud to announce the arrival of its new restaurant Tapas 37, and with head chef Matt Laville topping the bill, it’s definitely in safe hands. Having previously worked at the Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social and Gordon Ramsay’s Maze at Claridge’s, Matt is ready to take on the French-inspired restaurant. We love the sound of the poussin with truffle mash and the shrimp croquettes – and that cheese platter, come to think of it; in fact, we like the sound of all of it. 37 Eccleston Square, SW1V 1PB, 020 3503 0693, ecclestonsquarehotel.com

10 years later [restaurant reviews]
Two seasoned restaurants battle it out between two celebratory first decade menus francesca lee Hawksmoor, Knightsbridge
A
decade in the restaurant business is cause for celebration. Ten years of expansion including restaurants in Spitalfields, the City, Covent Garden, Mayfair and Knightsbridge is certainly a feat in itself. And what better way to commemorate such an occasion than with a specially tailored six-course menu that honours the dishes, drinks and the people that have made Hawskmoor what it is today over the past 10 years? And with wine pairings to complement each course also an option, there’s plenty on offer. I start with the shortrib nuggets with kimchi ketchup. Large chunks of tender, melt-in-themouth meat is covered by deep-fried crispy batter. An indulgent appetiser, the accompanying tangy ketchup gives the dish more depth and flavour. Next up is the scallops. Served in their shells with oil and herbs, the combination of white port, garlic and breadcrumbs turn what I generally find to be a bland dish into a moreish seafood masterpiece. It’s without a doubt one 10
of the stars of the show. Washed down with a glass of Domaine du Haut Bourg Muscadet Origine 2005, the white wine is so light and fresh it almost acts as a palate-cleanser to balance the flavour. A brief break follows before the pre-main. Yes that’s correct, a pre-main. A top tip for diners: allow plenty of time (at least two hours) to fully enjoy this meal. A huge portion of Tamworth pork belly ribs is meant to satiate my appetite, and although it’s delicious, I can’t finish the whole portion and the mild taste of aniseed is a slightly questionable
A word of warning: allow plenty of time (at least two hours) to fully enjoy this meal
flourish. The Qupe Bien Nacido Hillside Rousanne 2010, however, is rich and full-bodied and offsets the dish. I could easily gulp down another glass or two. My 300g portion of fillet steak is a generous main, especially given that it’s served alongside bone marrow, triple-cooked chips and creamy spinach. Though I’m not normally an advocate of spinach, the creamed version is a welcome alternative and makes me question my usual approach to greens. Dessert is sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream, but is again quite heavy for a six-course tasting menu. The Salted Caramel Tributes with a dram of whisky is the ultimate nightcap, and a toast to the past 10 years, and many more to come for that matter. Available for lunch and dinner priced at £70 per person or £130 including drinks. Theo Randall at the InterContinental
T
his year marks 10 years since chef Theo Randall launched his award-winning restaurant, Theo Randall at the InterContinental. With more than just a spruce up – the bar has been redesigned to include a sommelier’s table, with a contemporary Italian twist to the décor (created by Superfutures) and materials including Terrazzo and Carrera marble, as well as muted green olive and grey painted walls, give the restaurant a highend Italian hotel feel. Rumoured to have cost £60million, my sole bug bear is that there’s no natural light. My mood changes, however, when a selection of antipasti arrives at my table. I enjoy the Sformato di Fontina – a baked cheese soufflé with spinach
and cream which is the perfect combination of well-raised, but a little wobbly (much like myself ). My second appetiser of zucchini fritti is addictive and I inhale the whole portion. Meanwhile, the lightly oiled and salted focaccia that’s sprinkled with rosemary, is just as addictive and gives me my carb fix. For my first course I opt for ravioli with ricotta
and sage butter, and I love the fact that I’m given a choice between a small or large portion. I go for the former and although the pasta is super fresh, I’m not overwhelmed by the sauce; it’s just too rich and creamy. My main consists of chargrilled Hereford beef sirloin served with fritto misto, squash, violet and Jerusalem artichokes with fresh red chilli and parsley and the artichokes are a welcome accompaniment – I much prefer the Italian take on meat with vegetables than French steak and chips. Unfortunately there’s little room for dessert but a flat white gives me a muchneeded caffeine boost. As I leave, the restaurant is buzzing; it’s clear that the recent changes have brought the restaurant up-to-date as hotel guests and locals alike tuck into an Italian feast. Critically-acclaimed author, actor and director Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay of Gosford explains his latest venture, the app-based novel entitled Park, for which he won the Oscar Belgravia, at The Berkeley Hotel with his niece Jessica Fellowes for Best Original Screenplay in 2001, Elizabeth Finney

his groundbreaking app-based novel and a short sharp lesson in grammar from Lord Fellowes, the audience listens attentively to the story behind the story of Belgravia, and Lord Fellowes himself. His accolades are endless – he
after which he wrote the screenplay for the multiple award-winning Young Victoria. He is now most famous for his world-renowned series Downton Abbey which hit our screens in 2010, but prior to this his two Sunday Times best-seller novels Snobs and Past Imperfect ensured his name was firmly lodged in most households throughout the UK. Belgravia, which launched last month, is an app-based novel which
[CULTURE] is released episodically in a modified Dickensian fashion – readers will receive a new chapter each week. “There seemed to be a kind of cosmic joke in having a 19th century method to tell the story and a 21st century app to go with it,” Lord Fellowes says jovially. “The whole thing struck me as being rather humorous, especially me doing it – old fatty in the corner who can hardly work a tin-opener and suddenly there I am on the cutting edge of technology.” The structure of the writing process was also of interest – Lord Fellowes describes how he wrote a detailed synopsis of the story and the characters before handing it over to be researched and expanded upon. “They fleshed it out, did more research and brought more historical reality to it,” he explains. “Then they came back to me and I rewrote my own version, so it was a team effort.”
“My own belief is that we need a society that protects the unfortunate but supports the aspirational” The bulk of the storm is set in Belgravia in 1841, but the first chapter takes place in 1815, at the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball, which preceded the Battle of Waterloo. “I think real events anchor the show because you allow fictional characters to have responses to things that really took place, which puts them into the period convincingly,” Lord Fellowes concludes. “I think all history is change, and we have a completely false idea that everyone was strolling around with a parasol ordering dinner and suddenly The Beatles arrived.” Highlighting his admiration for Thomas Cubitt and the extraordinary way in which Belgravia was purposefully manifested as a ‘new village of the rich’, it becomes clear that Lord Fellowes’ knowledge of history is
quite anomalous. From extensive conversations with family members across the generations to years of research, Lord Fellowes’ awareness of society is intriguing. As questions of what society needs to function and how it has worsened in recent decades fly from the audience, he answers them delicately. “My own belief is that we need a society that protects the unfortunate but supports the aspirational. And I think when that balance goes wrong is when we go into a dip,” he says, recalling how the Victorians failed society with their notions of ‘the deserving poor.’ Lord Fellowes continues: “Anyone who lived through the seventies will remember when aspiration was actually frowned upon. We thought we could turn our back on invention and ambition and all the rest of it – we need that. We need brave people taking chances and putting their money where their mouth is.” As his audience listen, he goes on to explain his views on society today: “I think we have less of a sense of community and of identity – one of the difficulties of social media is you’re not in the moment, you’re somewhere else. One thing I’m always rather sorry about with young people is that they keep in touch all the time with those they know and they’re not really open to new faces.” Lightening the mood, he regales us with tales of being sent to parties by his parents and, on one occasion, being summoned from sleep to join a dinner party so that there were 14 around the table, rather than 13, noting that it was the job of parents to socialise their children. “If we want to keep ourselves as a community with a feeling of belonging, we have to work at it – it’s something we have to put some effort into.” Soon the questions come to a close, and Lord Fellowes’ fans clamour to meet him – I can hardly blame them. Julian Fellowes is charming, fiercely intelligent and wonderfully charismatic, but has an astounding skill for making his audience feel like they are too.
The Journal caught up with Lord Fellowes after his interview… How long did it take to write? About three and a half months. What was your inspiration? I always wanted to write about the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball, a real-life event which took place in Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo. At 1am, a messenger arrived with the news that Napoleon had advanced and the Duke of Wellington had to leave the ball with his officers for the battlefield. Why have you decided to focus on Belgravia? Belgravia was built during a fascinating moment in history, when the Industrial Revolution was bringing enormous change to Britain and creating great wealth for some. It was a period when all the cards had been thrown into the air, and it was up to the smartest to grab them. is much of the story factual? The story is fictional, but I draw on real people and events, like Thomas Cubitt and the Battle of Waterloo. What themes are explored? I like to write about love. It is the one period in our lives in which we all experience complete madness, and I’m fascinated by how this makes us act. I am also interested in social mobility, and the 1840s were notable for that. One of the main characters, James Trenchard, rises from humble beginnings to become a successful developer, and partners with Cubitt to build Belgravia. He tries to reach higher in society, and I like to explore that desire to achieve ever greater heights. What do you like to read? I never seem to have enough time to read for my own pleasure; unfortunately I’m always busy reading for work or research. But I do enjoy history and biography.

scentsational The Journal heads to fragrance favourite Jo Loves on Elizabeth Street to try something a little bit different. Forget perfume and candles, it’s all about tapas and shots emily adams
E
verything at Jo Loves is clean, white, perfectly placed and, as you’d expect, smells incredible. Spotlights make everything glisten like the crystals in Jenny Packham’s shop window and I almost feel the need to put my sunglasses back on. Jo Loves is one of beauty guru Jo Malone’s creations – her first company Jo Malone London was ever so slightly successful (it’s now available in 22 countries and is something of an institution). Having sold the company in 1999, Jo’s latest project is this Belgravia boutique, something she’s heavily involved in. First on the menu is a taste of Fragrance Tapas, a new in-store complimentary feature. This experience is designed to show me how different products work, before I take the plunge and buy them. Sitting on a stool at the fragrance bar, I’m presented with an array of scents and already my sense of smell is going
into overdrive. I pick my three favourites and we get to work. One of the scents, in the form of a cleanser, is put into a cocktail shaker and poured over ice into a Martini glass so that I can see how it foams up. It’s confusing for my senses, but the theatrics are fun and I really enjoy how unusual it is; this isn’t your run-of-the-mill shopping trip. Fifteen minutes in and I’m a walking fragrance counter, but I smell so good that I’m actually okay with it. I’m then taken through to the Candle Shot Studio, another bright white laboratory-style room, and for a moment I’m back at school, ready to set up the Bunsen burner and whack
on some Perspex goggles. Luckily, the reality is far more grown up; science just got fashionable. Of course, scented candles bring a home together; your grandma’s beloved pot-pourri is out and exotic candles are in, so trying to stand out in a sea of scented wax is no easy feat. In front of me, though, is something quite special. The Shot Candles are an exclusive design by Jo Loves and unlike any other candles I’ve seen. I’m faced with a multitude of single-note fragrances and tasked with creating my own candle concoction. First, I pick one of the base scents, which include charcoaled lemons and ouzo and
honey. Using a paintbrush, I sweep each scent across a clean white canvas to test them. I pick Tahitian Gardenia and then choose a different shot fragrance. Thankfully, all the scents have been created to work together, so it’s just up to me to figure out which one I prefer – a simple task, because let’s face it, who wouldn’t choose the smell of salted caramel? And then, when it’s complete, it’s beautifully packaged within an inch of its life, with boxes, tissue paper, ribbons and a spritz of fragrance to seal it together. As I leave the store, protectively cradling my candle, I realise that my intentions to give this to a loved one have gone right out the window – this one is too special to share; this one is all mine. £80 each, 42 Elizabeth Street, SW1W 9NZ, 020 7730 8611, joloves.com 17

HATS OFF It’s that time of year when hats and headpieces are king – whether it’s a fascinator for a wedding or a hat for Ascot, there’s one name that is always synonymous with this type of accessory: Belgravia’s own Philip Treacy BETHAN REES
21
“E
verybody loves things that sparkle,” Philip Treacy once said, and it’s with this in mind that I look at the glittering career and influence of the hat designer – not milliner as he’s made clear in the past – in the fashion and art worlds, and his home, Belgravia. He could be described as the world’s most in-demand hat designer – his creations have adorned the heads of Lady Gaga (most notably the telephone-shaped headpiece with removable headset) and the Duchess of Cambridge to name just a couple. But, of course, Philip had to start somewhere and he started with an impressive education in fashion design. Born in Ahascragh, County Galway in Ireland, Philip moved to Dublin in the ’80s where he studied fashion at the National College of Art and Design and made his first piece from an old straw hat which he found in a junk shop and took apart using steam from a kettle – his tutor subsequently bought it from him and wore it to an exhibition in
London. He then headed to London where he won a place on an MA fashion design course at the Royal College of Art. Graduating with a first class honours in 1990, Philip took one of his creations to the then Tatler art director, Michael Roberts and his style editor, the late Isabella Blow, who leant a hand in launching Philip’s career. Isabella was notorious for her ability to spot talent, and Alexander McQueen was among her protégés – with whom Philip collaborated in 1999 when working on a haute-couture collection for Givenchy, which included the famous ram’s horns hat. Isabella had originally approached Philip to make a hat for her wedding and she went on to invite him to move in with her and her second husband Detmar, in Elizabeth Street, Belgravia. In 1990 he moved into their basement, where he lived and worked on his designs. When he opened his first official studio just a few doors away from Isabella at number 69 in 1994, he described the space as a “little gold box with our window to the

world”, which provided a place to showcase his dramatic and soon-tobe world-famous designs. Philip has identified 1993 as the year that heralded a new attitude towards headpieces and millinery after showcasing his first annual catwalk show at London Fashion Week that year. Gone were the days of a hat being a functional item to either keep you warm or to appear
[LIFESTYLE] Soup can, Philip’s designs are unquestionably surreal but always have a sense of mischief and a playful attitude. Using luxurious and often exotic materials from all over the world, a Philip Treacy hat is not for the subtle-minded, and each piece he creates has a certain drama. You know a Philip Treacy when you see one, and I think that’s what makes his work so spectacular – from a hat featuring a chinoiserie landscape made from cork, to horsehair helmets, there’s nothing else quite like them. Although his designs may not strike you as everyday wear, he also creates ready-to-wear items, including his latest S/S16 range, which features slightly more paredback pieces, but still with the Philip Treacy boldness everyone knows and loves. Philip’s reputation in both the local area and the fashion world will continue to thrive as a true visionary. He’s worked with some of the other great minds of fashion culture such as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Valentino and Ralph Lauren and also singer Grace Jones – he was the designer and art director of her Hurricane tour in 2009. Books have also been written in Philip’s honour, including one in 2013, Philip Treacy, which celebrated the craft behind his art
and was released by close friend and photographer Kevin Davies. The book illustrates the creativity in Philip’s studio with an archive of images depicting his entire working life. Philip Treacy shows his love of making fantasies a reality in this behind-the-scenes book, snipping feathers and fitting hats while celebrities and personalities are strewn over sofas, chatting away and sharing jokes. It’s a truly glamorous picture of the scene Philip has inhabited. His work for the Royal Family has also not gone unnoticed; in 2007 he was awarded an honorary OBE for services to the British fashion industry by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at Clarence House. Camilla was wearing one of Philip’s designs seen at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, including the much-spokenabout hat worn by Princess Beatrice, which, in my opinion, is a wonderful creation. With Philip Treacy designs, nothing is impossible and we’re thrilled to have him as a central part of the cultural make-up of this very special part of London. I doff my hat to you, Philip. 69 Elizabeth Street, SW1W 9PJ, 020 7730 3992, philiptreacy.co.uk
smart; now it was all about fashion, art and craft. In 2003, Isabella commented on this change: “In the old days, people were frightened by my hats (the ones Philip had made). But in the last year, or maybe two, Philip has single-handedly broken through the barriers.” His style is definitely signature – from a lobster to a swarm of butterflies to a Campbell’s 23

…and breathe
An early-morning yoga class is just what the doctor ordered, the Journal discovers EMILY ADAMS
M
y alarm goes off at 5.45am and I’m already regretting that I signed up to this. I’m about to attend one of the new Breakfast Club Early Morning Yoga classes at the Belgravia Light Centre, which starts at 7.30am, but I am not a morning person; in fact, I’m barely an evening person – I need my sleep. When I arrive at 7-9 Eccleston Street, it takes a while to locate the Light Centre. Down some steps, along a corridor, up some more steps and eventually I arrive at reception. Taking a look around, there’s a surprisingly large spa-like waiting room with plush sofas and doors leading to different studios and treatment rooms. It’s very quiet and calming as I put my belongings away and head to my class. As I sit in a stark white room, people trickle in one by one, until there are about 10 of us, all waiting on our mats in silence. They look like experienced yoga-goers, but I’m assured that this class is for all abilities. My stomach rumbles, questioning why I forced it to wake up and eat so early this morning. It gives the game away, making me nervous; only the new girl would be the tummy rumbler. Luckily, our instructor
The hands-on approach won’t be for everyone, but as a beginner I need all the help I can get Melinda Szepesi (one of five offering these classes), breezes in and interrupts my growling stomach, giving us newcomers (there are two of us, thankfully) a brief introduction to Vinyasa Flow yoga. It’s physically challenging and fast-paced, with a focus on breathing. At times I struggle to keep up, but there’s no pressure to do everything and there are easier options for the trickier poses. The routine is well-thought out, with one pose flowing effortlessly to the next (or at least it’s effortless
when Melinda shows us). I almost fall behind, mesmerised by how flexible she is, but it makes me try that little bit harder. She’s a hands-on instructor, helping us all to achieve the right poses, pushing my shoulders down to get me to relax or easing me into the right shape. The handson approach won’t be for everyone, but as a beginner I need all the help I can get, and by the end I’m really getting into the rhythm, mastering the downward-facing dog, warrior and bridge poses.
To finish, we close our eyes, lie still and just focus on our breathing, as Melinda comes round and gives us each a brief massage to relieve any tension. She then says a few words, thanking us for attending the class, noting how important it is to spend time on ourselves every day when we live such hectic lives. I haven’t thought about anything but yoga for the last hour. I feel energised and chuffed that I made the effort; it was exactly what I needed, and with my new chilled-out mood, I brace myself for another day of London life. A shock to the system
Exercising with electricity? The Belgravia Residents’ Journal has heard it all… Francesca Lee
B
elgravia has a wealth of fitness-training options; from the excellent classes at Grace Belgravia to personal training on the doorstep, fitness classes in Belgrave Square to yoga and Pilates at the Light Centre Belgravia. Whether you’re more of a cardio person or you focus on weight and strengthing exercises, there’s something for every Belgravian resident. Bringing a new type of technology to the area is E-Pulsive. Taking place in either the comfort of your own home or at its studio in Knightsbridge, E-Pulsive uses EMS (Electical Muscle Simulation) and has 26
become the latest fitness trend in recent years. Favoured by some of the world’s elite athletes as a strength training tool, the Journal tested it to see if it lived up to its hype... My E-Pulsive instructor Dasha Ivanova made me feel at ease as soon as I met her. As she’s a personal instructor and trained with E-Pulsive for more than a year, I knew I was in the right hands. Dasha gave me a very

tight bodysuit to squeeze myself into (similar to a short wetsuit), and I must admit, that it was a workout in itself. She then sprayed the electrode pads with water and attached them to specific areas on my body, which were placed to target certain muscle groups. I was then hooked up to a machine; RoboCop eat your heart out. Perhaps not my best look, but what was coming next certainly took my mind off my appearance. I was given the choice of either a cardio or toning workout (I opted for the latter), and as Dasha talked me through a range of different exercises, including lunges and squats, the machine did
its magic. As I exercised, I worked with the strong electrical pulse, and with Dasha’s encouragement I was able to increase the current. The best way to describe it is like targeted Power Plates. Muscles that had long gone into hibernation were receiving a rude awakening. The 20-minute workout flew by, but Dasha assured me that my workout was equivalent to three hours in the gym. It’s hard to measure results by just one session, but it’s certainly a different way to exercise. And if it’s good enough for elite athletes, then it’s certainly good enough for me. e-pulsive.co.uk

Fancy using this occasion to throw a little party or picnic of your own? It might not be as large as the Patron’s Lunch on 12 June where around 10,000 people will line The Mall, but it can certainly be as tasty. Harrods hampers are great for picnics and The Grandeur Food Hall Collection has everything you might need in it: five bottles of wine; teas and coffees; biscuits; jams and chutneys, as well as fudge and chocolates. £200, Harrods, 87-135 Brompton Road, SW1X 7XL, 020 7730 1234, harrods.com

Each box contains two bars, one made from smooth milk chocolate and the other from the finest dark. The charming boxes come in three designs: one with a carriage that’s been taken over by unruly corgis, a soldier standing to attention in a sentry box and one for children that’s designed to look like a rocking horse. [GREATH BRITISH ESCAPE]
A taste of the
high life The Journal travels to Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire to find its inner movie star emily adams
C
ruising down the long, winding driveway that leads to Stoke Park Country Club, Spa and Hotel, surrounded by trees and immaculate manicured lawns, I feel like I’m in the opening credits of a movie; Miss Moneypenny about to meet James Bond perhaps. And before you scoff, it’s not the most absurd vision in the world – Stoke Park is the English countryside’s answer to Hollywood, and both Goldfinger and Tomorrow Never Dies were filmed here. Pinewood Studios is just under five miles away and while a country club may seem an unlikely backdrop to an action-packed blockbuster, as I roll up to the main house I can instantly see what all the fuss is about – it’s remarkable. Do you remember that dramatic scene in Layer Cake where Daniel Craig – spoiler – gets shot, or the famous rowing incident in Bridget Jones’s Diary where Hugh Grant inevitably ends up in the lake, or how about all those scenes of Paul Bettany playing tennis in Wimbledon? In fact, forget Hollywood for a moment, Stoke Park is the setting for some of British film’s most iconic movie scenes, and it’s no wonder that I get a sudden urge to recreate that famous golf course duel between Bond and Goldfinger.
30
It’s an Aladdin’s cave of charms and treats and a ready-made film set The exterior of Stoke Park is striking in stature and style but the interior is far more impressive with its high ceilings, sweeping staircases, large open fires and dazzling centrepiece chandeliers.
It’s an Aladdin’s cave of charms and treats and a ready-made film set. Upstairs there is a complex maze of corridors and rooms. I’ll admit I get lost on several occasions but every time I rediscover my room, I can’t quite wipe the smug grin off my face. When I sink into one of the two armchairs in front of my own crackling fire (I visited in February), I feel like I’m at home in my living room, but with a touch more glamour. The bathroom is almost equal in size to the rest of the suite, with a roll-top bath, his ‘n’ hers basins and more marble than the Taj Mahal, but the standout feature is the view of the grounds. Stoke Park is a 300-acre private estate and a golfer’s dream. Its 27-hole championship golf course sits below my window and sweeps around the hotel, taking in parkland, lakes and historic gardens. Like everything at Stoke Park, the golf course is steeped in history, having been designed by golf architect Harry Colt in 1908 and it hosted the first PGA Matchplay tournament in 1910. It’s now one of five other golfing venues in the UK to have received the 5 AA Red Star accolade; the Oscar of the golf world. Once I’ve pulled myself away from the luscious green lawns (how
[LIFESTYLE] do they get them that green?), I saunter down to The Pavilion Spa to see what’s on offer. Waiting in the relaxation room in my fluffy robe and slippers, I sit opposite a large exotic fish tank, wondering if Renée Zellweger or Hugh Grant did just this after a hard day’s filming. I am treated to a massage in one of the 11 treatment rooms and, after an hour of intense relaxation, there’s no point in denying to my masseuse that I fell asleep. My skin is softer than silk, I’m calmer than ever and, after a dip in the generously-sized pool complete with hydro seats, I regretfully make my way outside and brave the elements to get back to my room. Resisting the temptation to fall asleep in front of the fire, I make my way to dinner, passing through each of the three restaurants one by one. Rooms of exceeding formality greet me and as the tone gets smarter, the lights get dimmer, until I reach the pièce de résistance: Humphry’s, an ornately decorated restaurant, it serves modern British cuisine and does it exceptionally well. Each table is decorated with a small plant and an Art Deco miniature lamp, and chandeliers hang from every ceiling, suitably completing the elegant Georgian
interiors. Simple spotlights around the room and opulent floral displays bring the décor up to date. As a fine-dining restaurant, white-glove service is the norm but the staff are very friendly and not too formal, so I consider teasing them and asking for a Martini, shaken not stirred. I opt for the salmon and lobster starter, followed by the beef and finally a divine dessert; a box constructed artfully from chocolate, brimming with yet more chocolate wonder on the inside. Each course of the meal
is exceedingly well-executed and introduces my palate to more flavour pairings that I imagined possible. My culinary lesson taught, I head for bed. I leave the following morning, playing the part of a movie star. I put my sunglasses back on, slink down the front steps and drive off into the sunset in true James Bond style as the credits start to roll – and scene. Westminster greenlights Millbank Tower transformation
An ambitious proposal to transform the landmark 32-storey Millbank Tower into a residentialled scheme has been given the green light by planners. John McAslan + Partners put in plans to refurbish and enhance the Grade II-listed riverfront building, which it describes as ‘an important heritage asset’, last year. An impressed Westminster Council has just raised its collective thumb, paving the way for the creation of 207 new residential units, a 150-bed
hotel, public realm improvements and a major new ‘cultural facility’. John McAslan, chairman of John McAslan + Partners, said of the scheme: “Our proposals will secure the long term future of this remarkable 20th-century building and we are delighted that Westminster Council has granted planning permission and listed building consent for its conversion to residential use.” Bought by the billionaire Reuben brothers back in 2002, the tower has dominated the north bank of the Thames for over 50 years. example of post war architecture”, the buildings are said to require “considerable” restoration. Described by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as “one of the few London office towers to have won affection”, the bold edifice was designed by Ronald Ward and Partners and built by John Mowlem & Co in 1963, when it briefly held the title of London’s tallest structure. The complex has housed a huge number of organisations since then, including the UN, the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, the Central Statistical Office, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, the Local Government Ombudsman, the UK India Business Council, the Ministry of Justice Records Management Service, the Environment Agency, the World Bank, Altitude 360 London and Audit Commission.

ebra Stroud, better known as Debbie, of Chestertons Knightsbridge and Belgravia is on top of her game. Having started at the branch as office junior in 1975 and celebrating her 40th year with the company last year, she has worked her way up to the top. “I went from receptionist to secretary, PA to sales negotiator and onwards – it was like an apprenticeship – I learnt as I went on,” she tells me. “I’ve spent the majority of my working life in the area and have been through so many different markets.” Although Debbie is keen to point out that there have always been overseas investors, she has noticed a change in buyer profile. “There’s more young money coming into the area; I’ve certainly seen a rise in City workers investing and living in Belgravia and Knightsbridge.” Having spent her career working – and at one point living – in the area, Debbie has even helped three generations of the same family to buy property in Knightsbridge and Belgravia. Debbie describes: “Whether buyers are looking for a flat in a mansion block overlooking Hyde Park or a Belgravia mews
house, there’s high demand. After all, there’s only a limited number of properties – not much more can be redeveloped – One Hyde Park has been completed and I’d say the Barracks is one of the last buildings with on-going work.” But with the current market in mind, how does Debbie see the Brexit debate affecting it? “Whether we’re in or out, the market will adjust itself,” she says. In fact, she feels now is a good time to buy, especially in terms of value for money for overseas investors. “If buyers are using euros or dollars,
“Whether we’re in or out, the market will adjust itself ”
they’ll certainly be getting a good deal in terms of exchange rates.” As well as knowing the local property market inside and out, Debbie is very much involved in the local community. “I’m a member of the Knightsbridge Business Group, which involves a number of companies in the local area – it’s really positive and we discuss everything that’s happening locally,” she says. Debbie is on the committee for the Motcomb Street Party and Chestertons sponsors The Belgravia Dog Show together with the Grosvenor Film Festival. “Last year one of my clients won the category of the dog that looks most like its owner!” she laughs. There has certainly been plenty to keep Debbie on her toes – for the last 40 years and many more to come. 31 Lowndes Street, SW1X 9HX, 020 7235 8090, chestertons.com 53
